Frame 8 - Acrobat 8 crash

2007-10-04 Thread Dov Isaacs
Based upon what we know, it is highly unlikely that the Acrobat 8.1
update has anything to do with the problems of "save as PDF" with
FrameMaker 8. Problems appear to be in FrameMaker 8. Update for
FrameMaker 8 under development now.

Adobe Unveils Technical Communication Suite

2007-09-24 Thread Dov Isaacs
( BW)(CA-ADOBE-SYSTEMS)(ADBE) Adobe Unveils Technical Communication
Suite

Integrated Toolkit for Technical Writers Includes Major Upgrade to
RoboHelp

Business Editors/Technology Writers

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 25, 2007--Adobe Systems
Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe(R) Technical
Communication Suite software, a first-of-a-kind, integrated solution
for authoring, managing, and publishing technical information and
training content across multiple formats and languages. Using the
Adobe Technical Communication Suite, technical communicators and
instructional designers can create powerful documentation, eLearning
courses and user assistance programs containing both traditional text
and graphics along with rich media, including Adobe Flash(R) Player
compatible video and 3D.

The suite includes Adobe RoboHelp(R) 7, a major upgrade to Adobe's
help system and knowledge base authoring tool, as well as Adobe
FrameMaker(R) 8, Adobe Captivate(R) 3 and Adobe Acrobat(R) 3D Version
8 software. Product and workflow integration and support for rich
media formats -- including Adobe Flash Player compatible video, SWF,
MP3 and AVI files as well as industry standards, such as Adobe
Portable Document Format (PDF), XML and Darwin Information Typing
Architecture (DITA) -- empower authors to deliver compelling
information, save time and reduce discrepancies in content.

"Adobe's leadership in the industry puts us in a unique position
to deliver a completely new product, targeted squarely at technical
communicators and instructional designers," said Naresh Gupta, senior
vice president, Print and Classic Publishing at Adobe. "The Technical
Communication Suite provides all the tools publishers need to take
technical communication to the next level with dramatically improved
workflows and rich features like video, animations, 3D and Unicode
support."

Inside the Technical Communication Suite

Introduced today, RoboHelp 7 delivers major new features enabling
technical communicators to author, manage, and publish engaging
content for embedded help systems and standalone knowledge bases. For
the first time, technical communicators can easily update their online
help systems with information authored in FrameMaker 8, without the
need to re-import files for each update. The new release also adds
Unicode support for publishing in multiple languages.

Automated wizards and topic templates allow users to incorporate
standard and advanced help features, including table of contents,
indexes, glossaries, graphics, sound, video, simulations and
navigation. Authors can generate multiple tables of content and apply
conditional tags, index items, folders, and tailor output for specific
purposes and formats, such as HTML, Adobe PDF and FlashHelp(R).
RoboHelp 7 also supports a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) allowing
easy copy and paste editing across topics. Additional new features
include an updated and customizable user interface, enhancements to
the HTML editor, and improved navigation and search features. For more
details please visit www.adobe.com/products/robohelp.

Launched in July 2007, FrameMaker 8 is a complete authoring and
publishing tool that combines the simplicity of word processing with
the power of XML. The new version adds support for 3D, DITA, XML and
Unicode. With the integration of Adobe Captivate 3 technical authors
can deliver high-impact information with quizzes, visual product
demonstrations and simulations - all without the need for multimedia
development skills. Acrobat 3D version 8 delivers a complete and more
secure way to collaborate with extended teams on 3D designs via Adobe
PDF documents. Technical communicators can easily manipulate and
incorporate interactive 3D models without having to purchase CAD
software.

Pricing and Availability

Adobe Technical Communication Suite will be available for
Microsoft(R) Windows Vista(TM) and Windows(R) XP and is expected to
ship by the end of October 2007 at an estimated price of US$1,599.
Users can upgrade for an estimated price of US$999 if they have prior
versions of Adobe Captivate, FrameMaker or RoboHelp. To learn more
about the suite please visit
www.adobe.com/technicalcommunicationsuite.

That does NOT necessarily work in many cases, especially EPS

RE: PDF question

2007-09-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
Jim,

It is certainly no setting in the PostScript driver or Distiller.
Without knowing your entire workflow and seeing the full contents
of your template, it would be very difficult to know what is going
on and how you are actually getting your desired effect.

The "color" versus "black and white" setting in the driver only
controls part of the PostScript generation, not all of it (and
certainly NOT any passthrough EPS). Conceivably, one could have
a Distiller "prologue.ps" file that redefines all color setting
PostScript definitions to cause black and white / grayscale, but
that certainly isn't anything we ship with any product.

2007-09-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
Actually, there is/was no such thing as "Adobe PrintMe"!

I assume of course that you are referring to the function
that WAS in Acrobat 6 and 7 for printing.

That was actually a function provided by EFI (Electronics
for Imaging) that allowed you to access printers on their
internet-based network of EFI-managed printers. Adobe provided
the button, but had no other involvement in that feature. It
is not supported in Acrobat 8.

Adobe PrintMe Gone Away?

2007-09-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
Actually, there is/was no such thing as "Adobe PrintMe"!

I assume of course that you are referring to the function
that WAS in Acrobat 6 and 7 for printing.

That was actually a function provided by EFI (Electronics
for Imaging) that allowed you to access printers on their
internet-based network of EFI-managed printers. Adobe provided
the button, but had no other involvement in that feature. It
is not supported in Acrobat 8.

If you in fact go over the two activation limit due to
equipment failure, call the phone number that appears on
your screen to talk with the Adobe Activation Center.
They are very understanding about such situations and
unless you abuse the privilege (such as having a hardware
failure every week), they will add an activation to your
copy via the activation server. There was quite a bit of
angst about the activation when it first appeared on
Photoshop 8 on Windows and then on CS2 for all products
and platforms. In reality, things worked out well with
relatively few hiccups. Most of the big complainers were
in fact users who previously tried to install one copy
of a program on a whole fleet of computers.

The activation mechanism supports two activations such
that you can use the software per the EULA. Note that if
you need to move from a system to another (i.e., a third
system), there is a function to DE-activate on a system
which adds one back to your available activation count.
That system does work pretty well.

PDFMaker as part of Acrobat 7 is not particularly problematic.
On the other hand, depending on the joboptions chosen, you certainly
can produce PDF files that can't be properly handled by older versions
of Acrobat and Reader.

That does not violate the rules assuming that the "Acrobat 7.0

Without seeing one of these PDF files that cause "problems" it
would be very difficult to know what is really going on. For what
it is worth, some of the current "clone" PDF readers (including the
Mac previewer) have problems with perfectly valid PDF files from
Acrobat (or exported from InDesign and Illustrator). So ...
I suspect you are doing about the best you can by urging users
to newer versions of Reader. Note that if I was saving PDF files
for the general public and I didn't have need for features such
as JPEG 2000 compression and some of more sophisticated internal
compression of objects in PDF 1.5 (Acrobat 6), I would save to
Acrobat 5 compatibility.

My advice, for what it is worth, is to contact Adobe Customer
Support ASAP instead of relying on the guesses of those on the
list as to what might be legal, what Adobe might allow, etc.
Explain your situation and see whether they might be able to
make some reasonable accommodation for you, especially if you
are on some volume purchase plan. If necessary, ask for a
supervisor.

If necessary, ask for a
supervisor.

Multiple versions of Acrobat on same system?

2007-08-05 Thread Dov Isaacs
Although (very unfortunately), it is PHYSICALLY possible to
have multiple versions of Adobe Acrobat concurrently installed,
concurrent versions of Adobe Reader concurrently installed, or
some combination of versions of both Acrobat and Reader installed,
the truth is that the architecture of these programs and the
underlying operating system services used by same really only
fully supports installation of only one version of EITHER Adobe
Acrobat or Adobe Reader on one system at one time.

I am sure we will get the inevitable responses from members of
this list that boast about how they have multiple versions and/or
mixtures of Acrobat and Reader concurrently installed and somehow
get some or most of the functionality to work for them. On the
other hand, there are a tremendous number of problems reported to
Adobe that are suddenly cleared up when the user's systems are
scraped of all concurrent versions of Acrobat and Reader, replaced
by a single version of one or another. (Note that by "Acrobat" I
mean any and all pieces of it including the Distiller, the AdobePDF
PostScript printer driver instance, and the viewing program!)

But, some list members will complain, how do I know what the
recipients of my PDF file will see on their systems if I also
don't have a copy of Reader installed, or perhaps multiple versions
of Reader and Acrobat installed? The response to that is to have
test systems (or separate test partitions of your one system) that
have minimal software installations (especially fonts) and a copy
of the target version of Adobe Reader. That is the only way to
truly simulate the user experience. For that matter, old, slower
systems are even more appropriate!

RE: Frame 7.2 and Acrobat 7

2007-08-03 Thread Dov Isaacs
It in fact does not make a difference. Just make sure that you
don't let FrameMaker 7.2 install its version of Distiller. Of course
you should also not have any other version of Acrobat (or for that
matter, any version of Reader) concurrently installed. Since this is
a "new laptop," this normally should not be a concern. However, many
laptops come with Adobe Reader preinstalled. If this is the case,
uninstall it first and reboot.

RE: right to left languages

2007-07-26 Thread Dov Isaacs
It certainly would be great, but such support is really
non-trivial to properly implement.

Claiming "support" of Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew, requires
full support for context alternates, special ligatures,
various vowel and vocalization marks, mixed left-to-right and
right-to-left text handling based on language and character set,
as well as spelling and hyphenation support.

Don't count on this support anytime in the near to midterm
future.

Yes, Microsoft Word (Windows only) provides this support.
InDesign ME offers this support (both platforms); maybe future
versions of InDesign might also natively support right-to-left.

RE: FrameMaker in Hebrew

2007-07-08 Thread Dov Isaacs
(1) The current version of FrameMaker is not
a Unicode application and cannot readily map the
Hebrew Unicode character set to FrameMaker's own
internal character set.

(2) Even if you were to map the character set,
FrameMaker does not have the ability to deal with
right-to-left languages including Hebrew, Arabic,
and Farsi.

FrameMaker does not work in Hebrew!

You absolutely couldn't. That is the limit of
the technology. Once one has hard copy, it can always
be reproduced, albeit at reduced quality.

The same thing is true with the screen. If I show the
pixels on the screen, I can programmatically prevent
screen shots, but I cannot prevent someone from photographing
the screen!

The trouble with this whole problem is that we are

RE: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
Jacob,

Good to hear from you.

(1) No, I wasn't referring to "leading" but rather the
exact positioning and amount of space between text characters
on a line of text. Obviously 72dpi is going to look very
poor. I normally recommend a setting of 600dpi for all
layout work (and then always creating PDF with the Adobe PDF
PostScript printer driver instance set to 600dpi) to assure
no reflow problems - a big problem with Microsoft Office and
probably much less of a problem with FrameMaker (Shlomo says
he has seen this; I haven't so far). I do not advise going
below the 300dpi setting. For most FrameMaker type documents,
any fine spacing quality loss at 300dpi compared to 600dpi
or 1200dpi would normally be quite acceptable.

(2) So far we haven't seen the NUMBER of fonts as the key
variable as to what causes corruption or too large a
font cache file. As I have indicated in early communications,
my systems routinely run with about 1400 to 1600 active
typefaces, all concurrently installed.

One area that I would have others look at is the size of
the virtual memory file. Disable automatic paging files
and enable a constant paging file size of at least twice
the amount of real memory in the system which in reality
means a four to six gigabyte paging file. I am only
speculating about this, but you never know.

(3) With regards to the GDI calls, FrameMaker's code still
uses very old (Windows 3.x) GDI calls that are very resolution
dependent and that can yield multiplication results that
overflow 16 bits if you are talking about higher resolutions
and larger page sizes. As I indicated there is a known problem
due to these overflows that cause text drop out on systems
that don't suffer from the problem fixed by the font cache
deletion hack. (For example, this problem is consistent on
all systems for page size "tabloid" for 2400 dpi for the
same document!) The other problem occurs when this overflow
should not be a problem. The problem is that the GDI calls
used by FrameMaker are not really being maintained by Microsoft;
it's likely that there are bugs that have infested that area
of the code that are somehow tickled by FrameMaker and its
interesting remapping of character sets. But we really don't
know what is causing the problems.

(4) Because we can't debug problems we can't reproduce,
this whole issue is exceptionally frustrating not only to
the limited number of customers who repeatedly experience
it on particular computer systems, but also to the FrameMaker
support and development organization.

RE: Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

2007-06-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
I'll endorse Art's response here! And both add to it and
refine it a tad ...

There are two distinct sets of "missing text" scenarios
that we know about.

The first such scenario is a associated with larger page
sizes and higher resolutions. As you go beyond US Letter
and A4 paper sizes, field overflow associated with intermediate
byproduct of the product of multiplying a page location by
the resolution can readily overflow a 16-bit signed field
and cause the "location" of text or other graphic objects
to go negative (off the page). This scenario is totally
repeatable between systems if you use the same settings.
The cure is to either cut the resolution value (as you
can readily do with printing to the Adobe PDF PostScript
printer driver instance or by cutting the page size.
Generally speaking, the former is easiest and safest (esp.
when creating PDF). Lowering the resolution down to 300dpi
only affects microspacing for line justification.

The second scenario is as Art describes it. We have heard
of customers experiencing it on some systems but not others
using "allegely" the same document and configuration. We
have even seen internally at Adobe, but cannot reproduce
it at will. On most systems, deleting the FNTCACHE.DAT file
followed by a reboot will "solve" the problem, at least for
a while. I have suggested that systems with this problem
be fitted with a logout script that automatically does this
delete every time you "bring down" your system and thus
proactively avoid repeats. Note however, I have heard of at
least one system for which this hack did not work.
Why does this happen? And why does deleting the font cache
fix it? Don't really know! It has nothing to do with Acrobat
or the Adobe PDF PostScript driver instance. Since application
programs, including FrameMaker, do not and cannot directly
access the FNTCACHE.DAT file, I can only guess that whatever
is causing this is the byproduct of FrameMaker having its own
character set and of its use of old Windows GDI calls for
display and print.

Note that from our experience, the number of fonts on a
system doesn't seem to be a common vector for this
problem to occur. I typically have more than 1400 typefaces
installed oncurrently on each of my systems and for better
or worse, I'v never been able to duplicate the problem
on these systems!

We will need to see whether the next major release of
FrameMaker resolves the problem once and for all! :-)

Acrobat 8/8.1 Dropping Text in PDF

RE: Cannot launch distiller to create PDF file

2007-06-15 Thread Dov Isaacs
If in fact it works "sometimes" but not others, the problem
has nothing to do with having multiple distillers on your
system. If you installed the standalone version of Distiller
that came with FrameMaker, it would be available to uninstall
from the Add/Remove programs control panel.

I would suggest that for reliability, you print to the
Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance in lieu of
using the "save as PDF" feature. Please advise if that works
consistently.

RE: Acrobat 8.1 stops FM print

2007-06-11 Thread Dov Isaacs
Actually, I can repeat the problem. Has nothing to do
with a missing FILE: port (for better or worse). Apparently
something else has changed in the interface between the
Distiller and the AdobePDF printer driver instance and the
system with Acrobat 8.1 (as opposed to Acrobat 8.0). In the
meantime, you should (famous last words) be able to simply
print to the Adobe PDF PostScript printer driver instance
from FrameMaker to achieve a similar objective.

I'll see what's going on here at Adobe.

RE: QUESTION FOR FONT GURUS

2007-06-07 Thread Dov Isaacs
Michael,

(1) When you create the PDF file from FrameMaker,
does the PDF file view correctly on the screen? Do the
two fonts that you believe have the same XUID display
correctly in Acrobat or in Reader?

(2) Assuming that the PDF file does display correctly,
what happens if you try to print the PDF file to a
laser printer (not a prepress RIP) that has Adobe PostScript?
Problems or no problems?

The answer to your last question is that both Distiller
and Adobe PostScript-based printers are RIPs (Raster Image
Processors). If the PDF file displays correctly in Reader
or Acrobat and the file prints correctly to an Adobe PostScript
-based laser printer, then the problem is not the fonts or the
resultant PDF file, but rather, that RIP you are referring to.

Advise as to (1) and (2) above and we can proceed from there.

RE: First Time Framer!

Or maybe you want an InDesign >= 6 that supports all
the wonderful FrameMaker features that aren't already
in InDesign. That would solve a whole bunch of other
problems such as Macintosh support, CMYK + spot color
support, transparency support, etc. :-)

First Time Framer!

2007-05-30 Thread Dov Isaacs
Or maybe you want an InDesign >= 6 that supports all
the wonderful FrameMaker features that aren't already
in InDesign. That would solve a whole bunch of other
problems such as Macintosh support, CMYK + spot color
support, transparency support, etc. :-)

RE: Character switching FM/Distiller

2007-05-21 Thread Dov Isaacs
For what it is worth, there is no such thing as an
"Adobe PostScript Driver," at least for the current
versions of Windows. The driver used for the Adobe PDF
PostScript printer driver instance and for most printers
supporting PostScript is in fact the PSCRIPT5 driver
distributed and maintained by Microsoft as part of
Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and
Windows Vista. Although Adobe worked with Microsoft to
originally develop that driver nearly eight years ago,
Microsoft has had full responsibility for it ever since.

The problems with FrameMaker's poor character set support
cannot be readily solved without full Unicode support.
You will NOT see such support in any FrameMaker 7.x (or
earlier) versions.

RE: Missing Characters in PDF

2007-05-16 Thread Dov Isaacs
Yes, this is indeed a known issue, although at this point
we don't know exactly what the cause of the problem is.

We do know that (1) it is not necessarily repeatable between
two identically-configured systems or even on the same system
and (2) there is a hack to at least temporarily "fix" the
problem.

This fix is as follows:

(a) Exit all applications

(b) Delete file

(c) Reboot

Upon rebooting, the system font cache is rebuilt as needed by
Windows. And according to those who have tried this "fix," the
problem is gone, at least for a while.

Since there is nothing that FrameMaker as a program can do to
corrupt that system file or even open it, the problems are
probably secondary to some issue associated with FrameMaker's
novel use of its own character set in combination with standard
Windows GDI calls.

If you really want to be defensive, one thing you could do would
be to write a script that deletes that font cache file every time
you power down your system.

Let us know if this solves the issue for you.

RE: Double-spacing a PDF output doc from a structured Frame book

2007-05-15 Thread Dov Isaacs
Alas, there is no such thing as a double-spacing control
for PDF. PDF is a final form document format. The relationship
between your FrameMaker document and the resultant PostScript
and PDF files is that of matching the format 1:1 as much as
possible. Your only way to "double space" is to change
templates or more likely, paragraph styles.

OK, MOMZA (spell it any number of ways) is a Yiddish
version of "momzer" - literally a "bastard."

What was funning about this situation was that we
actually got to meet the nice mid-America couple who
drove their car with that Missouri license plate.
(They would remind you of the couple in American Gothic!)
Turns out that one of their children called their mom
"momza" - none of them knew why we (a few of us visiting
from the East Coast at the time) were laughing hysterically.

For those of you who are still wondering what this
was about ... "tzurot" means "troubles" in Hebrew.
The Yiddish equivalent is "tzuros" or "tsuris" which
is also "troubles" as in "big time troubles!"

However, the more interesting license plate I saw in
rural Missouri over 25 years ago was MOMZA.

Geeky Friday Humor

2007-04-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
For those of you who are still wondering what this
was about ... "tzurot" means "troubles" in Hebrew.
The Yiddish equivalent is "tzuros" or "tsuris" which
is also "troubles" as in "big time troubles!"

However, the more interesting license plate I saw in
rural Missouri over 25 years ago was MOMZA.

No change to the FrameMaker Server product, but obviously
your IT department is trying to setup a workflow beyond
that which your previous company implemented (even if the

RE: QuarkXPress to FrameMaker

2007-04-19 Thread Dov Isaacs
The filter for QuarkXPress import into FrameMaker was
hacked from the equivalent InDesign filter and only
supports QuarkXPress 3.x and 4.x files. Newer files
(5, 6, and 7) cannot be opened in FrameMaker due to the
fact that Quark encrypts their version 5, 6, and 7
documents and any software that attempts to break that
encryption without permission is breaking the DMCA
(the Digital Millenium Copyright Act).

Make no such assumption, especially when dealing with
eBay. The prices mentioned reflect (1) someone has
genuine product obtained illicitly - use your imagination,
(2) copied CDs with either a "cracked" software version

Remember that prices that are too good to be true are the

Tina,

Bubbamisa!

Good try, but absolutely groundless. The "optimize for
portability" hack was put into the Windows driver to deal
with some applications, FrameMaker NOT being among them,
that injected their own PostScript into the driver's output
stream improperly, interfering with the current graphics
state of the PostScript job. It also makes a bit of a
difference how fonts and procedure definitions (what you
are calling "a shorthand version of PostScript" are put
into the job, but certainly not how they are used.

If in fact, use of the "optimize for portability" option
causes something to print that doesn't otherwise print
from FrameMaker, you are dealing with either (1) a very
traif EPS file (EPS file improperly constructed, not
following the rules for EPS files), (2) an otherwise terribly
misconfigured printer driver or print itself or (3) a very
crufty PostScript RIP / printer.
