there any that stands out (or are they all toast)? I run WinXP on Latitude

anything else up and audio breaks up with or without VAC.

Do we have a list/grid of off-the-shelf model laptops on the wiki or

if we did.

[Flexradio] newbie question

2011-06-22 Thread Michael Goins
Still setting up a 1500 here and the issue of the moment is noise
threshold.

I am in the country and the radio I removed to replace with the 1500 had a
noise level of S1 or so. With the 1500, I am up around S5 as baseline noise
level. Nothing else has changed.

The receiver is hotter, but not tremendously so, and I do not have the rig
strapped to the computer yet and I'm hoping that is some of the issue.

Re: [Flexradio] newbie question

2011-06-22 Thread EB4APL

Mike,

Are you sure that your other radio is in calibration?
The Flexes are very accurate in respect to their signal level
indication, so if you are getting S5 (with the antenna connected, I
hope), it means that you are getting -97 dBm noise in the selected
bandwidth. If you connect either receiver input to a 50 Ohm load you
will see the receiver background noise and if you have access to a
calibrated signal generator you can measure the minimum discernible
signal on either receiver.
Your statement that the 1500 is hotter makes me think that the other
receiver is deaf, at least in S units reading, since the opposite is
usually the case because the Flexes trend is to give lower readings.
They have a truly calibrated S meter and most receivers don't, and
usually are really optimistic.
Other cause could be the 1500 S meter became uncalibrated, but it is
unlikely. If you can do the signal generator test you can verify this
and if it is out of cal, the calibration procedure takes less than a minute.

2011-06-22 Thread Tony Estep
Well, give it a chance, Mike. It may just be a question of different S-meter
calibration. The real determining factor is whether or not it can hear weak
signals in the noise as well as your previous receiver. You can test this by
setting up some sort of A/B switching. The 1500 has its faults, but in my
experience the receiver is not one of them. It's a pretty good performer.

The S-meter on all Flex radios is calibrated like a RF spectrum analyzer to
S9 = -73 dBm = 50 uV, so what you are seeing ins actual power in the RX pass
band.

Since you are seeing integrated power, the size of the RX filter is a
determining factor. If you are using a 3K filter, change it to 500 Hz and
notice the reduction in signal power (strength).

Also other radio's S-meter is effected by the RF gain and AGC. Not so with
the FlexRadio SDRs. These factors can account for the difference.

Re: [Flexradio] audiodg.exe

2011-06-22 Thread Leif Asbrink
Hi David and all,

Just found a nasty little feature in Win/Vista and Win/7, named
audiodg.exe. This is a required audio driver that attempts to
isolate processes audio routing graphs for security purposes. Problem
is, the cure is almost as bad as the disease they are trying to prevent.

Nasty indeed. Here is a link to what I had to say about it when trying
Vista and Win 7 for the first time:
http://www.sm5bsz.com/linuxdsp/run/snd-compat/d44-cpuload.htm

That was nearly two years ago. audiodg.exe is probably not as cpu-hungry
today if Windows Update has been used as it should. Nevertheless it
is a problem by adding extra delay and probably other problems.

We can avoid audiodg.exe by use of ASIO or WDM-KS. Right now I am
doing tests with Linrad using Portaudio for both input and output.
WDM-KS works fine for some hardware combinations under Vista. It
seems to me that Portaudio is not yet quite stable (or the WDM-KS
drivers are sometimes defective.) When running on slow computers
I see odd problems sometimes.

I think WDM-KS should be preferred over ASIO because one can open
several WDM-KS drivers simultaneously while one can only open a
single ASIO device. One can open ASIO in RDWR mode, but I find it
inconvenient to have to use 96kHz/24 bit in four channels for the
loudspeaker output.

It is possible to use ASIO for 96kHz/24bit rx input and Tx output
in RDWR mode, but microphone input and loudspeaker output can
conveniently go through a low speed 16 bit audio channel which would
have to be WDM-KS since a second ASIO is not allowed. (the other
alternatives would involve audiodg.exe problems...)

[Flexradio] Amp switching Buffer for 5K

Flex 5K manual recommends using an outboard circuit to key an amp since the
keying lines use a Darlington transistor switch rated at 400 ma @50 volts.
If you don't want to built your own K4AVU makes them at a fair price. (
half the price of the Ameritron 704) Be sure to tell him it's for a 5K

The first thing you need to know is that, unlike the average ham rig, the
Flex S-meter is calibrated. S-9 is 50uV into 50ohms and 1 S-unit is exactly
6dB. It is normal for the flex radios to have a non-zero S-meter reading
with the preamp off. Here is an approximate table:

SuV
950
825
712
6 6
5 3
4 1.5
3 0.75
2 0.37
1 0.2

You will probably need the preamp to reach below S-3, even with a dummy
load.

Since band data is produced by PowerSDR and not by the radio hardware it
makes sense to have the band data come from the computer. There is no
standard for outputing band data to devices. The closest thing I have found
is the Kenwood CAT command set used by Kenwood, Flex, Elecraft, and others.
Some older radios use analog voltages (older ICOM and Yaesu radios) and some
also use BCD (binary parallel). Still, serial is the most flexible and the
most compatible.

I would be surprised if the KPA500 does not accept the Kenwood CAT commands
to set band as that is what the K2 and K3 normally generate through their
serial ports. It appears that you can connect to RS-232 connector #8 on the
back of the KPA500 for this. (Probably, I am guessing but I have been able
to control other Elecraft devices from the computer this way and they do
suggest that it can be controlled from a Kenwood radio via this connector.)
If that is the case then you just need a serial connection from the computer
running PowerSDR and the KPA500. If you wish to use digital mode programs
like fldigi or Ham Radio Deluxe you will need to use DDutil to repeat the
CAT data to the KPA500.

Re: [Flexradio] Band data from a Flex-5000 to the Elecraft KPA500 amp?

2011-06-22 Thread Lyle Johnson
The KPA500 measures its RF input and switches within milliseconds to to
the correct band, so if the Flex model you wish to use with it doesn't
output band data you'll only lose part of the first dit (if sending CW)
or the first syllable (if SSB) or the first... and only when you change
bands.

Of course, the radio DOES need to output a Tx enable signal (pull to
ground) to switch from Tx to Rx :-)

Zack,

Digging farther, I now think I spoke too soon. I believed that the band-data
output from the 5000 came in a well-documented and easy-to-access form.
Maybe it does, but if so I can't find the info. Perhaps some public-spirited
guy with the right gear and a weekend to spare will figure out the serial
data stream and design a decoder for it, and publish his results for all to

You can find the Flex-specific in the Flex knowledge base at:

As I indicated above, it is already published. For the most part it is
identical to the Kenwood TS-2000 CAT command set and PowerSDR identifies as
a Kenwood TS-2000 by default. Most software that knows how to communicate
with a Kenwood TS-2000 with work with PowerSDR with little or no
modification.

The important thing that DDutil does is to act as a repeater for various
commands so that you can have many devices plugged in at the same time.

If the KPA500 RADIO menu is set to SERIAL, then it will accept
frequency information in Kenwood format over the RS232 X (radio) connector.

PTT is a physical signal that must be passed to the RCA connector or the
DE-15 accessory connector. The amplifier does not parse any command for
PTT, nor does it use DTR/RTS/etc for PTT information. This is so you
can daisy-chain your Steppir relay, or ATU tune control in series to
prevent the KPA500 from going active if there is a reason to prevent it
from doing so.

Re: [Flexradio] [Flexradio} Band data from a Flex-5000 to the Elecraft KPA500 amp?

2011-06-22 Thread Don
As I’m always interested in amplifiers I decided to take a quick look at the
manual for the KPA500 amp.

I have not done an in depth review of the manual but this is what I have found
so far.

1. Page 8 of Owners Manual
“ The KPA500 automatically measures the frequency of the RF drive and
selects the proper band.
Apparently like most modern devices the amplifier will automatically band
switch with just the frequency input.
This bypasses the need for any special hardware or software.

2. Page 16 of Owners Manual
BCD can be set to the KPA500 using the AUX Connector Interface. (Page 16 of
of owners manual)
This is a DB-15 pin connector.
Pin 5 is ground
Pin 13 is Bit 0
Pin 3 is Bit 1
Pin 9 is Bit 2
Pin 14 is Bit 3

In addition Pin 10 can be used to key the amplifier and Pin 11 can be used
to inhibit the amplifier operation (good for SteppIR’s)

3. There are 2- RS232 connections. On is for connection to a PC used for for
firmware updates. The other is connects the amplifier
to Kenwood transceivers.

Seems to me that using one of the above methods you should be able to connect
this amplifier to just about any computer or radio.

There is certainly much more information in the manual but it appears to me
that this amplifier can be driven from several different sources.

** Has a built in power supply, 100-120V, 200-250V.
** Frequency coverage 160-6M
** Kit price $2000.00 ($1999.95), factory assembled $2400 ($2399.95) for 500
Watts ??

Maybe it's just me, but that seems like an awfully unusual value to choose.

Not sure that is so. If you turn your exciter down to that level it is going
to be cleaner than if running near its 1dB compression point. Also the drive
requirement is going to be determined also by device gain. I regularly use
an IC-2KL with the 3000 and have to turn the 3000 down to about 25W as the
amp has 13dB of gain and a max output of 500W. So far I haven't had any
problems.

Re: [Flexradio] Band data from a Flex-5000 to the Elecraft KPA500 amp?

2011-06-22 Thread Mike va3mw
Why not use the SGC 500 if you only need 500 watts?

I was disappointed that the Flex series of radios did not follow the
SDR-1000 in having a direct output for band data signals. My SDR-1000 is
directly connected to a Quadra and can bandswitch it independently of
DDutil, etc. My 5000a requires a parallel port and DDutil to do the same.

It appears that Flexradio had intended to make an interface unit for the
5000a/3000 that would have plugged in to the flexport (name?) and allowed
them to do this, but it must have fallen through the cracks.
