That is true -- the CATV meter (an SDA 5000) does measure levels in dBmV and at
75 ohms.. I'll poke around and see what I can find out.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Just a heads-up. CATV meters typically measure levels expressed in dBmV.
(dB referenced to 1 millivolt across 75 ohms). We work with dBmW (dB referenced
to 1 milliwat. for us, this parameter is is across 50 ohms. The CATV meter
reading will be a lot different. The difference between the two at 75 ohms is
that 0 dBmV corresponds to -48.75 dBmW across 75 ohms. I'm not sure what the
difference between 75 and 50 ohms will make in the reading. Maybe someone else
can enlighten us on that.

6 meters is called the magic band.. because it can do magic acts...
open and close at random, at almost any time..
people 20 miles down the road may not be able hear the guy thats s9 at
your station...
it is not uncommon to go many days with never a peep of signal on 50.125...
Have you tried to find beacons in your area..?

 w4cha 50.080 Tampa el88
 k4aho/b 50.077 in Zellwood el98

I seen in my ham mail folder... Hawaii was worked on50.125, 80 miles

Re: [Flexradio] Fw: Checking Delta44 Sounds Card Voltage

Scott,

Another way to do this in the latest software is to use the built in signal
generator. Set the mode to Tone and the scale to 1.0. Then put it on
output (make sure to disconnect speakers first as it will likely be loud).

[Flexradio] PowerSDR AGC

2008-05-23 Thread Robert Dennison
Tim,

I have been complaining for some time about the AGC response of the
PowerSDR. In addition to my own complaints, I have received direct mail
from several Flex users encouraging me to continue my complaints.

Today I went back and looked again at the manual and setup. I find that
SetUp > DSP > AGC/ALC apparently provides the capability to fully control
the Flex's AGC characteristics.

I suspect that my problem stems from a Slope setting of 0 db. I think
that means that the slope is 1 db of audio increase for 1 db of signal
increase. If so that is the cause of the100 or 1000 db audio increases
I've been experiencing. At this point I don't know whether 0 db slope is
a default setting or a bone head mistake by me.

In any case, I would like to strongly encourage Flex to limit AGC setting
change possibilities to values unlikely to cause hearing damage.

In searching for reasonable parameters. I found this information in the
ARRL handbook which appeals to my own senses:

"The AGC action does not begin until a certain level called the AGC
threshold is reached. After that level is exceeded, the audio level
slowly increases. The audio rise beyond the threshold value is usually
in the 5 to 10 db range. Too much or too little audio rise are both
undesirable for most operators."

So here is what I want to do. Preset the AGC Slope Control and Max/Neg
Gain Control on the DSP tab for a maximum 5 to 10 db range rise (no
matter what the signal strength!) that is comfortable for me. And still
be able to adjust the Preamp, AGC-T and AF controls for the sweet spot.

So: 1. What are the Slope and Max/Neg Gain settings I'm looking for? 2.
Are they independent of AGC-T or do they have to be reset each time?

vy best regards
Rob

I have a similar problem -- I have heard nothing on 6 meters. I do see a lot

expected. I'm going to see what the signal strength is on CATV meter I have
access to.

In your area, you've got channel 3 and you should be able to see the video
carrier at 61.25 the audio carrier is at 65.75 -- outside of the upper
bound of the Flex receiver.

This might give you a reality check ..

Re: [Flexradio] 6 meters

2008-05-23 Thread Joel Harrison

Phil,

I have worked a few stations on six meters, but the Flex 5000 performance
for sensitivity and noise figure on six meters is not up to most other
radios. It certainly is inferior to my Yaesu FT-920.

The noise figure of the Flex 5000 on six meters is about 15 dB. Most people
have added a preamp for six meters. I have not yet done that as most of the
commercial preamps available offer a low noise figure but have around 20+ dB
gain, which is a bit more than you actually need to perk up six meters and
that much gain will impact other parameters. Al Ward and I think something
around 10 dB with a low noise figure would be ideal, but we're still doing
some testing.

Bottom line - if six meters is "open" to your area you should hear stations
and make some Q's.even some long haul Q's. If you're a die hard six
meter DX'er the Flex 5000 needs a little help on receive.

The pan adapter is very nice as it allow me to view a large area of the band
and I have been able to see stations "appear" off of my receive frequency
that I otherwise would not have known were there.

I have yet to hear a 6 meter signal. Have the 5 element beam at 85 feet coming
in to ant 3 and I've switched the 5000 to ant 3. Monitor all day with nothing
heard. Talking to my friends on 75 who work 6, the last 3 days they have been
working many stations. Perhaps I'm doing some thing wrong?

[Flexradio] Third Party Software Survey

2008-05-23 Thread Bob Tracy
All,

It's been at least year since I last surveyed the user group to see what
third party software is being used so it's time to update the list. At your
leisure, please send me a list of ALL the third party programs you are
successfully using with your Flex radio (loggers, digital, comm, audio,
etc).

If you have a third party program that doesn't work, I'd like to know that
also.

Unless you have something you particularly want to share with the group,
just reply directly to me so we reduce the clutter on the reflector.

Thanks,

Bob K5KDN

RX2 will be released when the software is ready. However, we fully expect a
stream of continuous upgrades to the software as a result of user input and
fresh ideas. Long live SDR. :)

Re: [Flexradio] Reverb issue

2008-05-23 Thread Tim Ellison
Scott,

"Then I took a download of beta to get the larger console I moved the database
over from the present I was using and started getting reports of a reverb."

This is probably the root cause of your issues. One should never "move" or
import a database between major versions of PowerSDR. You want to *always*
create a brand new database from scratch. See the KB article Q10394 - FAQ:
How Often Should I Update My PowerSDR Database?

Uninstalling and reinstalling PowerSDR does not remove the previous database
unless you delete the folder that PowerSDR was installed in.

Subject: [Flexradio] Reverb issue

I need some help from you experts. I have been getting excellent audio reports
for the last 5 months. My secret there has been if its not broke don't fix it.
I really had just stayed with the current version of V1.10.4 on my SDR 1000
using a Delta44 card with a Audio technica AT2020 microphone.

Then I took a download of beta to get the larger console I moved the database
over from the present I was using and started getting reports of a reverb.
Audio was clean but there was a reverb. I redid a download this time starting
from scratch but no luck.

I have not changed any settings at all in the MAudio section. But have have
changed a few on my Behringer preamp. I have reseated all audio connections in
Sound card and isolation transformers. But now I have the reverb back on the
V1.10.4.

So now I feel like I am chasing my tail and I don't think its how I got the SDR
software set up I think its more of the preamp or other hardware issue.

Could this be enhanced by RF at all?

Any ideas on where to look next and how to track this down.

Thanks
Scott

I had the same problem. Clean all the cable connectors with deoxidant.
I used De-Oxit from Radio Shack. Cleared the problem up for me.

[Flexradio] Checking Delta44 Sounds Card Voltage

2008-05-23 Thread KQ8RP
On V1.10.4 and alpha versons how does one go about checking the voltage on the
line out?

If I go through the routine hitting test shows nothing. It seems like one time
in the past I had to go back to a older version to make this work?
