back in to go to a computer inside.. so can you test from another network to
confirm that it is not a router problem?

[Flexradio] palette integration?

2015-08-17 Thread Pete M
http://palettegear.com/index.html

Anyone at Flex seen those nifty little slider, button or dials?

Those could be a very nice addition to the flex software, you had the device
that you want and apply it to one of the function in powersdr and you have a
physical interface to control your radio..

2015-08-14 Thread pete M
And I was the one that was not ok to ask to have an open source way to continu
upgrading my radio..

There are stuff that will come up and that a 3000 paired with a computer would
be able to do (Dstar being one) and right now I have no way to go to the open
source community and work it out..

I already do digital voice on HF. not that difficult with freeDV.
http://freedv.org/tiki-index.php

it works cause the main software work like any digital software that interface
to a normal radio..

But a USB dongle is not the same thing..

Thanks flex.. I am so happy.

Interesting new product from Flex.
Zack
N8FNR

NW Digital Radio and FlexRadio Systems® have been working together since
DCC of last year to provide a solution for AMBE encoding and decoding based
on AMBE-3000™ technology, which led to the creation of the ThumbDV™.
FlexRadio Systems®, the premier manufacturer of amateur radio SDR
transceivers, will soon release an update to their SmartSDR software in
support of the JARL’s D-STAR standard. Owners of FLEX-6000™ Signature
Series transceivers may add AMBE encoding/decoding to their radios by
inserting the ThumbDV™ into one of the available USB ports. Use of the JARL
D-STAR digital voice mode will be enabled through the SmartSDR software.
This functionality will be supported in SmartSDR v1.5.

FlexRadio Systems®, the premier manufacturer of amateur radio SDR
transceivers, will soon release an update to their SmartSDR™ software in
support of the JARL’s D-STAR standard through installing the ThumbDV™
Waveform Module into SmartSDR™. Owners of FLEX-6000™ Signature Series
transceivers may add AMBE encoding/decoding to their radios by inserting
the ThumbDV™ into one of the available USB ports. Use of D-STAR digital
voice mode will then be enabled through SmartSDR™ software. “The
partnership of NW Digital Radio and FlexRadio Systems forged at DCC last
year has yielded a unique opportunity for FlexRadio owners to add the
D-STAR mode to their FLEX-6000, as a component of our growing digital voice
offerings.” said Steve Hicks, N5AC, VP Engineering for FlexRadio Systems®.
“It’s been great working with Flex to add D-STAR to their world class SDR
and are excited about being a part of their ongoing development of digital
voice modes.” said Bryan Hoyer, K7UDR, CEO of NW Digital Radio. HF D-STAR
is a growing mode with daily nets on all bands from 80-6 meters, as well as
local VHF/UHF simplex and repeater networks. For more information about HF
D-STAR net operations please visit D-STAR HF Net A real-time HF QSO finder
can be found at HF D-STAR QSO Finder The NW Digital Radio ThumbDV™ digital
voice dongle will be available directly from FlexRadio Systems®, as well as

As we move fully into the age of digital radio, I suppose it might be
argued that one is not a REAL ham unless one writes FPGA code in Verilog
and mounts ball grid arrays at home. I am CW-competent (~35wpm) and spent
most of yesterday at my bench repairing and upgrading an old transceiver.
Today, I am replacing caps on a friend's AV amplifier. In other words, I
am not afraid of solder burns or schematics.

That being said, it seems to me presumptuous to judge what one must do, or
know, or think, or feel to be a REAL ham. The enjoyment of ham radio is
where one finds it, is it not? After all, we pursue this hobby because it
is fun, not as a proof-of-capability contest. Even if it were the latter,
what capacity should be judged in the age of SDR?

I am pretty competent in basic electronic theory and I am reasonably good
with my hands. Does that make me a better ham than a friend of mine who
can scarcely repair a three-prong plug but has a profound knowledge of
digital signal processing and computes FFTs in his head?

That's the question, isn't it?

2015-06-15 Thread Pete M
I don't know about the OP. but if I can, I do what ever is needed, even if I
can buy most of the stuff that I need, i will try to build it..

heck I even repair every damn thing I can. change my breaks on my car , do
the oil change and I did fix my spa this spring.

I am learning C right now so that I will be able to do some coding as my
coding skill is pretty rusty and Cobol fortran and pascal are not up to date
language anymore.

And lastly, even if I have a salary that put me in the 10% of the highest
salary In my city, I build my antenna's. Install them and if it does not
work I curse at me.. ;-)

So yes we are all different. But I have dyslexia, wich never stopped me from
having 3 diploma and it did not stopped me of teaching electronics, computer
and now I negociate work agreement and even propose text to change work law
in my province..

I¹m finding this thread really hard to comprehend, we are all
radio hams

and have gone through various
Courses around the world, I would never ever consider buying a lead for any
headset either Radiosport, Heil or Computer
Headset I have sucessfully made all headsets work with every radio I have
used both Flex or YaKeIc. So why not heat up the soldering iron and

Terry,

The source for PowerSDR has always been available, it is part of the GPL
license. You can get it by sending an e-mail to g...@flexradio.com

PowerSDR uses VS2008. I have converted the projects to work with
VS2010, but we still use VS2008 because there is no compelling reason to
make the change.

PowerSDR, but I'm not sure their version supports Flex hardware any
longer.

Also, the fact that the Flex PowerSDR compiled ONLY under Visual Studio
2003 is a dramatically limiting factor. I bought a newer version of
Visual Studio (2005), only to find out the code would NOT compile under
it. For years.

I'm not faulting Flex at all on any of the above. And, I'm not arguing
one way or the other. I'm just checking on your assumption that it would
be reasonable to modify and improve the latest distributed version of
PowerSDR.

Do you have source for the 6500-series radios yet?

They don’t have to be gods to prevent mere mortals from working with/on
the code. They just have to restrict the distribution of source, or use
tools that are difficult for those mere mortals to obtain.

BTW, I also have a 6500, and an SDR-1000. I'd rather Flex spend its time
on providing the improvements to SmartSDR than improving PowerSDR any
further. And, I believe that's what they are doing.

So, learning how to modify the open source code yourself is an
unreasonable price?

Given the wish, the will, and time isn't it at least under consideration?

I just question the rush to pay for something that's free and licensed
to stay that way.
I bought an SDR1000, Flex5000A, and Flex6500 just because I could tinker
with them in software. Seriously the existing code was written by
Amateurs, not Magicians or Gods.
If they could do it. Why can't I? I have the hardware, the wish, and the
wetware. I'm beginning to find the time, and the required skills. I
won't predict what will happen next. I want to "do". not just "use".

So I'm going to hang on to mine. They're still new, and getting newer.

superior to much of what's out their from the pacific rim. As a satellite

amazingly capable radio and very versatile compared to most on the market

- Is there a way to send the content of the memories in CWX through

- Has anybody though ow working on a nicer GUI? Something making it look

Just edit your shortcut and add the datapath parameter. You might want
to move your database file to the target folder too.

Something like

<"C:\Program Files\FlexRadio Systems\PowerSDR v2.2.3\PowerSDR.exe"
-datapath:d:\wavs\>

[Flexradio] FS: SDR-1000

2011-09-22 Thread Pete Ferrand

Offered here before looking elsewhere. This is the 1 watt, four board, four pin
microphone version. No tuner, no 100 watt amplifier.

To the best of my knowledge it has all the prescribed updates. I've used it for
more than three years. I believe a previous owner installed a quieter fan.
Smoke-free environment.

Two modifications I've made: I've installed a 10 MHz TCXO inside the case that
gets rid of all visible drift. The original oscillator is included as well.

In order to avoid a continuing problem of erratic contacts on the 3.5mm audio
jacks (as has been well described here on the reflector), I have attached a
pigtail with conventional RCA type phono plugs. The original jacks are still
connected and installed and can be used without making any changes. But the RCA
plugs have been totally reliable.

I'm selling just the radio itself. The latest version of the docs can be
downloaded as you know. I'll be happy to send photos. It's in working condition
and being sold as-is, no returns.

Price is $375 plus shipping and it will be carefully packed. Or you can pick up
in the Milwaukee-Chicago area. Payment by PayPal, postal money order, or
cashier's check.

I will be happy to ship internationally. If you want an estimate of shipping
costs, please check with the appropriate carriers and figure 7 kilos from
postal code 53140.

Thank you very much, Tim. I have followed the procedure, unfortunately
without results.

Don't you think the rx/tx IC could be damaged? I stupidly toasted all the
three PA control outputs (before I read the manual, obviously) by connecting
directly to a TL-922. Is the break-in part of the same component?

Thanks again.

[Flexradio] more on the CW maddening problem

2010-10-01 Thread Pete Parisetti
In follow-up to my lamentations about the CW semi-break in locking up, one
additional funny thing: CW via CWX works perfectly fine. It's just the rx/tx
switchover with the paddle that causes the problem.

Funny, isn'it?

[Flexradio] new and maddening CW problem

2010-09-30 Thread Pete Parisetti
Hello list.

Something has come up that's driving me mad. Never happened before, and now
it completely precludes my CW operating, which is 97% of what I do...

Semi break-in will kick in allright, but then it won't disengage. The radio
stays in TX and I have to turn it off an on again. No problem whatsoever on
SSB.

Flex 5000, PowerSDR 2.08, Win7, i3 dual core.

Thanks in advance for any wisdom.

[Flexradio] CW grief, a soution?

2010-09-21 Thread Pete Parisetti
I was increasingly confused...
Running today Flex5K, PowerSDR 2.08 on a windows 7, i3 dual core machine
with 6 GB RAM and a good video card. The processor charge is generally below
25% and never above 30%.

Still, I get plenty of annoying popping/cracking and just plain bad keying
when in semi-break in. Same story when using CWX. Actually, the situation
today is much worse than what I used to get with my previous, under-rated
Pentium machine running XP, hence the confusion.

BUT.

It has suddenly dawned upn me that the problem might be related to RF
feedback... I turned off the PA and worked barefoot, and the problem seems
to have disappeared. 100 watts - no grief.

Anybody else noticed this?

[Flexradio] 5000A erratic behaviour

2010-09-16 Thread Pete Parisetti
In the last couple of weeks my 5000A has started showing signs that i can
only describe as "erratic behaviour".

I run 2.08 on an i3 dual core Win7 machine, but the problems seem to reside
in the radio and not the software. At startup, despite hearing all the right
relay noises, at times the RX would not come alive when I hit the start
button. Then I close powersdr and start again and sometimes this does the
trick. Other times I have to power the radio itself off and on again.

Then, less often, the RX would work but I would not get any power out.
Again, the problem would disappear by either closing and re-launching the
sofware, or by hard reset.

Grateful for any wisdom.

Re: [Flexradio] I need advice about hooking up an amp

2010-09-13 Thread Pete Parisetti
Chris,

By hooking up directly my 5000 to a TL-922, I have grilled not one but all
three of the ports of the IC controlling PTT functions. This is a painful
thing, as replacing the IC is not something that a "normal" lab could do,
and I have to send my 5000 to a Flex lab in another country. (I don't really
want to be without it, so I am usig a footswitch to key the amp now...)

It was certainly my fault, as the need for an external relay/buffer is
clearly mentioned in the manual. Nevertheless, I cant help but to think that
it was a bit "cheap" on the part of Flexradio not to include it in the
circuitry. On a product of this class...

Good luck with the Clipperton. I had one and it was quite something - lots
of firepower, but you'll have to engage the internal ATU of your radio, as
the amp has no tuned input.

[Flexradio] Help! Can't tx on RX2's frequency

2010-01-18 Thread Pete Lindsay
Hi Fellow flexers,

I hope someone can help me on this one, I have tried to look through
the available documentation and knowledge centre but have drawn a
blank. I am using N1MM to control my Flex 5000A, using PowerSDR
1.18.3. With RX2 enabled I can see the frequency of VFO A (RX1) and
VFO B (RX2) on the two N1MM entry windows, one for each VFO. My
problem is that I hear a station on RX 2 I want to call but hen I
click on the VFO B entry window on N1MM and then go to TX PowerSDR
switches on the "SPLIT" mode button and the TX frequency goes to the
one last used by VFO B when is was controlling the "MultRX", i.e. the
second channel of the first RX rather than the current frequency of
the RX2. This happens even though the "MultRX" button is OFF.
The TX frequency shows up on the bottom half of "VFO A" in red. How
can I TX on the RX2's freq?? Even clicking on the "TX" button just
below the VFO B doesn't help as this is overridden by the "split"
button activated by N1MM on TX.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Pete, G4CLA.

Re: [Flexradio] SO2R is on the air with the F5K

2010-01-13 Thread Pete Lindsay
Hi Lee,

Very interesting post thanks! I seem to have a problem with trying to
change between Tx'ing on VFO A and VFO B. When N1MM send the "FT1" CAT
command to set the VFO B to Tx this seems to switch on the "SPLIT"
function in Power SDR (I'm using 1.18.3). This has the bizarre affect
of setting the TX frequency not to that of RX2 but to the last used
frequency of the VFO B used by the "MultRX" , even though "MultRX" is
not switched on!! The manual seems to suggest that this is the
expected mode of operation of the SPLIT function, how did you get
round this?

[Flexradio] sdr-1000 AM xmit spur

2009-09-13 Thread Pete Ferrand

Put my SDR-1000 on AM transmit for the first time in a long time. Station in
Kansas reported that not only was I on 7290 but I was on 7268 and 7240 as well.
Turns out I could hear the spurs here myself.

It's evident only on AM, SAM, and FMN modes, all other modes are apparantly
fine. Audio quality is ok on the spur frequencies. If I set the transceiver for
3890, then there's a spur at 3868 and 3840.

By adjusting the transmit image rejection sliders I can minimize the spur down
to vanishingly small levels, however if I change the drive level the spurs are
back, although they can be balanced out at the new level.

I am using 9 kHz for IF, however changing this to 11 does not change the
behavior or location of the spurs, or the ability to balance them out at a
specific drive level. VAC is not enabled nor installed.

I am using PowerSDR 1.18.2 with a dual core 2.7 GHz Intel based MSI MS-7415
computer running Windows 7 RC with a pci serial port card and motherboard
parallel port. This is an old four stack 1 watt SDR1K with a 10MHz TCXO and an
external amplifier. Sound card is a Delta 44. Last year I hardwired a cable
with phono plugs to replace all the SDR1K's mini jacks as they were causing all
sorts of problems. Sound card output voltages are balanced.

I have some test gear including Tek 455 and 7000 scopes and Cushman 30 MHz
frequency selective levelmeter and a number of receivers but no spectrum
analyzer.

I have no idea what's going on here and a search of the archives reveals
nothing.

Thanks for any help.

[Flexradio] 6 Meter PreAmps....

2009-07-21 Thread Pete M
After doing inventory and releasing those units that a check misteriously never
showed up for AND the 3 completed in the past 2 days ...I have the following 6
Meter Preamps remaining. I have 5 (of which is now on hold)...so 4 Flex 6m
back panel (rx loop) spaced connector preamps and 2 normal spaced 6 meter
preamps. All will work with the Flex 5K or any 6 meter rig for that
matter...and are equal in performance ( actually prefer the normal spaced units
because they are much easier to repair and tend to be more stable). I have
remaining 2 sets of parts that will not be built and many remaining GaAs Fets
as I will save all these as spares for those people should they ever need a
replacement.

So basically there are 6 remaining preamps that are not spoken for at this
time. Price still the same $75 + $7 Shipping via priority mail w/ins...( To
CONUS )...outside USA more.

Thanks, Pete WA2ODO

[Flexradio] 6 Meter PreAmps....

2009-07-16 Thread Pete M
Because of several requests and suggestions, I have redesigned the 6 Meter
Preamp for the Flex 5000a. It now has the matching spacing that is on the back
of the Flex ... allowing mounting it to the radio with BNC to BNC barrel
connectors. I have 3 available at this time...#1 is .24 dbnf / 20.30 dbg, #2
is .21 dbnf / 21.12 dbg, and #3 is .21 dbnf / 22.45 dbg. These were measured
with a cal'd Eaton 2075/ HP346B system and cross checked with an HP8970B/HP346B
system. They are the same price $75 each with $7 priority mail w/ ins
shipping. Thanks, Pete WA2ODO

I remember back in 1976, we were developing a store controller system that
used an 8 inch floppy drive as its main storage device. The diskette drive
used a geneva mechanism for moving the head. It took 5 full seconds for
the head to move from one end of the floppy to the other!

Re: [Flexradio] Palm Paddle and Code Cube

2009-06-06 Thread Pete Zawasky
Perhaps I have done what you suggest and perhaps I am not happy with
with the internal keyer perhaps because of my heavily overloaded older
laptop. Since I may have access to a Palm Paddle Code Cube keyer, I was
simply asking for information to decide if this would be a good keyer to
compare the internal keyer to. Right now I am comparing the FLEX
internal keyer to the keyer in my K2 which I like. On the other hand,
one might ask why I don't just use my Vibroplex bug that I got when I
got my Extra back in 1974 or so. Now if I would just learn to type
decently, perhaps keyboard cw would be the way to go. And then there is
the old straight key...

To answer your question, of course I tried the internal keyer and not
all keyers work exactly the the same. That's what is so great about
this hobby.

I am probably missing something (I don't use CW very often) but why
wouldn't you just plug the paddle directly into the radio and use the
keyer in PowerSDR?

For those in the mood, try the KE5DTO "PrettyBetty" Branch... very
nice addition of the "skins" mostly from IK3VIG... I am running 1.19.0
svn 3050..in XP and it is running very well so far and really LOOKS
GREAT!!
I have to say, again, Many Thanks and Kudos to all involved in the
evolution of the Flex and the world of True SDR Radio(s). It just keeps
getting better and better...!!

[Flexradio] Bug???

2009-03-28 Thread Pete M
Hi All,

What I am finding w/SVN 2828 (Flex 5000a w/ rx2) When I use split (with vhf
form ...not tried HF) I am finding that the mode is set by the RX2 screen even
if RX2 is not enabled or being used. Example ... I Tx USB and want to split to
few Khz up, if RX2 is LSB then you tx LSB even if RX2 not being used or
enabled. Is this a bug?

Hello

New to Flex... happy owner of new Flex-5000A, not on the air yet,
preparing
PC and installing drivers and software to get radio on the air

I noticed the the last flex driver is now 3.4.0.4877... I just installed
the
driver and it looks fine with PowerSDR 1.16.2 - BTW how to save sample
rate
in BUS to 96 kHz, it works OK but when I reset PC it gooes back to
48kHz...

Another question I tried the the last W2RF branch and I can not get
it

work with the new 3.4.0.4877 drivers? PowerSDR can not communicate with
Flex-5000... Just wonder what I am doing wrong or is it just the new
driver
issue?

[Flexradio] Help again....

2009-02-18 Thread Pete M
All I seem to do is take a step forward and two steps backwards. I have gotten
VAC and powersdr to talkfinally...with the kind help from Brian WB6RQN.
But I can't go any further because I need the flex to control a SPE amp and
other programs...requiring the use of DDutil. For the life of me I can't get
that to run on this computer...it works fine on every other computer in the
house...but not the Quad core. I run XP SP3, Netfr 2.0 SP1, 4 gb ram, latest
powerSDR, etc. I have tried 2 different versions of DDutil and zip. It
installs fine but the minute I open the exe I get that it encountered an error
and shuts down. I can't open it to configure or use it. I installed it on
other computers (XP also) and it is fine. Any suggestions? I have reloaded
XP and all programs ... installed all new SP's.

2009-02-17 Thread Pete M
Can anyone help me with the setup of powerSDR (almost latest SVN ...and
Flex5000a) and VAC to do RTTY on HF frequencies. I am new to RTTY and I am
having trouble with the learning curve. I have tried MMTTY with VAC
(non-demo) and get nothing. I have sucessfully used Hamscope on BPSK to
decode but can not digipan, cwget, multipsk, or HRD to decode anything.
What am I doing wrong? Or must I use a Rigblaster and forget the VAC ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OK, but I really don't want to buy whole new transceiver just to do this once
in a great while.

Note that I don't want simultaneous receive and transmit.

Is there any reason the software couldn't do it? Seems that if we can switch
frequencies between transmit and receive, we should be able to switch modes.

I'll feel really silly if there's some obvious way to do this that I've

If not, can I make this happen with HRD or some other Windows package?

I'm using an SDR-1000.

Re: [Flexradio] blown SDR-1000 final opamp

2008-12-10 Thread Pete Ferrand
Ahti, Dudley:

I'm using a Delta 44. That's interesting, I had been thinking the amp failed
due to output issues as I've rarely seen opamps fail due input drive problems.
I hadn't checked the circuit but in most designs the would have been limited at
some earlier stage.

Ahti, how did you set up the diodes? Back to back from the high side of the
input transformer to ground, or across the differential inputs or?

While this is an easy fix to implement and does make the circuit more robust as
I asked I doubt it will fix the issue. I will give it a try though.

In both cases where the chip failed the drive setting was less than 10 and the
rig was in "tune" mode for a few seconds. In addition, for the almost half year
I've had this working the rig was terminated in a 50 ohm resistor in the
linear. In both cases where it failed the radio was working into some other
load.

If it's extreme swr sensitivity or possibly parasitics I can guess at the
causes but I do not know what the logical troubleshooting procedure would be.

[Flexradio] blown SDR-1000 final opamp

2008-12-09 Thread Pete Ferrand

Some months ago I blew the final opamp in my 1W SDR-1000 whilst matching it to
a linear. Wasn't happy about that but since I accidentally hooked up the
attenuator resistors wrong I wasn't too surprised since the rig saw a very high
impedance. Worked fine ever since.

Unfortunately I'm less happy about blowing the amp this morning, about a half
year after that first incident, whilst trying it on six meters for the first
time. Without the linear which doesn't cover six. Just wanted to see if I could
work a couple locals. As far as the MFJ-269 showed there was a perfect match
into the ATU but when I increased the power beyond about a tenth of a watt
output the opamp popped again.

Besides the time and money aspect, the circuit board clearly can't take a lot
of parts replacements.

Has anyone figured out how better to protect this part? Or some better
solution. This is a four stack including the rfe board, older version with
nylon spacers.

Thanks.

Re: [Flexradio] Problem with 5K and Henry Classic

2008-10-04 Thread Pete Ferrand

Hi Larry et al:

>hardly assumes blame because of it's age! However, if you read my post
>you should see that I am suspecting just that, the Henry input circuit,
>not the Flex. The switching relays, in the Henry, may be too slow to
>switch the amp input circuit before power is up on the 5K.

I've had a 2K Classic X floor console for many years and while I haven't run
any of the Flex products with it, I've used dozens of different rigs with no
issues.

Firstly, my linear doesn't have open frame relays, which is not to say yours
doesn't since I wouldn't be surprised if Henry used different things as they
were available. It was shipped with those little ice cube type enclosed relays,
grossly undersized for what they were used for, and eventually the output one
self-destructed and I replaced it 10 years ago with a Kilovac vacuum relay
which works fine.

The delay in PowerSDR works fine with my 1K and my homebrew switching for a
broadband amp; it's clearly designed for that purpose so should be ok.

If the relay were slow in closing your 5K would at worst see a momentary high
swr. If the input circuit were mistuned you would see a continuous high swr. I
believe the 5K would be protected against that sort of thing and would give you
an indication of swr. It's a good idea to check the exciter to linear swr, of
course, but I'm sure you would have seen the rig complaining about going to an
open circuit. Your 570 would also complain about swr issues.

One thing that easily could kill the final would be a parasitic in the linear.
All tube amps are potential parasitic problems and you can have them for no
obvious reason. My Henry's never had that but it's happened to others. There
are plenty of fixes on the web and I'm not getting into the controversy over
that. It could also be a neutralization issue with the amp. Both these things
may have been triggered by the exact frequency, power, line voltage, humidity,
temperature, etc. Power grid tubes sometimes develop momentary anomalies on
their own.

The amp could also be perfectly ok and the 5K could have failed anyway, I've
seen solid state amps fail with defective relays, board issues and any number
of things.

Good luck with it.

Re: [Flexradio] differences between PSK31 demodulators

2008-07-21 Thread Pete M
Digital...when working is good, it has good and bad pointsI am using
analog...which works properly for me. Digital is not a cure-all. VAC is
crude and has many bugs ... and the author seems to have an attitude towards
everyone (or at least me) who won't send him the money...I even wanted to
send money, but had a few questions needing answers first. He refused to
answer questions about VAC w/o me buying it first and then said no refund if
it didn't do what I wanted it too. DUH!!! Tell answer the question first so
I know to avoid problems.

Anyway that is a different issue. VAC will NOT allow functioning with an
external sequencer ...at least properly. Whereas a hard wired analog
will...i.e.- rigblaster, Signalink, etc. Now that the F5K has delayed
relays it might be possible...but before it was not.

What we need is an open source type of VAC that we can configure to our own
needs. It is also ashame that Flex is relying (not totally...there are work
arounds) on a sole-source program by others for operation of parts of its
PSDR, by putting reference to it in their code. Why haven't they put
reference, links or buttons to logging programs, voice keyers, digital
programs, etc? Makes you wonder

Re: [Flexradio] High SWR Problem...

2006-10-15 Thread Pete
Thanks for the responses. Yes, it certainly sounds like RF getting into
the USB cable rather than a bug. I guess the antenna needs more work -
but I already new that -- just waiting until it's a bit colder hihi.

Crit - sorry to hear you are still having USB problems of a more general
nature -- don't despair, I'm sure there is a solution; maybe I'm just
lucky with the particular computer hardware I had on hand when I got my
SDR -- my computer started out as a 2.4 GHz Dell P4 that has since been
modified -- took a lighning hit a couple of months back that fried the
motherboard so I replaced that with a non-Dell (Intel) board and, other
than this problem today, have had no USB problems on either flavor of
the system.

[Flexradio] High SWR Problem...

2006-10-15 Thread Pete
While experimenting with a multiband wire antenna today, I ran into a
problem. On one of the bands the radio reported high swr (I think this
was on 10m) when I went into tune mode.

PowerSDR then displayed a dialog indicating that the USB connection was
no longer functional (can't remember the exact text).

I seem to remember there were some problems reported recently where
users were having USB disconnect problems but I don't remember them
being related to reported high swr.

It was necessary to go into setup and check the usb box again in order
to get the radio to operate normally.

This is the only time I've ever experienced any problems with the usb to
parallel connection. Just wondering if this is something others have
seen, before I file a bug report.

Re: [Flexradio] Is Anyone Using the SDR1000 as Primary Radio

2006-09-21 Thread Pete
My SDR-1000 is my primary rig. I keep my old FT101EE as a backup rig
but it hasn't seen much use lately (except when my QTH took a lightning
hit back in August and I lost the motherboard in the pc I use with the
SDR-1000 - it sure felt weird going back to a radio without a
panadapter!)

I generally keep up-to-date with the SVN releases and, I think like most
people on the reflector, tolerate the odd bug in order to have the
latest and greatest!

I can't imagine going back to an "ordinary" radio again -- even the
$10,000 radios seem ordinary now.

If I had one complaint, it's that my SDR is telling me I need better
antennas! Unfortunately, I don't think there are any software-defined
antennas on the horizon.

Re: [Flexradio] Crackle on Received Audio...

2006-08-07 Thread Pete
I tried a couple of experiments this evening based on some of the
suggestions received earlier today:

1) The newer Delta 44 driver from M Audio did not improve the audio
quality.

2) Installing a Matrox PCI display adapter (instead of the on-board
intel display adapter) did not yield any improvement

3) Turning the graphics display off(normally I run in Panadapter mode)
significantly reduced the audio dropouts (if that is the correct
characterization).

4) Minimizing the PowerSDR application to the task bar completely
eliminates the drop outs - audio sounds normal.

4) Setting PowerSDR to realtime priority appears to fix the problem
(even with Panadapter turned on).

This seems to confirm the idea that the audio drop-outs are due to
graphics processing load. Again, I stress that this is essentially the
same PC I was using before without any problem -- the changes are
limited to the new motherboard that does not have an AGP slot in which I
can install my ATI Radeon graphics card.

This set of tests was done against K6JCA console dated July 29 (svn
567).

Based on Lee's earlier comments and Bob's response, it would appear that
there is still an issue that needs some research. If I get a chance
while on vacation, I'll check for updates here and on the bug list and
consider filing a bug against this. Meanwhile...off to jolly old
England -- pip pip!

Thanks for the info.

Have signed up for dttsp-linux.
I thought "sudo" might be at the _root_ of the issue ;)
The system updates finally completely downloaded and installed ok: must
have been a server glitch over the weekend.

[Flexradio] [Somewhat OT] Ubuntu observations...

2006-07-23 Thread Pete
I've recently installed Ubuntu 6.06 on an older PC I have in the shack -
a P3 500MHz Box with 384MB of ram. This machine is dedicated to Ubuntu.
So far, I'm very impressed with what I see. This is by far the cleanest
Linux install I've done (I've played with Red Hat, Suse ,and Mandrake
previously). I'd encourage anyone who hasn't tried it yet to give it a
go. No problems with the install, found all my hardware just fine.
I've installed a few additional packages subsequently - primarily the
gcc and g++ development tools.

My main machine for running my SDR-1000 is a Dell 2.8GHz P4 with 512MB
and Delta44 (Unfortunately awaiting repair after a recent lightning hit
that left it d-e-a-d and also took out my router, an ethernet card, a
pcmcia ethernet card on a laptop, and blew the fuse in one of my desktop
power supplies!). I'm hoping that the imminent split of DSP engine and
GUI will ultimately lead to a totally Linux SDR-1000 platform - what's
happening on this front - for instance, are there soon to be published
APIs for developing a GUI that talks to the DSP? What else is
happening?

A couple more questions for the Ubuntu gurus...

I don't remember being prompted to enter a root password during the
install. I'd like to know this or be able to set this (on the
assumption that I'll probably need it eventually). How do I do this?

Ubuntu tells me there are 130 packages available for update however, the
update quit when it got to package #45 - is this simply a dead host
somewhere? I've tried kicking this off several times over the weekend
and it can't seem to get any further.

[Flexradio] SWR Meter?

2006-04-02 Thread Pete
According to the 1.6 manual, there is a SWR meter selection for transmit.
This does not appear to be in the drop-down on the 1.6 PowerSDR console - is
the manual incorrect or is the SWR meter not implemented yet?

Re: [Flexradio] SDR-1000 Remote Control

2005-09-23 Thread Pete K6XL

Larry W8ER wrote:

Right-clicking on taskbar works, as a couple people mentioned.

Another way, depending on which version of RDP (Remote Desktop) you are
using, which doesn't require a mouse, is to invoke the Windows security
menu on the remote machine with CTRL+ALT+END, and then go to the Task
Manager by tabbing to the button there.

Regarding RDP vs VNC:

 - If both machines have native RDP it is MUCH faster, more reliable,
and more secure than VNC.

 - If you are using a BSD or Linux client with a Windows server, a VNC
server and client setup works better than using rdesktop on the Unix box.

 - Of the various versions of VNC, TightVNC has proven to be by far the
most stable in my experience. I use 1.3dev7. See http://tightvnc.org.
