One would hope that all of the default parameters would be such that a
simple mic gain adjustment to allow for different microphones and voice
levels would be sufficient.

You need to go through the audio chain setup sequence. It is described in
the KB library. In a nutshell:

1. Turn off all options, e.g. DX, CPDR, VOX, DEXP in the mic window on
the front console.
2. Set mic gain to mid scale (35).
3. Open the Mixer menu.
4. Select your mic input.
5. Set TX power to 0 (so you don't actually transmit or you can use a
dummy load).
6. Select mic input level display on the TX meter.
7. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the slider in the MIXER for
not more than 0dB on meter.
8. Set TX meter to read EQ level.
9. Open the Equalizer menu.
10. Set the TX EQ the way you want it.
11. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the TX Preamp gain control
for not more than 0dB on meter.
12. Open the Setup>DSP>AGC/ALC window.
13. Enable the leveler (check the box).
14. Set Leveler Max Gain to 0dB.
15. Set TX meter to read ALC.
16. Key the rig, talk normally, and adjust the mic gain (front of
console) for not more than 0dB on the TX meter.
17. Turn on DX and DEXP if you want.
18. Key the rig, talk normally, and verify ALC stays below 0dB.
19. Turn TX power back up and transmit.

Patrick,
I found that DDutil supports the Flex Knob even better than PowerSDR does. It
gives more control options, expecially some I wanted. In addition, since I
have a little VB script to start everything in order and delay starts by a few
seconds, DDutil brings up the Knob after PSDR is up and running.
I'm going to guess that you're having a problem with Windows trying to
re-assign COM ports on you. It does that, and I don't like it. If PSDR has
assigned the Knob to COM 5, and Windows decides to reassign something to COM 5,
then PSDR will not be happy at all. I forced the Knob COM assignment to where
I wanted it to go by opening Control Panel, Device Manager, Ports(COM &LPT),
and then choosing FlexControl USB Control Knob. From here, I went to the Port
Settings tab, and clicked Advanced. The Port Setting is at the bottom left of
Advanced. I used COM 7, which is over any other physical serial ports.

Re: [Flexradio] Audio question...

2012-06-06 Thread amsctalx
I'm am by no means an expert, but I recently went through the process of
addressing audio concerns on my 5K. You don't specify exactly what was bad
about your TX audio, but the three big symptoms seems to be "echos", distortion
and poor tonal balance.

"Echos" have a simple cause, once you understand the delays inherent in the
processing loop: RF into the mic input. The 5K seems to me to be a little more
sensitive in this regard than my other transmitters. I used the rear mic input,
and beefed up my already considerable RF precautions. The echo was eliminated.

Distortion could be from overdriving the input/excessive gain, or PSDR
processing parameters taken outside of their seemingly "ideal" ranges. It has
taken a lot of work to get my parameters right, but I eventually did.

Tonal balance is another tough nut to crack, as again PSDR doesn't seem to be
totally linear in this area. It took starting with the highest bands of the
PSDR EQ, getting each one "right", before moving down to the next lower band.

I guess if I needed to do something fast, and without my normal resources, I
would try to reduce or eliminate RF entering into the mic input, reducing the
PSDR processing and watch the ALC meter and the ALC Compression meter closely.

There does seem to be a lot of antipathy towards RM products from some
quarters, often a feature of posts from those using blanket appraisals: all
junk, that kind of thing. Like Bill I have both owned and used RM amplifiers
and have been disa0ointed by none of them. For many, too, an RM amp makes an
affordable entry into QRO. My most recent purchase was specifically as an
ad-on for the Flex 1500 I bought in the spring and no-one has mentioned
splatter or, indeed, any artefact you wouldn't consider when using any solid
state amp. And none of the issues associated with valve/tube amplifiers.
Prejudice - I think - prevents its perpetrators from discovering the truth,
good or bad.
But RM products are generally ok if you treat them right, don't overdrive them
and accept a little hype in the advertising when it comes to peak output, PEP
or whatever against, say, true RMS.
You don't get anything for nothing but it is worth considering all contenders,
even if they're European!

[Flexradio] Flex-5000 Antenna Tuner

2012-06-06 Thread Ed Wilson
Colleagues,

My Flex-5000 with the second receiver and antenna tuner has been working fine
for about two years under various versions of PowerSDR (currently at 2.3.5
under Windows 7/32). I started noticing problems with the tuner yesterday
(unable to find a match with an antenna that it had previously been able to
match at VSWR of 1.2:1). Today, I used it for a while on 15 meters with no
problems and then tried to change bands. It could not find a match, so I closed
down PowerSDR, shut the Flex-5000 off and removed power for about a minute just
to be sure. When the Flex-5000 was turned back on and after I started Power
SDR, the antenna tuner was no longer recognized (no buttons or  menu item and
it did not show-up in the setup menu). This unit is about three days past the
expiration of the warranty and I wonder if there are any suggestions before I
call Customer Support to see if it needs to be returned to Austin. Yes, I did
let it rebuilt a new database, but that
 did not help.

Thanks,

Ed, K0KC

Not ALL the amps made by RM Italy are CB type and non-filtered. They have a
few models made specifically for the ham bands - they include an ALC and PTT
line on the back, and switchable band filtering for all the ham bands from
160 - 10 meters.
I have the RM Italy BLA-350. It includes a built-in power supply, and will
put out a maximum power of 350 watts with about 25 watts of drive. If I use
it with my Flex 1500 @ 5 watts I get around 100 watts out.
All the filtering for every band is included, it is as clean as a whistle,
and it has plenty of safety features. Here is what it looks like

Re: [Flexradio] FlexControl install issues

2012-06-06 Thread Jim Jannuzzo

Patrick,I found that DDutil supports the Flex Knob even better than PowerSDR
does. It gives more control options, expecially some I wanted. In addition,
since I have a little VB script to start everything in order and delay starts
by a few seconds, DDutil brings up the Knob after PSDR is up and running. I'm
going to guess that you're having a problem with Windows trying to re-assign
COM ports on you. It does that, and I don't like it. If PSDR has assigned the
Knob to COM 5, and Windows decides to reassign something to COM 5, then PSDR
will not be happy at all. I forced the Knob COM assignment to where I wanted
it to go by opening Control Panel, Device Manager, Ports(COM &LPT), and then
choosing FlexControl USB Control Knob. From here, I went to the Port Settings
tab, and clicked Advanced. The Port Setting is at the bottom left of Advanced.
I used COM 7, which is over any other physical serial ports. Jim KJ2P

Re: [Flexradio] Amp for the 1500

2012-06-06 Thread Samuel Strongin
One of the main problem with these amps are the UNregulated bias supply .
The bias that sets the class of the amp will vary greatly when it is not
regulated . . Also the amps are highly overrated as far as power output. A
pig with lipstick is still a pig. These amps are junk and are not approved
for amateur use and could not pass requirements . Tokyo High Powers small
amp is fine , Look for an old Yeasu FL-110 it is a fine amp or wait for
Elecraft to relese their 100 watt amp .

Re: [Flexradio] FlexControl install issues

2012-06-06 Thread Patrick Greenlee
I now have the FlexControl installed (automatically as advertised in
instructions.) I shut down PSD and restarted it. It came up in "NORMAL"
mode vice the 9 bit noisy weird inop mode and the Flexcontrol installed
first try, no problems.

Apparently (well, at least it seems like there may be) a "race" condition, a
non deterministic situation in the software (or combined system) where
things can sometimes get off to a bad start. Most of the time my lashup of
radio, computer, and software starts up fine but a couple times it has had a
"bad" start and the display depicts a string of 9 bit words and the sound
they make does not soothe the savage breast.

There appears to be a certain random element in the startup. Once started
properly, ops normal continues ad infinitum (or at least hours) with no
apparent problems. If on the other hand there is a bad start (receiver
displays the above described "stuff" and makes rude noises) it will not
receive a normal signal, won't install FlexControl, and won't heal itself
(restart is needed.)

Finding the source of the problem could easily cost more in time and
resources than it is worth, especially considering the alternative is to
live with it and once in a while have to start the system up twice to get it
going properly. This software is not simple.

I just ran into the same thing. Try running the Flexcontrolinstall.bat

If you look in C:\Program Files
(X86)\FlexRadio\PowerSDRv2.1.x\FlexControlyy you will find more of the
path name mentioned in the FlexControl instructions but looking where told
doesn't work.

Rest of message should be pertinent.

My new Flex-Control has arrived and I tried to install it on my new Flex
5000 under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit.

I tried to follow the included instructions with blind obedience so as to
not wander off the straight and narrow but no joy, I got the message
predicted by the instruction sheet, "Installing New Driver." And then
while

expecting to see the message, "Flex Control driver is successfully
installed" and "The device is ready for use" I instead was told there was
an

error, the driver was not installed. I tried again but using the same USB
port did not trigger the attempt to install the driver. I plugged the Flex
Control into another USB port and got the same results as above, a swing
and

a miss, repeated for some other USB ports. No joy.

The instructions state that "If there is ever a need to manually tell
windows where to find the driver files, tell Windows that the drivers are
in:
C:\Program Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDRv2.1.x\FlexControlyy where x is
the dot release and yy is 32 or 64 (bits of OS)

The path name given does not exist within my PowerSDR installation. There
is a C:\Program Files\FlexRadio\"BlahBlahBlah" where there are 7 choices
for Blah etc.

PowerSDR installed OK or so it seemed as the radio worked and I copied
WWV,

some SSB and CW sigs. Now I get a strong series of apparent 9 bit digital
words (all ones) repeated over and over and over on all bands Loud and
obnoxious).

Any ideas? Is there a way to manually install the driver(s) for the
FlexControl under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit? Is there a simple way to
"reset" the USB ports (restore their virginity as regards FlexControl
insertion so the system will try again to install the drivers?

So far it is a cool looking
accessory with three lights, three buttons, and a knob but, of course, no
function.

Maybe. It does not tell you if the bandwidth is affected.
