Re: [Flexradio] Windows 7 Tweaks

2010-01-30 Thread Neal Campbell
Hi Eddie

Thanks for the note and good information that it all works well.

The readers need to understand that Windows 7 Pro and Windows 7 Ultimate
(but not Home Premium, etc) include the right to download an XP virtual
machine which can be run with Microsoft's Virtual PC.

There are two features offered by Win7 Pro and Ultimate:
1. Windows XP compatibility
2. Windows XP emulation.

Windows xp compatibility is a setting you can make on a per program basis to
use XP-compatible features of Win7 in order to give poorly written programs
a better chance of running under Win 7. To enable this, right click on the
program's .exe file and select Properties. You will see a tab in the
resulting display called Compatibility and there you can check that you want
to run the program under XP compability mode. This feature is available in
all versions of Win7 (I believe) except the Starter Edition which most of us
cannot buy anyway.

Windows emulation mode is a different thing. You are installing the program
in a virtual PC environment which, for all practical purposes, is separate
from the Windows 7 environment (although it can share folders and internet
access with the mothership (the Windows 7 environment). So you can install a
program in both the Win7 environment and the virtual XP environment and they
operate a separate programs. Remember you cannot operate PowerSDR in the XP
virtual machine because it does not support firewire connections plus you
can expect additional latencies runing PowerSDR inside two operating
systems.

Hope this helps explain the XP emulation mode. Its still very handy outside
of PowerSDR and is the reason I install Windows 7 Pro for customers wanting
to run win7.

There is no way to change the IRQ, you are stuck with it. If there is another
pci slot in your computer (and assuming that you are using a non-onboard
firewire port), move your card and then see if/what IRQ it shares a device with.

The USB wifi stick is still a good alternative though!

It does, you are sharing the interrupt with your lan port. I assume you
are using the RJ45 plug in the motherboard?

You can try to disable it and use a USB wifi stick (or not use the
internet at all),

If you need help on how to disable it, let me know!

Go to your control panel, double-click on System and when that window
pops up, go to the Hardware tab, then click on the button called Device Manager.

When the device manager window appears, go to the views menu at the
top of the window and select View by Connection. When this display appears,
click on the plus sign by the IRQ line,

When the list of devices, sorted by the interrupt (IRQ) appears, look
for your firewire card. To the left of it will be a number which is the
interrupt number assigned to your fiirewire card. Tell us what other devices
have the same number besides them as your firewire card. That could help us
tremendously!

I know this question has been asked before but I could not find the
 answer so here it goes,
My Flex 5K was running ok, some lockups once in a while but not as bad
 as
now that when the DX summit page is refreshed or while surfing the web
 it
happens. (it happened several times while writing this email)

Two changes since that time, installed DDUtil and installed a new two
monitor graphics card. (Radeon HD 4650 1GB GDDR2 Memory)

Running Windows Vista 32 bit SP2 HP Pavillion Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
 2.00GB RAM

Flex setup 96KHZ buffer size 2048 Safe level 3 (latency (max) 15119us)

 Any suggestions besides changing computer?

Go to your control panel, double-click on System and when that window pops
up, go to the Hardware tab, then click on the button called Device Manager.

When the device manager window appears, go to the views menu at the top of
the window and select View by Connection. When this display appears, click on
the plus sign by the IRQ line,

When the list of devices, sorted by the interrupt (IRQ) appears, look for
your firewire card. To the left of it will be a number which is the interrupt
number assigned to your fiirewire card. Tell us what other devices have the
same number besides them as your firewire card. That could help us tremendously!

We all went thru the cockpit errors so no shame in that. You might see us
continually point people to the knowledge center and the reason for that
isn't that we don't want to help, its because I use it almost every day and
want people to know what a goldmine of information is there. There is hardly
anything learned over the past 4 years that isn't in there somewhere.

Its like a combination of mini-Dudley and mini-Tim!

Re: [Flexradio] Windows 7 Tweaks

2010-01-30 Thread VK4AN

Have just gone through the tribulations of installing Win7 Ultimate x64...
and have had good success with it using SDR 1.18.3, plus all the associated
drivers and interfaces.
I also use VPCE4 (64bit), VAC, N1MM, MMTTY, LOGic8...all working as they
should.
My PC is dual-core AMD CPU, Gigabyte motherboard, 1gb video card with 2 DVI
monitors, 8gb RAM, 1 80GB HDD for operating system, 2 500GB HDD's for data
and backup, 4-port firewire card.

I guess the main precaution before installing the programs is to decide
whether to install them on the same HDD as your OS. Most programs that work
on the XP-32bit OS will automatically be installed in the "Program
Files(x86)" directory... as win7ultimate can easily run XP programs... not
sure about the other versions on win7... but win7ultimate actually states
that it has an XP-32 emulation in the 64-bit version.

Anyway...that's how this ol' 68yo understands it (could be wrong!)... and
maybe it's just 'dumb luck' that all the old programs work OK :)

Hi Guys,

I am wondering if anyone knows of any good performance tweaks for windows 7
(x64)
I have noticed a cpu usage of windowsxp sp3 to be around 25% in powersdr
while in win7 its 40-50-60%

Are there any firewire patches, registry tweaks for firewire or anything
else i could try?

Cheers

[Flexradio] How we can help

2010-01-30 Thread Neal Campbell
Hi everyone

I know we have said this before but its worth repeating:
If you have problems with your Flex radio, we can help you. Outside of the
odd hardware problem, there are few problems we cannot help you solve.

But, just like they teach in communications courses, your chances of success
increase dramatically with the way you ask for help.

Firstly, give us some symptoms of the problem rather than say "doesn't work"
or similar. The more we can "see" the symptoms, the more it will relate to
previous problems we have seen and fixed.

Secondly, since this is a Computer Defined Radio, the computer or operator
error is 90% of the problems. Usually, you can find an answer to the
operator error type of problem in the knowledge center. I understand that if
you don't know the answer is in the knowledge center, you might not look for
it there, but I can find many KC articles from a simple Google search.
Always try google with your problem, for me its a 95% winner.

Thirdly, we need to feel like we are sitting in front of your computer:
- What processor is your system using?
- How much memory?
- Run DPCLat and tell us what the DPC rate looks like, especially if
something periodic is happening and you are lucky enough to be running
DPCLat when it happens.
- Look in the device manager, select View by Connection from the View menu
item and tell us what other devices are on the same IRQ (interrupt) as your
firewire card.
- If the cpu processor utilization is above 40%, tell us.
- What operating system are you using? Are you running an older service pack
or have the latest updates applied?
- Has the problem just started happening and if so, can you remember
anything that happened to the computer around the same time?

If you describe problems with these aspects, your chance of a timely
solution increase dramatically!

Mario,

You said your latency is 15119us?? You should get the latency below
2000us to be consistent, some have gotten core2Duos to run under 100us.
Be sure to turn the Wireless and bluetooth drivers off, and make sure
your Power Options in the control panel is set to High Performance. Other
than that..

What are the details? Of the system and what versions of PowerSDR and FW
are you trying to run?

Very peculiar... because the guy who owns this software (Michael Tippach) was
commenting on it as recently as 4 days ago on his forum. The forum for the
program is here: http://mtippach.proboards.com/index.cgi

If you don't trust any of the random downloads you can find via Google (there
are many of them), you might try posting something in the ASIO4ALL forum and
ask what's up with the web site (yes, the forum is in English).

[Flexradio] ASIO file needed

2010-01-30 Thread Army Curtis - AE5P
If you are an old timer with Flex radios, you may be able to help. I'm
trying to bring up an older SDR-1000 on a laptop to use as a demonstration
program at our ham radio club meeting. Because of the laptop, I'm trying to
do this using an older Creative Sound Blaster USB external sound card. I was
able to find the drivers for the SB, but in the early days of this neat
stuff, you also needed a file asio4all to make things work. The web site
referenced in the PowerSDR software is no longer up, and I have not been
successful in finding this file in my many secret filing places ;o) If
someone out there has this file, could you drop me a note please?

Thanks much for any help.

[Flexradio] WIN 7 & Shuttle Pro install question

2010-01-30 Thread deuhs
Hello,

I have a new WIN 7 computer and am having trouble making my Shuttle Pro V2
work. It appears the drivers loaded and I was able to import the PWRSDR data.

The shuttle worked fine on my old XP machine.

I'm sure there's got to be a "botton" I'm missing. My new computer reports the
Shuttle is insatlled and working properly.

Greg

It was inferred that you had a 1st generation SDR like the SDR-1000 since all
newer SDR from FlexRadio do use sound cards.

Although the driver versions are not the same, I believe your driver issue can
be resolved by using the advice in this KB article
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50012.aspx.

I suspect you will encounter additional issues with Win7 x64 and the SDR-1000
due to driver signing issues. The combination of Win7 x64 and the SDR-1000 is
not a fully supported configuration.

A. Is Win7RC even useable in this way?

B. I get an error that starts out "unable to load deltapnl.dll"
Anyone know off hand what causes this?

I have installed ".net 1.1", with an error about platform.
I have installed MDAC 2.8

I know I have seen comments about some of the issues with Win7 on the
list, but this one does not ring any bells.
