[Flightgear-devel] FlightGear Newsletter - December 2011

2012-01-03 Thread Gijs de Rooy

May I present you the last newsletter of 2011! Happy new year everyone!

Just like last month, this newsletter contains some important information for
contributors, so read it carefully. Altough most of the release cycle will be
the same as for
2.4.0, there are some important differences with respect to aircraft.

Anyone interested to write next
month's interview? The idea is that contributors pick interview
questions and answer them by themselves. You can either send me the interview,
or put it in
the
newsletter yourself.

Contributions for this month are welcome at the
wiki.

 English Electric Lightning:
Nothing wrong with it, but if anyone would like to add a new splash screen
picture, I have a nice series from the top of a ballistic arc at around
65.000 ft with nice aerial views of Nevada. Just let me know.

Hi Thorsten,

Glad to hear it still works (I don't currently have a working FG build) - I'd
be happy to see a new splashscreen, the existing one is pretty old... I can't
recall, can we have multiple splash screens for one aircraft? I know that you
get one of the random generic splashscreens if there's none defined for the
aircraft you're using. Maybe it's not a feature people want, but I always
thought that a little bit of variety would be nice!

Cheers,

AJ

BTW, what is the reason for the splash images to be small and square? At

to be 16:9, with anything important having to fit 4:3?

[Flightgear-devel] Starting / stopping MP in-sim

2012-01-03 Thread Stuart Buchanan
Hi All,

I'm going through the GUI to update the Manual with the correct menu items for
the upcoming release.

I noticed the MP Settings dialog which I'm sure has been there for ages without
me seeing it. Should this now be documented as the standard way to enable MP,
abs should there be a checkbox allowing the MP server to be set without MP
being active? I'll also update the dialog to make it more consistent with the
rest of the UI if no one objects.

On a related note I noticed that the menu option to change the lat/Lin format
has been removed. Given how useful it is to have a decimal degrees read out for
scenery development that seems somewhat strange. Was this intentional ? Or is
it a regression? I'm thinking it would be better located under HUD properties.

I added the feature, but there's a couple of issues - we need to hardcode a
server list for this release (there's a ticket about dynamically retrieving a
list of active MP servers, for post 2.6), and the pui combo box has some focus
issues, to do with when it fires its valueChanged notification. In the
medium-term I'll improve the pui code, but again for 2.6, making the widget
'non-live', and adding a separate connect button or checkbox is the way to go,
I think.

(In more detail - I tried to make the combo-box editable - so you can enter a
server address manually - but when you do this, the widget seems to be
reluctant to loose the keyboard focus, and hence propagate the typed value,
unless you click on another text field in the dialog). Notably, simply clicking
outside the widget *won't* force it to loose focus.

Hi Martin,

Just tried a 4x4 degrees around YGIL -
  N -29, S -33, W 146, E 150

Downloads from the WEB page -
===

(a) Custom Scenery - worked fine... zip downloaded and
appears valid... and has 11 shapefiles... 44 files...

(b) CLC2000v13 - got a 404 error - Not Found

The requested URL /download/1e82c1e0-6193-47d1-8af4-692aa2b30017.zip
was not found on this server.

Repeated, with same 404, different zip -

was not found on this server.

(c) OpenStreetMap - appeared to work fine... a zip downloaded

And the contents of this COPYING file was -
quote
Map data (c) OpenStreetMap contributors, CC-BY-SA

http://www.openstreetmap.org/
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/
/quote

And repeating the download got the same result!!! ;=((

(d) But doing individual layer downloads, like osm_rail,
osm_river, osm_tertiary - the only 4 tried at this time,
worked fine... shapefiles look good...

So I got problems just with (b) CLC2000v13 and
(c) OpenStreetMap...

But since it was my first try with both of these,
do not know if it is the result of the recent changes,
or if it has existed for some time...

Direct URL downloading...

Have not yet had a chance to again test direct URL
down loading, but will get around to it, and advise any

This programmed URL downloading is the method I use
normally, usually from within a script/program, and this
worked fine on my last downloads a week or so back...

Will test more as time permits, and the need develops ;=))

Summary
===

To me this is a VERY valuable service, but I guess there
are just not that many people into their own scenery
building, ;=(( It is quite an undertaking...

And many that do sometimes use other data sources... with
more detail... especially since the 'swirlies' rendering
bug appears FIXED with the new BTG versions...

But this could/should change as 'easier' TG tool building
methods get around, and more is done on GUI scenery
building tools... must find the time to continue my
efforts in this regard ;=))

Everybody, and their dog, at least 'speak' frequently
about the 850 apt data, with its curved taxiways...

HTH.

CLC is CORINE Land Cover, a project of the EEA, the European

Re: [Flightgear-devel] Aircraft issues: Vostok-1, dc-3, dhc6, CRJ700, pa24-250-CIIB

2012-01-03 Thread Heiko Schulz
Hello,

* dc-3: Very nice cockpit work - the manual needs an update though,
starting the engine seems to require at least one more step than
advertized (the selection of a fuel tank). Even then for some reason I got
only the left engine on - repeating symmetrically what I did never started
the right engine until I used the autostart function.

According to the DC3-Thread in the forum
(http://www.flightgear.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=4t=13629start=90#p146252)
the developement group decided not to work with helijah anymore for some known
reasons. Obviously they will make further work and improvements on the DC3. But
it seems not to make it's way into FGdata, at least not by helijah.

Difficult situation

But I'm more concerned about some licence infringement of helijah according to
the same thread in the forum. I hope it is not true, though I was already aware
of one infringement. (Original Airwolf-sound).

* dhc6: Nice to see more details in the cockpit. Just, how the hell do I
switch all the warning signs off? After starting the engines, the whole
warning panel lit up (which I know from some other aircraft as a test
mode), but the lights never went out. Plane was flying fine though.

Look at the Overhead panel- there is a switch called caution lights- just
disengage.
But I'm not sure if this switch is realistic simulated.

Cheers
Heiko

[Flightgear-devel] Aircraft issues: Cessna Citation-X

2012-01-03 Thread Heiko Schulz
Hello,

I updated my FGdata today, and wow- the Citation X has improved!
Especially the Primus Display are great- the NAV map was a long missing feature!

I also could see that the Autopilot has been improved and works now like it
should: a real FLC-Mode!

But I have problems with the locking on ILS. Whenever I engage the Aproach-Mode
in ILS/NAV-Mode the aircraft make a barrel roll and heads down to ground.

As an example: KSFO 28R
NAV-Mode, heading-selected to intercept the LOC. Engage Aproach-Mode- when it
captures the ILS, it makes the roll down to the ground.

Am I doing something wrong, or is it a bug?

Beside this issue, it would be a candidate for the Base package for me!

[Flightgear-devel] Release 2.6.0 git/fgdata aircraft maintenance

2012-01-03 Thread ThorstenB
Hi,

in preparation of the Release 2.6.0, two issues affecting Aircraft in
fgdata will be fixed by a batch commit. Updates will be pushed to
fgdata next week, so shortly before the 2.6.0 release branch is created.

If you want to fix these issues for your aircraft yourself, you have to
do it _now_ and push the update or merge request for your aircraft
(before next Tuesday).

* Issue #1 is stereo sound files. 98 aircraft are still affected by this
issue - which is actually one more than when we discussed this in early
December. Meanwhile, two aircraft were fixed (Sikorsky-76C and
sopwithCamel), however, two new aircraft with the issue were added
(Gloster-Whittle and Lockheed-Martin-FA-22A-Raptor). And we forgot to
count the separated an2 last time...

All aircraft affected by the sound issue (as of today) are listed here:
http://pastebin.com/PLe3jk9Y
and the full list of affected files: http://pastebin.com/uLA1Sj2C

* Issue #2 is the deprecated JSBSim properties egt_deg... (instead of
egt-deg...). These have triggered automatic warnings for more than a
year. The issue only remains for 7 aircraft - which will also be fixed
next week:
737NG600
737NG700
737NG800
737NG900
A380
Lockheed-NF104
fokker50
(Use grep -r /egt_ fgdata/Aircraft to see the remaining occurrences).

If you want to resolve the issues of your aircraft yourself, see here
for more info: http://wiki.flightgear.org/Aircraft_maintenance

cheers,
Thorsten

 All sounds good, thanks.

I've just pushed an update to the MP Settings dialog. Let me know what
you think.

A couple of notes:

1) I've included location information for the servers, so they
can be used sensibly by users to determine the correct MP server
to connect to. So our instructions for new users can hopefully be simply
to open the dialog, select a server close to the user, and press Connect.
Another win for usability - great work James et al. !

2) I've remove the port setting. This defaults to 5000, and isn't something
that a user connecting to the standard MP servers is going to change.
If someone is connecting to a non-standard server, they'll need to do so
from the command line anyway

3) The only way I found to disconnect from the MP environment was to set
the txhost to 0.0.0.0 (from a code read of multiplayermgr.cxx). Is
there a better
way to disconnect? As far as I can see, there's no way to do so gracefully at
present - looks like an else branch is missing from the if() test of
the txhost
string.

Hi Stuart and James,

nice work on the dialog updates. Works much better now :)
Some comments:
menu option is greyed out when MP is not enabled on startup (via
commandline/fgrun).maybe add a note like Individual servers can be down?
Could even add a button to open
the mpstatus website. People don't Read That Fine Manual, so we shouldn't rely

that.
callsign only changes when re-connecting. I'd add a note about that as well.

mode), but the lights never went out. Plane was flying fine though.

Look at the Overhead panel- there is a switch called caution lights- just
 disengage.
But I'm not sure if this switch is realistic simulated.

 Cheers
 Heiko

Im guessing there's a nasal error happening there ,since i cant
reproduce the problem , but i upgraded to Ubuntu 11.10 and have many
graphic card oddities now , so im in the process of trying to solve
that first.
