Re: [Flexradio] Transverter

2015-12-17 Thread John Ferrell
I like my Flex500A but this is one of the areas that is especially
disappointing. There are no real benefits when using the transverter.
You cannot even tune NOAA weather. Bandwidth controls are ineffective.
If you are happy just being a a user all is well. If you are an
experimenter hoping for a tunable IF as you work your way up, it is not
in this box. Drop back to SoftRock and restart.
If you are a contester the tools provided in the Flex still look great
to me.

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter Store

2015-12-17 Thread Molnar, George J
Agree with Ged, the Transverter Store products not "bad" units, but are
not as good as they could be. I bought one to get my feet wet using a
transverter on my 6500. After alignment, it performed reasonably well,
but had quite a lot of "birdies" in the received signal.

Quickly went to an Elecraft on 432 with much better results. Liked it so
much, I am now building a 144XV.

If someone would like an assembled 432 Transverter Store unit, make me
an offer!

I'll try again

Hi Jeff,

I've been successfully running my 5000 with an ME2T-Pro 2m transverter on EME
for the past 2 years.

If you ever need any advice or information on how to set this up and use a
transverter on your 5000, you are welcome to give me a shout.

Fantastic RX performance on 2M with all the Flex operating, filtering and
tuning advantages.

Might be ok for SSB/CW work but I do not see an TCXO or oven option, etc
so I would be fearful of trying one on 2m or 432 for any digital work

I have both. Define "much better". They are both good quality. The Elecraft is
as expensive and a kit. It has far more possibilities of IF power control from
1mw to 8 watts of drive. Auto band changing if you have a K3. I could go on.
The Demi is a good unit but locked in at one drive level unless later modified.
Neither receiver is appreciably better than the other. The Demi has a heat sink
but it should cause it has 60 watts output. The Elecraft has 20 watts and
choice of oven temp osc. Mine is as stable if not more than my Demi. I dismiss
the notion that an oven temp Elecraft drifts. I have two of both and each
fulfill their purpose beautifully.

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter for Flex 6300

2015-08-01 Thread Bill Tynan
Mike:

I don't know much about the Elacaraft transverters, but I have had experience
with DEMI units. I have both their 222 and 1296 units in operation and 2304,
3456 and 10 GHz in a box ready to go up on the mast. I did have the 2304 and
3456 units up on the tower in separate boxes but now I'm ready to put the box
up with all three, 2304, 3456 and 10 GHz.

I've used the 222 unit quite a bit but I am just beginning to use the 1296
unit. I only made a couple QSOs with it, but it works. It puts out 50 W. The
222 MHz unit can put out 25 W but I have it down to 10 W to drive a brick amp.

I have been told that the Elacraft units run fairly hot and I can tell you from
receiving stations that have them that they drift. The DEMI units are solid as
a rock.

DEMI transverters can be had completed or in kit form. Mine were completed.

So, that's what I know. I hope this helps.

Hope to work you on the bands someday.

Bill Tynan, W3XO/5 EM00kd

Don’t forget the Elecraft line of transverters. They have a little lower pwr
output but just fine for running solid state amps. I’ve had good experience

kw amp on 2M. They’re also good on FM if that’s you’re cup of tea.

If you plan on getting involved in weak signal digital work, be sure the
transverter you decide on has good freq. stability…..both the DEMI and Elecraft

Good luck on your decision.

My Flex 5000 Operators Manual says the XVTX/COM ports outputs up to

Does anyone know the spec power output for the transverter port? I cannot find
it in the manual and previous perusal of the Knowledge Center for transverter

Thanks very much for any help.

You can but if the transverter doesn't include TX/RX switching, you will
need to use an external coax relay to switch. You may also need a
high-power pad to reduce the output to a safe level for the transverter
input. When turned down to less than 10W output the output of the 3000 is
very clean due to running class-A at those power levels.

As far as I am concerned, the only two things the 3000 lacks that keep it
from being the perfect radio are separate RX input and external reference
input.

What is to ask? Connect the output of your receiving converter (or the RX
output of your transverter) to RX2-In and it will work just fine. VFO-B
will tune RX2 like it normally does. Neither VFO-B nor RX2 care about the
source of signal at the RX2 input.

XVTX/COM outputs a 28 MHz IF signal, adjustable up to +5 dBm to drive

Calculate or use one of the many Internet conversion charts.

Per http://www.minicircuits.com/pages/pdfs/dg03-110.pdf

This is 3.2 mW maximum. That is rounded to the nearest .1 mW.

The FLEX-3000 does not have a dedicated low power 10m output like the

over drive the transverter. Otherwise you can use the transverter form

None of the Flex radios will transmit outside the ham bands using their PA
output unless unlocked. Both the 5000 and 1500 have low-level (0dBm -- 1mW)
outputs in addition to their PA outputs. Both the 5000 and 1500 will provide

You can purchase one as a kit from Elecraft. The directions are pretty
straight forward but does require winding one coil and soldering
carefully. Elecraft makes 144, 220, and 432MHz units.

Down East Microwave has either a kit version or built up transverters.
I have no idea what their delivery schedule is. They have transverters
that go up to 1296MHz that go directly to 28MHz.

SSB Electronics sells a German transverter made by Kuhne Electronics
that is very nice but it is priced accordingly.

The DX Zone has this link for transverters:

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter form and RX only

2010-06-17 Thread kr7o
I will put in a request Gerald. Wasn't sure if it was a bug in my older
version or something that will already be included in 2.0. I did some
searching and didn't find anything about this issue. Can't keep up with
the traffic on this reflector, let alone the flex-edge to see what is up
and coming. The transverter power level issue is an important one.

Thanks for the QSY tip. I don't even keep my keyboard on the desk. It
leans against the wall and I pick it up if I need it, but good to know.

I haven't implemented DDUTIL yet, but need to. Guess I should post this
over on the yahoo group.

I copied some of the other guys so they would see the request. We have
three 10 band VHF through microwave rover guys that work for FlexRadio.

[Flexradio] Transverter Output Level Adj

2010-06-11 Thread NJSCAN
Hopefully someone on this list is running a Transverter with their 5000 and
Vers 2.0. (I also posted this in the edge reflector)

Trying to run a Microwave Module 144/28R Xvtr. for this weekends VHF contest.
According to the manual (for 1.18) the Xvtr out can be adjusted up to +5 dbm.

I'm unable to find where this adjustment can be made. The Power setting in the
transverter screen only sets the Tune level to the connsole.

With the Drive set to 100, max output from the transverter is barely -17 dbm,
not nearly enough to drive the transverter to full output. This tells me there
has to be some hidden setting that can be increased up to the +5 dbm spec.

Has anyone discovered where this illusive setting might be? Tried FRS Support
and they have done their best, but I suspect they are also scratching their
heads.

I just upgraded from 1.18.3 to 1.18.4 (Firmware 1.3.0.8, Firewire
3.5.0.7171, both unchanged). If I have a transverter band (VHF0 in this

audio when I restart PowerSDR. I must either deselect NR and change bands
to get audio started. Once audio is working I can reselect NR or switch
back to VHF0 and all is fine. I checked 1.18.3 and this doesn't happen in
that version.

Anyone else seeing this?

back to VHF0 and all is fine. I checked 1.18.3 and this doesn't happen in
that version.

[Flexradio] Transverter RX Audio bug in 1.18.4?

2010-02-10 Thread Clay W7CE
I just upgraded from 1.18.3 to 1.18.4 (Firmware 1.3.0.8, Firewire
3.5.0.7171, both unchanged). If I have a transverter band (VHF0 in this
case) selected and NR selected, and then shut down PowerSDR, there is no RX
audio when I restart PowerSDR. I must either deselect NR and change bands
to get audio started. Once audio is working I can reselect NR or switch
back to VHF0 and all is fine. I checked 1.18.3 and this doesn't happen in

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter port questions

2009-12-12 Thread N4PY2

I run 144 and 432 transverters here.

You get 5 dbm when you set the transverter power output to 100.
5 dbm is 3.2 mW.

Can someone confirm the 5dBm RF output level at the dedicated transverter

What does 5dBm correspond to in the 0-100 setting in the XVRTs Form

Is there a more thorough breakdown of the transverter settings, as well as

[Flexradio] TRANSVERTER & FLEX3000

2009-12-02 Thread Anthony M
Hi Guys,

Has anyone tried a Transverter with a Flex radio? I am wondering if so, what
type? How well do they work with powerSDR?
It seems like the ideal solution for me..

Re: [Flexradio] transverter question

2009-05-04 Thread Roger Rehr

Gary et al,

I use 70 microwatts from my flex 5000 [and my FT1000MP and my K3] to
drive my transverters. Outputs measured multiple times with a couple
of HP probes as well as a Boonton...all agree within a few percent. I
know this well because I swap the rigs in and out and I always set the
output to this level so I don't need to readjust all the transverters

For those transverters that have taken more oomph, I use a MAR-x to
boost the signal.

This was sort of 'midrange' output for the 1000, which was the index
rig here and so determined the 'standard' level.

This is not the max that the 5000 will put out. But the points I am
making are:
[1] you don't need a lot of power out [use a MAR-x if its too low for
your xvtrs]

[2] the flex is not alone in terms of the level of its power out
[3] 0.5 watts out is in my [limited] experience unusual for a
transverter port on a modern rig.

I'd suggest measuring what you actually get out of the flex with a
good hp or boonton meter.

I can't give more details at present as I am separated from my notes
and equipment at present due to work demands.

The Panadaptor drops 10 DB. The SDR radio and the transverter keys

when I click tune. If I turn the SDR radio drive to 100 %. I get .2
watts out of the transverter. That is not normal. Now if I put a 3
DB pad on the HF port and set the radio to 1 watt. The transverter
will put out full power. The transverter has a pot to control the
input of the RF. I have to turn it so I don't over drive the
transverter. This is the same transverter that Dave, W5UN also uses.
I use to transmit with it using the SDR-1000 and it worked fine then.

The output from the transverter port is very low 1.0 mW.

Also make sure that PowerSDR isn't configured for RX only (or PTT

What RF drive level is the transverter expecting?

I download the new version 1.18.0. The latest firewire_driver and also
firmware 1.3.0.0. My LT 2 S MK transverter is set up to run split. I have
used it for years for receive only and works fine. Now I want to use it to
transmit also to use for my main system. I do not have RX only checked or the
PTT checked. When I check the Split RF box in XVTR Setup.
The Panadaptor drops 10 DB. The SDR radio and the transverter keys up when I
click tune. If I turn the SDR radio drive to 100 %. I get .2 watts out of the
transverter. That is not normal. Now if I put a 3 DB pad on the HF port and
set the radio to 1 watt. The transverter will put out full power. The
transverter has a pot to control the input of the RF. I have to turn it so I
don't over drive the transverter. This is the same transverter that Dave, W5UN
also uses. I use to transmit with it using the SDR-1000 and it worked fine
then. Any help would be appreciated.

The output from the transverter port is very low 1.0 mW.

Also make sure that PowerSDR isn't configured for RX only (or PTT disabled).

EBay is a good place to look, for lack of anything better - that's where I
got my 8-port SMA switch for less than $50 (and I know that some folks
will cry foul and say I paid too much, but I got exactly what I wanted,
when I wanted it, for a price I could live with - after all, they're about
$1300 or more new these days). You just need to keep looking until you
find what you want at a price you're willing to live with.

> How are you controlling the switching network?

Working on it (back-of-the-napkin phase):

I plan to adapt most of the elements of K8ISK's "MOASU" transverter
switching unit from "The World Above 50 MHz" column by W3ZZ in the March &
April '08 QSTs. To that design will be added additional non-RF relays to
accommodate integration with VE2ZAZ's 6-step 'The "At Last!" Radio TR
Sequencer' from March 2007 QST (the MOASU uses a 4-step sequencer).

It will be controlled via the PC parallel port by way of K5FR's "DDUtil"
(Data Decoder Utility) - assuming that I'm interpreting how DDUtil ties in
with PowerSDR correctly. I'll also add a manual bandswitch for the odd
occasion when I want to try the lashup with something other than the
5000A.

If all goes like I think it should, things should mimic what Mike, KM0T,
has done with his SDR-1000 plus UCB setup.

Hi Gang:
This question is for the people using the FLEX-5000A with transverters.
What are you using to switch the REC and XMT (28 MHz) to each
transverter? I know Mike is using a multi SMA relay one in and several
feed outputs.
What I plan on doing is using separate REC and XMT out of the 5000A to
some coax switches (2) to the input REC and XMT of the transverters.
Where can I locate two switches to do the job?
How are you controlling the switching network?

Now that you mention it, yes I do.
I have been using v1.8.0 with the first 6 transverter slots defined.
They all work fine, using a K3TUF UCB to drive the external selections.
When I enabled a 7th button, selecting it always goes to button 1
instead. Looking at the UCB lights it looks just like my #1
configuration. The UCB works on all selections for HF, and as a test
I've set the UCB addresses to match on the transverter setup, so I doubt
that is the problem.

I just tried this with v1.10.3, and now I can only define two
transverter slots.

I have playing mostly HF recently, so didn't notice this issue, but it
looks like I'll have to drop back to 1.8 if I want to go VHF+.

I'll be interested to see what the response may be.

[Flexradio] Transverter Problems

2008-01-28 Thread Bill Bailey
After defining a fourth transverter some weird things happen. Every time I
click on the fourth transverter button, the third transverter button is
highlighted in YELLOW. I expect the fourth transverter button to be
highlighted in YELLOW instead. It is unclear if the 4th or the 3rd
transverter is really selected when trying to select transverter 4.

I believe this behavior exists in both PowerSDR 1.10.3 AND 1.10.4.

Has anyone seen this problem?

Hello Ray,

If you're using WinXP or higher you should try to go back to an earlier restore
point. If the restore point works then the hardware should be fine. If not then
you my have a hardware problem (or firmware). Try that first and then report

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter Keying

2007-11-07 Thread Ken N0GZ
Hi Roger,

Thanks for the reply. I am using "Antenna Selection" expert mode and
have set the "Switch Relay with TR" options for TX2 on all HF bands to
key my HF linear; TX3 for 50M to key my 50 MHz linear; and would like
to use TX1 to key the transverters. My transverter page is set up
correctly. There does not seem to be any way to associate the
transverters specified in expert mode with a particular TX(n) selection.

I suspect the difference from what you are doing is my use of "expert
mode". What mode are you using?

Thanks and 73,

Hi Ken,
I have the same problem. I just replaced the RFIO board in the Flex5000
and I can now see output power from the XVTX/COM port, just on VHF 1
only, nothing from VHF 2. If you find out something, let me know also. I
believe W3SZ got his T/R to work.

Hi All,

Has anybody figured out to to configure the Flex 5000 for keying one or
more transverters connected through the VXTX/VXRX connectors? I have
not found anything in the PowerSDR documentation, and tech support has
not been able to help so far. None of the AMP RLY outputs seem to
activate (pull down) when a transverter is selected. I can receive OK

Please, NO! We've already gone the route of blocking of cell phone
frequencies on scanners: a change from 'you can listen to anything, just
can't tell anyone'; blocking 10M on linears for fear of CB use; the RIAA
wanting to ban sales of A/D converters, FCC conferences on SDR-lucklily
defended by Bob and Flex. Our nearby town had an open policy on towers
until someone's atty. suggested a clarification of the policy before
putting up a new one: now the limit is 35 ft.

My second rig was built without help in 1953 on 1X2 wood rails from the
ARRL handbook. Entire metering available consisted of panel bulbs in
series with the plate circuits and open wire antenna leads, if you don't
count the #2 pencil I drew arcs off with to see if there really was RF
there. The first was a model A coil and a Lionel train transformer built
from a Tom Swift book, but we won't go there.

This is a case of: "It easier to get forgiveness than permission". Let's
continue to stay out of trouble and under the radar with present policy.
Or we will swiftly have problems.

For hams building their own equipment, there's no real requirement to
prevent out of band transmissions by automatic means. The FCC trusts
licensed hams to only turn the knob where they should. Likewise,
bona-fide R&D work can radiate incidentally (but you DO have to be
careful.. no experimenting with 1kW output amplifiers into antennas
without the appropriate Part 5 license)

The non-trivially-modifiable-hardware/firmware kinds of requirements
apply to equipment offered for sale.

This puts folks like Flex-radio in the position of providing a means
to restrict certain kinds of operation (out of band transmit,
scanning on receive), but there's no reason why someone can't freely
modify the widget to do this. In the case of PowerSDR, I presume
that it would simply require modification of some configuration
tables (since the band limits are different in various parts of the
world, they can't be embedded in the "code" which is the same for
all). I suggest then, that a bit of tinkering with MS Access would
reveal all and let you configure the system as needed for your
particular transverters.

It's a bit trickier for the 5K (given that there's a closed firmware
component) but I suspect that there are ways to do it. Flex can
probably supply the needed information if you can show a legitimate
need. Or, it might be embedded in PowerSDR.

Interestingly, hams just have to use good engineering practice, and
aren't required to demonstrate compliance, so, while it's nice to
have test equipment with traceable calibration, it's not legally
required. You can't be careless and cavalier, so if you want to try
and skate close to the edge, a note to Riley Hollingsworth to explore
the enforcement standards for "good engineering practice" might be useful.

(But, my cat's whisker and galena crystal didn't indicate any out of
band emissions.. Why did I receive a citation? )

Re: [Flexradio] transverter operation question

2007-07-22 Thread Philip M. Lanese
Mark,

No, I am NOT using the DEMI transverter and I can not legally provide such
information.

In fact, I have so highly modified my SDR to be an IF system for my transverters
ONLY, that it can no longer operate with anything except my home brew
transverters.

I have designed circuits into my system that restrict out-of-intended-band
emissions to less than that allowed for "Unlicensed" type equipment (including
the FM portion of 2M) and I am fortunate to have the equipment and facilities
here to LEGALLY VERIFY compliance with FCC regulations 24/7.

This was a concern of mine with my early production 1K because of the EIRP I can
produce on VHF/UHF/MW. It is ALSO a major concern of the FCC regarding Software
Defined radios in general, as has been discussed on this reflector in the past
few weeks.

Having been in Flex's position in the past, I understand the predicament. But,
as the saying goes, if you don't ask

[Flexradio] transverter operation question

2007-07-21 Thread Roger Rehr
Hello, All,

I have been using my SDR-1000 for weak signal VHF-and-up work.

I want to use it also in the FM Simplex portions of some of the
VHF-and-up bands. Because of the LO frequencies of my transverters,
this will require that the SDR-1000 operate slightly out of the 28-30
MHz band.

For example, for 146.58 MHz FM Simplex I will need to operate the
SDR-1000 at 30.58 MHz.

Will PowerSDR and the SDR1000 allow both transmit and receive on this
frequency as long as I properly fill in the XVTR Setup Form to include
LO offset 116 MHz and Begin Freq 144 and End Freq 148?

I am asking this question on the list rather than just 'trying it'
because my SDR-1000 and transverters are at a remote site and I may not
be able to get out there for several weeks. Knowing the answer now
will help my planning, so that I can be more productive when I actually
DO get out to the remote site.

Also, I will be interested in what the answer is for this question for
the Flex-5000, as that should be arriving soon ;)

Thanks in advance, and

73,

Re: [Flexradio] Transverter offset

2005-08-04 Thread Lawrence Stoskopf
Not sure how Ham Radio Deluxe does it, but you just enter the offset for
whatever frequency you dial to (after setting up the offset bands) and then
whenever you "tune to that frequency, it applies that offset. So you can
use one of the various signal sources to find the error for that band, a
quick calculation and you plug that offset in. That automatically takes
care of whatever error the system has (until you drift!)

Easier than my remarks. Should be easy to implement.

[Flexradio] TRANSVERTER LLOCAL OSCILLATOR/SDR1000 CALIBRATION

2005-08-03 Thread Philip M. Lanese
FWIW, I first calibrate my SDR1000 at 28.150.000 with my HP 8640B locked to my
Ru source. Then I calibrate the 2 Meter to 28 MHz transverter/SDR1000
combination by injecting a signal at 144,150,000.00 with the 8640B and
re-adjusting the /GENERAL/Calibration/Frequency = 28.150.000, Clock Offset
value, if necessary, to place the signal peak exactly on the center vertical
line using AM or DSB, SPECTRUM display and 100, 50 then 25 Hz band width.

The caveat is that the 116 MHz oscillator I use (6 yr. old prototype) is my own
TCXO design, heavily subsidized by an employer from a former life, and has not
had to be adjusted for the last two years, drifting only +/- 2-3 cycles short
term after warm-up.

This method takes care of Jim's steps 1 and 2 but not 3.
