Re: [Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Dave Mayfield
Dave, I am no expert but I would just try it and see what happens. If it
does not work then buy a cheep PC and have fun.

The PC I used on my Flex 3000 I paid $50.00 at a hamfest, it's a used
Dell Optiplex GX620 with two gigs rams, works perfect. In fact every PC
I own I bought used at hamfests paying no more than $75.00 been doing
this for years. It's not a matter of money, I can buy anything I want,
it's just a matter of if a $50.00 PC works great why spend 2K

I know two guys around two here that custom built PC just for their Flex
radios and spent a ton of money, and the bottom line my $50.00 used PC
does the same thing..

Re: [Flexradio] FaceBook just say NO!

2012-02-26 Thread Dave Mayfield W9WRL

Nothing dangerous about Facebook.

What is dangerous is when people are stupid enough to join something
like Facebook and then enter all their correct personal information,
Facebook is very useful and a great way to keep in touch with friends
and family. In fact I've connected with many family members I had
forgotten about and some I never knew.

Like, I said. People are stupid to enter real personal info into these
sites, just modify your info, create an e-mail address from gmail or
hotmail to use on sites like FB, and the dangerous part of FB now does
not matter.

Lets talk about radio. I love my Flex 3000.

I have tried cheater plugs with no luck. I have ferrites on everything. I
have chokes on my antenna line, both directly outside my shack and at the
33' vertical antenna base. If I lay my mic / headset on my desk, the spikes
go away. As soon as I touch the headsets, the spikes come back. I use a Heil
foot switch for PTT. I even tried audio transformers on both the headset
audio and mic inputs. It seems I am in the ground loop..

Original Post

I have been trying to integrate a Behringer DEQ2496 into my audio chain
with my Flex 5000A. My shack is on the second floor of my house so RFI is a
constant problem. Using only my Behringer Xenyx802 mixer board and my 5000A
there are no major RFI problems. I have isolated the 802 from the ballanced
line input on the 5000A with a Jensen JT-11P-1 audio transformer. When I add
the DEQ2496 I get an RFI spike at about 2~3 Hz. I can see the spike on both
the 5000A panadapter and on an oscilloscope tapped at my 811H amp output. I
have tried various audio isolation techniques but no joy. The spiking is the
most pronounced with the amp on. Has anyone encountered this issue and
solved this problem ? if so please advise.

Re: [Flexradio] Damage control - designed for AM ?

2012-02-25 Thread Dave Mayfield W9WRL
I have a friend of mine W9AD, he has a 5000A, operates it remote from
Mexico most of the time, and sounds like $1,000,000 on AM. Work him
every Saturday on 3.885 and no one has a better signal. Other than
myself of course.

Hearsay being what it is I don't know what was actually said, but I
certainly hope it wasn't stated quite that way. The 5K works very well
on AM; much better than any of the Japanese rigs, at least. Perhaps an
expanded section in the manual would help - I've helped several AM'ers
with the concept of 1:4 carrier vs modulated output. Once they got
it and paused long enough to learn about the TX audio controls, they
were fine.

Re: [Flexradio] Misinformation about k3 being srd

Ray, K9DUR wrote:

Actually, the ability to function without a computer is not the real
definition of SDR. At least not in the sense of a stand-alone computer.
The military has software-defined radios that are self-contained. The

The actual definition of SDR is just what it says. All functions, operating
characteristics, and signal processing are defined by software not by the
hardware platform. The software may be running on a stand-alone computer,
as in the case of the Flex radios, or it may be stored in firmware with the
CPU embedded in the hardware package itself. Both approaches are truly
software-defined radios.

I like to refer to radios like the K3 as semi-SDR. Yes, many of the
operating characteristics can be changed by changing the firmware, but a
significant part of the signal processing is still performed in hardware.

From a theoretical viewpoint, the Flex radios are not totally
software-defined either. Some of the signal processing is still done in
hardware. (Down-conversion to the audio IF, TX RX filtering at RF
frequencies, etc.)

A truly 100% SDR is not possible with today's technology, but FlexRadio
Systems has taken SDR closer to the theoretical ideal than anyone else.

[Flexradio] TX Power

2011-09-18 Thread Dave Mayfield W9WRL
Guys, I got my 3000 at Dayton this year and am just now starting to
really dig into it. First thing I noticed is that the drive seems low. I
connected the 3000 to my AL-811h amp, and right away I notice much lower
output from the amp Vs using it with my 756 Pro II. That was right after
Dayton. Today I had some time and connected the 3000 to a good pep watt
meter and dummy load.

Checked all bands for output using SSB, AM and FM. The am fm readings
were all about the same on all bands. 35 to 40 watts depending on band
and mode. But on SSB I'm getting 45 to 70 watts pep depending on the
band. This seems low to me. I looked under setup and click the PA
settings tab, it is blank? manual shows I should be able to make
adjustments.

Any Ideas?

Thanks for your time and input.

2011-03-13 Thread Dave Mayfield W9WRL
Having just purchased a 1500, I am starting to agree with you Ron. my
756 pro II has a scope, but it's not near what the Flex is. Once you get
use to using a mouse and a few key's the Flex is really easy to use.
Most guys talk about not like a SDR because they miss knobs, but I must
say I got over that in about 5 mins of using the Flex. Not sure if I
will spend the bigger dollars for a 5000 or 3000, the 1500 does a lot,
and I connected to my AL-811H amp, now getting 100watts more or less
depending on the band, makes the 1500 really useful. Life is to short
for QRP.
