I would like $50 for the board, which has all of the SO-239 and BNC

_Part 6_ of message #32:

6. Software updates - Not too fond of this but I can understand it I
guess. BUT I am concerned that I may have to pay for updates to get
basic advertised functions that are not implemented yet at the time of
initial shipping...such as remote over the internet (not just the
LAN). IMO any subscription for updates should commence AFTER all the
functionality is implemented and working correctlyTHEN you can
pay for new features and updates.

We agree with this in principal. This is one reason why those that sign up
for the limited edition will receive two years of software updates included
instead of just one.

I had seen the ADDED ONE YEAR OF SOFTWARE SUPPORT, and declined with my
order. $200 is a bit of a new game for what used to be free! -But this
is very possibly an unavoidable issue. So be it.

My point: It looks as if one would get two years of software as a part
of the pre-order plan's offer. (So it says above, per Steve.) I had
missed this entirely! -And so the OPTIONAL one more year would bring
this to three years total???

Maybe I should do this..? (What would the added one year cost me, if
purchased at a later time, like beyond what is included?)

Re: [Flexradio] Here it goes

2012-05-18 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Hi, Robert;

Aside from upgrading one's BIOS, etc., DO CONSIDER turning off your
anti-malware application(s), if you have any. I had fought this same
"once in a while" issue of the audio either stopping altogether, or
going "fuzzy" on me. I'd stop, the restart the radio, using the START
button, and all would be fine again.

A friend of mine had this same issue, and he just happened to note that
the anti-virus app was doing an update of the "cootie list" database in
his computer! -At this time, his PowerSDR's audio went bad. (Start,
stop resolved the issue.) We discussed this, and decided to uninstall
our malware apps. NO MORE troubles for both is us.

In my case, it rarely had a problem, but it NEVER would operate
overnight. -Left ON, the audio would always be bad in the morning.
Now, I can leave my computer and Flex running 24 hours a day; The
longest I had let the system run was six weeks. The restart was to
install or upgrade an app, as an example; PowerSDR was running perfectly.

Your computer's problem may well be a different cause; -Just be aware of
the applications that are "trying to help you," and wind up getting the
data "out of sync." If not the malware apps, it could possibly be some
other routine that is running in your computer. (Right-click your TASK
BAR to see what is running...)

running. I have run dpc latency tests on the radio and have not had any dpc
latency of more than 200 microseconds. Now that I have power sdr running, I get
some spikes of over 7000us. When this happens, the audio stops and I have to
hit start and stop and then the audio will come back for a minute or two and
then it will happen again. My luck that I would finally get my 5000a up and
running during Dayton and a major Flex rollout.

Re: [Flexradio] Can you explain this twin killing

2011-12-05 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Yes, I see this link. But the VIMEO video has "limited availability" to
the general population. It would be better if a correction or update be
offered in the same format as it was originally presented; In this case,
YOUTUBE.

Also, the VIMEO video does not appear to be a retraction in any way.
(You had somewhat alluded to that, in your previous comment on the
matter, or at least, this is what I had assumed.)

The damage is done by allowing this video to exist as-is. In the
YouTube presentation, it is a stand-alone entry or item that does not
offer the resolution, nor the fact that you had possibly made a small error.

I have a couple of the Flex-5000 units and also a 1500. I have had
three other Flex units. I do not recall this as ever being a problem
with the Flex radios. On the other hand, I ABSOLUTELY HAVE had an
on-going share of mirror images and the like with Softrock and other SDR
units. This can be a very hard issue to resolve, but not impossible.
In all cases, it was my operator-error.

In all of my many cases, the resolution or CAUSE dealt with the SOUND
CARD or the SOUND CARD SELECTION and related in PowerSDR, in the
SETTINGS menus.

I hope that this and other hints will help you to resolve the mirror
image issue; -In the meantime, PLEASE do consider modifying or deleting
the original video.

Re: [Flexradio] PA Calibration

2011-09-27 Thread Mike Schwendeman
When I had my SDR-1000, it was an easy task to do a touch-up
(re-calibration) of the RF outputs for each band. With later models of
Flex Radios, it APPEARS that it is a bit more controlled, or
STANDARDIZED. (The standardization refers to the need of a particular
piece of equipment, a particular make and model of RF power meter, and
also requires that the computer have a serial port.)

It would really be nice to sneak in, and do a power-output touch-up,
though. If one has a known good RF power meter and dummy load, I'd hope
that a small touch-up could be made.

Per the notes that I have on hand, my gathered (but UN-BLESSED OR
ENDORSED!) information is as follows, to get to the "PA/ATU Tests:"

- Reset the PowerSDR database before the test is run.
- Set the SAMPLE RATE to 96K.
- Set the AUDIO/FW BUFFER to 1024 or 2048.
- Press CONTROL-SHIFT-F to bring up the test routine.
- Power amplifier: Run ONLY the BIAS and POWER test-calibrate functions!
- If the BIAS is run, allow POWER to recalibrate for all concerned bands.

Please note that this is my collected notes ONLY!!! I don't know if any
of this stuff works!

This _*is not*_ an endorsed PROCEDURE that is to be run by a Flex Radio
owner!

I am presenting this information as a "starting point" to allow us to
collectively come upon a means to make a small adjustment to our radios.

In other words, DO NOT USE THIS PROCEDURE UNLESS IT IS BLESSED BY
SOMEONE THAT REALLY KNOWS IF IT IS EVEN A SAFE THING TO CONSIDER! But,
if anyone has a suggested expansion or advice to never attempt this, I

[Flexradio] Flex-WIKI; What is "copyrighted information?"

2011-07-10 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Good day;

I have just made a small contribution to the Flexradiowiki; See the link
below:

www.flexradiowiki.com/frsradoiowiki/index.php?title=Remote_access_to_your_Flex_Radio

I am wondering how one defines what is COPYRIGHTED. As an example, is
one permitted to include links to a related ham radio (Flex-Radio) web site?

If the full web link is NOT permitted, is it OK to submit the link
without the "http://"; prefix, as an example?

How does Flex Radio feel about being linked to the WIKI?

Thank you; 73,

Mike

Re: [Flexradio] Question regarding VAC on remote PC...

2011-07-09 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Carsten;

I use SKYPE as the means of coupling the needed audio to the Flex Radio.

You already have VAC 4.09 installed, or ready. (GOOD!)

Install VAC, then ENABLE VAC in the SETUP -> AUDIO -> VAC menu of PowerSDR;
Set the driver to Windows WDM-KS
Set the INPUT to Virtual Cable 1
Set the OUTPUT to Virtual Cable 2
Check the ENABLE VAC box

Install Skype on the computer that is running your Flex-Radio
Create a NEW identity for the "radio access" ("Carsten-Flex" as an
example?)
Set Skype to auto-answer, but ONLY TO THE IDENTITIES ON IT'S CONTACT
LIST. (!!)

In Skype, select TOOLS -> OPTIONS -AUDIO SETUP
Once there, select Virtual cable 2 as the microphone selection
Select Virtual cable 1 as the speaker selection

From your remote computer, "call" the new Skype identity that you have
in place for the Flex-Radio. It should auto-answer and connect! (We
hope..) If not, look at the logic of what is needed: You need to call
the Flex's computer's Skype identity, but it has to be automatic, as you
are not there to ANSWER. Once you have the connection, you can play
with the settings. (I have a Skype transmit audio profile in PowerSDR,
as I need to have the HIGHS boosted when I use Skype.)

You will have to play with the audio levels in BOTH the PowerSDR's VAC
levels as well as the level settings in Skype; I have to boost my TX
audio in PowerSDR's VAC...

I hope this helps you; I believe there is more information in the
FLEX-WIKI as well as the Flex KC.

Hi,

I am remote controlling some Flexes through a VPN connection. For

What must be done to have audio also on the controlling site when using

Re: [Flexradio] Firewire loss of communications

2011-06-23 Thread Mike Schwendeman
I was preparing my reply to Mike (see below), and was going over this
saga with another friend; It turns out that I was close, but had MISSED
the exact combination! It turns out that I had TWO BLOWN FIREWIRE
PORTS! One on the back of the HP computer, and the "alternate" firewire
port on my Flex-5000a. (We had also upgraded the Firewire port DRIVERS
on the HP Pavilion computer, after which time, we saw TWO firewire ports
in the DEVICE MANAGER!)

Well, after all this, I went through the whole mess of demonstrating to
Bob how I could use different Firewire cables, different ports on both
the computer and the Flex-5000a... And the radio became recognizable
again. So, maybe the driver upgrade was the issue, maybe not...

The bottom line is that the Flex-5000a is now operational again. Two
points:

1. I will be buying a Firewire PCI card; -WHICH?
2. What folly it was that Flex had added TWO of the Firewire ports!
(Yeah, but it sure came in handy this time!!

-Mike-

- My previously assembled email to Mike follows

Hello, Mike;

I had done this, as you will see below. (The change of computer, to see
if the radio responds.) -Although, this was by my using an iMac that
is also running Windows XP-SP3. The Flex-5000a ran just fine.

Here are a few words from my FIRST entry on this matter:

- Using a Firewire 400->800 (low cost!) cable, I booted an
iMac in BOOT CAMP, running XP-SP3 and PowerSDR 2.0.22:
Flex-5000a runs OK!!!
(So, THE RADIO IS OK!)

- I hooked up an external firewire hard drive to the HP Pavilion: -Works
OK!!

(So, the Firewire ports are OK on the HP Pavilion computer)
(I have a bad (Flex-related) driver, all of a sudden!)

[Flexradio] Firewire loss of communications

2011-06-21 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Good day;

I was away for a few days, and turned my HP Pavilion (Windows XP SP-3)
OFF before I left. When I returned, I booted the computer, and started
the Flex-5000a radio, using PowerSDR 2.0.22 or 2.1 RC1. (The DC supply
was off, also...) -Nobody home, it seemed! I have tried the following:

- I did a complete shutdown of the computer
- I shut off the Flex-5000a
- I shut the DC power supply off

- Restarted the HP Pavilion (XP-SP3) , power supply, Flex-5000a
- Ran the FLEXRADIO application; "No devices found"

- Tried a second Firewire port on the radio; No help
- Tried a second Firewire cable to the radio; No help

- Using a Firewire 400->800 (low cost!) cable, I booted an
iMac in BOOT CAMP, running XP-SP3 and PowerSDR 2.0.22:
  Flex-5000a runs OK!!!
  (So, THE RADIO IS OK!)

- I hooked up an external firewire hard drive to the HP Pavilion: -Works
OK!!

(So, the Firewire ports are OK on the HP Pavilion computer)
(I have a bad (Flex-related) driver, all of a sudden!)

- Uninstalled PowerSDR 1.16, 2.1 RC1
- Restarted HP Pavilion
- Downloaded, installed PowerSDR 2.1 RC3
- Started PowerSDR 2.1 RC3
- FFT's up, down as usual; EPROM (something..!) loaded, saved...
- Ran FLEXRADIO; -Indicates "No devices found"

It seems that I have lost the driver for Firewire, but I do not know
which, or how...

I tried to "Update driver..." in DEVICE MANAGER for:
Flex Radio USB Driver (In FLEX RADIO)
1394 Net adapters (In NETWORK ADAPTERS)
Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection (In NETWORK ADAPTERS)
(All attempts to automatically locate/update FAILED)

What have I failed to do? (How do I fix this??)
Do I need a better Firewire card?
(I am using the motherboard's on-board ports; -Worked OK for YEARS!)

Subject: Re: [Flexradio] 2.0.20 RC2 - Release transmit Audio Problems

Hi Gwyn,

We made a major improvement to ALC to eliminate overshoot in RC2. Here
is the text of the email I sent to the reflectors a couple weeks ago.

fromGerald Youngblood
date Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 12:54 PMsubject Transmitter level
setting change

We made two important changes to the transmitter audio chain in RC2 to
eliminate ALC overshoot. We moved the transmitter DSP filter ahead of
ALC and

we adjusted the target gain to 0dB throughout the chain. This will
necessitate different audio setting from those you may have been using on
previous versions.

With the new release, DX and Compander settings will increase the peak
levels seen at the ALC input. You should check your microphone gain
setting based on the ALC meter when making any change to the audio
settings such as DC/CPDR or the Equalizer. After turning on any
desired audio processing functions, you should set the microphone gain
so that ALC peaks just under 0 dB.

I am trying to understand a "correct procedure" of setting the various
audio levels, per the above. I am not at all sure of what might be
considered the "Best way" to set things up, so I will offer what I have
interpreted as follows, complete with my missing info and with some
steps that may NOT be needed or suggested:

1. Select the desired PowerSDR ENHANCEMENT mode (CPDR or DX or DEFAULT,
or none)

2. Set the selected enhancement (DX or CPDR) level to (_)
a. Adjust DX or CPDR settings while watching ()
3. Select the ALC display in the PowerSDR's TRANSMIT metering
4. Adjust the MIC GAIN to NOT exceed 0 dB on voice peaks
5. Select (show) the transmit equalizer, and turn it ON
6. Adjust the transmit equalizer GAIN to (_)

How does one "set" the DX and CPDR levels? (What might one look at, or
watch for when adjusting these levels?

I am used to MAINLY watching the MIC level when transmitting, trying to
be close to, but not exceeding 0 dBm. The ALC indication seems to be
pretty much right there, at 0 dB, with some either higher or lower
amplitude voice inputs. (As seen in the MIC metering.) Has the MIC
level indication lost importance to the point that the ALC is the only
item I should be fully aware of, and watching?

In the pre-RC2 versions of PowerSDR, there was a reason or function that
involved the transmit equalizer's GAIN. Is this still valid? (If so
where in the above steps might this be correctly applied?)

Is there a block diagram that shows this new audio chain?

Thank you -Mike- K0JTA

This is to provide maximum power output without inducing distortion
from ALC compression. ALC is primarily intended to limit the maximum
output power but is not intended to be used as a compressor.
Compression is the

role of the Compander (CPDR & DX modes).

Gerald

No matter how one does the installation, an access hole would have to be

Re: [Flexradio] band control interface box for PowerSDR

2010-10-27 Thread Mike Schwendeman
I would like to offer what -had- been presented on one or both of the
Flex reflectors some time back; It had to do with a USB-controlled
RELAY BOARD.

I have one of these boards, and I wish I had ordered two. (I think I
will be placing an order for a second one soon...) Basically, this is
an easy to use, straight forward board that has EIGHT SPDT relays. It
is controlled by a standard USB port. The software is easy to use, as
you will see when you go to eBay.com, and search for "170433636784"
-This will yield the item labeled "USB Relay Timer with FT245 - Eight
Channels - 12 V."

I use this board to control the antenna-switching relay, so I can feel
more secure leaving my Flex-radio ON, and available for remote access.
When I connect to my computer that is running the Flex radio, I simply
use the free application, and switch one of the eight relays on the USB
board to ground the antenna, or connect it to the radio.

I am using LogMeIn (the free version of this application) to connect to,
then view and control the computer that is running PowerSDR. -It's
EXACTLY like being right at the computer that is running PowerSDR and
the Flex radio!

This board will cost a total of US$56, including the shipping. -Lots
cheaper than the Elecraft KRC2 device! (Plus, I believe that the
Elecraft unit is an un-assembled kit, and one also has to run a
relatively complicated-to-run program to get it to interface where it is
needed. Then, one has to add a relay of some sort, if the desired need
is to control a relay, as I am doing!)

The Elecraft device is able to do more than just control a relay, so if
your needs are greater than my simply use, maybe the USB relay board is
not the best choice. For my limited need, I have found that the USB
relay board fits my needs well. The unit is very well built, in my
opinion. One can see the full information on this and other related
devices at denkovi.com.

Re: [Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback

2010-10-15 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Graham; I'll add my comments to your email below...

On 10/15/10 7:56 AM [Oct 15], Graham Haddock wrote:

is no longer SSB, but a sort of DSB. My CW note (in TUNE mode) is
no linger a single tone. (See my original email for a more
complete coverage of the details.)

Why is it that my transmitted SSB signal is getting messy, with
me emitting what seems like a DSB signal, when I change the
PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size > Phone from 2048 to 512 or
256??? -Keep in mind that this is on two computers, running a

   73; -Mike- KØJTA

Mike:

As a simple explanation, the smaller the buffers are, then the faster
(attention is required more often)
the computer must be to circle back to the buffer and re-fill it.
Depending on the computer, there may be a
large overhead in the CPU switching from one task to another. If the
buffers are set too small,
then the data going into the buffers gets corrupted, because the
computer can not get back
in time, and is missing part of the re-fill. Missing data in an I-Q
system destroys image cancellation

and opposite sideband suppression, etc.

This sure seems to answer the cause-and-effect that I was seeing,
when I dropped the DSP TX buffer to a too-low value!

It is not just about computer clock speed, it is also about the size
of the caches, and the

efficiency at which the computer can do context or thread switching.

I have had a recent learning experience that a Pentium D, for example,
although multi-core and

a fast processor speed, particularly sucks at thread switching.

If setting the buffers at a particular small size causes problems,
then you are being told something

about your computer system, and you should not set the buffers that small.

Yes, to be sure! -I now know the dangers of setting a buffer too
low, as I had been advised of my degraded on-air SSB signal that was
developing into more and more into a DSB-like emission, as I decreased
the TX buffer!

I still am able to reliably demonstrate my method of "getting rid
of" the three second audio delay in BOTH of my radio setups (Two
different Flex radios, two different computers, two different antennas,
etc.) as I had described; -A change of my Flex-5000a's PowerSDR > DSP
> Options > Buffer size > Phone from my default 2048 (default is 1024
in Flex-3000) value IN POWERSDR, which is then returned to the original
of 2048 (1024 in the '3000) setting to make the long audio delay go away
is an absolute!

If you look at my reply to Dudley for more words on the matter,
maybe it all boils down to how I have my VAC application set up! (-Yet,
I am changing PSDR, not VAC to give me a temporary resolution...)

 Very 73! -Mike- KØJTA

Re: [Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback

2010-10-15 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Hi again, Dudley; I'll add my comments to your email below...

On 10/14/10 11:29 PM [Oct 14], FlexRadio Support, Dudley Hurry wrote:

Mike,

Good reference for the cause and effect of the DSP filters is Appendix
A in the current manual. You must be careful of the lower DSP

I have re-read this info. (Thank you for the reminder!) I am
seeing a more dramatic effect for the CW mode, but I am sure that SSB
has some obvious interactive effects. -Such as I had reported that my
SSB would turn more and more into a DSB mode as I decreased the SSB TX
buffer.

If the delay is in Skype, work with matching the Skype sample rate to
the PowerSDR sample in the VAC window..
I am feeling that there is some delay in Skype. This is very hard
to NOT have, and this is acceptable. But in my case, the audio was
delayed a LOT MORE than the common (under half-second) Skype-induced
delay. I was seeing three seconds, sometimes more on both radio
stations. (Recap: One station = Flex-3000/Mac Mini, second station =
Flex-5000a/2 Ghz HP Pavilion, BOTH running XP-SP3.)

This seems to really helps some of the digital modes, so that there
is less work in the buffer transitions..

OK for the digital modes; -Point taken. (Recap: I am using SSB mode.)

Funny things can happen when sample rates don't match, somewhere a
program has to make the transition of sample rates.. Sample rates,
Sample rates.. Not just the buffers, although they may have an effect
also..

I see you stressing the SAMPLE RATES. Well, you are trying to
convey good info to a dummy, here. (I are confused.) I can only report
to you that the sample rates that are now set in place are as follows:

   Flex-3000 setup:
PowerSDR > Audio > Primary > Buffer Size = 1024
PowerSDR > Audio > Primary > Sample Rate = 96000
PowerSDR > Audio > VAC > Buffer Size = 512
PowerSDR > Audio > VAC > Sample Rate = 48000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable Parameters > SR Range = 22050 to 48000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable Parameters > BPS = 8 to 32
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 1 and 2 SR = 48000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 1 BPS = 16
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 2 BPS = 16
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Stream Format = Cable Format

   Flex-5000 setup:
PowerSDR > Audio > Primary > Buffer Size = 1024
PowerSDR > Audio > Primary > Sample Rate = 192000
PowerSDR > Audio > VAC > Buffer Size = 1024
PowerSDR > Audio > VAC > Sample Rate = 48000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable Parameters > SR Range = 11025 to 96000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 1 and 2 SR = 48000
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 1 BPS = 16
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 2 BPS = 32
VAC ver 4.0.9 > Stream Format = Cable Format

These stations were set up with not a lot of logic, as I now see;
The Flex-5000a's VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 2 BPS value of 32 looks
suspicious, as just one example! -Also, the VAC ver 4.0.9 > Cable 1 and
2 SR of 48000 is related to your comment of SAMPLE RATES above. (Note:
The Flex-3000 setting of 16 BPS looks a bit smoother, but this radio has
the same three second audio delay/lag UNTIL I CHANGE, THEN RESET the
PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size > Phone from the default, then
back to the original setting!)

I am not sure why changing the DSP buffer and then back to default
would affect the Skype transfer, but I am sure that is something
being resync'd.

Yes, this sure seems to be a very distinct possibility! -A change
of my Flex-55000a's PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size > Phone from
my default 2048 (default is 1024 in Flex-3000) value IN POWERSDR, which
is then returned to the original of 2048 (1024 in the '3000) setting to
make the long audio delay go away is a puzzle! Maybe it all boils down
to how I have my VAC application set up! (-Yet, I am changing PSDR, not
VAC to give me a temporary resolution...)

Thank you for your time, Dudley! -Mike- KØJTA

Re: [Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback

2010-10-14 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Hi, Dudley; I'll add my comments to your email below:

On 10/14/10 4:03 PM [Oct 14], FlexRadio Support, Dudley Hurry wrote:

Mike,

I am not sure that the DSP buffers are what you real issue with Skype
is, check you VAC buffering,

While I respect your suggestion, all I can say is that I have a
"cause and effect" which sure seems to at least CHANGE the audio delay.
(I had changed PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size > Phone from 2048
to 512, as an example.) I do not recall seeing any change, when I tried
different values for the VAC buffer size. (-Maybe I missed something?)

in PowerSDR, VAC and in Windows Sounds. Win7 seems to love to reset
the Virtual Audio lines 1 and 2 to 44K for sample rather than the 48K
that we have VAC buffering set for in the VAC tab.

I have checked, and VAC is behaving; I see that the "SR" is set to
4800. I will add that I am running Windows XP-SP3, not Windows 7.

Also you might just try to lower the VAC buffering to better match the
Skype buffer (not sure where in Skype to find this, so you may need
to play with the settings) instead of 48K try a lower rate, 22050..
The buffer transitioning may be more the issue. Let us all know the
results.

In looking for any "Skype buffer" settings, I had no luck; I even
searched for this in the Skype application.

Again, as a recap: I am predictably able to decrease my audio
delay-time by changing the "PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size >
Phone" from the default to some lower value. -But, if i leave the
setting at a 512 or 256 as an example, my transmitted signal is no
longer SSB, but a sort of DSB. My CW note (in TUNE mode) is no linger a
single tone. (See my original email for a more complete coverage of the
details.)

Why is it that my transmitted SSB signal is getting messy, with me
emitting what seems like a DSB signal, when I change the PowerSDR > DSP
> Options > Buffer size > Phone from 2048 to 512 or 256??? -Keep in
mind that this is on two computers, running a Flex-3000 and a Flex-5000a.

[Flexradio] Skype AUDIO DELAY and PowerSDR DSP / Buffer Size drawback

2010-10-14 Thread Mike Schwendeman

 Good day;

I have a Flex-3000 running on a Mac Mini and also have a Flex-5000a
running on an HP Pavilion. I have Windows XP-SP3 installed on both
computers, and both computers are running PowerSDR 2.0.8.

My desire is to operate the radios REMOTELY. I accomplish this by
running the free version of LogMeIn, which allows me to connect and
see/control the respective remote-accessible computer-radios described
above. For the AUDIO PATH, I use Skype, which is set up as
auto-answer. I have VAC 4.0.9 set up, which couples the Skype audio to
and from PowerSDR.

All of this works very reliable. But, I have been experiencing a
noticeable "time lag" as I transmit (via Skype) to the remote
radio/PowerSDR! This time lag is in the range of two to three SECONDS.
The end result is that as I use the radio remotely, I must watch my
transmitted audio in PowerSDR, making sure that I do not un-key before
all of my audio stream has made it through the transmitter. (If I
simply unkey when I am done talking, I CLIP the tail end of my
transmission.)

I had read of the reasons for experimenting with the BUFFER SIZE in
PowerSDR > DSP > Options > Buffer size > Phone; In my experimenting, I
had the discovery (impression) that the audio did not seem to have the
DELAY any more!

My default setting for the PHONE BUFFER SIZE was 2048 for both radios; I
dropped this to 512, then 128. My Skype audio delay was almost
completely gone! I ran it this way for a couple days; -But I soon was
advised that I had something that was wrong with my transmitted signal.
-It was like I was operating in DSB mode, not LSB on 75 meters!
Resetting the phone buffer size to 2048 (to 1024 in the case of the
Flex-3000/Mac Mini) resolved the issue.

When I had the transmit buffer size set to a lower value, I had noticed
that my panadapter display of my SSB transmitted signal was a bit wider
than usual but thought nothing of this, thinking that the different
buffer size was simply changing the FILTER SHAPE.

I also noticed that when I would go to TUNE mode or use the two radio's
built in auto-tuner, I was seeing TWO "SPIKES" of RF in those (CW)
modes, not the ONE that I had seen in the past. In my on-air
troubleshooting, I noticed that the secondary "spike" would change size
(decrease) as I increased the transmit buffer number.

So, the DRAWBACK is that my SSB transmitted signal would degrade if I
had the transmit buffer set to a lower value.

NEW TWIST:
As I operated the radio in remote mode, I again suffered the long time
lag, as I waited for my audio to be transmitted, before I could un-key
the radio in LogMeIn. However, I am now noticing that when I begin a
new remote-radio session, I could decrease the "long time lag" by simply
setting the transmit buffer to 512 (as an example) then return it to the
more normal longer setting! The time lag had gone away for that session.

QUESTION:
What have I stumbled into? I seem to have the ability to decrease the
Skype-audio-delay for that one remote session, but I am sure that there
is the "right way," as compared to my way. (Is there a more correct way
to resolve the remote audio delay?)

Last bits of information: I have my PowerSDR >Audio > Primary > Buffer
Size set to 1024, sample rate at 9600 on the Flex-3000. I have my
PowerSDR >Audio > VAC >Buffer size set to 512. Changing either of these
buffer sizes does not seem to make much difference.

Sorry this is such a long item, but I wanted to be reasonably complete.
73; -Mike- KØJTA

[Flexradio] Complete Flex-1500 PACKAGE for sale!

2010-09-16 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Note: My "formatting" was a mess, so I am re-submitting as follows...

I have too many great radios: The Flex-1500, Flex-3000 and the
Flex-5000a. Due to my "exposure" to the likes of the Flex-5000,
I am feeling "spoiled." As a result, I am going to sell my
recently received Flex-1500 radio, with some related items!

What I am considering is a PACKAGE of the Flex-1500 radio as follows:

Flex-1500 radio Flex = $649 plus $22 S/H = $671 = $570.00
Yaesu HM-31 mic (GigaParts $36, plus $8 shipping = $44)= $37.50
(OPTION on all of the Flex-Radios; Even the MIC CABLE is an option!)
(HM-5 mic = $137, plus $39.99 for mic cable)
LDG Z-11 Pro auto antenna tuner
   (Cheapham = $163, plus $12.95 shipping) = $176 = $139.00
Griffin tuning knob (NextDay PC = $45, with shipping) = $45 = $38.25
Mac Mini, which is now running my Flex-3000.
   (eBay = $455, plus $15 shipping = $470) = $400.00
I have upgraded the memory to 4 Gb a couple months ago. The
computer is running both Mac and Windows operating systems; Mac
OS-X version 10.6.4 and Windows XP, SP-3. (The Mac Mini also has
by default, the setup to run the Flex-1500, as I CHOSE THIS setup
when I installed the latest version of PowerSDR.)
Apple wireless mouse (eBay = $42, plus $8 S/H = $50.00) = $42.50
Macally iKey full keyboard
   (eBay = $13.5, + 18 S/H = $31.50) = $26.75
Dell 18.5 inch LCD display 2 months old!
   (Best = $145.00, w/shipping) = $85.00

FAIR "Going prices" total = $1632.50 MY Total = $1339.00

In other words, it would be pretty much a turn-key setup!
Interested If so, I can work up a price on the parts that you'd
like; -But I'd much prefer selling all to one party. The LDG tuner is
able to tune with just a watt or a tenth watt of RF, by the way.

The more I use the Flex-1500, the more I am growing to appreciate
the elegance of this extremely small package!!! I was on 20 and 17
meters on Sunday, and worked all I could hear. (Even a mobile in
California; We had a long chat, so it was pretty darn good.)

2010-07-09 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Sorry to see that my attempts have resulted in TWO of my 15-PLUS
attempts to post.
The trouble seems to stem from the fact that I was allowing HTML to
appear, even though it did not appear on MY END, as I viewed my sent-emails.

I finally resolved the issue by copying the email to a word processor,
then forcing a SAVE as a TEXT FILE. Not seeing the first text-file
attempt, I trimmed even MORE off. I was finally able to see the post(s)
by viewing the month's list by a different sort. (Previous to this,
even a FORCE RELOAD of the first sorted page was not allowing my stuff

At any rate, sorry for the duplication. The good part is that you did
not have to suffer the other fifteen or so...

Actually, I have a Flex-3000. But, the draw of the '1500 is that
it is SMALL and HAS A USB INTERFACE. The USB interface allows a lot
wider range of mini-computers to use to run the needed PowerSDR
application. Granted, the "pile" of equipment is more extensive, as one
would need the 1500, an ATU, and possibly an RF power amp. It is very
possible that all of the components in this so-called PILE might be a
bit lighter than the 3000 unit, I don't know.
Bottom line: your point is very VALID! Also, the 3000 would allow
a wider span in the panoramic display, as well as offer a somewhat
BETTER receiver! (So, "Hmmm...)

[Flexradio] RF Amplifier possibilities for the soon-to-be-released Flex-1500?

2010-06-03 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Quite possibly like several of you, I have a Flex-1500 on order; -As this is
a five-Watt radio, I have been looking at the possibilities of boosting the
power level, when I am at a camp site. So far, I see two possible sources,
a $400 store-bought one, or either of the two low cost, but KIT-FORM units.

What I'd REALLY LIKE TO SEE is an amplifier from FLEX-RADIO (Maybe
a Flex-1550?)

I can almost envision it... 75 to 100 Watts, optional built in antenna
tuner... (Wow.)

In my case, I want to make up a small "camping radio" to replace my
IC-7000,

which is now installed in our small camper. The Flex-1500, the 100-Watt amp
from HF Projects, and my little LDG auto-antenna tuner would do A LOT
BETTER

than my present IC-7000, with the AH-4 auto-antenna tuner. For one thing,
the IC-7000 suffers from a well known input DC voltage issue; In my case,
I get about 65 Watts output from fresh batteries, which drops to about
50 Watts,
as the days go on. Also, the standby/receive current draw of the IC-7000
is a
LOT higher than the Flex-1500. (In receive, the IC-7000 takes about two
or so

Amperes, as I recall.) In transmit mode, the Flex-1500's current draw would
possibly be higher than what the voltage-deprived, current-sucking
IC-7000, but

this would ONLY be when I actually transmitted. As such, I could afford to
LISTEN a lot more, with the Flex-1500/amp/tuner package!

The ($400 list) Tokyo High Power amplifier is only a 45 Watt (MAXIMUM) unit,
where the HF PROJECTS has two models, a 50-60 Watt (I think) one and a
100 Watt
(More than 100 Watts, per the video I saw!) model. To me, $400 is a bit
high for only 45 Watts,

so a kit is more attractive to me.

Both of the HF Projects units represent a distinct advantage in many ways,
to my thinking; -Of all of the available units, the one that really has me
excited is the HF SuperPacker Pro 100W Amplifier! Here's a link to a VIDEO,
nicely demonstrating the HF PROJECTS HF SuperPacker Pro 100W Amp:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAgAvgVzrOo This amp will produce 100 Watts
(or MORE?), with about 5 Watts input. This fits the soon-to-be-released
Flex-1500 extremely well!

The HF PROJECTS HF SuperPacker Pro 100W Amp information is here:
site.hfprojectsyahoo.com/hf_superpacker_pro

The smaller amplifier from HF PROJECTS has no digital display, etc., and is
a very basic unit by comparison to the "PRO" model. Here's the info on the
lower cost unit:
site.hfprojectsyahoo.com/hf_packer-amp

Here's a review on the lower cost HF PACKER model:
www.eham.net/reviews/detail/5149

This is an update of the information that was recently presented on the HF
PACKER Yahoo-group; This deals with the on-going updates to the firmware
involved with the

The only possible shortcomings on the HF PROJECTS unit is that one has to
assemble the unit, and that the next order placement for the next batch is
depending on the number of potential buyers! But, it looks like a very nifty
unit!! At this time, one cannot buy an amplifier from HF PROJECTS, as
the magic

number has not yet been reached.

It is my assumption that there will be a LOT of Flex-1500 radios sold. As
such, some may want to boost the power level at times. The HF Packer
amplifiers

sure look inviting!

But, which is the better way to go? I am undecided. I really LIKE the way
the HF SuperPacker Pro looks!

At the present time, the HF Packer Pro is able to auto-band select when
hooked to some radios, but this auto-select will NOT work with the
Flex-1500.
(At the present, one would have to manually select the band of
operation, but
this is a simple matter.) Perhaps in the future, this might be a feature
that

could be woven into the many firmware updates?

I am not connected in any way to any company; I am just offering this as
a collection of my thought process. I welcome any comments and of
course, any
other possibilities! I believe the Flex-Radio's Flex-1500 will be a
winner in a

very big way. For a portable/camping radio, this is an attractive unit!

[Flexradio] Flex-1500 and MacBook Pro (or iMac) operation possibilities?

2010-03-29 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Good day;

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of my Flex-1500. I am
wondering (hoping!) that the Flex-1500 will be able to run properly, if
I run one of my Mac computers, and also allow the Windows XP or Windows
7 operating systems with an emulation program such as VMWare Fusion or
Parallels!!

I am ASSUMING that this will be a non-issue, but can only guess.
Tim (Message: 6; Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2010 16:25:25 -0400; From: Tim
Ellison ), you had mentioned, "The FLEX-1500 was
easy to get up and running. The driver issue install is a breeze (like
there isn't anything to install - it uses the generic Windows USB audio
drivers)."

-Have you had the time to use VMware Fusion or Parallels, which can
run 'XP or '7, with the Flex-1500?

I have had great success running my Flex-3000 and 5000 on my iMacs
as well as the MacBook Pro; -But to allow the needed Firewire cable to
be active, I need to run Apple's Boot camp. While this works nicely
(the Firewire port is enabled, if one runs a second operating system in
Boot Camp), it would be extremely nice if I could run XP at the same
time as OS-X. (Which, of course, one can do, if you run one of the
emulation programs.) So; -Anything to report, yet?

Thank you! -Mike- KØJTA

[Flexradio] (Reply) Hamfest "price discount or "show special" pricing!

2010-02-25 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Tim;

You had mentioned, in part:

"At the time of the Raleigh hamfest, the FLEX-1500 should be a shipping
product; fulfilling orders for those who have pre-ordered and paid for a
FLEX-1500. Those orders will be fill before any orders received at the
hamfest.

The FLEX-1500 is already priced very aggressively, so I do not
anticipate anything substantial in that area, but I don't make those
decisions, I'm just the "PR" guy."

This makes perfectly good sense. (Thank you!) Also, the fact that
those of us who have orders now in place will allow us to be receiving
hardware sooner than the show-special folks is a distinct advantage!

Bottom line: Happy to wait, but always looking for that "discount,"
ya know! Really LOOKING FORWARD to getting my '1500!!

[Flexradio] Hamfest "price discount or "show special" pricing!

Message-ID: <4b843b67.8020...@flex-radio.com>

To all Flexers,

Due to a logistics and a scheduling conflict, FlexRadio Systems is not
going to be in attendance at the Charlotte hamfest in March. We didn't
want to leave North Carolina high and dry, so there will be a FlexRadio
booth at the Raleigh (RARS) hamfest on April 3, 2010.
http://rars.org/hamfest/

We will have a FLEX-1500 on display in addition to the FLEX-5000 and
FLEX-3000. There will be a price discount or "show special" for those
submitting orders for FlexRadio SDRs.
==

I am wondering about the comment, "price discount or "show special"
for those
submitting orders for FlexRadio SDRs." Will this apply to the
Flex-1500? -If so, this is not something that folks that have been
sitting on full-price pre-orders will like to see. (Any consideration
for these folks, perhaps?)

Good day, Elan;

I share your apprehension in making a Mac work with a Flex-Radio and
PowerSDR. For me, it was a difficult task, simply because I had chosen
the incorrect Firewire device to disable in my XP operating environment.
I had followed a proceedure on the Flex-Radio KB (knowledge base), but
the words in the original proceedure were different (did not match what
was seen in the DEVICE MANAGER) to the point that I wasted a lot of days
and hours, before I accidentally discovered the correct method.

I had since contacted the originator of the Boot Camp install that would
allow PowerSDR and the like to function on a Mac. I had offered the
changes to this otherwise excellent document; -As yet, I do not see any
modification or update, so I will simply copy the text of the
now-modified proceedure below. I do hope that this will be of help to
you. (Using this modified proceedure, I have been successful in
installing the needed drivers and PowerSDR on two iMacs and one MacBook
Pro.)

Boot Camp Installation Guide (
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/Boot_Camp_Install-Setup.pdf )

Installation Procedure:

Step 1. Go to the Apple web site and download the Boot Camp Installation
Guide.

Step 2. Read the Boot Camp Installation Guide (It is best to PRINT the
manual!)

Step 3. Boot your Intel Mac then start Boot Camp Assistant.

Step 4. Let Boot Camp partition the disk. Boot Camp Assistant will give
you several options for partitioning your disk, including splitting it
half-and-half between Windows and MacOS, making a 32GB Windows
partition, or letting you pick what you need. If you are only going to
use Boot Camp and the
Windows Partition to run PowerSDR and some other ham radio things, e.g.
Ham Radio Deluxe and a digital-mode program like FLdigi or DM780, you
only need a few Gigabytes for your windows partition. I gave my windows
partition 10GB and it was happy. Remember, you may need to leave enough
room for Windows to do an upgrade to SP3 so there needs to be room for
the SP3 installer to do a backup.

Step 5. Let the Boot Camp Assistant start the Windows XP installation
process. NOTE: You must use a WinXP SP2 (service pack 2) install CD.
(You may also use an XP-Service Pack 3 installation disk.)

Step 6. Go through the normal XP installation process.
Select the new partition that was generated by Boot camp.
Allow Windows to a quick format of partition "C: ... [FAT32] ...".
Important: Remember you need to let Windows re-format the new partition
even though Boot Camp formatted the partition as FAT32 when it created it!
This is needed to ensure that Windows XP has a proper boot block in the
partition. If you fail to do this, Windows will not reboot after the
first phase of the Windows installation.

Step 7. Install Windows XP-SP2. (Preferably XP-SP3!) The installation
will restart the computer one time, during the installation process, so
leave the XP installation CD in the Mac.
Once Windows is completely installed and running, EJECT the Windows XP
installation disk, and then insert the "MacOS X Install Disk 1" that
came with your computer, and let it install all the drivers. (In some
cases this will be MacOS X Install Disk-2, not disk-1; If the correct
disk is in place, the Boot Camp drivers will be installed into the
Windows environment; If there are no Boot Camp drivers on the disk, just
eject the disk, and try the other one that came as standard equipment
with your Mac computer.)

Step 8. Download and install all the Apple MacOS X updates. -Do a search
for {download "Windows XP Drivers Update" boot camp} as an example, to

I think Lee has put this to rest. The front end is STOUT and will handle a
very high signal level, but if you want to add decoupling, it can't hurt.

My RX2 antenna is in the near field (5 feet) of my transmitting antenna and I
have no problems running 100 watts.

My question

I have the Flex-3000; Is the receiver able to withstand this same
abuse or treatment? -In other words, is there some added protection in
the Flex-5000 that is not included (not needed?) in the Flex-3000?
In my case, I have two loop antennas; The corners are supported by
a common mast. The corners are within 10 to 15 feet of each other. I
only run 100 Watts of power; No amplifier.

[Flexradio] [CASE CLOSED!!!] Atu malfunction with Flex-3000

2009-04-25 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Dudley, Tim and Jim;

I believe that we can finally put this issue to rest. It is not clearly
mentioned in the manual, but it appears that the Flex-3000 has an
apparent HARD CEILING on the defined 3:1 VSWR that it will accept.
-The puzzler to me was the mention of the unit's ANTENNA IMPEDANCE being
defined as "Antenna Impedance 50 Ohms, unbalanced 6 - 1000 Ohms,
unbalanced (With Tuner ON, 160m - 10m Amateur bands)" (-This is on page
170 of the Flex-3000 manual.) From this loosely defined item, I could
only believe that the ATU was the redeeming factor, which allowed the
unit to "accept" the range of 6 to 1000 Ohms, as per the quoted sample.

Elsewhere, the unit has been repeatedly defined as having an ATU with a
3:1 range. In my use, I have found this 3:1 to be an absolute, or at
least, a closely defined precision point with this particular radio.
Dudley, your unit is able to tune with your sample of 3.3:1 at 3.55
Mhz. Mine will not. But (again) I cannot rightfully expect this to be
the case, as the unit is defined to have the 3:1 limit, or abilities!

It might be good to edit or more clearly define the info that I have
copied from the manual's page 170, as I did find this to be at first
reassuring , as I was pleased to see that the earlier-defined 3:1
ceiling had possibly been expanded.

Just how (or, WHY) the ATU and BYP buttons are lit (colored) is still
not clear to me, even though the facts have been well defined to me by
Tim. What I feel is missing is the ATU button as RED ("ATU clicked and
match not found"), as this is not defined. What actually happens is
that the ATU measures, and determines that the tuner has no possible
solution, so it gives up, and the ATU is shown as red. (This
information could be added to the paragraph "If SWR is not OK, a tuning
cycle is started .")

I did have a friend bring his dummy load over, and we were indeed able
to confirm that the Flex-3000 is able to tune a 2:1 mismatch. (Thanks,
Dudley!)

(Snip from an email from Tim)

[Tim] It does attempt to tune, that is how it determines what the actual impedance
load is and if it is low (<1.1:1) then it bypasses

You had mentioned that your Flex-3000 does not TUNE your dummy load; In this
case, do you get a GREEN ATU button indication in PowerSDR?

[Tim] No. The green button indicates that the tuner is engaged and it is
compensating for an impedance >1.1:1

-Tim, I was not seeing a green button at all, when I was asking the ATU
to load my dummy load. (I now finally know what to expect, when I load
into a dummy load!) I am able to allow the Flex's ATU to tune to a
GREEN ATU indication if I am above 3.935 Mhz, in my case. (3.925 Mhz =
no go, and I get a red ATU display.) I believe that 3.935 is very close
to a 2.6:1 VSWR, as a small point of reference; I do not know what 3.925
is, but it is obviously worse...

So: Case closed. The unit will tune a known 2:1 VSWR. In my case, it
will only tune from 3.935 Mhz and above. (All other bands are an
absolute no-go, but this is OK, as I am exceeding the 3:1 limit, as
defined in the Flex information sources.) I am able to use the unit
with either an MFJ-993 or an LDG Z-11 Pro. These both will tune
readily. I had unjustifiably assumed that I'd be able to free myself
from an added external tuner, per the info on page 170.

73 to all who offered the fine help! -Mike-K0JTA

Dudley Hurry wrote:

Mike,

If the SWR is less than 1.2:1 I don't think that the tuner needs to
tune anything and drops out. My dummy load won't tune either, but
doesn't need to. Also my 75 meter does not tune, but it is 1.08:1..
at 3.847,, but at 3.55 it's 3.3:1, but the tuner will re-tune it to
1.1.. Look at it this way, the SW is smart enough not to waste your
time trying to better your match.. One way to check it out is to T
two dummy loads together to create a 2:1 load and try it there..

Thanks, Dudley;

I will ask a local ham to bring his dummy load over, and I will TEE them
together. (Good idea!) I am surprised that the tuner will (logically)
NOT attempt to tune, if it is looking at a "good enough" load. (Oh,
well...)

You had mentioned that your Flex-3000 does not TUNE your dummy load; In
this case, do you get a GREEN ATU button indication i n PowerSDR?

My loop antenna is 2 or 3 to one VSWR on 75 meters, for sure. In this
case, I'd expect the tuner to at least ATTEMPT to tune. -Even if it
fails, I mean. (Is this not true?) -For example, if one attaches a
load that has a known 10:1 VSWR, is it correct to assume that the ATU
will go through an ATTEMPT to tune, even if it fails? (Which would take
several seconds.) I would fully expect this to be the operation, as
this has been the case for ALL of the many ATU devices that I have
owned. (I have owned way too many, and all had this predictable
try-tune-even-if-fail; -Even my now-gone SDR-1000's ATU did this!)

In my case, the ATU "refuses" after an extremely short tune-period!
-Short tune-period is defined as under one second, which is what I am
seeing. (Only one time, did I see the ATU do a LONG tune-up, resulting
in a GREEN ATU button in PowerSDR. This tune-period took 8 to 10
seconds, as I recall. This was on my loop antenna, the one with the
2:1 or 3:1 VSWR.)

When I attach my LDG Z-11-Pro to the Flex-3000, it takes several seconds
to tune, as I'd expect. As such, I'd expect the Flex-3000's ATU to at
least go through some gyrations, attempting to tune. -Even if it
fails. This is OK and expected, but it is expected to TRY, from my
experience with a lot of other ATU devices that I have owned.

Thank you for your input.

What I did not know was that the "fast tune-up" was not a tune-up
after all! (I had interpreted the ATU button (in RED) and the BYP
(in YELLOW) as what I was looking for, in normal operation. On page
58 of the Flex-3000 operator manual, I see that I should see the ATU
in GREEN.

[Tim] If the ATU button turns green, then it was able to match
something better than what you had previously. If not it will be
bypassed.

[Mike] OK on that; I am tuning into a KNOWN GOOD (tested on an IC-756
Pro-II in RTTY and AM modes) dummy load. I have an expected 1:1
match, no reflected on the Icom radio. It was my hope that the ATU
would accept the dummy load that I am using.

I did see the ATU button in GREEN one time only, this on an antenna
that is less than 3:1 VSWR. (This one time event was seen today,
after a few hours of power-OFF for the radio.)

[Tim] The ATU will only tune antennas that are in between 1.1:1 to 3:1

[Mike] My point exactly. I am tuning into (mostly) the MFJ dummy
load. (This should meet the minimum requirements.) I have tried two
different coax cable assemblies, when I have tried to tune the Flex
into the dummy load; -I have this same non-tune into the dummy load
and/or to the actual antenna.

[Mike] Yet, if I do not tune, (if I ignore the ATU's refusal to tune)
I see 10 Watts of FWD power, and 0 Watts of REF power when I have the
dummy load attached to the Flex-3000. (As it should be, when I am
using a dummy load.) My point is that the dummy load is OK.

At all times (even when I first powered the unit up, and did a test
transmission into the dummy load while chatting with Dudley), I see
the SWR indication under the TX meter selection as 0.0:1. -As one
would expect, transmitting into a dummy load.

[Tim] The SWR meter only works when tuning. If you are just
transmitting, the SWR meter will always show 0.0:1

[Mike] OK on this. I had not known this, but I accept. When I
attempt an ATU-tune (the ATU attempts for a second (maximum time),
then refuses) I do not see any REF power. -Again, I am using a dummy
load, so this is as it should be. I should not see any reflected
power, and I do see the (10) watts of forward power, as it should be.

My settings and findings:
AM mode; Power is set to 10 Watts
10 Watts forward in TX meter FWD PWR
0.0 Watts showing in the TX meter REF PWR
0.0:1 showing in TX meter REF PWR

[Tim] Those numbers look exactly how they should for AM @ 1

Many THANKS to all of the good folks that took the time to reply!! I
will do a fast summary-reply to all that have responded so far as follows:

Dudley, WA5QPZ offered two links:
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50373.aspx
http://kc.flex-radio.com/KnowledgebaseArticle50346.aspx
Both refer to the BOOT CAMP, which WILL deal with Firewire.
(Great!) The second one is OK, but the bar is set very HIGH in the
hardware requirements; 8-core CPU, 10 Gb RAM SEPARATE hard drive...
(Yipes!) The first link looks as if one could achieve this with an iMac
like mine.
Bottom line: Use (or TRY, at least) to run my Vista, with the very
good hints. But, I have no Flex-Radio product at tis time; You had
mentioned that I "try and use the 5K on the Vista machine." I plan to
apply this same effort to the yet-to-be-delivered Flex-3000, though!
And, I fully intend to try the Flex-3000 on my iMac, in some manner.
(THANK YOU!)

Alan, NV8A offered his success with XP-SP3 in his SATA-equipped
computer. -But his has both IDE and SATA hard drives. (I have only
SATA. Ratz.) Alan's mention of a SATA driver is apparently very
important. (Thanks!)

James L. offers confirmation that XP does indeed run with SATA drives!
The link,

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Install-Windows-XP-On-SATA-Without-a-Floppy-F6-47807.shtml
looks great! (Thank you!)

Tim E. endorses using Boot Camp, and offered the same reference as
Dudley's first link above. (Thanks!!)

Kirk, K6KAR mentions his success with his two HP Pavilion computers!
(And the main hurdle is the location (and application) of the DRIVERS!)
Kirk, I agree with you on using XP only! (Thank you!)

Dale B. mentions his XP installation on his Asus P5K-E, with SATA
drives. -Except for the Firewire that was on board, which was resolved
by installing a PCI-Firewire card. Sounds acceptable; My HP has an
on-board Firewire, so I'd most likely have this same smaller hurdle to
cross. (I appreciate your info! Thanks!)

Thank you all for the replies!!

I have not spent time with the project of loading XP onto my
Intel-HP-Pavilion in several months, bit I seem to recall that the XP
disk was simply IGNORED at all times. (THIS was the main hurdle.) Yet,
I could boot from, and install Ubuntu Linux just fine... It is as of
there was no platter in the DVD/CD drive at all, if I tried to boot an
XP disk, or to load the XP operating system on a separate hard drive or
partition! I had gone through a lot of experiments, including making up
a bootable CD that had ten trial auto-loaders, etc. After HP gave up,
so did I...

Well, all of this (XP-loading) has not enough that directly deals
with this fine group's basic interest, so I will leave it at that.
(But, I will research more, now that I have some new possibilities to
load XP onto my computer!) Per Dudley, the Flex-3000 will more than
likely play just fine. Keep in mind that if I can make the Flex-3000
play on -MY- computer, this will be a HUGE testimony to the quality of
the Flex product (My abilities are limited!)

[Flexradio] Flex-3000: Vista and/or Macintosh

2009-03-20 Thread Mike Schwendeman

Greetings, all!

I am (I assume) high on the list to receive my Flex-3000, having
ordered it as soon as I saw the ad in QST in October, 2008. (Maybe, one
fine day...)

In the latest FLEX RADIO DIGEST, I see comments on using (or NOT
using) Vista. On my HP Pavilion, I am led to believe that I have no way
to achieve running XP on this unit. (The reason stems from the fact
that XP has no abilities with a SATA-interfaced hard drive, as I
understand.) I do have Windows 7 loaded and running on the HP, I will add.

So, in my case, I have only two options:
1. Run the Flex-3000 on the HP, running Vista-32 or Windows 7.
2. Seeing if I can run the Flex-3000 on my Mac, with VMware Fusion,
which is running XP.

The best thing to do is to operate the Flex-3000 on a computer that
is running XP, apparently! Ideally, I would really like to install XP
on my Intel-HP computer! HP's help is unable to "allow" this to happen,
apparently. (If anyone has a foolproof (easy?) way to allow me to load
XP, I'd sure appreciate a LINK to the way to accomplish this!)

My HP Pavilion has two hard drives, which is (I assume) the way that
I am now able to choose to boot into Vista or into Windows 7. I would
happily reformat all of the hard drive space, if this would allow me to
install XP.

Going with the second option, what are the needed steps to get the
Flex-3000 to run on an Intel iMac? To me, the issue is the needed
Firewire support. Firewire is not "directly" supported in the VMware
Fusion environment, but I have seen information which has ways to allow
a VMware user to use a Firewire HARD DRIVE; Is this a hint that this
might be possible, to run a Firewire-based radio, such as the Flex-3000
on a Mac?

   Thank you!!!-Mike-K0JTA

Re: [Flexradio] 11kHz DC noise

2007-10-24 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Gerald;

I picked up both of the isolation devices that are available at Radio
Shack, as follows:

(Item #1) Radio Shack "Ground loop eliminator" Cat #: 270-054 @$16.99
(Item #2) Radio Shack "1:1 Isolation transformer" Cat #: 273-1374 @$3.99

Item #1 has no impedance specifications that I can see; It has two circuits.
Item #2 is spec'd as 600-900 Ohms, 300Hz to 5Khz response.

   MY QUESTIONS:
(1.) Is there any advantage to using either of these devices?
-I'd much rather use the lower cost unit, as it will be easier to install.

(2.) Is the impedance of item #1 (600-900 Ohms) acceptable?
-Impedance of item #2 is undefined.

(3.) Where do I apply the (item #1) isolation transformer?
-I have been advised to insert isolation into the LINE OUT port (cable)
on the back of the SDR-1000 radio. -Is this correct?

(4.) Do I really need to use both circuits in item #1?
-Or, would I use two of item #2?

(5.) Per question 4; If two of the circuits are needed, where are the
"isolation paths" to be inserted? (-I assume Line in AND line out?)

Sorry for so MANY questions, but I (and perhaps others) have missed
these basic items.

 Thank you, GERALD!!!

Hey Jim, Radio Shack has a stero version for 16.99, Part no. 270-054. It has
the wrong kind of connectors, but I will bet they have some adapters. They
call it a "Ground Loop Isolator". They also have a 1:1 audio isolation
transformer in their catalog.

Transformers are easier.. all passive devices for one thing, and
they've had decades to make very linear transformers with good bandwidth.
Optos require some power supply, have to deal with the issue of
putting a DC bias on the sending end, etc. All solvable, but it
takes more parts.
Capacitive coupling is yet another galvanic isolation approach.
And, there are some very cool parts from Analog Devices to do
this. But, all in all, transformers are easy.
 Jim, W6RMK
-

Jim;

I have decided to attack this issue, to see if I can loose some of
the amplitude of the "11 Khz DC noise" by employing isolation. Today,
I picked up both of the isolation devices that are available at Radio
Shack, as follows:

(Item #1) Radio Shack "Ground loop eliminator" Catalog #: 270-054 ($16.99)
(Item #2) Radio Shack "1:1 Isolation transformer" Catalog #: 273-1374 ($3.99)

Item #1 has no impedance specifications that I can see; It has two circuits.

(3.) Where do I apply the isolation? (I have been advised to insert isolation
into the LINE OUT port (cable) on the back of the SDR-1000 radio. -Is this
correct?)
(4.) Do I need to use both circuits in item #1? (Or, would I use two of item
#2?)
(5.) Per question 4; -If two of the circuits are needed, where is the
isolation to be inserted? (-Line in AND line out?)
(6.) How much can I expect the 11 Khz noise amplitude's peak to drop? (Is all
of
this WORTH the effort??? -Or, should we all simply accept this artifact as-is?)

No matter which item I use, the cables of my Delta-44 will have to be cut
or adapted in some way. -Which means that I'd have to cut off the
connectors that are part of item #1, or use a bunch of ADAPTERS. (This, or
simply
adapt the low-cost isolation transformer (item #2, above.), which will actually
be a much simpler installation.

Thank you, one and all; I appreciate your time and efforts to help us all,
with your responses.

[Flexradio] 4-pin mic problem is resolved!

2007-04-03 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Army;

I "feel your pain," Army. I am almost there, myself. In my case, I WAS
able to achieve audio to the TX on "plan one" of the 4-pin connector
diagrams in the manual, but I had no PTT. (I had to use the computer
screen's transmit button... to get to TX mode.)
Then, I went to "plan two" of the wiring as shown in the manual, and had
PTT, but no audio. Hmmm...
  (Wait for it...)

My problem was that I had a bad MIC!!! The mic cable was intermittent.
(Slap the forehead, here...) So: Been there, did that.
-Again. (You know... -I bet this is why this nice looking mic is in
"the bin."

Thanks for your input, Army. In my case, I did not have to use the rear
mic port, or the audio-in on the sound card. I now have a second mic
that works well. Now, I am going to try to modify a little-used (but
NEW, this time!) Heil Traveler headset/mic. I feel that I need more mic
gain, and the Heil has a lot more audio output.

[Flexradio] 4-Pin mic connections question/error...

2007-04-03 Thread Mike Schwendeman
Good day;

I have Flexradio SN 0537-9035, with the 4-pin connector. I need to
wire a standard dynamic hand mic to this radio.

I have printed out the manual, but it only shows two 4-pin diagrams.
I have tried both; The last one (oldest model, ship date of "Before Feb
4, 2005.") in the list of three allowed audio from the hand mic, but no
PTT. (I used the computer's display to transmit.)

The other 4-pin diagram's hookup (intended for a ship date of
"Before Jan 11, 2006, After Feb 4, 2005") allowed PTT, but no audio.
(In this second try, I tied Mic (-) to ground. Mic (+) was hooked to
the microphone element. (See below for better details on what I just
typed here...)

I need help in hooking a standard mic up to this radio. Originally,
it was operated with a Heil mic. I bought everything that was
associated with this unit, except for the antenna and microphone. (I(
got the computer/sound card/radio/power supply, etc.)

I would like a schematic for this OLDER version of the radio. -Is
this available? (The newer ones have an 8-pin mic connector; The two
older versions use 4-pin mic connectors.

From the SN I supplied, what is the date of manufacture? (It is
equipped with the 100 watt amp and antenna tuner.) I do know that
if I tie the mic connector's pin 3 to either pin 1 or pin 2, I have "PTT
action."

Here is what I have tried, so far..

===

[FIRST ATTEMPT]
In my case, I had initially begun by using the THIRD set of mic pin-out plans
as per page 10 in the manual I have printed out. (Note: "Third set" is for a
ship date of "Before Feb 4, 2005.")
Pin 1 = Ground -SHIELD (MIC LOW, PTT LOW)
Pin 2 = Microphone audio ---MIC HIGH
Pin 3 = Push To Talk ---PTT SWITCH
Pin 4 = No Connection

In this plan, the four-pin connector only used three of the four pins; I set
the PTT and mic SHIELD (commons) to the "common" pin, per the diagram PIN 1.

With my use of this pin-out-plan, I was unable to achieve PTT function. If I
use the SOFTWARE control panel to go to transmit mode, I was able to see that
the mic was indeed able to pass audio, as the TX power level followed my voice
input. (Summary: Good audio, No PTT.)

[SECOND ATTEMPT]
I used the SECOND of the three mic pin-out plans (intended for a ship date of
"Before Jan 11, 2006, After Feb 4, 2005"). In this attempt, the "Mic (-)" and
the "PTT (-)" were tied together; Both of these points (Pins 2 and 4) were tied
to the shield/ground of my test mic. The microphone high side was tied to the
"Mic (+)" and the mic "ground" was naturally tied to pins 2 and 4 that I had
tied together as I had described.
Pin 1 = Mic (+) - MIC HIGH SIDE
Pin 2 = Mic (-) - MIC LOW SIDE (common) Pin 2 is hooked to pin
4
Pin 3 = PTT (+) - PTT SWITCH; HIGH SIDE
Pin 4 = PTT (-) - PTT SWITCH; LOW SIDE Pin 4 is hooked to pin
2

With this second attempt, I was able to achieve PTT, which was different from
my first attempt. However, I am able to see no audio. -I had TX audio with my
first attempt. (Summary Good PTT, but NO mic audio!)

===

-Looking at the differences between pin-out ATTEMPTS #1 and #2 above, the FIRST
ATTEMPT had the mic HIGH going to what is now defined as "Mic (-)" in the
SECOND ATTEMPT. (I find this strange...)

-In some radios, there is a voltage that is present on a "mic-audio pin" which
provides DC power for a condenser mic. IS THIS THE CASE WITH THE FLEXRADIO?
If this is the case, maybe I have to abandon my dynamic mic, and use a
condenser mic in it's place. (Can I use a dynamic mic with the FlexRadio?) (I
have not had the chance to download the schematics, yet...)
((Update: Have downloaded the schematics at this time!))

Per page 3 of 3 (Table 1 - Connector wiring) which you had sent to me, the Mic
(+) is NOT hooked up to the front panel microphone connector. -Yet, the fellow
I bought the radio had his Heil mic hooked to the FlexRadio's front panel's mic
connector. (!!) -Also, I did have TX audio with my [FIRST ATTEMPT]. I am
tempted to swap the front panel's pins 1 and 2, as this DID allow me to pass
audio to the transmitter...

I have noted that if I tie the mic connector's pin 3 to either pin 1 or pin 2,
I have PTT action. (??)

ON THE SCHEMATIC:
J12/MTA Connector shows pin 1 as the active mic audio input; Yet "Table 1"
shows J12/1 connected to Front panel mic's pin 3, which is part of the PTT
circuit. (From this, it appears that either "Table 1" or the schematic (Title
