Unwanted hairlines around graphics in pdfs created by FM11 (some progress)

2013-07-24 Thread Robert CH Shell
Dear Framers:
Thank you for the helpful and varied responses hints and tips.
I think I speak for the nameless and numberless people who live in terror
trying to earn a living with FM.
This list is above all soothing and helpful.
I am working through every item.

Just for troubleshooting: You don't see them in FM even if you set the
magnification to 4800% ?
Craig
Dear Craig: have learnt how to magnify to that level. No sign of the lines.
I believe an electron microscope won't find anything.
The jpgs are not the problem. All were clipped properly in Photoshop.
All the same jpgs worked fine in several prior pdf editions.
The lines sometimes go right around the graphic more often one or two sides
only.
Select one of the .jpg graphics and check to make sure its border is
set to None (in graphics tools).
Select the frame that contains the .jpg, and make sure its border is set
to None.
Any change in the PDF?
Set to none OK.

A new conclusion late at night...
I had a brainwave and used the same pdf using the Acrobat Reader.
Hey presto no lines.
The problem must reside in the settings of Acrobat XI 11.0.3
Any hints.
I have already "repaired" same result lines

Ergo, FM 11 is not to blame.

Here is how to do it:

Adobe Acrobat 11

Tick, yes, tick AKA "switch on "

"Enhance thin lines"

In my illogical mind I avoided this item as I thought it was the one
preference that was CAUSING the problem. I was disappointed that it was not

I could not help wondering if the toggle is not upside down.

Multi-Volume Documents

2013-07-24 Thread Valerie Lipow
I'm working on a U.S. Air Force maintenance manual containing three
volumes. I know how to enumerate the chapters and cross-references within
each volume, and how to enumerate the volumes and manage the
cross-references within the book.

One audience will use Volumes I and II; another will use Volumes I and III.
Each of the three volumes will be a separate PDF file in some future
electronic manual storage site. I have no way to know the paths for the
file locations.

What is the best way to make persistent cross references across volumes
after the book is PDF'ed? Can it be done in Framemaker?

Multi-Volume Documents

2013-07-24 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Valerie,

With cross-references and hyperlinks, the only way to ensure that the PDF
links work is to make sure the resulting PDFs are in the same relative
location that the FrameMaker books were in. Or, vise versa: If you know how
the PDFs are going to be stored relative to each other, you could organize
the FrameMaker books to match this relative arrangement.

After you find out how the PDFs are going to be stored, you may be able to
use a third-party program to modify the links in the PDF. I use AutoBookmark
Professional from www.evermap.com for this kind of thing. In any case, it is
difficult to provide links between PDFs when you don't know how they are
going to be stored relative to each other.

"Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off"

2013-07-24 Thread Davis, David
Hi folks.
After not using Frame day-to-day for a few years, I've finally landed a
contract where they want me to use it...
So I am just finding out what's new in Frame 11 and reading through all the
docs.

Not wanting to bombard the list with minutiae, but there are some quite odd
things buried in the Frame help files that look like they've been there since
the 1990s -
E.g. in "Home / Using FrameMaker 11 / Templates and Page Layout / Formats >
Fonts" I found this little oddball:

- "Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off
or not installed. If you do use Courier without ATM, FrameMaker products do not
accurately display the Courier font."

Lol what on earth is that about? Adobe Type Manager hasn't been needed for
working with PostScript Type1 fonts since Windows 2000!

TOC has incorrect page numbers

2013-07-24 Thread David Millis
Hello FFs (Fellow Framers).

This morning I discovered that the page numbering that is showing in my
TOC is incorrect. The numbers are correct for a couple of chapters and
at the beginning of the 3rd chapter. Then, in the middle of the 3rd
chapter, the numbers are off by a page (should be 32 and is showing 31
in the TOC). I'm only using Headings 1 and 2 in the TOC and it's a
Heading 1 where it starts to go south.

This is unstructured Frame 7.2 on a Windows 7 machine.

Can someone give me some ideas as to what to look for? I would have an
idea if the numbering was wrong starting at the beginning of a chapter,
just not starting mid-chapter.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Multi-Volume Documents

2013-07-24 Thread Robert Lauriston
When I did that some years ago, I just had all the .book and .fm files
in the same directory. Cross-PDF links worked fine so long as the PDFs
were in the same directory.

There used to be a bug that all the .fm files had to be open for the
cross-PDF links to work but I think that was fixed.

Make sure that generated lists are being regenerated when you update the book:

1) Select Edit > Update Book.
2) In the Update Book dialog, make sure that Generate Table of Contents, Lists,
and Indexes is selected.
3) Click Update.

Offhand, I can't think of any other reason why page numbering would be
incorrect starting in the middle of a file. But if that doesn't fix it, maybe
somebody else will have an idea.

"Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off"

2013-07-24 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
I don't have any difficulties using Courier in FrameMaker today. :)

However, some years ago, I switched to Consolas for fixed-width text in my
documents. It looks _much_ cleaner on sample code, in PDF files and on a
display screen, etc., than any of the Courier fonts available.

You might check to see if the company will allow it instead of Courier.

Yeah, ATM has been obsolete for quite some time. The statement is at best sadly
out of date (and I suspect it was only ever partially true). Furthermore,
Courier is not and has never been a registered trademark. The Courier typeface
was created for IBM, which chose not to legally protect either the name or the
design. Anyone can use the Courier name and design.

TOC has incorrect page numbers

2013-07-24 Thread Fred Ridder
Richard has identified the most obvious potential cause for the problem you
describe.

But another possible cause is the change in the font metrics that occurs when
you change from one printer driver to another. (This is the reasons for the
infamous "Font information has changed" warning message.) FrameMaker obtains
information on the precise width of every character in every font used in the
document from the printer driver. When you change to a different driver (for
example from a physical printer to the Adobe PDF virtual printer for PDF
generation), there will always be some differences in the dimensions. These
differences are usually very small and insignificant, but if you will have a
line of text that is almost exactly the width of the text column even a tiny
difference in metrics can make a visible difference on the page. If one printer
has metrics that are a tiny bit smaller for some character(s) the line of
characters might fit on a single line on the page; but if the metrics are a
tiny bit larger on a different printer the line may be forced to break. A
couple of additional line breaks on a page may push a table row or a graphic to
the next page prematurely, and before you know it all your headings are on a
different page than when you started. This used to happen all the time when
printers usually had much lower resolution and the differences in font metrics
were therefore larger in magnitude. There used to be a good reason for Frame's
"Font information has changed" warning, and you may have run afoul of it here.
(Note that this phenomenon was one of the reasons why Word documents used to be
notorious for having pagination differences on different computers and
sometimes between on-screen and printed versions.)

If this is indeed what is going on, the solution is to switch to the printer
driver you will use for the final output *before* you do the final Update Book
operation to set the final pagination and generate the TOC to match. Or use a
workflow or a plug-in like Sundorne's SetPrinter to *always* use Adobe PDF as
the default printer for FrameMaker (assuming PDF is your final output).

Not just the separator line, but also the space above the footnotes is lost. In
Footnote Properties, the Max. Height Per Column

Greetings everyone,

I'm setting up a chapter template for a book. I changed the default paratag for
footnotes from Footnote to ZZ_Footnote, renaming the
tag (Paragraph Designer) and making the corresponding change in the Footnote
Properties (Format > Document > footnote Properties).
The moment I make that change, the line disappears.

Can anyone suggest how I might keep the renamed paratag and retrieve the lost
footnote separator?

Thanks!

FM8: Book design/page layout - Best page size settings

2013-07-24 Thread VLM TechSubs
Greetings everyone,

I'm helping ghost-write a book. It will appear in a standard 6" x 9" format.
From examining similar books, I have the margins set at
.75" in all 4 sides, at least for now. My question is this: Is it best to set
the page size to 6x9 now, then use registration marks
when printing it out on 8.5 x 11" paper? Or is some other approach better? In
all likelihood, I am the only one who will ever see
the Frame file. Everyone else will see either Word (rtf presumably) or PDF.

I appreciate any input!

Thanks,

Elchanan

The 2013 Consumer Opinion poll results are available

As you may know, I've run the Consumer Opinion poll about product

The free version

analysis. It also contains all the comments from both this year and from
last year. This lets you see a large group of comments about what people
think about product instructions and products that they purchase.

The comments alone should give you a place to start analyzing where and how

TOC has incorrect page numbers

2013-07-24 Thread Craig Ede
For troubleshooting, first make sure you clear the TOC entries from the
previous generate so that you know there is nothing that is remaining in the
TOC that you aren't sure came from the current generate.

If that doesn't result in something useful, check the box that creates
hyperlinks in the TOC and then generate it. Use the feature that allow you
to jump to the hyperlink destination (Cntrl-Alt-Click, all at the same time,
on the TOC entry) and see if the page you land on is on the page that it
says in the TOC. That should give some good clues as to what is happening.

Keep us posted.

Subject: TOC has incorrect page numbers

Hello FFs (Fellow Framers).

This morning I discovered that the page numbering that is showing in my TOC
is incorrect. The numbers are correct for a couple of chapters and at the
beginning of the 3rd chapter. Then, in the middle of the 3rd chapter, the
numbers are off by a page (should be 32 and is showing 31 in the TOC). I'm
only using Headings 1 and 2 in the TOC and it's a Heading 1 where it starts
to go south.

This is unstructured Frame 7.2 on a Windows 7 machine.

Can someone give me some ideas as to what to look for? I would have an idea
if the numbering was wrong starting at the beginning of a chapter, just not
starting mid-chapter.

Thank you for your help in advance.

FM 8: Lost my footnote separator line

2013-07-24 Thread Craig Ede
I had not seen your query previous to this posting.

This spacing is controlled by the TableFootnote box that exists by default
on the reference page (usually the first one). If it has been deleted you
can just create a new blank portrait document (File>New>Document>Portrait).
Go the first reference page and select the dotted line box under the Table
Footnote label. Copy it and paste it onto your reference page. You will have
to name it TableFootnote (the name is important). Then select and copy over
the label in the same way. You can't do them at the same time.

Not just the separator line, but also the space above the footnotes is lost.
In Footnote Properties, the Max. Height Per Column remains set to the
default, 4". There must be some other setting somewhere, of which I am
unaware. I hope ..

Greetings everyone,

I'm setting up a chapter template for a book. I changed the default paratag
for footnotes from Footnote to ZZ_Footnote, renaming the tag (Paragraph
Designer) and making the corresponding change in the Footnote Properties
(Format > Document > footnote Properties). The moment I make that change,
the line disappears.

Can anyone suggest how I might keep the renamed paratag and retrieve the
lost footnote separator?

Thanks!

Re: Auto-rotate pages in PDF

2013-07-24 Thread Chris Coggins
We had this same problem and our solution was to set the graphics
resolution to 600dpi, and set the paper size to match or exceed the largest
page size in the FM file in the advanced print options. That solved the
cut-off problems for us.

Re: Auto-rotate pages in PDF (Art Campbell)

2013-07-24 Thread Jay Mahler
Art,
Thanks for the suggestion, but the PDF version is out of my control. This is a
document going to a large Federal agency, and that is what they require because
of their old systems. Besides, I ran a test with PDF Compatibility set to
"Acrobat 8.0 (PDF 1.7)," and it made no difference.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

Have you tried a different Acrobat level? Compatibility with version 5
would be 6 generations old -- pre XP, I think.
I think you'd be safe with v 8 or 9, and it may make a difference just
because so many features have been added since v 5 that the inserted code
may be obtuse.

RE: Multi-Volume Documents

Re: Multi-Volume Documents

RE: "Do not use the Courier(r) font when Adobe Type Manager(r) is turned off"

2013-07-24 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
I don't have any difficulties using Courier in FrameMaker today. :)

However, some years ago, I switched to Consolas for fixed-width text in my
documents. It looks _much_ cleaner on sample code, in PDF files and on a
display screen, etc., than any of the Courier fonts available.

You might check to see if the company will allow it instead of Courier.

David

Yeah, ATM has been obsolete for quite some time. The statement is at best sadly
out of date (and I suspect it was only ever partially true). Furthermore,
Courier is not and has never been a registered trademark. The Courier typeface
was created for IBM, which chose not to legally protect either the name or the
design. Anyone can use the Courier name and design.

Ditto here, only Monospace 821 (Bitstream).

RE: TOC has incorrect page numbers

FM 8: Lost my footnote separator line

Not just the separator line, but also the space above the footnotes is lost. In
Footnote Properties, the Max. Height Per Column
remains set to the default, 4". There must be some other setting somewhere, of
which I am unaware. I hope ..

Subject: FM8: Lost my footnote separator line

Greetings everyone,

I'm setting up a chapter template for a book. I changed the default paratag for
footnotes from Footnote to ZZ_Footnote, renaming the
tag (Paragraph Designer) and making the corresponding change in the Footnote
Properties (Format > Document > footnote Properties).
The moment I make that change, the line disappears.

Can anyone suggest how I might keep the renamed paratag and retrieve the lost
footnote separator?

Thanks!

Elchanan

2013-07-24 Thread Sharon Burton
As you may know, I've run the Consumer Opinion poll about product
instructions for the last 2 years. The updated results are available now in
two versions on my website(http://bit.ly/15K8rAK):

The free version
shows you the data, compiled into tables and graphs. The
free version doesn't include any discussion or analysis of the content. The
free version also doesn't include the comments people made for nearly all
questions.

The
paid version* is a reasonable $6.99 and includes discussion and
analysis. It also contains all the comments from both this year and from
last year. This lets you see a large group of comments about what people
think about product instructions and products that they purchase.

The comments alone should give you a place to start analyzing where and how
you may be making your customers angry and upset.

I'll probably do a webinar in the next 6 weeks talking about these results
and what I think they mean for us tech comm professionals.

* This ebook is available on all localized Amazon sites.

In case you think I'm tracking your email when you go to my website or in
some way am going to monitor you and then in some way make money, I'm not.
For a complete discussion about how much money I actually lose running these
polls, go to A Note About These Polls in this post:

Hope this is helpful to you guys!
