Had to use VAC to connect things together. This is the first time I've tried to work a RTTY contest with the 5K. Turns out the delay in VAC everyone has been talking about is almost intolerable during a contest because of the fast turnaround times. Wasn't that much fun in a rag chew either. I decided to try and find a way around this problem. I have an unused sound card (D44) in the PC I'm running the 5K on just sitting there so me thinks why not plug the 5K sound card outputs into the D44 and use it instead of VAC. IT WORKS! No more cracks, pops, farts and delays. Like night and day difference. Really makes the 5K a pleasure to use in a contest now. All it takes is two cables from the 5K to the sound card (RCA phono to 1/8 stereo plug (tip) x 2). All parts are avail at your local Radio Shack if not in your junk box. Connect cables as follows: 1) 5K Audio Out to sound card Line In 2) 5K Audio In to sound card Line Out (spkr) In the 5K Audio Mixer select the Line In/Out RCA controls. [Flexradio] New PowerSDR release???
Well Tim thats how ya keep it a secret! Post it on the flex-radio forum. There hasn't been a announcement posted there since version 1.8.0 back in December of 2006. The poor suckers who ask for tech. help there hardly ever get answers cause almost nobody goes there anymore including Flex. But gee where does every body go to find out what's happening including Flex, HERE. But then they post the announcement over there. What a shame, no coordination. Re: [Flexradio] Using a Flex remotely
I also use the my F5k in a LAN remotely with VPN (Linux, XP and Vista on the Flex Computer) with no delay problems on the VPN part. I agree, that IPsound is the best program for voice. I tried Skype, Xlite, mumble and walkitalkie and came back to IPsound on the XP sytem (Xlite for the Linux client). There are two things about IPsound: -The website disappeared (may be, the programm can be found somewhere else) -The program crashes crashed in my Vista environment. Working with the XP compatibility mode solves this. There is some noticable delay, which increases, if I use VAC instead of the RCA linein. Guenter DK1RI Am Samstag, 26. Bill travels a bit and was interested in remote operation of his 7800. This peaked my interest and yesterday morning I set out to remote my Flex-5000A. I found a free product on www.logmein.com that provided the necessary function for control of a remote PC ( I know, I am cheap ). I installed the client on the XP machine that runs the radio and set the remote software up on the MacBook Pro (requires a "plug in" for Safari). Security is pretty good requiring a user name and password for Logmein and a second password to access the remote computer. With very little effort, I was moving about the console, changing bands, audio settings, and so forth on the Power SDR Console from my Mac. At this point I installed Skype on the Mac (it was already on the PC) and I was in business. I was suprised at how easy it was and confirmation of my efforts occurred this a.m. as I used the remote to keep my sked with Bill and others. There is quite a bit of latency in the control of the 5000, so your contact needs to be aware that you are on a remote. CW operation using CWGet and CWType remotely with the 5000 was flawless. On a good clean signal you do not even need the audio connection. :-) 73's Jim, W4ATK [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://web.mac.com/jimrogers_w4atk No virus found in this outgoing message. [Flexradio] PowerSDR & N1MM Logger Voice Keyer
I am trying to use the voice keyer built into N1MM Logger with my Flex-5000A. I followed the following steps: 1. Recorded a WAV file using PowerSDR. 2. Edited the file using either Wavosaur or Any-Sound-Recorder to remove the dead areas before & after the message (my call). 3. Placed the edited file in the N1MM/WAV directory. 4. Set N1MM Logger to play the file when the proper button was clicked. 5. Set N1MM Logger to key the radio by command. When I click the button in N1MM Logger, PowerSDR goes into transmit & plays the WAV file. However, the audio sounds terrible! Audio is in "slow-motion" and sounds like I.m speaking through a glass of water. If I play the WAV file directly using MediaPlayer, Waveosaur, or Any-Sound-Recorder it sounds normal. Okay, I think it must be a mis-match between the sample rate & bits/sample settings of PowerSDR, VAC, & N1MM Logger; but I have not had any success finding a combination that works. Setup is: PowerSDR SVN 1817, Flex-5000A, Windows Vista Home Premium. [Flexradio] Remote Operation of the Flex-5000A
I haven't done this outside of my intranet, but I can do this anywhere on my network with either the 5K or the SDR-1K. There are some latency issues. Some fine tuning of the server and the client in terms of screen bit depth etc. helps this considerably. I have done it cross platform from Linux to Windows as well. The client I use is tight VNC and IP sound. I have used Skype also both work fb. I use VAC to make the connections between the radio and the audio server. When the flex wire protocol gets going, the sky is the limit as far as I can see. The flex wire will be able to handle many chores even unto aiming a beam. I have my SDR-1K all linked up to my antenna switching so it automatically selects the correct antenna and I have an Acom 2K which autotunes, so its pretty much click and talk from anywhere in the house. I also use a LP-1 digital watt meter that has a program that links to the computer, so I can watch the power out and SWR from the remote as well. I do not have the Acom hooked up to the 'puter yet but that is also possible. I also have DX lab running so the packet and digital modes are also alive. I never thought about CW Get and CW type, I will have to give that a try. This is fun to experiment with and very easy to get going and will add another dimension to your radio enjoyment. http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10082 73 W9OY Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Re: [Flexradio] Honest S-meter Readings
Gerald, That is EXACTLY how the S-meter in PowerSDR works. Refer to the explanation posted by Gerald Youngblood yesterday evening. Item 2 in his post states, "The FlexRadio products measure the signal strength at the antenna terminals" 73, Ray, K9DUR ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] Honest S-meter Readings
That is exactly the way the SDR-1000 and FLEX-5000 work today. See Gerald's email from yesterday afternoon explaining how changing the preamp setting does not change signal strength, it lowers the noise floor. Gerald's quote: "2) The FlexRadio products measure the signal strength at the antenna terminals in the same way that a spectrum analyzer does. If you change the preamp settings, the noise floor goes DOWN and the signal level stays the same. Remember that when you change the preamp setting, you have not changed the signal level at the antenna terminal. You have, however; improved the signal to noise ratio with the preamp and therefore the noise should go down in reference to a fixed" Just do the RX Level calibration with a signal source of known strength. Most people use the XG-1 and calibrate for -73 dB for S9 -Tim -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gerald Capodieci Sent: Saturday, January 26, 2008 11:35 AM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] Honest S-meter Readings OK you guys beat me up if you like but here it goes: Wouldn't it be nice if the S-meter measured the signal strength at the antenna jack. Then when you tell someone they have an S9 signal and then turn on or off your preamp or change you RF gain, you could still say they have an S9 signal. (I remember when I used the Japanese radios, if I turned down the RF gain the S reading would increase. That never made any sense but, I don't use them any more. I guess if I gritted my teeth and paid for the good ones, all would have been better.) Now someone please tell me how to calibrate PowerSDR to make the S-meter have these nice features. Re: [Flexradio] Honest S-meter Readings
Gerald, PowerSDR with either the SDR-1000 or FLEX-5000x behaves *exactly* the way you desire. If yours is not, then it most likely needs to be calibrated. See Gerald Youngblood's post of yesterday explaining this very thing, and Rob's (AB7CF) nice summary that he posted today, detailing the 'must do' SDR-1000 calibrations. 73, Dale WA8SRA Gerald Capodieci wrote: > OK you guys beat me up if you like but here it goes: > Wouldn't it be nice if the S-meter measured the signal strength at the > antenna jack.
