No, that is fine. I just wanted to make sure you didn't build fop without
them in place, because that will prevent their use at runtime, even if they
are there are runtime.

I am confused by "now". Were they in place before (when you said the PNG
wasn't being rendered)? If you are still not getting output, and getting no
relevant error messages in your log, then please do a "dir" or "ls" on your
lib directory, and paste the results into your return message.

I'm using the downloaded binary, which did not include jimi, jai or logkit
in lib. Is that an error?
I have now added the jimi and jai files. Unfortunately the programs I'm
using seem to expect their users to know enough about java to fix things,
when it isn't necessary at all to go quite far with xml without it.

You shouldn't need to do that. Did you get any errors? Also, have you built
FOP on your local machine, or are you using downloaded binaries? If you have
built it locally, you will need the jimi and jai files installed in the
correct directories at build time so that support for them will be included
in the compile.

Look in the "lib" directory.

Thanks, Victor,
I was wondering about jimi, which is art of the recommended code line for
XSelerator. I have now installed it, but the png didn't show up. Maybe I
have to restart my computer?
I also downloaded jai, but the files the FOP instructions said I should sopy
over to the FOP/lib folder weren't part of the download. (Please excuse my
ignorance about Java. I've only had a very basic beginner course.)

Have you looked at:
http://xml.apache.org/fop/graphics.html ?
