[Flexradio] Playback using PSDR demo
I've been asked to record a section of this weekends IOTA contest using my F5K. The recording will be used sometime in the future in a club talk about the contest etc. The person giving the talk is not a Flex owner so the thinking is to use PSDR 1.18.6 in demo mode using a standard onboard soundcard, running W7/64 Given that I have no idea of the specification of the soundcard to be used in the PC is it best to be on the safe side and record pre-processed at 48KHz rather than the full 192KHz which the 5K is capable of. To put it another way if I were to record at 192KHz is it still possible to playback the file using PSDR 1.18.6 in demo mode even though it might only be running with a basic on board 48KHz soundcard. Another thought - will 1.18.6 actually run in demo mode under Win7/64 Trevor G0KTN ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] 160 preamp
Hi Dale, Totally agree about using separate rx antennas on the low bands - I've been using Wellbrook loops for a number of years and find them extremely effective. However my point about the preamp is that as soon as I switch to 160 the button is greyed out and only becomes available again if I tune above 2 MHz and according to the release notes this behaviour has been fixed in the latest release. So I'm wondering if its just me or is everyone else seeing the same thing 73 Trevor G0KTN Original Message dated Tuesday 9 September 2008 Hello Trevor, The internal preamp in the FLEX-5000 begins to roll off below 3.5 MHz, so it doesn't have much gain at 160 meters. I've been experimenting with small receiving loops on 80m and 40m and of course the preamp works fine in both instances, but I also plan to build a loop for 160m, and will build an external stand-alone preamp which will be placed into the RX1- In/Out loop along with the loop itself. The RX loop is very convenient since the T/R switching is handled for you, and you won't have to be concerned about further protecting an external preamp. 73, Dale WA8SRA Trevor Smithers wrote: Have just upgraded my 5000 to the latest drivers and 1.14.0 and all appears to be well. Re: [Flexradio] NR (was ANF)
WELL PHOOEY, that won't do. We will have to work on how optimize the settings I've been hesitant to mention NR because everyone seems satisfied with it, however personally I've never found the results to be as good as the outboard units from companies such as BHI in the UK and Michels-Engineering in Germany in getting rid of, for example, low band frying bacon type qrn and general hash etc . The german unit is designed specifically for the extraction of the speech waveform when surrounded by noise. BHI is similar but works with cw as well. NR was greatly enhanced with the introduction of Block LMS but to my mind/ear still introduces a sort of muddiness to the audio, a loss of brightness etc which the outboard units (especially the Michels unit) do not. Remember I'm talking weak signal SSB, 160/80/40 gray line dx etc. I suspect that the cw guys are quite happy with NR as it stands. Perhaps we need two separate NR systems, one specifically designed for the recovery of speech and the other for cw, in the presence of noise. Its difficult to describe in words so here are a couple of links to some audio samples of both units in operation http://www.home.vrweb.de/michels/sound_demo.htm http://www.radio.bhinstrumentation.co.uk/html/demonstration.html There is a downside to using these units in that they are only capable of working with a mono input so I loose the binaural (which is a shame) and sub rx functions, but hey you can't have everything.. or can we :-) Regards to all Trevor G0KTN ___ FlexRadio mailing list FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archive Link: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ FlexRadio Knowledge Base: http://kb.flex-radio.com/ FlexRadio Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

Re: [Flexradio] A few observations with Preview15 and contesting
Noise reduction really knocked out the noise (S9+10 QRN), but it also really knocked out the audio level significantly and the intelligibility a little bit. Almost like a really good attenuator rather than NR. I adjusted the NR gain to 100 and it didn't seem to make a difference. Turning off Block LMS degraded the effectiveness of the NR, but didn't make much difference in the audio level reduction. Have to agree with this comment - although I might add that the current NR version is a really vast improvement over the previous incarnation which tended to make a real mess of the intelligibility aspect. Hopefully there is more that can be done on the NR front. 4.) Noise reduction that will stomp S9+20 static crashes and allow the audio to come through unmodified As a pointer to what can be achieved I would suggest that if anyone has a BHI NEIM1031 in-line unit (GAP Hear-it In Line Module in the US) they connect it in line between speakers/headphones, set it to level 4 (15dB) and see what you think. To my mind this produces a significant reduction in background/band noise with no reduction in the intelligibility of the audio. Personally I don't think that the goal should be to reduce the background noise to zero anyway, as I believe this tends to reduce spatial awareness as to what's going on around you. 73 to all Trevor G0KTN

Re: [Flexradio] RF Noise from Presonus Firebox
Ross, Tim, Guy and any other fellow sufferers. I use a Firebox as well and reading these posts got me checking around with a hand held scanner and as a result I can confirm that the firewire cable is indeed radiating quite badly. I've found two peaks around 13.968 and 16.357 Mhz and is strongest at the Firebox end reducing slightly as the scanner is moved down the cable towards the pc connection. With the SDR I can hear the broadband noise (bit like a fast moving steam train, chuff-chuff-chuff etc) all the way from 10mhz to 20mhz at around S3 increasing to S7 at the peak frequencies. Its probably still there below 10mhz but is covered up by the normal qrm etc. Did the same check with my TS850 with the same result. Anyway, I managed to get two turns of the Firewire cable on 3 Fair-Rite type 43 cores (2643802702) and it cured the problem immediately. Type 43 should provide a better performance at HF as opposed to the FT-140-J core which appears to be better suited to 2mhz and below. Trevor G0KTN

Re: [Flexradio] VAC setup
what have I missed? Well, two things actually. The first was a conversation in the mail archive between N4HY AB7R about the necessity of controlling the VAC level to the external program used for digi modes and the second was the actual implementation of a receive gain control on the VAC setup screen. I reduced the receive gain to -20db and bingo, perfect psk copy in HRD and MixW. Trevor G0KTN
[Flexradio] VAC setup
I've been setting up HRD and MixW using N4HY's excellent set of instructions for VAC Vcom and everything appears to be communicating as it should. The problem I have however is that the audio input to PSK31(HRD) MixW appears to be grossly overdriven (the screen goes from its normal dark blue to bright yellow across the whole of the receive bandwidth) and I can't see any way of reducing it - none of the soundcard panels work and reducing the Consul AF control only reduces the AF output. There are QRSS tests going on at the moment between EU ZL on 30m with confirmed 8 mW (to a Microvert antenna) reception in ZL. PSK08 is used mainly on LF but looks good for the 80m tests that were mentioned on the forum some time ago. I've no idea how one would go about all this of course but with the development of the virtual sound card it appears to open up all sorts of possibilities for the integration of weak (and not so weak) signal digital modes within the SDR consul without having to worry about additional soundcards, numerous cables and 3rd party software etc. Anyway, just my thoughts on a cloudy Saturday morning :-) Trevor G0KTN
Re: [Flexradio] Roadmap B list
It is definitely pencilled in for the future Thanks for the confirmation Bob, much appreciated. Phil: I see a reply from you but for some reason I'm unable to decode it - would you care to post it again in plain text VHJldm9yLAoKSSBzdGFydGVkIHRvIGxvb2sgaW50byB0aGlzIHVzaW5nIHRoZSBzb3Vy Y2UgZXhh bXBsZSB0aGF0IE1pY3Jvc29mdAppbmNsdWRlcyBpbiB0aGUgRERLIGNhbGxlZCBNU1Z BRC4gIEl0 Trevor G0KTN
Re: [Flexradio] Converting MP3 to Wav for SDR
Eric/Ken, thanks for the reply. Clearly, in my enthusiasm to see what the SDR cutting edge dsp software could do with a wav recording from another rig, I forgot all about the IQ requirement :-) Eric: Are you saying that the ability to play a wav file (recorded off-air from another rig) through the SDR consul might actually be a possibility sometime in the future?
