Re: [Flexradio] Found the FLEX-3000 latency problem

2009-05-22 Thread Brahmangou
Hi Dudley,

I'd updated the bios and every driver in the system. I tried changes in the
bios. Then I spent a night disabling every device/driver that wasn't
absolutely necessary for minimal computer operation. Then I physically removed
every unnecessary card and drive. Then I uninstalled all of the software
except XP and DPC Latency checker. I disabled all unnecessary parts of XP. I
reinstalled XP. I changed the memory. I reduced the memory to 1 meg from a
known good computer. Nothing made any improvement to the latency. All that
was left was the motherboard and processor.

I finally got through to ASUS Tech Support. They couldn't help be because
their computers were down, a bad sign, hi hi. Tech guy said all he could do
was to tell me to download the new BIOS and to reset it to default anyhow.
They would call me back when their computers were up for warranty
replacement, still waiting for that call. Removed and Replaced the motherboard
and
processor. Latency fell to the floor. Reinstalled all of the programs,
reinstalled all of the cards, HDD's, other drives and 4 GB of memory. Fresh
install of Flex driver. Fresh copy of PowerSDR. A week down the drain to get
up on XP.

The radio is working fine now. Next thing, Load Crysis and play on-line
tonight. That will give the processor a good thrashing to see what it is made
out of and let me blow off some steam. I have a good baseline on my Vista
Quad Core to compare against. Thanks again Dudley, and a special thanks to
Neal. Neal and I exchanged emails for 3 days trying to sort this out.

Well, I'm off to fight aliens and Nazi zombies.

As with all solved problems, replacing the motherboard made sense. He
was seeing all of his devices show up on IRQ 18 no matter what we
did.

I am beginning to thing that for anyone having performance issues, the
first thing to look at is the IRQ view of the Device Manager and what
other devices are sharing the same IRQ as the firewire card!

[Flexradio] Latest skins update

2009-05-22 Thread Tim Cook
I was using Betty periodically with good results. Last night I did a
update and now the audio is all messed up. The check boxes for
speakers and headphones are erratic and there is no audio. The
internal speaker slider is operational even though I have a Flex 5K.
The regular release 1.18.0 still works ok. Any ideas? I think I did
the update ok, just right clicked the svn icon for 1.19.0 and updated
it.

There are some test programs available that can independently measure
performance of various systems within the computer and report a
metric. PerformanceTest comes to mind. It reports several numbers of
interest. Also the DPC latency checker(?) Perhaps other test programs
are around that report firewire performance, etc - might be possible
to put together a diagnostic suite that could evaluate a given
machine as to suitability, or to help reveal the problem when
performance is not satisfactory

In regards to a Firewire performance checker, both Dudley and I have looked,
but due to the Firewire architecture, there are just not any Firewire
performance tools out there to be found.

I postulated at Dayton that you could setup a point-to-point Firewire based IP
network and use some off the shelf IP network performance monitors to determine
a raw bit rate throughput number, but I really don't have the inclination to
cable up two PCs via Firewire to see if that really would have any benefit. My
shack is in the if it ain't broke, don't change it mode of operation since I
just got everything re-cabled and back on the air last week.

Hi,

I have the same problem (on F5K and F3K) on a TouchSmart IQ500 from HP.

After a lot of test, disabling all devices disabled, I found the
problem which cause the drop

of latency, with stops or motorboard PowerSDR:

The videocard (NVIDIA serie 9000) and firewire share the same IRQ !!!

Solution ? Only two:

1 - disable the videocard's driver and use it with standards windows
driver (with low performance)

2 - put in the trash the new HP (1500,00 $)

Is incredible which HP uses this motherboard on one most expensive PC
of his collection !

There is not solution on BIOS or chipset upgrade.

That's truly hideous.

Is this an on-board FireWire controller?

If so, disable it and get a plug-in card.

If the firewire controller is on a plug-in card, move the FireWire
controller to another slot (typically, just one slot over).

key manually by shorting the center of the port to ground so this leaves the

Just use the up/down controls at the right hand side of the slider for fine
increment settings once you are in the ball park of where you want to set the

I find the lack of spin buttons for AF Gain, Squelch, etc., a nuisance.
I cannot reliably move the sliders just one step at a time (but perhaps that's
just me). And why, when I click, do the sliders move 5 steps at a time? -- not
to the nearest 5 in the specified direction, but to 5 more or less than the
current setting? E.g., if I had managed to set the AF Gain slider to 32,
clicking to the right would take it not to 35 but to 37.

As it was just pointed out to me, the spin controls are not on the new Pretty

[Flexradio] Frequency change by sliding across panadapter

2009-05-22 Thread NZ8J
Wasn't really sure how to title this. Up until a day or so ago I was
able to smoothly change the freq on my Flex 5K (1.18.0) by left
clicking and holding while sliding across the panadapter. Now all of a
sudden it will slide part way and then hang up. If I let up on the mouse
and click again I can continue fine.

I haven't changed anything that I can recall. Changing the freq this
way on Betty works fine, no problems. The CPU usage is down around
10% to 15%. It doesn't change when the slider hangs up.

Any suggestions?
Thanks

I have seen this when first firing up 1.18.0. I had to uncheck the TX port
that I would normally use and then recheck it for the radio to key the amp.
Try checking a different Tx port and then go back to the one you normally
use. Beats the heck out of me.

2009-05-22 Thread Tim Ellison
I can click and drag the panadapter for the full width of my computer screen
(even outside the PowerSDR window once I start dragging)

It a feature of the software.

Spur Reduction has nothing to do with the dragging of the spectrum. Having it
off generates a ton of DDS MIDI control messages and screen re-paints that
cause the jittery display when dragging. Turning SR on reduces the number of
messages sent between the radio hardware and PowerSDR.

The spin controls (up/down buttons) are not a component of the graphical slider
controls in Pretty Petty displays. Nothing is wrong with your computers.

I miss these up/down control buttons as well and if others have them maybe
something is wrong with several of my computers that I have ran Pretty Betty on
but my Pretty Betty release (latest download) doesn't have the below up/down
buttons to the right hand side or above these sliders AF, AGC-T, Drive,
Squelch, MIC, DX, CPDR, VOX, or Gate.

Just use the up/down controls at the right hand side of the slider for fine
increment settings once you are in the ball park of where you want to set the
slider.

You are missing the point. You asked about dragging outside of the panadapter

The state of the Spur Reduction control (on or off) has a secondary effect that
manifests itself as a jittery display (not a smooth drag) and/or audio drop

algorithm used to render the Panadapter when the DDS is being changed.

The original problem didn't mention spur reduction at all, but rather
mentioned the fact that that panadapter would hang when dragging it with the

there is a connection between the two. And apparently turning spur

So let me rephrase my question in a way that you may understand. What

Clay,

Since (as Tim noted) there is so much more data being generated when you
drag the mouse w/ SR turned off, it is far more taxing on the computers
resources (particularly on the video updates). Some computers and video
cards handle it better and more gracefully than others. If yours handles
it well, then you'd probably notice little, if any, difference. With SR
on or off, the same thing is going on. Just lots more bits to deal with
when it's turned off.

byslidingacrosspanadapter

Clay,

You are missing the point. You asked about dragging outside of the
panadapter and the frequency still being changed (see where I reposted
your quote). That has nothing to do with Spur Reduction being on or off.

The state of the Spur Reduction control (on or off) has a secondary
effect that manifests itself as a jittery display (not a smooth drag)
and/or audio drop outs when dragging the console to tune the radio and
it is related to the algorithm used to render the Panadapter when the
DDS is being changed.

My original reply to Tim contained a link to the Knowledge Center that
describes the advantages and disadvantages of using Spur Reduction.
Refer to the last paragraph.

OK, but wasn't the original problem in this thread the fact that Tim
couldn't drag the panadapter without it hanging when Spur Reduction is
off?
He turned Spur Reduction on and fixed that problem, and now you're
telling me that Spur Reduction has nothing to do with dragging the
current frequency. If that's the case then why did you ask him if
Spur Reduction is off? Exactly what is the limitation when Spur
Reduction is off that Tim was experiencing in the original question?

I can click and drag the panadapter for the full width of my
computer screen (even outside the PowerSDR window once I start dragging)

It a feature of the software.

Spur Reduction has nothing to do with the dragging of the spectrum.
Having it off generates a ton of DDS MIDI control messages and screen
re-paints that cause the jittery display when dragging. Turning SR on
reduces the number of messages sent between the radio hardware and
PowerSDR.

2009-05-22 Thread Eric Wachsmann
This is a function of raw processing power and what else is going on in the
machine. The point is that with SR off, dragging the spectrum is much more
expensive computationally as it sends a tuning command for each pixel
dragged. This can cause lower priority threads (like the display) to stall
if the CPU can't keep up.

Now I feel foolish.. Yes it was off and when I turned it on it works
 like I was accustomed to.

 Thanks Tim...

 panadapter

Wasn't really sure how to title this. Up until a day or so ago I was
able to smoothly change the freq on my Flex 5K (1.18.0) by left
clicking and holding while sliding across the panadapter. Now all of a
sudden it will slide part way and then hang up. If I let up on the mouse
and click again I can continue fine.

I haven't changed anything that I can recall. Changing the freq this
way on Betty works fine, no problems. The CPU usage is down around
10% to 15%. It doesn't change when the slider hangs up.

 Any suggestions?
 Thanks
 Tim
