Re: [Flexradio] How to PTT in Digital modes?

2008-07-06 Thread Dennis Petrich
Hello Ray,

Thanks for this very informative response to my question. As it turns out I
already had installed vCOM but I just didn't know how to use it so it was
just sitting there So after yours and Kirks emails it took me all of 2
seconds to get my Flex keying up in PSK31

Thank you very much, Dennis, k0eoo

Subject: RE: [Flexradio] How to PTT in Digital modes?

 Dennis,

Most sound card interfaces have a connection to a serial port for PTT
control using the DTR and/or RTS handshaking lines to key the rig. In the
SDR world, we use a virtual serial port program like K8VB's vCOM (it is
free) to set up a pair of virtual serial ports. Point the digital mode
program at one of the ports of the pair, point PowerSDR to the other,
 like
magic, you are keying the rig with no wires!

So, to use digital modes with PowerSDR, you need 2 separate 3rd-party
programs to make it work in addition to yoiur didgtal mode program
PowerSDR: 1.) you need VAC to pipe the audio between the digital mode
program PowerSDR, 2.) you need vCOM (or another virtual serial port
 program) for PTT control.

Re: [Flexradio] Ham Radio Deluxe and PowerSDR/Flex5000A

2008-07-06 Thread TOM BLACKWELL (nt)
I have had some good luck with Ham Radio DeLuxe and DM780. I was able
to set up SSTV quickly and use it to transmit and receive on 20 meters.

I have had less than good luck in decoding CW, such as the ARRL
bulletins on 20 meters. I'd like to find some better answers about this.

I have XP-Pro, not Vista.

I have a problem when trying to run Ham Radio Deluxe with PowerSDR on my
Flex5000. I'm using N8VB VCOM for com ports. I bring up PowerSDR then HDR.
I make the connection from HDR and see the frequency and other parameters
in the HDR screen. Everything is working fine. After about two minutes (can
be longer) I get an error message from PowerSDR saying Setup error. Failed
to load resources from resource file. Please check your setup. I then get
an error message from HDR that the connection has stopped. When I click
OK on the PowerSDR error message PowerSDR closes. I then close HDR. I
cannot bring PowerSDR back up without rebooting the computer. Here are the
 operating conditions.

Running Vista on an ASUS Maximus Extreme motherboard. Intel X9650 processor
(quad 3.0 gHz processors.) 2 gigs of DDR3 RAM, Firewire PCI card using the
Agere chip. The onboard firewire is disabled in the BIOS.

 PowerSDR 1.12.0, Firmware 1.2.0.3. Ham Radio Deluxe V4.0 SP3 build 1875
Driver is 3.0.0.70. Running 192 kHz with a 2048 buffer, Safe Mode 1.

 N8VB VCOM with four pairs 6 to 16, 7 to 17, 8 to 18, 9 to 19

In the HDR connection and PowerSDR CAT screen I started out with com 6 to
 16. Switched to com 8 to 18, no change. I have tried many different
matching baud rates plus the original 115,000 to 57,600. No change. The ID
on the CAT setup in PowerSDR is PowerSDR the connection in HRD is
SDR1000. I changed both to TS-2000, no change.

I have uninstalled PowerSDR, deleted the database and reinstalled PowerSDR.
No change. I have uninstalled VCOM. I configured it, saved the config and
 installed it again. No change.

My Flex5000A runs fine by itself. As soon as I bring up HRD and make the
connection PowerSDR goes belly up about 2 minutes later. I'm stumped.

Ross, I think you are right. I set up my laptop to run the same software.
My laptop is a duo AMD processor running XP Pro. I loaded the same versions
of PowerSDR, HDR and Vcom. I configured everything the same as my Vista
desktop. It ran fine and had not dropped out after two hours. There was no
sluggishness in HDR. Vista is the problem. There was another post that
listed a site for some new virtual com port software that was freeware. It
is listed as being compatible with Vista. see Neal Campbell - New Virtual

Re: [Flexradio] Ham Radio Deluxe and PowerSDR/Flex5000A

2008-07-06 Thread Ross Stenberg
Yes, I am running as administrator and UAC is disabled. The primary symptom
here is just very sluggish operation and then eventually faulting out after
a few minutes. I think that I will try the Eterlogic virtual com port
software that Neil mentioned and see what happens. I have no idea why Vista
does not run well with the virtual com ports in this case, it is
disappointing. The odd part is that HRD (which has no issues with Vista)
supports VCom and even includes the software. It must be just some strange
Vista thing. Can't blame Billy anymore.

Okay I spent some time trying to get Eterlogic virtual com port to work
with HDR and PowerSDR. I couldn't get the HDR frequency display to update.
It would get the initial freq from PowerSDR and freeze.

Hope someone can get this to work and educate the rest of us.

[Flexradio] RX1 in/out issue with FLEX5000

2008-07-06 Thread Mike Schelly
Hello to all,

I have an issue here with a 50KW AM BC station about 6 miles away. I have
IMD/spurs/carriers all the way up from 160M to past 20M. The signal strength
of the AM 640kc station is -3dbm on the flex meter and I have crud all over
hell's half acre up thru the bands...most are just above the QRN, but
sometimes not ;-)This AM powerhouse always mixes with another station
beating together on frequencies that show up across the bands.

I purchased a KIWA BCB reject filter and put it in the RX1/2 in/out loop and
use the antenna selection option to put this inline and it definitely knocks
down the 640kc AM 70db when the flex is in GEN mode tuned to 640kc. The
problem is that when the BCB filter is inline with RX1 loop, I have major
intermod all over the bands...on 20M I heard CHU this afternoon at 14.030,
+/- propagation and AM carriers all over the spectrum, some are S9+10 in DSB
mode on 20M.

If I take the KIWA BCB reject filter and put it inline with the antenna in
any ANT1/2/3 port life is good...all the crud is gone, but I can't TX with
the KIWA BCB filter.

Anyone care to figure this one out? I know W9NQN TX/RX filters are an
option, but a $60 RX only should have worked IMHO.

Enjoy what's left of our holiday weekend!

Mike, K4EAR

[Flexradio] One problem solved, another arises

2008-07-06 Thread sdr1000
Turns out I did have a VERY noisy power supply in my PC. Different PC,
different power supply, noise all gone! But now I have a new problem. I
can't hear any signals. I hear the same noise floor even if the unit is
power off. Hooking up an antenna seems to have no effect. I tried the
thumb on the line in connector test as described in the manual in the
trouble-shooting section. That test passed. We have a very strong, 50KW AM
station just about 6 miles from here (650 WSM) and it should at least come
in. I know this could be a gazillion things, but maybe someone knows a few
things to check. It was working on the old PC, I could hear very strong
signals over the computer noise. Now that the noise is gone, so are my
signals!!! Any ideas?

[Flexradio] I'm hearing voices in my PSK31 monitor mode???

2008-07-06 Thread Dennis Petrich
Hello all,

You guys won't believe this but I'm hearing a voice when I'm in PSK31 mode
using he Hamscope software with my SDR-1000/FA-66 combo... I'm using the vCOM
to PTT the rig and VAC to get the audio to/from the SDR. Everything seems to
be working just great in receive and all other modes!!

I couldn't believe it my self. I hear what sounds like a female voice
saying five every 5 seconds or so when I'm transmitting. I discovered it
when I decided I wanted to see of Monitor mode would allow me to hear my
PSK31 transmission and it does but I hear the VOICE I shut off the
monitor and I can still see the transmit panadapter display come up during the
time the VOICE would be saying five It's like there is something in
the transmit file.

I know this sounds crazy and I havn't been drinking, honest I haven't This
is not April 1's or October 31st so I don't know what to think

Has anyone experieiced this VOICE with their Digital mode operation???

This is a common occurrance. There are two ways to avoid the voices:
1. send a check for one million dollars US to me via my qrz.com address
2. buy a copy of VAC because the demo has a voice that comes on every
few minutes that says its a demo.

I would suggest #1 but #2 is more effective hi hi!

Oh, we believe it! It sounds like you are using the trial version of VAC.
The free trial version inserts the word TRIAL into the audio stream every
few seconds. When you purchase register VAC, you will get a version that
