Re: [Flexradio] Looking for Anyone using a SPE solid-state amp with a Flex Radio
Steve, you might try checking the Limit Skew checkbox in the Transmit tab of PSDR and see if that helps. It was put there to solve the problem where the radios would trigger the amp's protection at the end of transmitting so it might help you also. 73 -- Original Message -- From: Steve Floyd w4...@yahoo.com To: Flex Radio flexradio@flex-radio.biz Sent: 8/25/2013 3:15:51 PM Subject: [Flexradio] Looking for Anyone using a SPE solid-state amp with a Flex Radio Greetings, I am looking to contact anyone who is using a SPE solid-state amp with a Flex 5K (or Flex 3K) radio. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for Anyone using a SPE solid-state amp with a Flex Radio
Question: Flex-1500- Trying to hook up to amps in series. A solid state qrp amp--5 in and 100 watts out into a A811H-- 100 in and 600 watts out. I am using RF sensing from the 1500 into the qrp amp and then going into the Al-811H. The 811H is keyed with relay cable from the 1500. I am getting clipping in my audio. Someone said the reason that is happening is because I am feeding a solid state amp into a tubed amp. If I had two solid state amps, that would not happen. Is there any remedy for this?? Re: [Flexradio] Looking for Anyone using a SPE solid-state amp with a Flex Radio
Hi Folks, The problem my friend is having with the Flex 5000 and the SPE 1K-FA amp is as follows: When the Flex 5K is keyed in any output mode, on any band, the SPE amp goes to 160 m band as the first detected input frequency and sets itself for operation on that band. Then when RF drive comes along on say 20 m, the amp faults due to wrong band set, and the antenna is not for 160 m. The Flex 5K was sent back to Flexradio for checkout and there is a 160 m low level output that does come up first, however it is way below FCC approved spurious output limits and deemed normal by Flexradio. Clearly the input sensitivity of the frequency measuring circuit in the SPE 1K-FA is very high. DDutil is being used to send band data from the Flex to the amp, however SPE keeps the input RF frequency measuring circuit active always and its detection overrides the DDutil input band data. Is there anyone out there that is successfully using a Flex5000 with the SPE 1K-FA amp??? Mark, You can do that to a limited extent (within the spectrum already showing on the screen) in PSDR, but it's almost a six of one half dozen of another kind of thing. It's different, and may only be marginally better or worse depending on your preferences. Both are good. Re: [Flexradio] Looking to buy a 1500 and for some advice
Thanks for the input guys! I can't take anything that looks like a radio, it could cause problems with some of the places I go. My thought behind wanting a 1500 is that it looks like a portable hard drive and is pretty small and light. Also, I was thinking that the cost of a used 1500 plus a used amp would be hundreds cheaper than the cost of a 3000. As far as a tuner, my thought was that I wouldn't need one. I'd take a resonate antenna cut specifically for a small portion of the 40 meter band. This setup would be CW only. As far as lugging a computer - I have to take a laptop with me anyway. I edit my photography and video while in the field plus I use it to run the BGAN satellite modem which is my primary means to communicate with the world. (check out my website to see what I do: http://eyesofman.org) The purpose of all this is to have a backup in case the BGAN goes down or I'm in a place where it doesn't have line of site to its bird. I plan on teaming with a few HAMs here in the states with big gun stations (ie, nice beams) to have regularly scheduled QSOs saying where I at, what's happening, etc... ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flexradio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flexradio.com/

Kevin: Not to denigrate the F:EX ( I am waiting on a 5000) but as one who has trouble finding open spaces in the passport for new visa stamps, may I suggest you look at the Yaesu FT-857, or similar. This, in the size of a book, gives 100 watts on all modes, all bands, and you do not need a laptop unless you are running digital. You do need 12V. In most travel situations, I get that with a jumper cable hooked to a car battery, with the other end modified with a connector to the radio. By the way, on the beach, I run from 8 AM to 4PM with just a 50 AH battery that I charge up at night. Re: [Flexradio] Looking to buy a 1500 and for some advice
I have to agree with Lester - an FT-857D is the easiest package. Taking a computer, radio, amp, tuner, etc will be a major PITA. A ruggedized laptop (I use a Panasonic ToughBook CF-30 MK.2) and a Flex 3000 would be the best Flex setup, but that needs 13.8V for the Flex and 120V or a voltage booster for the laptop. Re: [Flexradio] Looking to buy a 1500 and for some advice
To make the 1500 do what you want, you will need to buy an amp and a tuner. The cost of those two additional items equals or exceeds the cost of a 3000, and the 3000 has a better receiver. I've seen a lot of new hams start out with a marginal setup, then get discouraged because it is hard to make contacts. Some people love the challenge, have big antennas to make up for the low power, etc. But starting out, a nice 100 watt rig is a great starting experience. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for help on interface between 5K and SteppIR
Hi Larry, I will be faced with the same problem. Hopefully I'll be getting my DB18E up in the air sometime toward the end of August. I use DDUtil, and plan on using it for the Steppir. I am hoping that I can use a USB to serial converter for the Steppir. I have heard various successful / unsuccessful stories about the converters, so I may finally have to break down and install another physical serial port in my computer. I'll be interested in how you make out with your installation. 73 Chris, KA1GEU -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Larry Bryan Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2012 9:51 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] Looking for help on interface between 5K and SteppIR control At Dayton I purchased the DB18E SteppIR antenna and the SDA100 control panel. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for help on interface between 5K and SteppIR control
Larry,I bought a cable from SteppIR. After looking at its connections, I cut the ends off, soldered on two new ends, and was satisfied. This indicates my prior level of satisfaction with my purchase of the SteppIR cable. I second the use of DDutil. Besides just following the band and frequency like the connection to PowerSDR without using DDutil, DDu adds control of all of SDA100's features except on and off. It adds the transmit inhibited function in software, rather than having to buy an additional SDA100 card for about $70. Once you learn DDu's functionality, you can also control many of your rotor(s), amp(s), logging program(s), digital mode program(s), and other shack items., and you can even do it remotely. Without DDu, you can only receive radio control commands from one source, and you'd need a Y cable to send it to another source. Y cables are ugly, nasty things. DDu is incredibly well supported, and free. If you have any soldering ability ( I do not, but I did it anyway) the connections for a null modem cable in this useage are pin 2 on end #1 to pin 3 on the other end, and pin 3 on end number 1 to 3 on the other end. Pins 5 and 5 are also connected. You do not jumper pins 7 and 9 on one end in this application. The cable when not using DDU may be different. With this null cable and DDu, you plug the cable into the bottom DD9 plug on the back of the SDA 100. (If you were to go direct without DDU, you'd plug into the top connector)_ The downside is that DDu adds another level of complexity to the already steep learning curve of switching to the PowerSDR ergonomics. If I may be so bold, why not manually control the SteppIR while you learn PSDR, the new SteppIR, VSP manager, VAC, and all the other things that can be seamlessly integrated into the Flex' operation? DDu has an excellent Yahoo group, like Flex. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for help on interface between 5K and SteppIR control
Larry You really only need a 3 wire null modem cable to go between the Computer and the Steppir box. Then, in the Steppir controller, indicate you are using a Kenwood rig and set the speed to whatever you use for that port. Then, the problem is to send the CAT information from PowerSDR to the serial port that you will be connecting the null modem cable to. There are several solutions. The most common is to use DDUtil which is a utility that can connect to PowerSdR and do amazing things with the CAT info. Second idea is to use Virtual Serial Port Emulator, a program from Eterlogic and copy the output from the CAT port to the physical port you have connected the null modem cable to. I am sure there are other ways to bridge the output from PowerSDR to the serial port (an easy one is just to assign that as your CAT output port).' All this sounds much more complicated than it really is! I believe you can buy a null modem cable from Steppi's website that will work, I have a customer who did that and it worked fine. 73 Neal -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Larry Bryan Sent: Thursday, June 07, 2012 9:51 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] Looking for help on interface between 5K and SteppIR control At Dayton I purchased the DB18E SteppIR antenna and the SDA100 control panel. [Flexradio] Looking back
Like some other people who use the Flex radios, I have been occasionally confused and frustrated leading me to occasionally berate Flex, usually but not always privately. But a few days ago an event showed me why I would not even consider replacing an of my Flex radios. I was at the Dominican Amateur Radio Club (DARC) station, sitting and waiting for some of the other members to arrive so we could do some work on the new repeater we are going to have to backpack to the top of a mountain. While waiting I idly flipped on the Club's Kenwood TS-940S/AT and started tuning around. One of the first things I noticed was that I was not hearing the clear and precise audio I was used to. Frankly, no amount of fiddling with filters and/or passband tuning could make this radio sound good to me. And here is the thing -- the Kenwood TS-940S/AT is a popular and credible radio that still to this day receives good reviews. So why is that? In addition I realize that I have stopped using our school's Elecraft K2 for much the same reason but I couldn't really put my finger on why until now. Yes, the panadaptor and click-tune are nice but the bottom line is, the receiver in the Flex 5000 and Flex 3000 is just SO MUCH BETTER that it isn't really a horse race. The I/Q receiver topology that doesn't have to pass the signal through a crystal filter just flat-out produces a better signal at the output. BTW, I plan to operate from the DARC clubhouse so I can use their multiband Yagi. I plan to take the Flex 3000 and use it instead of the Kenwood. ;-) -- Brian Lloyd, WB6RQN/J79BPL 3191 Western Dr. Cameron Park, CA 95682 br...@lloyd.com +1.767.617.1365 (Dominica) +1.931.492.6776 (USA) (+1.931.4.WB6RQN) ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/

[Flexradio] Looking for FLEX Users that Have Been Successful on WINMOR using RMS Express v. 0.0.3.0
Are there any FLEX Users who have had success with RMS Express v. 0.3.0.0? If so could you share your configuratation with me? Rick indicated that there are potential issues with WINMOR and FLEX radios. Specifically: Latency of the Flex receiver. Since RMS Express/WINMOR is a real time ARQ protocol additional latency (delay) introduced by the receiver (or transmitter) can cause a problem with the protocol. This can probably be corrected (at the expense of throughput) by inserting additional delays for such installations. The latency I am describing is the actual delay from RF in to audio out and this can be considerable depending on filter selections and CPU Speed. Version 0.3.0.0 has an additional 500 ms delay added the repeat timer to handle most of these problems. CPU Loading. I have seen one FLEX user's CPU usage at 65% or higher and the high pulse CPU Loading of WINMOR during decoding could cause decoding delays if the FLEX software is using a high percentage of CPU cycles and a high priority thread. The only solution in this case may be a faster CPU or a multiple core CPU that can partition out the FLEX and RMS Express applications to separate cores. You might try and see if you can run the FLEX software at a normal or below normal priority using Task Manager. A normal forwarding exchange without traffic pending is on the order of 55 bytes sent and 55 bytes received +/-. If you make a connection and see this kind of information and the session ends normally it is a normal empty forwarding session. On a decent connection this will take on the order of 30 seconds .longer if there are lots of retries. This means that neither end had messages queued (posted to their outbox) addressed specifically to the other call sign. Read the HELP on addressing.you cannot use multiple addresses in a peer to peer message.only a single address to the call sign you are connecting to. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for FLEX Users that Have Been Successful on WINMOR using RMS Express v. 0.0.3.0
I am not familiar with RMS Express, but when timing is critical, make sure that the buffers between PowerSDR/ VAC / Application are set up correctly. Buffer over/under runs can cost time and CPU cycle times.. Maybe someone else has some actual RMS Express experience that can help. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ Allen Shuff wrote: Are there any FLEX Users who have had success with RMS Express v. 0.3.0.0? Re: [Flexradio] Looking for suggestion about a rtty starting anomaly
Joe I hope I can help you. First off, I use MMTTY in DXLabs Suite module called WinWarbler. I can also use it in N1MM contest program. Plus it works quite well as a standalone MMTTY version. It's just a matter of telling each of these routes to use VAC as the sound card. For Instance In PWSDR VAC is set to: Driver: Windows WDM-KS Input: VAC 1 Output: VAC 2 In WinWarbler, Soundcard is set to VAC But Transmission goes to VAC input which is PWSDR VAC1 RTTY Reception goes to VAC output which is PWSDR VAC2 In MMTTY setup, TX is set to PTTFSK com port Com8 This requires a com0com pair of com 22 equals com 8 With PWSDR Cat Control PTT being set to com 22 If just using MMTTY in a standalone system. I'm using MMTTY version 1.66G. Again Soundcard Reception is VAC2 and Soundcard Transmission is VAC1. And on the TX tab, PTTFSK is the same, set to com8. Using Writelog, you need the MMTTY module, same setup. Using N1mm, again, same soundcard, same com port. Good luck, contact me offlist if you need help. It's not long but definetly detectable. The more times I call, then listen, the longer this delay becomes. I've tried different virtual com port programs. I've tried different programs to manage the rtty operation. I've used different instances of MMTTY from different directories. It was EXTREMELY apparent this afternoon as I tried to work FT5GA on 20 meter RTTY. Cure; Simply shutting down PWSDR and restarting eliminated the delay between Key strike and diddle beginning. I've experienced this with various versions of PWSDR, firmware and drivers. Currently using: PWSDR Test Branch, svn 3377, Firmware 2.0.0.0, Driver 3.4.2.6300, Latest version of VAC. My DPC's are minimal, And there is no delay using the same system to send CW either via WinWarbler or Flex internal keyer and direct from paddles. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for suggestion about a rtty starting anomaly
First off, you are using an experimental version of PowerSDR, so this post is best suited for the FlexEdge reflector. Second, PowerSDR has no clue you are running RTTY, it is going to transmit what ever audio is passed to it via VAC and PTT is asserted (by CAT, I assume). The key is to find out if any of the RTTY message is truncated. If it isn't, then the delay is probably from the digi mode program. If it is, then there is a delay in PTT being asserted. I assume when you shut things down, you shut down the digi mode program too, because you should always start PowerSDR first enable digi mode which opens up the VAC channels and defines the cable properties (sampling rate and bit depth) before starting the digital mode program. It sounds like the macro buffer is not getting cleared. -Tim -Original Message- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of FireBrick Sent: Tuesday, September 22, 2009 9:29 PM To: flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: [Flexradio] Looking for suggestion about a rtty starting anomaly Ok guys, this is not a Flex problem but apparently somthing with my system. Re: [Flexradio] Looking for suggestion about a rtty starting anomaly
Bill, Does this occur with the released versions of PowerSDR? Sure sounds like MMTTY is not clearing it's buffer correctly. How about if you run another program instead? Also are you using CAT for keying? Personally I feel like I have better control if I use secondary Com ports to control the TX/RX . 73, Dudley WA5QPZ FireBrick wrote: Ok guys, this is not a Flex problem but apparently somthing with my system. I had Norton for a couple of years and found it to be horrible. It often tried to block *itself* from accessing the Internet for updates. At present I am using 5-User pack of Computer Associates Internet Security Suite Deluxe, which was free after a mail-in Competitive Upgrade rebate via CompUSA.com (which, like circuitcity.com, is now a subsidiary of Systemax). It seems better than Norton. My main problem is the scheduler, which is set to check for updates and then scan for viruses and spyware in the early hours of each morning but will often start scanning during the day while I am using the radio or doing other things. I do use that computer for things other than the radio, so spyware and tracking cookies are found from time to time. 73 Alan ___ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
