FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat X ... Training Books

2012-03-06 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Good evening my fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats:

My team and I are going to upgrade to both FrameMaker 10 and Acrobat X

I'm looking for training books (written material) on both subjects.

In addition, I'm looking for an opinion of whis is out there. I know finding
training
materials is a shot in the dark but sharing opinions about this material is
also equally
important as well.

Case in point:
I was extremely disappointed with Adobe FrameMaker 9 Classroom in a Book. I
don't recommend
using this as a training resource as it just doesn't cut for both content
and/or process.

...that's why I'm searching for not only WHAT is out there but your take on it
as well.

So if my fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats can assist, I'd surely appreciate
it.

Thank you

>From the city so nice, they named it twice: New York, New York

Distilling Mixed Sizes

2011-09-01 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Live from New York!

Good afternoon fellow Frame Templars and Acrobats

I'm looking for that proverbial magic bullet whereby I can distill FrameMaker
pages of
different sizes without chopping them down to size.

First, the system:

Frame 9 unstructured
Acrobat 9 Pro
Windows XP SP3

Next, The setup:

A FrameMaker book, including 13 chapters, 7 appendices, and several key indices.
Mostly a 8.5 X 11 inch with about 6 pages embedded with 8.5 X 14.

After using every setting in Distiller, all pages are distilled into 8.5 X 11,
literally
"chopping" off the tops and bottoms of the 8.5 X 14 pages.

I've done this before and didn't change any settings, so I'm thinking there has
to be a bug
somewhere either in Acrobat or due to a recent Windows SP3 upgrade.

If there are any suggestions, please let me know.

All the best, standing tall, sword and shield

Eduardo

Linking Problem......solved

2011-08-02 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
I think it was the "way" I used the marker

I've been using "message URL" to make the jump

Instead, on a "Hail Mary Pass", I used this:

openlink //jetblue.com/Docs/Manuals/jbdocs/MANUAL SUPPLEMENTS/Onboard Delay
Escalation
Policy (ODEP).pdf

notice how it now reads "openlink" to make the jump

.and it works!.what a lesson I learned today

Thank you to all who offered their assistance! Much appreciated Fellow Framers!

Good afternoon

address contains backslashes ?\? and NOT forward slashes ?/?

Problem: whenever I write the syntax to go to the hypertext link?...FrameMaker
does funny

Example:

message URL \\jetblue.com\Docs\Manuals\jbdocs\Flight Operations Training Manual

becomes the following when I click ?Edit Hypertext Marker??..
message URL \\jetblue.com?ocs\smanuals\jbdocs?light Operations Training Manual

I think the use of the backslash is causing this?.or??is it a bug???

So I?m trying to use any tool native to FrameMaker to keep the link intact.

FrameMaker 9 Paragraph Designer Problem

2010-08-12 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Good morning to my fellow Frame Templars

Here's the setup: WXP, SP3, Frame 9.0p237 (unstructured)

Problem:

At any given time, the Paragraph Designer "quits." It displays when called
upon and works
and that's all well and good but without notice suddenly becomes
non-functioning.

This happens without warning and under any one of given scenarios: single
screen, multiple
screens, you name it.

Anyone have a clue?

Thanks

A Graphics Library...Why?

2010-06-22 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Thanks Edward. You and fellow Frame Templars have given me a bit to go on.

The procedure is therethat's not the voidit's the "why" behind it.

Why am I doing it?
Is there a regulatory requirement?
Is this "auditable" (is that a word?)
Is there a Return on Investment (ROI)?

Again, so many thanksstill open to suggestions

All the best

Eduardo

Thanks Edward. You and fellow Frame Templars have given me a bit to go on.

The procedure is therethat's not the voidit's the "why" behind it.

Why am I doing it?
Is there a regulatory requirement?
Is this "auditable" (is that a word?)
Is there a Return on Investment (ROI)?

Again, so many thanksstill open to suggestions

All the best

Eduardo

A Graphics Library...Why?

2010-06-21 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good evening fellow Framers and Frame Templars

I've built a specification for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
regarding building a Graphics Library (call it a database, tracker,
whatever).

One thing that gnaws at this old writer is the standard question: Why?

I could use reasons such as:
Traceability
Locating Graphics
Documentation Mapping

It's just eluding me as to a rock-solid answer on this.

Just reaching out to you all for some input or a resource I can tap. I have
the procedure and policy and framework (no pun intended) in place but in
doing this, I also know internal auditors will ask the pervasive question,
"Why?"

Have a safe and interesting evening.

Active Areas from Frame-Generated Index(es)

2010-06-01 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Good afternoon from JFK Airport...raining and overcast

First the setup: WXP, Frame 8 (Unstructured) and Acrobat 9 Professional

Now the dilemma:

In generating an index, there's no problem with the creation and "breakout" of
different
levels:

Level Page Number

L1IOM ... X-X
  L2IOM . Y-Y
   L3IOM Z-Z

The problem stems from the resulting PDF where the active area is "drawn" (for
lack of a
better word) around the leader dots and page number and NOT the text in the
respective IOM.

I know there was a "fix" for this quite a while ago, but for the life of me, I
can't
remember what that was.

Anyone out there willing to help out a fellow Frame Templar???

FrameMaker and XML Training Resources

2010-05-05 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
I have a lot of unstructured Frame experience. Even did some work in the
SGML/XML arena.

What I seek are two things:

1. Is there definitive guidance on taking me from the basics of XML and beyond
with an eye
solely dedicated to FrameMaker?

2. Is there also guidance on the adaptation of XML data to a Content
Management System?

Any help is, as always, appreciated.

Adobe's New Corporate Strategies

2010-04-27 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
My two cents...if only that:

So what is it we seek?

and

Does Adobe Systems listen?

As for me, I'm perfectly content with the latest version of Frame. I can only
take so much
technology upgrade.

Opinion is my own.

O.T. Problem with Adobe Acrobat Catalog (or Index if you prefer)

2010-01-27 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade Sr.
Good morning fellow Acrobats

First, the setup: Windows XP, Acrobat 9

Now, the problem. I'm indexing a driving containing literally thousands of
PDFs (3,474 to
be exact) and until upgrading to Acrobat 9, never had a problem updating the
index (or
catalog).

Today, I tried updating the index and get these messages:

Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F080TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F082TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F084TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F089.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
and continues on ad-nauseum

Now the puzzler: The documents are entitled XX.pdf but do not have the
"joboptions"
piece appended to them.

The preferences have been edited to include indexing from other drives, so that
shouldn't
factor.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there some sort of update we should
grab?

I can't go back to the previous version and don't want to either.

Thank you

All the best

Eduardo

O.T. Problem with Adobe Acrobat Catalog (or Index if you prefer)

2010-01-27 Thread Eduardo F . Cidade Sr .
Good morning fellow Acrobats

First, the setup: Windows XP, Acrobat 9

Now, the problem. I'm indexing a driving containing literally thousands of
PDFs (3,474 to
be exact) and until upgrading to Acrobat 9, never had a problem updating the
index (or
catalog).

Today, I tried updating the index and get these messages:

Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F080TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F082TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F084TR.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
Could not open document : D:\XX\INFORMATION NOTICES\Information Notices
Archive\Expired
Flight Ops\General Information Notices\2006-F089.pdf-High Quality
Print.joboptions
and continues on ad-nauseum

Now the puzzler: The documents are entitled XX.pdf but do not have the
"joboptions"
piece appended to them.

The preferences have been edited to include indexing from other drives, so that
shouldn't
factor.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there some sort of update we should
grab?

I can't go back to the previous version and don't want to either.

Thank you

All the best

Eduardo

RE: [f2a] A Frame Problem for the Record Books

Patrick

Thank you very much for the quick and ernest reply

I had already tried that but thought I missed a step (hey, after a 12 hour
workday, it happens)

..it didn't work.

It has to be something in the text from page 79 onward.something that is
embedded in there that is making this so quirky as to defy explanation.

I will keep investigating, but am turning in for the night very soon..gotta
keep up with the shuteye..

Thank you again

Eduardo,

My guess is that somehow or other, you have disconnected text frames. I
tested it, and disconnected text frames can have the same flow tag.

Regardless of how it happened, try reconnecting them:

1. Ctrl-click to select the first text frame.

2. Ctrl-click to select the second text frame.

3. Select Format > Customize Layout > Connect Text Frames. (I have Frame
7.2; may be different in your version.)

Option B: Cut and paste the disconnected text at the end of page 79, then
delete the leftover pages.

Good evening fellow Framers

Here's one I've NEVER encountered before.

First, the setup: WXP, Frame 8 (unstructured)

As I'm developing a document I'm proceeding from page to page, no
problem.

Suddenly, I reach the end (or I THOUGHT) it was the end on page 79
of a 90 page document, you know at the end of a Frame file, you
encounter the "end of file" symbol, sort of a "double-S"

When what to my wandering eyes should appear?more text on page
80! It's the next page which I cannot, for the life of me, get to
behave or come forward to page 79. It's as if there is a different,
separate, text flow so I checked for a "Flow: B" and there isn't any.

I'm at the end of my work day and am putting this one (and myself)
to bedto tackle it in the morning, but if anyone out there has
encountered this before, please let me knowthis is odd beyond
anything I've ever encountered before.

Thanks and all the best

Cross-references within a web browser...PDF to PDF

2009-01-30 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good morning all.

I have had limited success with this and previously posted up inquiries but
received no replies. Still looking for some guidance or assistance.

I'm using Standard Framemaker, version 7.2 and Acrobat 8.1.3 Professional

I use Microsoft Front Page for editing the HTML side of things with a frame
going down the left and side of the screen which launches a PDF of a manual,
broken down by chapter. I have discovered that, yup, the HTML side will
allow a user navigate to the PDF, but when using cross-references in PDFs
from within a document to within another document, the "navigation" doesn't
work.

Examples:
1. If a user is in Chapter 1...and there is a direct link to Chapter 5
(chapter to chapter), the navigation works and it works well.
2. If a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to Chapter 5,
the navigation works and it works well.
3. Now, if a user is at Paragraph 1.14.3 and attempts to go to
Paragraph 5.3.7, the cross-reference between chapters will take the user to
Chapter 5.at its beginning and not the intended "target" of Paragraph 5.3.7.

Am I making any sense?

So I'm still in a quandary over this. The above problem manifests itself in
ANY web browser and I've attempted to use 4 of them to see if one version
works better or as well as another.no luck.

This is just prototyping but it has been sitting on the back burner for a
while..still looking for some guidance or assistance.

All the best

Eduardo

Making PDFs Find other PDFs Within a Web Environment

2008-09-26 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good evening fellow Framers and Acrobats:

The setup:
FrameMaker 7.2
Acrobat 8
Timesavers

But I don't believe the above has anything to do with the problems I'm
experiencing

Some very strange behavior displayed by PDFs.

Scenario:

.in a Web Browser:

Chapter 2 (SOM02.pdf) is opened by hypertext link within a web browser.
The PDF containing Chapter 2 opens correctly and is displayed with full vim
and vigor.
In FrameMaker, a cross-reference was created to Chapter 7 (SOM07),
specifically to Section 7.2, on page 3
Yet, when the link for Section 7.2 is clicked, the corresponding Chapter 7
PDF opens but instead of going to Section 7.2, it launches to the first
page of Chapter 7.

.now in an Acrobat Environment

The same Chapter 2 is opened and displayed.
When the link for Section 7.2 is clicked, it navigates correctly to Section
7.2 contained on page 3!

I've searched and searched and searched but cannot find anything relating to
this type of behavior.

Has anyone else experienced this and can you tell me your workaround???

Thank you.

FrameMaker Spell Checking

2008-02-20 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good afternoon fellow Framers

A colleague of mine posed a question on FrameMaker spell-checking:

Anything out there that can supplement the current Frame environment for
spell-checking?
Or better yet, can we expect an improvement in this area as Frame isn't
very robust.

Just checking in and wondering

Variable on Master Pages.....getting them to talk

2008-01-30 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good evening all

Here's what I'm trying to accomplish:

Standard Frame 7.2WXP is the environment

Master page...trying to create a variable which will amplify the page
number sequencing

Here's what the numbering looks like now:

2H-2 (this is actually page 1 because it follows another document, so
the numbering follows the preceding document)

Here's what I want the page numbering to look like but don't know how:

2H-2A (there are reasons for wanting thistoo many and it involves
trying to steer away from disconnected pages)

Followed by

2H-2B
2H-2C

.and so on

Is there a way to add such a variable to the master page? I know there
must be.

Thinking caps onphasers on stun.warp speed Mr. Sulu!

Thanks to all

Eduardo

Frame-to-PDF-to-Frame

2006-10-06 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good morning from the USA.

I was discussing with an associate the merits of converting a PDF to
FrameMaker. The object, of course, being that it would take time for this
type of conversion since there is no known methodology of "round-tripping" a
FrameMaker-to-PDF-to-FrameMaker document.

My associate then informed me that someone told him it was entirely possible
to do this. He did not get a name to go along with this revelation. After
much discussion and some research, I still cannot find the answer.

So I ask my fellow Acrobats, Frame Templars, and those who I believe are in
the know about FrameMaker the same question:

"Is it possible to round-trip a document from
FrameMaker-to-PDF-to-FrameMaker?" and...
"if it is possible, is it easy (click here, there, and everywhere)"

or

Does the same methodology of converting from PDF to FrameMaker applytake
time, money, and efforting.

Puzzled in Western Pennsylvania

Spot Color Printing Problem

2006-10-03 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good morning from beautiful Beaver County, Western PA

First the setup:

Frame 7.0p578, Acrobat 5.05, WXP Standard

Next the document:

Have a small document with some red text and color graphics.

Now the problem:

Printing to a postscript file, I turn the "Spot Color as Black/White"
Document prints to a postscript file
I render said postscript through Distiller
Produces a PDF successfully, only the color is still in color, not in
Black/White

Any ever encounter this? In 10 years of using FrameMaker, this is a first
for yours truly.

Thanks and all the best

Eduardo

Professing ignorance about Acrobat 7

2006-09-03 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Fellow Frame Templars, here's the setup first:

WXP, Frame 7.0xxx, Acro 7.0 (yup, I finally broke down and got it)

Wise old proverbbe careful what you wish for.

I performed the deinstall of Acrobat 5 and accomplished the install of
Acrobat 7it was long, painful, and rather lengthy, but it did complete.

Along the way, I noticed two things and this is what I'm ignorant of:

First, my printer (what I used to call Acrobat Distiller) is gone. In it's
place is something called "Adobe PDF"

Secondly, I have lost my ability to print to a postcript file.I used to
have an icon named "File" as a printerokay, it's a virtual printer, but
it's the port I would tell the old Acrobat Distiller to print to, enabling
me to print to a postscript file, or .ps file.

Now I can't do either as when I try to print to a .ps file, I get a message
that says "Cannot write to specified print file"

Fellow Frame Templars! I ask you for an assist if you too have encountered
this demon in your trials and travails..

Sword and shield in hand.

Leader Dots Not Appearing on TOC

2006-08-08 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good morning fellow Acrobats and Framers
First, the setup: Frame 7.0p579, Acrobat 5.0.5

Okay, I generated a TOC. The process went flawlessly. The leader dots from
the heading*X*TOC to the page number appear. That's not the problem.

The problem occurs twofold:

a. When printing to a physical printer, the first row of leader dots
appears, but the second and subsequent rows do not appear.

b. Well, then I decided to print to a .ps file, then render to a .PDF,
thinking I can beat this problem via the PDF side of the house.same
result. The document is picture-perfect except for the leader dots.they
don't appear in the document for other than the first row.

Any hints, tips, or tricks would be most appreciated.

Regards and thanks

Eduardo

Font Problem

2006-07-29 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good evening from Pennsylvania

Fellow Framers:

First, the setup: WXP, Frame 7.0, Acrobat 6.

Now the problem:
I have a recurring problem with one document and its fonts. Each time I
open the document, I get a message that FrameMaker does not recognize the
font Symbol Bold and will use Times instead.

Action to date:
I generated a list of references>>>fonts to locate the source of the problem
and I got a *Symbol* font that is bolded but no Symbol Bold font.

What I know to do:
I know how to turn off this message using the File>>>General>>>Preferences,
however, that doesn't really solve the problem, does it? I mean the Symbol
font is still in use and it is bolded, but there's no Symbol Bold font
within the document.

Complication:
This problem is replicated in a series of like documents throughout the
FrameMaker book. It's embarassing when trying to open a document and this
message pops up every now and then. In addition, when attempting to print a
book, FrameMaker stops when it incurs this error.

Any thoughts out there?

Thanks

Eduardo

Organization Charts

2006-06-02 Thread Eduardo F. Cidade, Sr.
Good evening from the USA

As we fast approach yet another World Cup (my pick is the USA, naturally), I
wanted to do a personal project involving Organization Charts in FrameMaker
to outline the teams leading up to who will be the eventual winner (okay,
it's a test to see if I can pull this off).

Amazingly, I can't seem to find a software tool native to FrameMaker that
creats these types of charts. Looked in quite a few spots but it's getting
late (near midnight) and I'm a bit tired.

Can anyone point me in a good direction. I have MS Org Chart on my system
but would rather stay within the Adobe line (consistency).

Thanks and regards to all.

Go USA!

Eduardo
