Re: [Flexradio] New user - Flex 6300

2015-11-02 Thread Larry Loen
Fred. another thing you might try is another engine. If you don't already
have it, you could try Fldigi, which is (as I recall) a free download. you
need to obtain a special XML file for the Flex to configure it (just google
for it). But, it is otherwise a relatively straightforward exercise. At
the least, there are fewer "moving parts" in the discussion for Fldigi.

I don't care if you every use Fldigi on the air; Not really advocating
that as such. I'm suggesting that if you worked with it, you might be able
to get it going and that would give you some big clues about how to do the
rest.

I have MixW2 (abandonware), Fldigi, and wsjt-x all running on mine. All
had their little issues to overcome. As I recall, though, it became easier
after the first one was working. I can even run MixW2 first and add one of
the others.

Particularly, I found it helpful to create a PTT port under CAT; Fldigi and
WSJT-X both seem to work better with that. MixW2 seems to make the "PTT as
CAT command" trick work. But, each software install was its own minor
adventure.

In my case (running an earlier SmartSDR) Tim had to come on to my system
and help me kill some dead ports. That was also screwing my little system
up. So, maybe your system has some history that needs to be overcome.
Once I got past that problem, it all became easier.

Hi Scott,

You will need a serial (or USB) to CI-V adapter and then use a 3rd party
program called DDUtil. The setup works great and I'll email you a pdf I
wrote on how to configure it.

If anyone else would like a copy of the pdf, please contact me directly.

Re: [Flexradio] New user in VK

2006-05-07 Thread Tim Ellison
Hey Paul,

First off, welcome to the club! The SDR1K is a great radio to operate
for so many reasons; I couldn't even start to describe them.

As for your question about microphones for the SDR, I'll offer my humble
opinion and I am sure many more will follow.

Let me preface my comments by saying that when properly connected, wired
and set up the SDR1K has just about the best sounding TX (and RX) audio
of any radio I have listened to no matter what microphone is used. This
is directly related to the fact that it uses high quality sound cards,
like the D44 and the Firebox for the audio input (and output) processing
and not a $2 IC that is incorporated in most YaeWoodCom rigs.

First off, there is the fact that the D44 does not have a mic preamp.
This really isn't a problem on two accounts. First, you can use a high
gain (output) mic and/or second PowerSDR can provide extra gain via
software to compensate for low mic levels if necessary. So you can use
what ever *type* of microphone you prefer.

Some people prefer to use an external mic preamp and not turn up the
software gain as high. I am one of those. If you do use an external
mic preamp, then that along with the type of mic used will directly
affect character of your sound. I believe that the SDR software does
not color the sound in any way, so the outboard hardware does make a
difference. Example: if you want a warm rich sound, there are many tube
(usually a 12AX7) preamps that can be used.

My choice was to use W2IHY's EQplus as my preamp/compressor/effect
processor/EQ. Julius's wonderful creation allows me to operate several
rigs using a single input audio chain with just a twist of a knob. I
set the EQplus one way and change the rig's setting so that they all
operate optimally with little or no change to any settings on the
EQplus.

Microphones. Here is where diversity reigns supreme. Put 10
audiophiles in a room and ask them what is the best microphone and you
will get 10 different answers before the fight breaks out (HI HI).
IMHO, there are only two types you should consider; dynamic and
condenser. Bob Heil makes a very good line of dynamic microphones. I
have one of his PR20 microphones and it sounds great. There are many
others too. I also have a wide diaphragm condenser microphone. It is a
Marshall MXL 990. I do not have to close talk it like the PR20 and
IMO, it has a smoother mellower sound that the PR20 at 1/3 the price. I
exclusively use the MXL 990 now, but I will not part with my PR20.

I have listened to very good sounding SDR1K audio from a cheap $5
computer mic. So what ever hardware you choose, you have so many audio
shaping tools in PowerSDR, that when properly set, you are going to
sound great.

I believe that the biggest challenge to great sounding audio no matter
what rig you use is making sure you audio chain is balanced, properly
grounded and isolated where necessary. If you use outboard audio
hardware, you need to pay close attention to ground loops and polarity.
I made changes to how the SDR1K was wired and used isolation
transformers to achieve that goal. There are several great web sites
describing how to do this (NU9N K4QKY just to mention two).

Whatever you choose, you can't go wrong.

Hi All

I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of SDR1000. I was lucky
enough
to source a 2nd hand 1 watt version its approx 12 months old so I guess
I am
going to have to find out if there any upgrades/fixes that will be
required.

I'm going to pair it up with a Delta 44 s/card that I'm waiting
for
from Flex Radio, so I guess one of my first questions is going to be
whose
in VK whose active that maybe once I have things going I can do some on
air
tests and get advice?..i'll have to look into getting more then 1 watt
out
so any advice from people will be greatly appreciated.

I guess my final dilemma will be what microphone to attach to
the
sdr1000..i have had a quick read of past posts but wonder if anyone has
a
website that explores best match microphones for sdr1000's?

I'm looking forward to experimenting and joining in with my
experiences with the sdr1000.

Paul,

Welcome to the group!

John, W5GI, is the resident audio expert and maybe he will chime in here
with some recomendations. From what I've read in his previous posts, almost
any mic will work.

What you may need to do is use a mic preamp. I don't run the Delta 44
anymore (I switched to the Firebox) but when I did, I used a cheap soundcard
(or you could use the motherboard sound) for a mic preamp.

I encourage you to use the resources in the Support menu at
http://www.flex-radio.com/. Lots of good info there.

73,

Bob, K5KDN
