FrameMaker 9 and 4-color printing
Hello Framers, I have a client that wants to include 4-color images in a FrameMaker 9 parts catalog. Their printer wants a PDF four output. What is the deal with CMYK printing from FrameMaker 9? I know there are some issues, but I don't know exactly what they are and if there are any workarounds. Any summaries or links would be appreciated. Thank you very much. Fm9: opening large file takes minutes
Hi all Does anyone (Adobe) know why it takes 2 minutes and 52 seconds to open a 700-page Fm file in FramerMaker 9? The Fm file does not contain any graphics, it's just an alphabetical list of paragraphs (*APL.fm). Opening the same file in Fm 10 and Fm 8 just takes 1 second. I've spent about an hour researching this and can't seem to find anything. Lacking an alternative, I've changed the alpha list to bullets and moved on. This corrects the problem and the final numbered item is 3., which is correct. However, there may be situations in the future in which I may need to use the Numbered - Alpha - Bullet - Numbered format. Suggestions anyone? Hi Joe, Others have given you the fix, but not necessarily the explanation. The reason your 3rd step is numbered 4 is that you are using only one numbering block and only one numbering series in your tag definitions. The fact that you change from n= to a= in the tag definitions changes only the *appearance* of the numbering variable; it does not refer to, or create, a *second* variable. So you have a single variable, but both your Numbered1 and your Numbered2 tags reset it to a value of one. Each subsequent tag, whether an n+ or an a+ simply increments the same variable, while displaying it as a digit or a character. As you've seen from other replies, the way to create more than one variable is either to define more than one numbering series, each with its own variable numbering block (Rick Quatro's first suggestion, using N: and L: to label the series) or to put several numbering blocks in a single numbering series and then control their value and visibility by changing what you type within the brackets (Rick's second suggestion). Note that Rick has also labelled the series N: in his second suggestion, although that's not strictly necessary. It's just good practice that helps to prevent inadvertently messing things up if you also create figures or tables that should be numbered independently. So you might have N: for the series that numbers content paragraphs, F: for numbering figure captions, T: for tables, and so on, all operating independently. Series labels are one-character long and case-sensitive (always followed by a colon), so you can create lots of 'em if you need to. Re: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
Alison, Probably the easiest way would be to make a new 11x17 template page, not as part of the main book master pages, and just insert the 11x17 page as a component of the book, in the appropriate page relation to the main book. As long as you don't try and copy page layouts from a normal chapter to the 11x17 'chapter', or vice versa, you shouldn't have a problem. You might have to tweak a few para tags. If you do modify the para tags, you don't what to copy them to the main book, or vice versa. --- On Thu, 6/23/11, Alison Craig alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com wrote: From: Alison Craig alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com Subject: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book To: framers@lists.frameusers.com framers@lists.frameusers.com Date: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 1:43 PM #yiv1028064089 P.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 LI.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 DIV.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 TABLE.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3Table { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 DIV.yiv1028064089Section1 { } This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at karlmeinert at hotmail dot com if you want to talk to him directly. Re: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
I have FM 9, but never added 11x17 as a master page. When I used 7.2 I always made a file called Chapter 2 11x17 and created the master page for it. Once I have the file done than I add it to the book and set page numbers so the number correctly. All seems to work fine. _ Brenda L. RE: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
I can't think of any easy way to get FrameMaker to do this, because running a graphic through the gutter is typically a problematic thing to do. If you're delivering a PDF that anyone is ever going to turn into hard copies, they are probably going to lose some amount of the graphic because most office printers have at least some non-printable margin at some or all edges of the page. A real page layout program (e.g., InDesign) would probably let you do this, since it's fairly common to have a background image that bleeds through the gutter, because in that kind of situation it doesn't really matter if part of the image cannot be seen. But a screenshot with callouts can't afford to have a dead area down the middle. What *can* be done in FrameMaker is to include a double-width page in the book--basically a fold-out. The key distinction here is that it's a single oversize page (usually a recto) rather than two facing pages of the standard size. -Fred Ridder From: alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com To: framers@lists.frameusers.com Date: Thu, 23 Jun 2011 11:43:37 -0700 Subject: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at karlmeinert at hotmail dot com if you want to talk to him directly. BookMover Script used with Framemaker
Hi Everyone I'm trialling GolehTek's BookMover and have found an anomaly, just wondered if anyone else had. For the most part, I find it a powerful tool. However, on the odd occasion it doesn't pick up a series of pictures which are scattered elsewhere on the network and not in the same folder structure where the Framemaker Files reside e.g. Our folder structure is: ANYTOOL Main folder Manual Drawings Under Drawings it could be split into a minimum of 2 subfolders. The Book file I used was in a structure like this but the images were in a different tool's folder structure. Have I missed something when setting up the script? Should I have tweaked it slightly? I've checked the little manual that comes with it and can't see anything glaring. Re: nested alpha lists and bulleted lists within numbered lists
Hi Joe What you need to understand is that the is a placeholder for a number (or letter), and n or a simply defines whether it will be a number or a letter. So if you have: n=1 - gives 1 n+ - gives 2 a=1 - gives a a+ - gives b a+ - gives c n+ - gives 4 Why? Since you have only one placeholder in each paragraph, with no series identifier, Frame treats them as a single series, whether you tell it to use arabic numbers, letters, roman numerals, or whatever. The first two are obvious. In the third one you have reset the number of the sequence back to 1, while telling Frame to make it alphabetic. So the next ones carry on from there - that is, 2, 3, and 4. The last paragraph therefore is the fourth in the sequence, not the third as you expect. Your mistake is that you think the paragraph format that you apply makes any difference. In contrast, it is the number of placeholders in the series that makes the difference. What you should do is this: Either define two paragraph formats that each use two placeholders, , and control them separately; or, as Rick suggests, use series identifiers to distinguish two separate series. So you could accomplish what you want by doing: n=1 - gives 1 - apply Numbered1 para format n+ - gives 2 - apply Numbered1 para format a=1 - gives a and maintains the value of n - apply Numbered2 para format a+ - gives b and maintains the value of n - apply Numbered2 para format a+ - gives c and maintains the value of n - apply Numbered2 para format n+ - gives 3 and maintains the value of a - apply Numbered para format Or by doing: N:n=1 - gives 1 - Numbered1 para format N:n+ - gives 2 - Numbered1 para format A:a=1 - gives a - Numbered2 para format A:a+ - gives b - Numbered2 para format A:a+ - gives c - Numbered2 para format N:n+ - gives 3 - Numbered para format Both of these need refining a bit so that a will restart at 1 at the appropriate places (when you want to have 4.a instead of 4.d, for example). I hope this clarifies things for you. I will send you off-list an article written some years ago (not by me) that explains autonumbering and the use of series and multiple placeholders. Once the penny drops it will all make perfect sense. Re: nested alpha lists and bulleted lists within numbered lists
Great, thanks! Joe On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 8:31 AM, Roger Shuttleworth rshuttlewo...@avbasesystems.com wrote: ** Hi Joe What you need to understand is that the is a placeholder for a number (or letter), and n or a simply defines whether it will be a number or a letter. I asked the same question recently and was told it can’t be done – changing all Master Pages to the new page size is the appropriate behavior. If David Spreadbury’s suggestion works then that renders the advice I got incorrect. Actually, David's suggestion is exactly the same, merely stated differently. The key phrase from his post is insert the 11x17 page as a component of the book. A component of a book is a file, so David was trying to say use a separate file for the 11x17 page. As someone else pointed out, you can't mix page sizes in a file. But you can mix page sizes in a book easily enough by using different files for each page size. So it's not that it can't be done, and it's not that you have to resort to a workaround. It works as designed; the workaround is the way it's _supposed_ to work. Adding a new file to the book and setting its numbering properties is trivially easy. Richard G. Re: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
It actually can be done, that is generating mixed page sizes in the final PDF directly from FrameMaker. The basic concept is to make all master pages 17x11 and use ps text box code to trim the final output of non-17x11 pages to 8x11. (postscript marker /cropbox) You could use that as your inside spread or as a foldout. If you want double sided pages, then you have to figure out a way to sequence two 8x11 pages on the back of your 17x11 insdie spread. Re: FW: Scientific names in roman not italics in running headers
Create, if you don't have one, a Character format for the italics. Insert the char format in the H/F variable where you want the italics to appear. Add the Default font object at point where you go back to normal font characteristics. For example: Field Screening Aid for EmphasisBug OneDefault ¶ Font Emphasis calls the character tag that applies italics at that point. Default Font returns the string to the original font. If the Chapter Title and Bug One are separate Unstructured variables, insert the variables instead of text, e.g., $paratext[Chapter Title] Emphasis$paratext[Bug One]Default Font If Structured, replace the '$paratext' with '$element text' and the appropriate element name. --- On Thu, 6/23/11, Michalak, Patricia S (APHIS) patricia.s.micha...@aphis.usda.gov wrote: From: Michalak, Patricia S (APHIS) patricia.s.micha...@aphis.usda.gov Subject: FW: Scientific names in roman not italics in running headers To: framers@lists.frameusers.com framers@lists.frameusers.com Date: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 8:36 AM I haven’t had any luck with this one either but I know the answer is out there. OK, I'll rephrase: it's the way that's consistent with the design philosophy behind FM. As I said, this is the way the creators of FM intended it to work. If you're correct, that's too bad. Because the people who prefer A don't understand FM's book/file paradigm, and they don't realize that putting the oversized page in a separate file is at least as easy as -- if not easier than -- ensuring that text reflow doesn't mess up their lovely mixed-sizes-in-one-file pagination. :-) Richard G. Character formats. Create one that does the italics. Then put it in the header. The suggested workaround was to generate a book and create a new file containing the different page size, and modifying page numbering etc. to create continuity across the book. If David Spreadbury's suggestion works then that renders the advice I got incorrect. Richard G. Re: FW: LOF order is Figure 3-2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-3, Figure 3-4...
I have seen this happen when there are two anchored frames at the same location, adjacent to each other. The problem is that the anchor for Fig 2 is physically before the anchor for Fig 1. Move the anchors so that they are in the correct logical order. If using unstructured, put a character or work or space between them. What we have done is create a new element (working with structured frame) with a 1pt space and wrap the second anchor in this element. I would be will to bet, if I were a betting person, that the figures also appear out of order in your cross-reference list. The above will fix both issues. --- On Thu, 6/23/11, Stuart Rogers srog...@phoenix-geophysics.com wrote: From: Stuart Rogers srog...@phoenix-geophysics.com Subject: Re: FW: LOF order is Figure 3-2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-3, Figure 3-4... LOF order is Figure 3-2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-3, Figure 3-4...
Pat, check and see if the figure anchors have got placed together and/or out of order, you might need smart spaces turned off so you can put spaces between them to make it easier to see which is which. Happened to me with table anchors, where I used a tiny Anchored Frame paragraph style to make the table anchors small, and had a few of them gathered together - they were out of order even though the tables themselves were in the right order. Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at "karlmeinert at hotmail dot com" if you want to talk to him directly. He is running Windows 7 with FM9 p230 (but will be updating his patches shortly). Karl says; "Basically I want to have a graphic spanning a 2-page spread (left page - right page) within a chapter. When I tried making a master page 11x17, it applied to all master pages. Same when trying to edit a single body page. Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
--- On Thu, 6/23/11, Alison Craig wrote: From: Alison Craig <alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com> Subject: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book To: "framers at lists.frameusers.com" Date: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 1:43 PM #yiv1028064089 P.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 LI.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 DIV.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3 { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 TABLE.yiv10280640899822e27b-5d79-4dc8-8b04-76e9fc5fc6f3Table { MARGIN:0cm 0cm 0pt;} #yiv1028064089 DIV.yiv1028064089Section1 { } This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at "karlmeinert at hotmail dot com" if you want to talk to him directly. ? Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
I have FM 9, but never added 11x17 as a master page. When I used 7.2 I always made a file called Chapter 2 11x17 and created the master page for it. Once I have the file done than I add it to the book and set page numbers so the number correctly. All seems to work fine. _ Brenda L. Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
-Fred Ridder From: alison.cr...@ultrasonix.com To: framers at lists.frameusers.com Date: Thu, 23 Jun 2011 11:43:37 -0700 Subject: Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book This is a question for a fellow tech writer who can be reached at "karlmeinert at hotmail dot com" if you want to talk to him directly.
Our folder structure is: ANYTOOL Main folder > Manual > Drawings Under Drawings it could be split into a minimum of 2 subfolders. The Book file I used was in a structure like this but the images were in a different tool's folder structure. Have I missed something when setting up the script? Should I have tweaked it slightly? I've checked the little manual that comes with it and can't see anything glaring. Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
I asked the same question recently and was told it can?t be done ? changing all Master Pages to the new page size is the appropriate behavior. Actually, David's suggestion is exactly the same, merely stated differently. The key phrase from his post is "insert the 11x17 page as a component of the book." A component of a book is a file, so David was trying to say use a separate file for the 11x17 page. As someone else pointed out, you can't mix page sizes in a file. But you can mix page sizes in a book easily enough by using different files for each page size. So it's not that it can't be done, and it's not that you have to resort to a "workaround." It works as designed; the "workaround" is the way it's _supposed_ to work. Adding a new file to the book and setting its numbering properties is trivially easy. Richard G. Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
FW: Scientific names in roman not italics in running headers
Create, if you don't have one, a Character format for the italics. Insert the char format in the H/F variable where you want the italics to appear. Add the Default font object at point where you go back to normal font characteristics. For example: Field Screening Aid for Bug One calls the character tag that applies italics at that point. returns the string to the original font. If the Chapter Title and Bug One are separate Unstructured variables, insert the variables instead of text, e.g., <$paratext[Chapter Title]> <$paratext[Bug One]> If Structured, replace the '$paratext' with '$element text' and the appropriate element name. --- On Thu, 6/23/11, Michalak, Patricia S (APHIS) wrote: From: Michalak, Patricia S (APHIS) <patricia.s.micha...@aphis.usda.gov> Subject: FW: Scientific names in roman not italics in running headers To: "framers at lists.frameusers.com" Date: Thursday, June 23, 2011, 8:36 AM I haven?t had any luck with this one either but I know the answer is out there. ? Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book

Richard G. There is a very nice discussion on this very topic at http://objectmix.com/adobe-framemaker/218597-mixed-page-size-framemaker.html Mixing page sizes in one template is not the way to go. FW: LOF order is Figure 3-2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-3, Figure 3-4...
--- On Thu, 6/23/11, Stuart Rogers wrote: From: Stuart RogersSubject: Re: FW: LOF order is Figure 3-2, Figure 3-1, Figure 3-3, Figure 3-4... Adding 11x17 Master Page into a file in a book
With all due respect, "the way it's supposed to work"? If Adobe gathered 100 Technical Writers together and asked them whether they would rather A) be able to create a new Master Page with a different page size in the same file; or B) generate a book even if they wouldn't otherwise need one and create a separate file dedicated to the different page size and then add it to the book and then go about setting all of the pagination etc. etc I think the vote would indicate how it's "supposed" to work, and I doubt 'B' would get the majority of the votes. Changing a Master Page size and having it not change all of the other Master Page sizes, now THAT would be trivially easy. :) Tim So it's not that it can't be done, and it's not that you have to resort to a "workaround." It works as designed; the "workaround" is the way it's _supposed_ to work. Adding a new file to the book and setting its numbering properties is trivially easy. Richard G.
