Re: [Flightgear-devel] FSP facebook ads

2010-11-24 Thread Mally
?I doubt this is pay-per-click, so just clicking on the ads could be
ineffective or couter-effective. However the strategy of reporting the ads
is potentially a better one, particularly if enough people get involved

I've dispatched two ads this morning via the X button:

No 1 Flight Simulator

x False advertising: The acknowledged #1 flight simulator by any measure is
Microsoft Flight Simulator

(No offence intended against FlightGear, I'm sure there are measures against
which it is #1 but I wanted to present a clear argument, and besides, it was
a little impulsive I will admit).

New Flight Simulator

x False advertising: This is not a new flight simulator, but the
open-source flight simulator FlightGear which has been existence for many
many years.

This will obviously have no effect if I'm the only one doing this, but it
worries me that as Chris says, the frequency of these ads (in all their
variations) is increasing. It can only mean that an increasing number of
people are actually following the ads up with orders.

My hope is that facebook will actually pay heed to my complaints, and look

[Flightgear-devel] Nonfunctional airplanes

Can you be more specific about what the problem was?
If it was a crash on startup, can you retry these with real weather fetch
disabled?

There are some problems that may occur when reseting JSBSim (which may or
may not be aircraft specific) and seems to be extra prone to occur during
the early reset caused by the automatic change of startup location
that may happen when the new weather conditions are applied.

There are many may and seems in the above but the problem has proved
hard to track down.

Both aircraft are otherwise flyable as far as I know.
(The real weather fetch issue is listed under known problems on the wiki
page for these aircraft.)

Hi,

I had the same result with the 737-300 back a while ago.
It would take off and climb and then nosed into the ground
All other planes I tried didn't act like that.
That's Pilot Error- just keep to the weigh, speed and flapssetting given in the
Help menu. Like in real life.  Based on the real datas. (the fdm is a
incredible work by David!)

It also seems that the most recent fgdata (todays version) gives this error
d...@m1l-susehs:~ fgfs aircraft=737-300
Processing command line arguments
Fatal
 error: Failed to open file
  at aircraft=737-300
 (received from SimGear XML Parser)

Is SimGear causing this problem?

Never had this error- And I use latest GIT.
My problem is that gitorious.org gives me an error message when trying to get a
merge request

Hi,

BTW:
Regarding these models the original author ( G Robin ) is gone.
The decision has been to transfer the responsibility to me (though not aware

I am looking at the GRTux hangar, which is unfortunately not GPL (CREATIVE-

Within it, these models (and others) are +/- FG July git version compatible.
I just start updating the hangar, the target is to comply with the coming FG

Thus, that is an other alternative for users who are fond of these models, and

I just picked this one as a random item from your list and I'm happy to
state that it runs and flies properly for me (real weather, water
shader and 3D clouds enabled and working).

Okay, nice to hear - must be a quirk on my side then.

I don't have a problem with clouds, shaders or any visual goodies - I
tested all airplanes with the same setup, most run, some don't.

For what it's worth, the complete set of commandline options was

 --disable-fullscreen --geometry=800x600 --disable-real-weather-fetch
--airport=TNCM --timeofday=noon --enable-auto-coordination
--aircraft=aircraft

To be honest, I see no value in this list as long as environment and
detailed information about the respective malfunctioning are unknown -
from my perspective it's close to FUD

I have no idea what FUD is ('feet up display'?), but point taken - I won't
be writing similar info in the future to the list. Sorry for any

The latest version of the FAQ (v1.4) is below. This was agreed on this
list back on 26 December, 2009, with a fair
bit of discussion, so it should still be valid. It is probably worth
updating it with the other names of FPS (FlightPro Simulator)

Amusingly, while some of the statements were time specific (new
release in the new year...), they mostly still apply.

There is a version on the wiki, but it has since been modified by
various people to something more emotional and prejorative,
which nicely illustrates the point Martin and I were making :)

 -Stuart

FlightGear Flight Pro Sim Statement (v1.4):

As many people will be aware, there is a new flight simulator product
that is being widely and actively
marketed at the moment - Flight Pro Sim. As it is almost entirely
 based on FlightGear, there is
some confusion between the two. To help provide some clarity, and answer
 some
common questions, we (the core FlightGear development team) felt it
was appropriate to make a statement, and provide a FAQ.

FlightGear is an open-source flight simulator that was started in
 1996. It is released under
the GNU General Public License v2, and as such, it is free to use,
modify and distribute with few restrictions. It has been
developed with the collaboration of a large number of individuals over
the last 12 years. FlightGear can
be downloaded at no cost from http://www.flightgear.org.

Flight Pro Sim is a commercial product very heavily based on FlightGear.
Investigation by a number of the FlightGear developers has found no
 difference between this and the
FlightGear v1.9.1 release other than a change of name. Flight Pro Sim
is in no way endorsed or supported by the core FlightGear development team.

Given the similarities between Flight Pro Sim and FlightGear, we would
 recommend that prospective buyers download
FlightGear for free and satisfy themselves that Flight Pro Sim
provides worthwhile value for money before purchasing it.

 FAQ:

Q: What is the difference between FlightGear and Flight Pro Sim?
A: As far as we have been able to make out, the only difference
between FlightGear v1.9.1 and Flight Pro Sim is a change in
name throughout the software, and the fact that you have to pay for it.

Q: Is it legal for the makers of Flight Pro Sim to simply re-brand
 FlightGear ?
 A: Under the GNU GPL v2 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html),
this is legal, provided that they distribute the
source code (or make it available). We do not know if this is the case or
 not.

Q: Is it legal to sell a copy of FlightGear, whether re-branded or not ?
A: Yes, provided the seller is in compliance with a number of
conditions detailed in the GPL. In
fact, those interested in receiving a DVD containing FlightGear may do
 so through
the main FlightGear website, and directly contribute to the project
 (though they may
want to wait for the upcoming release in the new year).

Q: Has Flight Pro Sim paid any money to FlightGear for the rights to
 the program ?
A: No. No such payment is required, as FlightGear is GPL software.

Q: Why do the FlightGear developers allow this ?
A: The freedom to modify and enhance FlightGear is a core part of the
 project, and of open-source
in general. Restricting the modifications that are allowed and what
people can do with the software
 goes against that ethos.

Q: Is there any relationship between the makers of Flight Pro Sim and
 the FlightGear Project?
 A: No.

Q: Has Flight Pro Sim contributed to the FlightGear project at all ?
 A: No.

Q: I have purchased Flight Pro Sim. Can I get a refund ?
A: That is something you will have to take up with the distributors of
 Flight Pro Sim.

Yup, and it's done pretty cleverly: The URL which is being shown when
you move the mouse over the ad (URL in a yellow frame in my Firefox) is
_not_ necessarily the actual proxy-URL.
At least when you type that one into your browser, you end up at a
non-existent page. Apparently they're somehow evaluating the
referencing site/page.

I would once again plead for the ads to be removed from flightgear.org - it
gives totally the wrong impression to visitors, regardless of whether the add
is for FPS or not - the ones I see are for some crazy Facebook-based Sims game
with Anime avatars - not quite my thing :)

I'm happy to contribute annually for hosting if that's what it takes. I've

What's the actual link (I can't read the full url from your image). We can

I would once again plead for the ads to be removed from flightgear.org - it
gives totally the wrong impression to visitors, regardless of whether the add
is for FPS or not - the ones I see are for some crazy Facebook-based Sims
game with Anime avatars - not quite my thing :)

I'm happy to contribute annually for hosting if that's what it takes. I've
got about 99.99% of a DreamHost account unused, that I already pay $70 a year
 for.
