RE: Optimize preview of EPS files?
Framers, PSAlter from Quite can also add preview to most documents with PostScript level 1 and 2 content. I'm unaware whether or not you can define custom resolution of the generated preview, though. Anyway, be aware about a possible limitation with importing PDF documents into Windows FrameMaker. SPOT colors may not be safeguarded downstream. On 6. March 2008 I posted a comment on this issue to the Frameusers list (topic: PDFFrameMakerPDF Color Issue). I'll copy in a small part here: ~ Copy from topic: PDFFrameMakerPDF Color Issue ~ On Page 14 in Adobe® FrameMaker® 7.2 User Guide Supplement for Windows® and UNIX® it's stated: snip Importing PDF and Illustrator files (UNIX) -- You can import Adobe PDF files and Illustrator 9 and 10 files into a FrameMaker document in release 7.1 or later. When you import a PDF or Illustrator file into FrameMaker, the file is treated as a graphic, and only one page can be imported at a time. You can import it either by copy or by reference. *** Both process and spot colors can be displayed and printed ***. /snip This statement seem to be faulty. At least, on Windows spot colors contained in imported PDF documents appear NOT to be retained when output from FrameMaker on Windows, and will -- as far as I can see -- effectively output as defined in their alternate color space, usually CMYK. Hence, importing spot colored PDF documents is to no avail with FrameMaker on Windows. I haven't tested on other platforms. ~ End copy For further details please refer to the PDFFrameMakerPDF Color Issue topic. I'm unaware whether or not this inexpediency is still present with release 8 versions, but I certainly suspect it is. I have neither seen any official statement from a Adobe representative that confirm the inappropriateness nor its fix. publishing problems for Kazakh
Hello Framers, I hope there is someone out there who can help me… I am publishing a document in Kazakh language in Structured FrameMaker7.2 in combination with a CMS. For Russian and sort-like languages I use Arial Cyr, with a unicode mapping table Kazakh uses some extended cyrillic characters not supported by Arial CYR. (Бұл жалпы шолу бөлімі қолдану барысында тағамдарыңызды пісіру және қайнатудың ) I use PragmaticaI to publish Kazakh, and in FrameMaker it works fine (I must admit that mapping the small character (қ) was not possible….). But when I print this document to printer or to file (PDF) two charactes (Қ and қ) don’t publish, they leave a blanc. Now I have no idea what causes this, and more important how to solve this. Is there anyoune who has some experience with this? Is my font not correct? Does anyone know about another font? Thanks in advance! RE: Optimize preview of EPS files?
Creating previews with Ghostscript (which internally seem to use the EPSWrite device) will -- if I'm not mistaken -- convert a lot of graphic elements and text to bitmaps, and all colors will turn into plain RGB. Hence, the resulting EPS document may not be device independent anymore. I haven't tried this myself with the latest GS versions, but until a few years back I've only seen poor results. An ideal tool for adding EPS previews is a tool that doesn't make any conversion of the content stream, but ONLY interpret that stream and add the result hereof as a preview header. I'm not sure that is possible with Ghostscript or GSView. IS THIS POSSIBLE AT ALL
Hello Framers, here I'm presenting an impossible task. :-). I have a 300 pages document which consists of 9 sections. I need to generate an index for it. Page number format should look like this: X-PP, where X is a section number and PP - page number. Had I separate files, that would not be a problem - make a book and off you go. I have 1 and I don't want split it for certain reasons. So, is there a way to accomplish this numbering in one file? I know in InDesign that is totally possible with Section'ing the document. It's a clunky solution predicated by your keeping the book in one file, but just set up different master pages. The only difference between master pages or sets of master pages would be the differing Xs hard-coded into the footers: one set for Section 1, one set for Section 2, etc. Apply those masters to the appropriate selections of pages and you're done. Re: publishing problems for Kazakh
It could be a font file error, but it sounds to me as if Acrobat may not have access to the same fonts that FM does. In your Acrobat set up, there's a font location item. Make sure that all font directories. Also, make sure that Acrobat is set as the system's default printer, to eliminate the possiblity that printer-specific fonts are being invoked. So Michael, what you're asking is if you can have one format of page numbers on the pages and a second, different format in the Index? Is that correct? *** Just in passing, almost all actions that can be applied to a file can also be applied to every file in a book -- that's the way most FM users ensure consistency. RE: IS THIS POSSIBLE AT ALL
Hi Michael, It is possible - provided that your section numbers are generated using paragraph autonumbering. First, if you've not already generated an index for the doc, do so. Then, in the generated index file, view the references pages. There should be a page called IX (with a flow called IX). This page controlls the sort order of the index, and other things like the appearance of index entries. One of the paras on the page should be: $pagenum Change it to: $paranumonly[Section]-$pagenum Where Section should be changed to the paragraph tag you are using for your sections. It's a good idea to use a non-breaking hyphen (esc hyphen h) so that the section and page numbers don't get split in the index. Regenerate the index and you should get the required X-PP format. RE: IS THIS POSSIBLE AT ALL
Well, what I figured and is working... I added autonumbering to my Section paragraphs. Position of the numbers at the end of the paragraph so it doesn't throw the position off-center and tagged with a chartag that colors it white. $paranumonly[Section] does work fine in generated files providing you have this autonumbering on. Final product looks satisfactory and this method allows me to use more files to generate from - i.e. cross-indexing. Any other thoughts? Re: anchored frame alignment with insertion point
Aravind, No attachment came through, but I think I understand your goal: graphic alignment at the level of indentation of the surrounding text. We achieve this by having the graphic inserted At Insertion Point in a special formatting paragraph we call Spacer. The Spacer format has tabs at each possible indentation level. So, after you insert the graphic, you just back-arrow to get left of the graphic, and tab over as many times as desired. Hope that helps! If not, send me the attachment so I can more clearly grasp the issue. Rene L. RE: Barcode font
Hi Will, There are lots and lots of different barcode fonts out there. Each will encode the barcode string (the information that the barcode represents) differently. So the barcode font you should use really depends on the scanner device that will interpret the barcode. The best analogy off the top of my head is that it's like a codec. The information must be encoded so the interpreter can understand it. The barcode font you use determines the encoding. You need to find out what flavor of barcode is expected by the interpreting device. There may even be some precise positioning and orientation requirements for the barcode if it will be mechanically scanned in an automated fashion, such as with folding/inserting devices or mail sorters. 3of9 is very common, but there are many, many others. Wikipedia has a decent overview of barcodes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode IDAutomation has a bunch of barcode fonts you can download: http://www.idautomation.com/fonts/ But find out which one you need first... Separating Color and BW pages for printing
Has anyone created a process in either standard or structured FM to automatically separate the color pages from the BW so they can be sent to separate printers? Due to the high cost and slower printing speed of the color printer, we need to separate these pages to minimize both the costs and printing time. At this time, we generate a PDF and manually create 2 separate PDF files to send to the BW and Color printers. I believe there is a better option and am hoping someone has already done it and is willing to share their solution. We're open to any suggestions. Hi there, I am currently using Visio 2007 and FrameMaker 7.1. I used to be able to import objects (Fileà importàobjectàCreate from file) from visio (saved as drawings or vsd) into Frame. Re: Basic question- Visio to Frame
The accepted way to do this was to import Visio files as OLE objects, however OLE didn't always work reliably, especially if you were doing several files. Just lately, after installing XP SP3, even that limited method quit working for me and several others who have reported problems. If I were you, I'd print to a PDF from Visio or SaveAs a graphic format from Visio and import the resulting file as a referenced file. Re: Help, cannot import objects from visio
This was reported a couple weeks ago on this and several other FM sites, just after XP SP3 was released (it includes OLE fixes). Uninstalling SP3 re-enables OLE linking and makes the error messages go away; keeping it installed keeps it broken. I haven't heard of any work arounds or that the Microsoft fix is actually broken. When I had to do this (a couple of years ago), I was advised to save the Visio diagram as a .wmf file, and then import that. The problem with WMF is that the format only embeds the *name* of the font(s) used for any text objects in the figure and not the font itself. This is OK if you are the only one ever working on the files, but it has the potential to be a real PITA if you use non-ubiquitous fonts and need to hand the files off to someone else for any purpose. Printing the Visio figure to PDF and inserting the PDF by reference is the method I've used with great success for several years. Originally I used that method because the EPS export filter in Visio was chronically broken (before Microsoft dropped it from the product altogether...), but I wound up adopting PDF as my metafile format of choice for all graphics since it has all the same benefits as EPS for printed (or PDF) output and also has superb appearance on-screen as opposed to the low-res raster preview image you get with EPS. -FR _ Change the world with e-mail. RE: Attaching a graphic to a paragraph tag in Word (like we can do inFM) - is this possible?
Tammy Van Boening wrote: For all of us Frame users out there who must suffer through Word every now and then (and for all you Word gurus and guruesses, whom I admire heavily for keeping your sanity) - in Framemaker, we can permanently have a graphic placed on a page every time we use a particular paragraph style. For example, every time I use the Heading1 style in my templates, I have a graphic called Heading1Line that is always placed beneath the text of the tag (through the Advanced Paragraph Properties/Reference page function in FM.) Is there a way to do this in Word? Actually, this is something that's much easier and more powerful in Word because you can add lines, boxes, shading, etc., to the pgf style definition. In the Modify Style dialog, click Format Border (that's 2007; might be a bit different navigation in other versions). HTH! Richard Richard G. why is Frame 8 slower than Frame 6 to import eps files
Hi Folks A few weeks ago, while testing Frame 8 and how it handled one of our typical manuals, I noticed that some graphics imported by reference from a network server were very slow to display on the page (note that this slow display only occurs the first time the graphic is displayed; thereafter it seems to go into memory and displays instantly). To cut a long story short, I eventually found that the main reason for this was because our new antivirus software was scanning all files imported or opened over the network. Our IT people solved this problem by changing the configuration of the antivirus software to not scan certain file types. However, when I did some more testing to verify that they had indeed fixed the problem, I noticed that (even with the problem fixed) Frame 8 took longer than Frame 6 to display the same eps graphic. I created new test files in Frame 6 and 8 and imported the same graphics into each file in the same way (by reference from our illustrations database on our network). The Frame test files have 3 eps graphics, and one each of tif, jpg, bmp and wmf. Only the eps files take longer to display in Frame 8 than Frame 6 - the other graphics take the same time in each version (typically 1 second or less). The delay in Frame 8 is most obvious when displaying the two eps files that show part or all of a circuit board layout: the 1.6MB eps typically displays in 2 seconds in Frame 6, and in 7 seconds in Frame 8; the 3.9MB eps typically displays in 4 seconds in Frame 6, and in 13 seconds in Frame 8. I realise there is a lot of detail to display in these eps files, but why does the same file take that much longer to display in Frame 8 than in Frame 6? I've run this test in both versions at different times and have had consistent results. For the record, the third eps is a 740kB block diagram (mostly lines and some text) and displays in both versions in about one second or less (although still slightly slower in Frame 8 than 6). Just to make it a bit more curious, I copied the same graphics from the network into the same folder as the Frame test files and reimported them from there. They all displayed in 1 second or less in both Frame 6 and 8. Anybody have any ideas as to why this is happening? Does Frame 8 have different filters for eps? I'm running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 dual core 3GHz PC with 1GB RAM. The eps files were exported from CorelDraw 10 with a low-res tif preview. Optimize preview of EPS files?
Framers, PSAlter from Quite can also add preview to most documents with PostScript level 1 and 2 content. I'm unaware whether or not you can define custom resolution of the generated preview, though. Anyway, be aware about a possible limitation with importing PDF documents into Windows FrameMaker. SPOT colors may not be safeguarded downstream. On 6. March 2008 I posted a comment on this issue to the Frameusers list (topic: PDF>FrameMaker>PDF Color Issue). I'll copy in a small part here: ~ Copy from topic: PDF>FrameMaker>PDF Color Issue ~ On Page 14 in "Adobe? FrameMaker? 7.2 User Guide Supplement for Windows? and UNIX?" it's stated: Importing PDF and Illustrator files (UNIX) -- You can import Adobe PDF files and Illustrator 9 and 10 files into a FrameMaker document in release 7.1 or later. When you import a PDF or Illustrator file into FrameMaker, the file is treated as a graphic, and only one page can be imported at a time. You can import it either by copy or by reference. *** Both process and spot colors can be displayed and printed ***. This statement seem to be faulty. ~ End copy For further details please refer to the "PDF>FrameMaker>PDF Color Issue" topic. I'm unaware whether or not this inexpediency is still present with release 8 versions, but I certainly suspect it is. I have neither seen any official statement from a Adobe representative that confirm the inappropriateness nor its fix. publishing problems for Kazakh
Hello Framers, I hope there is someone out there who can help me? I am publishing a document in Kazakh language in Structured FrameMaker7.2 in combination with a CMS. For Russian and sort-like languages I use Arial Cyr, with a unicode mapping table Kazakh uses some extended cyrillic characters not supported by Arial CYR. (??? ? ?? ??? ? ?? ?? ?? ) I use PragmaticaI to publish Kazakh, and in FrameMaker it works fine (I must admit that mapping the small character (?) was not possible?.). But when I print this document to printer or to file (PDF) two charactes (? and ?) don?t publish, they leave a blanc. Now I have no idea what causes this, and more important how to solve this. Is there anyoune who has some experience with this? Is my font not correct? Does anyone know about another font? Thanks in advance! Optimize preview of EPS files?
Art P.S. Why do you think it has to be in a single file? It could be a font file error, but it sounds to me as if Acrobat may not have access to the same fonts that FM does. In your Acrobat set up, there's a font location item. Make sure that all font directories. Also, make sure that Acrobat is set as the system's default printer, to eliminate the possiblity that printer-specific fonts are being invoked. Is that correct? *** Just in passing, almost all actions that can be applied to a file can also be applied to every file in a book -- that's the way most FM users ensure consistency. The ability to enforce strict standards is the reason it's a publishing industry standard applications. anchored frame alignment with insertion point
Hi All, i'm trying to find out a method to have the anchored frame which is inserted at insertion point to come aligned over the text. please see the attached image. As of now, i'm manually resizing the anchored frame to acheive this. As the anchored frame uses the paragraph tag, which is being used, can we set this so that it comes out properly at the first place? Thanks, Aravind

One of the paras on the page should be: <$pagenum> Change it to: <$paranumonly[Section]>-<$pagenum> Where "Section" should be changed to the paragraph tag you are using for your sections. It's a good idea to use a non-breaking hyphen (esc hyphen h) so that the section and page numbers don't get split in the index. Regenerate the index and you should get the required X-PP format. Hi Rob, This type of building block: <$paranumonly[Section]> does not work in generated files. Well, what I figured and is working... I added autonumbering to my Section paragraphs. Position of the numbers at the end of the paragraph so it doesn't throw the position off-center and tagged with a chartag that colors it white. <$paranumonly[Section]> does work fine in generated files providing you have this autonumbering on. Final product looks satisfactory and this method allows me to use more files to generate from - i.e. cross-indexing. Any other thoughts? anchored frame alignment with insertion point
Rene L. Barcode font
Separating Color and B pages for printing
Has anyone created a process in either standard or structured FM to automatically separate the color pages from the B so they can be sent to separate printers? Due to the high cost and slower printing speed of the color printer, we need to separate these pages to minimize both the costs and printing time. At this time, we generate a PDF and manually create 2 separate PDF files to send to the B and Color printers. I believe there is a better option and am hoping someone has already done it and is willing to share their solution. We're open to any suggestions. Thanks. -- Steve

Help, cannot import objects from visio
Hi there, I am currently using Visio 2007 and FrameMaker 7.1. I used to be able to import objects (File? import?object?Create from file) from visio (saved as drawings or vsd) into Frame. Recently, if I try to import an object it lets me, but when I save I get the following error message: "An internal error occurred while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved, but has lost some image data." Although the file does not save. I can't figure out why this is occurring. No updates have been made to visio or frame that I am aware of so I'm not sure why this process no longer works? Has anybody had this problem. And, if you import flowcharts etc from visio what is the process you use? Thank you! Melissa
Basic question- Visio to Frame
The accepted way to do this was to import Visio files as OLE objects, however OLE didn't always work reliably, especially if you were doing several files. Just lately, after installing XP SP3, even that limited method quit working for me and several others who have reported problems. If I were you, I'd print to a PDF from Visio or SaveAs a graphic format from Visio and import the resulting file as a referenced file. Help, cannot import objects from visio
This was reported a couple weeks ago on this and several other FM sites, just after XP SP3 was released (it includes OLE "fixes)." Uninstalling SP3 re-enables OLE linking and makes the error messages go away; keeping it installed keeps it broken. I haven't heard of any work arounds or that the Microsoft fix is actually broken. If I were you, I'd print to a PDF from Visio or SaveAs a graphic format from Visio and import the resulting file as a referenced file rather than as an object. Art . I think if you check the archives, you'll find as much or more criticism of using OLE as acceptance. As for saving Visio drawings in a graphic format, the problem in the past has been that most of Visio's export filters (including WMF and EPS) weren't very good (I don't know if that's changed in Visio 2007). Also, many people unwisely save those nice scalable vector graphics in a raster (bitmap) format like PNG. I've been using a Visio > PDF > FM process for some time and strongly recommend it. If you have a recent full version of Acrobat (6-8, I believe) and it was installed after Visio (2000-2007, I believe), you'll have PDFMaker available in Visio, just like in Word, and making PDFs is a one-click procedure. Multi-page Visio files turn into multi-page PDFs. In FM, import the PDF by reference (select the page you want, if necessary). When you edit the Visio file, just click the PDF button, and let the path/name default to the one you used the last time you did this. The next time you open the FM doc, you'll see the new version. I'm afraid that's one of the raster file formats I suggested is an unwise choice for a vector drawing. OT: Attaching a graphic to a paragraph tag in Word (like we can do in FM) - is this possible?
For all of us Frame users out there who must suffer through Word every now and then (and for all you Word gurus and guruesses, whom I admire heavily for keeping your sanity) - in Framemaker, we can permanently have a graphic placed on a page every time we use a particular paragraph style. For example, every time I use the Heading1 style in my templates, I have a graphic called Heading1Line that is always placed beneath the text of the tag (through the Advanced Paragraph Properties/Reference page function in FM.) Is there a way to do this in Word? I am heaving to set up a Word template for some of my professional services folks that mimics our FM templates and I am stymied as how to accomplish this in Word. It can't be in my Header or Footer as it needs to be in the body of the document, and I can't recreate the line using the Borders and Shading Option. - Oops, Freudian slip - I am having to set up, not heaving, but that being said. . . This is causing me to heave! -Original Message- From: stclwrsig-l-bounces+tammy.vanboening=healthlanguage.com at mailman.stc.org [mailto:stclwrsig-l-bounces+tammy.vanboening=healthlanguage.com at mailman. stc.org] On Behalf Of Tammy Van Boening Sent: Thursday, May 29, 2008 2:22 PM To: stclwrsig-l at mailman.stc.org Subject: [stclwrsig-l] Attaching a graphic to a format in Word? Attaching a graphic to a paragraph tag in Word (like we can do inFM) - is this possible?

Is there a way to do this in Word? Actually, this is something that's much easier and more powerful in Word because you can add lines, boxes, shading, etc., to the pgf style definition. In the Modify Style dialog, click Format > Border (that's 2007; might be a bit different navigation in other versions). HTH! Richard Richard G.
