Re: [Flexradio] Hooking up band-switching linear
Hi Dave Congrats on the new amp, I would love to have one myself! I think you need to download DDUtil (link is in a knowledge center document or a friendly google search). DDU will allow you to repeat the cat output from the flex to another serial port. Assign it to a physical com port and then connect that serial port to your amp (since the Flex is emulating the TS2000 Kenwood I assume you would tell the amp that its talking to a kenwood rig). I am not sure but would suppose that you would need a null modem cable to do the job. Check out the ddutil documentation and see if it isn't exactly what you need! 73 Neal k3nc On Sat, May 30, 2009 at 1:20 AM, Dave Gomberg wrote: > Well I caved in and bought a Tokyo HyPower HL1.5KFx. Re: [Flexradio] FLEX5000 ATU issue
I am also having problems with ATU. It takes a while (few seconds to tune) and then either times out or states that no match can be found. But when I transmit the fwd power is around 10 watts and 1 or less reflected and raising drive so the power reads 60 or more watts the reflected reads 1 or 2 watts (or less after adjusting the BigIR). The SWR meter position does not change from 0.0:1.1. However sometimes the radio does say that the antenna did tune properly. Any suggestions? I started with the bottom two and then added two more. I did find after Neal suggested looking at the connections view that I had diabled the two root hubs servicing the enhanced USB controllers. I added these back as I looked at the latency and found one added about 15 microseconds and adding the second back was doubled at around 120 microseconds. For those with drop out problems, I would start at the > USB folder in your device manager and see how many you can live > with. Dale KC2PZ > Neal's advice to look at the IRQ sharing carefully is good advice. In terms of USB: The USB controller story is confusing, and I'd suggest folks not "go there" by default. Here's why you see so many USB controllers on a system: Remember that we have USB V2.0 (supporting High Speed) that's backwards compatible to USB V1.0 and V1.1 (supporting Low Speed and Full Speed). They way they get this backwards compatibility is pretty strange. USB V2 controllers are EHCI controllers -- You'll see them listed as "USB2 Enhanced Host Controller" in device manager. Every EHCI controller has built into it 4 (count em) UHCI or OHCI controllers. These controllers handle backwards compatibility (low-speed and full-speed devices), and appear to Windows as entirely separate devices. Because, they ARE (effectively) entirely separate devices. In addition, each of these controllers has an associated Root Hub. That's what provides the on-board USB sockets to plug into. So, with just one USB V2.0 controller you get: 1 USB V2.0 High Speed controller (EHCI) 4 USB Low Speed / Full Speed controllers (OHCI or UHCI) 5 Root Hubs Disable the EHCI controller, and you won't have any more support for High Speed. Disable one of the root hubs, the built-in USB ports on your machine will stop working. The moral of the story: Feel free to disable stuff. Now at least I hope you have a better idea of what you're disabling. Just wait until we have USB V3.0 (USB Super Speed) to deal with. Oh, that'll be a treat. Re: [Flexradio] Audio Drop-out Latency
I think the issue here is not purely USB controllers but IRQ sharing. If you disable a USB controller that isn't sharing an IRQ with the Flex, its probably not going to show this level of performance increase. Go to device manager, select the Show by Connection item under the View then expand the IRQ button. When you find your 1394 device, see what other device is on the same IRQ. Try to disable any of these devices that handle a lot of data (USB, etc). [Flexradio] SDR-1000 and SB-200
Hi all, I just recently picked up a nice Heathkit SB-200 amplifier to run with my SDR-1000. The SB-200 has the Harbach softkey mod, so the keying line has only a couple of volts and milliamps on it. Problem is the X2 port on the SDR won't fully key the amp. I can hear the amp relay "click", but I show no idle current. When I apply drive the amp relay starts clicking and cycling. Power out of the amp is all over the place. A direct short to ground across the keying line and the amp works fine...90ma of idle current and 600 stable watts out when I drive the amp with the SDR. For the time being I'm using a footswitch to key the amp. But I'd rather have the SDR directly keying the amp. So other than adding another relay between the X2 port and the amp keying jack, does anyone have a better idea? BTW, I've tried pin 7 plus several other X2 keying ports with the same results. X2 TR sequencing is turned on. I cannot imagine a circumstance that it wouldn't be compatible, I think I have run Vista 32 on that exact card. The only issue would be whether Vista would not have a driver for it and if you can't find a vista driver, in all likelihood the XP driver would work. Re: [Flexradio] Freeze-ups on new Flex-3000
The major saving will be to turn off indexing which wakes up periodically and scans your disk for changes (eats up disk and processor). I also recommend changing the Performance tab to be performance oriented versus presentation oriented, and just turn on a few presentation options like smoothed fonts. I turn Aero off also, so my Vista machine looks as close to XP as it can get. Also, and this is where your brains will scream at you, but I have never found any antivirus program that didn't mess up my SDR machine (and I have tried a bunch of them). So I leave them off. Especially anything that does "real time protection". Commercial machines (i.e. ones you don't build yourself) comes with a lot of what microsoft calls "crapware" that can eat away at your processor capacity so delete all of those too (unless you are really using them). Re: [Flexradio] Flex3000 on 6m
That's very good to hear, Alf. Sure wish the 5000 had a noise figure that good on 6 meters. Sadly, it doesn't and requires a pace maker (preamp) and some care to get to that level. 73 Joel W5ZN Date: Thu, 28 May 2009 15:50:31 -0700 From: Alfred Green Subject: [Flexradio] Flex3000 on 6m To: FlexRadio reflector Message-ID: <4a1f1537.2090...@cox.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed Now that the 6m E-season is starting, I've had a load of fun with the 3000 on the Magic Band. It is really great to see the activity pop up on the panadaptor, and also see (and avoid) the birdies and general crud that is the bane of operating 6m in an urban area. I was worried that I may not have enough sensitivity, based on comments received from those running the F5000, but I really don't have an issue with that. Going from a good 50ohm termination to the actual antenna, a 6M7JHV at 60ft, I see between 10 and 15dB increase in noise level depending on direction. Adding an external preamp would not give any benefit in my case, although for someone in a much quieter location that may be desirable. I do have a precision noise head, and measured the noise figure at 7.6dB, using the Y-factor method. That is pretty good, compared to many other rigs, and is certainly good enough for my location. All measurements are with the internal preamp ON. The receiver is essentially bomb-proof. I have a number of well equipped stations very close to me that used to completely flatten my 706, but with the 3000 I don't even know they are on, except for the huge peaks on the panadaptor! I have worked a few stations on 6 running the F5000, but so far noone using a F3000. I know they are out there; load up a piece of wire and get on. For the next couple of months the band is going to be hopping! 73 Alf NU8I Scottsdale AZ DM43an ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Then in XP make sure that you have performed the Hot Fixes for the FireWire depending on the service pack installed. http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50281.aspx I have PowerSDR working perfectly on two different laptops, Lenovo T400 and T60. It helps if the laptop has a separate video card to take some of the load off the processor. Big thing when watching the DPC is to also watch the Processes in Task Manager so you can tell what process is causing the big DPC spike. I have heard of DPC peaking as high as 30,000 (biggy bump) but the duration can be important also, you can see that pretty easy with the separate DPC utility. http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50058.aspx 73, Dudley WA5QPZ Tim Ellison wrote: Since both of you are running laptops, I have noticed that the wireless transmitter (for Internet access) on some laptops is the prime culprit of sucking the performance "life" out of those machines. Check to see if you have things like virus protection and software based firewalls running on the laptop. One other thing to check is to see if there is something using the hard drive, like Microsoft Search 4.0. Laptops have poor disk performance and if there is something indexing the hard drive, that will cause the long duration DPCs. Re: [Flexradio] using the F5K with Remoteconnection (windows) - audio problem
As Tim mentioned, you need Skype, IP-Sound, or other software to transport the audio between computers; The remote sound features of Remote Desktop will not work in this case. If you are using Microsoft's Remote Desktop, make sure your audio settings are set to "Leave audio at remote computer" (or something to that effect). You also will need to have VAC installed and configured. Make sure in Skype that the audio input is set to the SDR's VAC output, and Skype output is set to VAC's input. Make the audio connection and RDP connection, turn on the radio, and enable VAC. That's about all there is to it! Re: [Flexradio] Freeze-ups on new Flex-3000
Dave, Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I did disable the root device and of course the Firewire card isn't even seen then. But it was worth a try. I agree that a dedicated machine is ultimately the ticket. And DEFINITELY not a laptop. I would not disable things to the point you did, but the point is taken that having a machine that doesn't have any other garbage riding on it and only the necessary hardware is the right path. But this is not in the financial picture right now. Perhaps in a few months down the road. I had to buy a new motherboard and processor which solved all the problems I was having originally with my flex 5k. New clean install of windows also. I was not prepared to compromise. A decent computer is so integral to making the flex work well it seems odd that people are so intent on making their current computers do the job. My flex computer only runs the flex and does nothing else. Stripped it back to the basics and it isn't even connected to the internet as I disabled the ethernet ports. It runs in the normal mode and what ever latencies I choose. No freezes and no shut downs..stay on for days at a time. JMHO ! It is called "Intel IC8H Family PSI Express root port 2845", which would appear to be something associated with the very slot the ExpressCard is plugged into. It is listed under System Devices. Now whether this is normal or not, I have no way of knowing. Regardless, I do not see any way of changing the IRQ for either device, like we could in the "good old days". I took these thoughts a bit further and realized I had installed Vcom in order to try to use Ham Radio Deluxe. (Which I never got off the ground, but that is something for another thread.) So I uninstalled it and this didn't have any affect either. I may try getting things running on my older Prescott chipped 4 GHz workstation. When you bring it up, click on the Views menu and select by connection type menu item. Search the entries for your 1394a card and see what else is being shared on the same interrupt. Usually, high DPC is a result of having the fireware card on the same interrupt as a nigh-usage IRQ (like maybe its sharing its IRQ with the USB controllers, video card, graphic cards, etc.) Let me know what you find. Re: [Flexradio] Freeze-ups on new Flex-3000
Neal, Thanks for the info. Answering questions: -Yep, you can't disable the PSI root port, else the Firewire card isn't even seen. Makes sense, but I tried it just to make sure. - Not much Vista tweaking has been done. I went to tweakhound.com and read over a good portion on there. There is nothing that jumps out and bites me and says, yes, this could bog things down. Not that I have tried everything he suggests, as this will takes DAYS! I also believe there is a basic underlying problem and it isn't some esoteric Vista setting that squeezes another 2% out. - I did the HD check for errors. It was fine. - No, the PSD hangs, there is no increase in system utilization. So that makes me wonder if there is a way to give PSD greater priority for processor time than anything else running. You know how bad Vista is about doing things in the background you are unaware of. Just a thought. - I am not normally doing searches when PSD is running, so I don't know how much file indexing is coming into play. I could disable the indexing, but I can live with a dropout if I do a search or just disable it later if I start searching while running PSD. Have you done any Vista tweaking yet? One thing is make sure that you have disabled TCPIP over your firewire card. You can go to www.tweakhound.com and look up his article on tweaking vista, It is not as effective a tweaking XP just because it is so much larger/ Also, make sure you have performed a disk ckeck operation (by right clicking on the disk icon and then selecting the Toops tab, then click on automatically fix all errors. Since it will be your boot drive you cannot succeed so click yes when it suggests that you reboot your system. When PowerSDR hangs, do you have high CPU utilization (e.g. 60+%) If so, try setting the run time priority to above average in your setuip menu. Finally, if you still have file indexing active, you should try defeating that and let your searches take a bit longer instead of causing your machine to be slowed down.
