[Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Dave Sublette

Good morning,

I subscribed to this list because I am considering a Flex-radio for my
next purchase. I'm wondering if my present computer is adequate. I am
running Windows 7/64 bit on a Mac-Mini. Yes, I am one of those. I
believe the Mac hardware runs Windows faster and more reliably than does
the PC hardware. No, I'm not trying to start a discussion about this
concept. I just want to know if I can run the radio with it.,

Thanks 73,

Dave, K4TO

Dave, I am no expert but I would just try it and see what happens. If it
does not work then buy a cheep PC and have fun.

The PC I used on my Flex 3000 I paid $50.00 at a hamfest, it's a used
Dell Optiplex GX620 with two gigs rams, works perfect. In fact every PC
I own I bought used at hamfests paying no more than $75.00 been doing
this for years. It's not a matter of money, I can buy anything I want,
it's just a matter of if a $50.00 PC works great why spend 2K

I know two guys around two here that custom built PC just for their Flex
radios and spent a ton of money, and the bottom line my $50.00 used PC
does the same thing..

Re: [Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Geep Howell
There are a number of people on the list who run Mac equipment without issue.
I am sure some of them will respond to you, but I believe you will be fine as
long as you are running Boot Camp. Parallels does not work with the Flex
software. While I run Macs here, I have not run any of the Flex radios on a
Mac box, I use one of Neal Campbell's custom built machines that has extremely
low latency. That is the key to successfully running PowerSDR, the higher the
latency, the worse experience you will have. You can look through the archives
for Mac comments, there have been many.

You might also want to check the newest user community for all Flex radios at

Re: [Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Jim Jannuzzo
Dave,
Macs are often superb platforms for PowerSDR.
Two threshold requirements for a PC to run PowerSDR: It has to be able to run
a Firewire connection, and it has to have low to moderate DPC latency.
To check on the latency of your PC, download DPC LAT.exe from www.thesycon.de
If your latency is less than 500us, you're fine to run PSDR. If it's between
500 and 1000, you Should see which driver(s) or other programs are mucking up
your works. If it's over 1000, you Must track down and kill offending
programs.
Get the baseline numbers, and let's hear back from you.

i've been gone all morning and when I returned there were several useful
suggestions. I will go check latency and report back. Many thanks,

Re: [Flexradio] New subscriber__ computer question

2014-01-31 Thread Michael Babineau
Dave :

With my Flex-1500 I had been successfully running Powersdr on a late-2009
Uni-Body Macbook with WIN 7 32-bit, until i bought a dedicated quad-core PC
laptop for
for Ham Radio use. I’m assuming that your Mini is at least a dual-core (Intel
Core Solo Mini’s are quite rare) so you should be fine.

One of the reasons that Macs run Windows quit well is that you can’t buy a Mac
with Windows pre installed, so you have to do a clean install. You don't
end up with all of the software junk that the computer vendors include with new
PCs. Also I think that the Mac Windows drivers are quite good, so Mac's make a
decent
and stable platform to run Windows.

Which Flex Radio are you thinking of ?

Cheers

Per Jim's request and help, I have run the latency test and my machine
runs at 250-300 us latency. Thanks Jim. Looks like I'm good to go.
