Table Footnotes

2009-05-06 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi Carla,
AFAIK, table footnotes have always behaved that way. We also have tables
in our manuals that span several pages and all of the footnotes are at
the bottom of the table. My big pet peeve is when the table is long
enough that the footnotes flip to the top of the next page, without
taking the last row of the table with them. That just looks dumb.

I haven't used table footnotes in ages, but I have a need for them in a
current document.

Am I losing my mind, or have they always appeared only at the *end* of
the table, even when it spans pages? Pretty darn inconvenient if you've
got a footnote on the first page of the table and have to go 2 pages
later to find out what it means...

I can't seem to find a setting to change this.

What about graphics on your master pages, such as logos and the likes?

Hi Murray,
FrameMaker is adding the funky alphanumeric extension to your Frame file
because it has changed substantially from the original. I suspect some
of your graphics are not being saved. I have seen that error a lot
lately, especially since our IT dept installed XP SP3 on our machines.
Do you use OLE for any of your graphics in your manuals? If so you may
be dismayed to find they have likely all been blown away. Check the new
files for gray boxes where graphics should be. I found that the first
time I opened a document with OLE images, the images appeared fine when
I first opened the file but if I tried to save the file, I got the
graphics have not been saved error message and the alphanumeric
extension on the file. The only solution to the problem was to eliminate
all OLE graphics and replace them with images imported by reference.
This bug was introduced with XP SP3 and there are no fixes that I know
of (and certainly none planned for Frame 6).
Best of luck.

I am having a problem using mif2go to save FM files as rtf, but I am
suspicious that the problem is with FM.

Recently I have noticed that when I save a FM file some times I get an
error message, something like graphics have not been saved; the saved
file's name is filename.fm.threelettersorcharacters, e,g,
filename.fm.1A2. I have to delete the 1A2 manually.

I just saved 03 DB Management.fm as 03DBManagement.fm because the mif2go
Help says spaces are bad in a file name to be converted, but what
resulted was 03DBManagement.fm.701.

(Never have I had a problem saving a FM file with spaces in its name as
RTF using mif2togo, eg, 03 DB Management.fm, but I was following the
mif2go Help
instructions.)

Why am I getting these three-letter-and-number-combination suffixes when
I save a FM file?

RE: FM8 crashes

2008-09-16 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
I had to add my two-cents.
We had three systems running FM8 on XP SP2. Two had 1 GB of RAM, one had
2 GB.
We had all the updates to Frame 8. We found FM8 would crash several
times a day, and always whenever we used an MS Office app. The most
frequent culprit was trying to open a mail attachment.
Recently, one of us got a new system with a Core2Duo processor and 2 GB
or RAM. No more crashes.
We're currently lobbying for the other two systems to be upgraded.

Has anyone else had problems running FM8 concurrently with MS Office or

RE: The Mystery Wrap

2008-06-20 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi Frank,
I suspect Distiller is changing your Helvetica to Times New Roman when
you PDF because you do not actually have the Helvetica font on your
system. It is likely residing on your physical printer and Windows is
making available in your Frame font menu. When you print to Adobe PDF,
or save as PDF, it cannot embed a font that is not on your system. Since
the default font for missing fonts is Times New Roman, that is what you
see in the finished PDF.
You need to make Adobe PDF your default printer in FrameMaker. Even if
you had Helvetica installed on your system, the wrapping issue might
persist. This is due to the difference in font metrics between Distiller
and the physical printer. Each interpret font widths and letter spacing
differently, causing lines to wrap unexpectedly.

FM Crash chapter 4 page 5

2008-06-04 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Bodvar,
Have you tried removing the EPS on page 6 of chapter 4 and seeing if it
distills successfully?
I have had issues such as you describe, right down to missing text, and
it has always come down to a problematic EPS image.

Thanks Art,

I have a script that runs at shutdown that deletes the FNTCACHE.DAT
file, so no problem there.
About unnecessary apps, there is always a lot of processes that are
running, but, yes, I have after reboot deleted all unnecessary
applications before printing again to ps. And only Friday I processed a

If you're stuck having to do it with the existing tools, the only way I
have found of doing it consistently is to remove all graphics from the
Frame docs and export to RTF. You then open the RTF docs in Word, clean
up the formatting and re-import all your graphics.
Yes, it's a PITA.

I have a weird problem with images (.jpg) imported by reference or
copied into FM: the image colors are very strange. For example, a white
(blank) background displays as either magenta or black (or green).
Flesh-colored hues display as royal blue. Black displays as white. Green
displays as orange. I could go on, but you get the idea.

In addition, when the document is printed to the Acrobat Distiller, the
result PDF document shows the weird colors, not the original colors as
verified in PaintShop Pro AND in Photoshop.

I have looked at the Color Views dialog, but don't know what to change,
if anything. Selecting Black and White views does not help, nor does
print color as grayscale. In the File Import dialog, I am using the
default As Color.

I have never seen this kind of problem before. Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

RE: OS X 10.4.11 -- can't import files from Word

2008-04-18 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
At the risk of starting the whining again, the eval version of Frame 8
won't run in Mac OS X.
I suspect Louise's only option is to try saving as RTF and opening the
file in Frame. The fact that it is French as opposed to English should
make no difference since French uses the standard font set.
Bonne chance.

Ignoring the question of language compatibility...

The easiest way to open a Word file in Frame is not to... Instead, save
Word as an RTF and open that. (Note that I'm saying Open -- not Import.
Import implies that the file is imported as an object within Frame,
which isn't what you should be trying to do.)

However, FM 6 is kind of an antique version, so the import filters
aren't as robust as the either 7.x or the current 8.0's --- they've been
updated and changed several times. You may also have problems with
native Word import because the Word files could have originated in a
version that was still in the future when FM 6 was shipping.

If the RTF doesn't give you better results, I'd try downloading the FM
8 eval version and see if that works better...

So far we have been doing it manually.
Am I missing something?
Is there a way to globally change cross-reference styles without
purposely corrupted the template by redefining the existing Styles.

If any Adobe people are listening: The options in the Find dropdown list

hear if anyone does something different/there are problems with my
method/easier ways to determine whether or not to go with a recovery
version of a .fm file.

Hello Framers

I am building a Book and got the Book Error Report saying Couldn't open
file because a more recent autosaved or recovered version exists.

There is a recovered version in the folder.

What is the safe thing to do??

Hi all,

(FM 7.2 on Windows)

I am trying to import an Adobe Illustrator .eps file into FrameMaker 7.2

I know this has been mentioned before but I couldn't dig through the

Hi, Framers.

After spending the morning Googling this topic with not much to show for
my efforts, I realized I should have checked with the brethren to start
with. I don't know all the details yet (the project is just beginning)
but I'm hearing that they'll want HTML Help displayed in Spanish and
Russian, and maybe Chinese. Will FrameMaker 7.0 and WebWorks 9.2 handle
all the different characters and number, currency, and date formats
associated with these languages? And can these languages be displayed
okay in HTML Help?

radical revamping of techpubs

2007-10-10 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
In my opinion, the developer is the most ill-suited person to be writing
the documentation. Their knowledge of the product is frequently too deep
for the average user and the end result is often woefully inadequate for
said average user. The fact that the developers are not native-English
speakers merely adds insult to injury.
Was this some pencil-pusher's idea of a cost cutting measure? Did he
factor in the cost of all the additional phone support that will now be
required? Or is your firm one of those that charges from the first
minute for any support?

Hi,
I would like to see what the group thinks of this scenario for writing
documentation within a company?

1. Remove all existing tech writing staff from techpubs.
2. Replace these with software developers and specialists who know the
software inside out and get them to write all of the documentation.
These would now be known as Developer-techwriters. (It should be noted
that none of these people has English as a first language, despite this
being the primary market for the documentation.) 3. Hire editing staff
to edit only the language and grammar of the documents written by the
software specialists.

The reasoning behind this scenario is; that this saves money as the
developers know the software, and it is really cheap to get university
students to come in and edit.

I won't make comments on this just now as i'm sure there are many of us
who just want to run screaming!

thanks

RE: Why am I losing page and column breaks?

2007-10-04 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Just a shot in the dark here, but were your page and column breaks
applied via manual overrides (using SpecialPage Break), and did you
recently re-import your document formats? If so, you blew them away by
re-importing the template.
Manual overrides are rarely the way to go if you want any kind of
formatting consistency. You need to create paragraph tags with the
column break and page break built-in.

FM v. RoboHelp

2007-06-20 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
In all of this, one thought occurred to me and it regards the upcoming
release of Frame 8 later this year.
Since RoboHelp is now an Adobe product, what are the odds Adobe will
drop WebWorks and adopt RH as the chosen output method for CHM with
FrameMaker? It would seem an ideal solution, with Flare nipping at their
heels.
Did I just add more fuel to the fire?

You could really stir the pot by throwing ePublisher in the mix as a
single-sourcing solution. There's an import utility available for
ePublisher that can take any RH project and convert it to MIF, retaining
links and mapping formats as you determine in the interface. Depending
on the size of the RH project and whether there are multiple RH projects
to merge into a single-source ePub project with multiple
versions/translations/localization as output, it could take hours or a
few weeks to complete... BUT it would be a one-time hit. Then set it up
with AutoMap to create the PDFs in sequence whenever you'd like (even
while you're asleep). Just food for thought...conceding, of course, that
Mif2Go is more cost-effective.

Lin Surasky wrote: Very true. However, I
didn't mention that there are 4 writers on the team who ARE using RH to

countries, with an international audience, so it's divided as to what
our customers want. Which is why I think FM is perfect: We can delliver
BOTH PDF and CHM easily.

I guess I just need to keep repeating that...

Actually, according to an historical film I saw as a child, there were
actually three tablets, but one fell off the mountain and was never
replaced

Now THAT's an editing job!

Hi Natalie,
You could always hide the graphics when you don't need to view them.
The keyboard shortcut is Esc+v+v (make sure to type lowercase v).
The same through menus is View Options... and uncheck Graphics in
the dialog box.

RE: CorelDraw Embedded Graphics

I would hasten to add EPS (with TIFF preview) to that list. You never
want to downgrade a vector graphic by rasterizing it. I have also had no
problems with PDF import into Frame, although the last time I checked
there were some problems with getting clean PDFs from Corel's own export
filters. I find it best to print to Adobe PDF directly.

Well,

transparency, and they picked runarounds.

FrameMaker maps any transparent pixels to white to enable irregular
text runarounds. If FrameMaker did not map transparent areas of images

So, does FrameMaker support transparency at all or not ? Apparently,

 with the 7.2 version ?

The short answer is no, because (besides being a poor choice for
any publishing use other than www) transparency isn't supported.

If you have Photoshop or a similar program, you can isolate the
background from your subject and set it to white and still use
.jpg.

If you want true transparency, you need to pick a graphic file
format that supports it: Photoshop's own format, GIF, or another...

Hi Nancy,
The only time I've seen the links get destroyed in the way you are
describing is when I chose to create a book with one PDF file per

In situations like that, if I were to rename a file, the links to it
would be broken.
But never internal links, and never with a book saved as a single PDF,

Has anyone else had this problem?

Strange PDF Problem

2007-03-20 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)

Hi Nancy,
The only time I've seen the links get destroyed in the way you are
describing is when I chose to create a book with one PDF file per
chapter.
In situations like that, if I were to rename a file, the links to it
would be broken.
But never internal links, and never with a book saved as a single PDF,
with no external links.

I get the same results when I do either: change the name after saving,
or putting in a name different than the book name while I'm saving as
pdf.

I frequently get Word files with embedded graphics from our engineers. The
best way I have found to get the content in Frame has been to save the Word
file as both HTML and TXT. I then extract the graphics from the HTML
graphics folder, import the TXT, and reformat according to our template.
I never try to replicate the format of the Word doc. Since our engineers
rarely use styles, all I ever end up with in the RTF is a bunch of
overrides.

This happens with anything except very small files (one or two pages). Yes,

Does Adobe have any recommendations for prepping the word file before trying

You could/should be a bit more specific about what you mean by Adobe fixing
up the RTF to FM filter. If you are finding bugs, by all means officially
report them!

You should be aware that many of the RTF to anything else
conversion issues do relate to inconsistencies between how Microsoft itself
produces and/or interprets RTF in various versions and releases of Word.
Even within a particular version of Word, you can see discrepancies. Many of
these have to do with character encodings, especially anything other than
base ASCII characters! This is especially true if you are copying text from
old Word documents from times prior to that in which Unicode was supported.

 Hi all,

Speaking of converters, I was wondering if Adobe might ever consider
fixing up the RTF to FM and FM to RTF filters that come with Frame.
Especially the RTF to FM filter. It would be SO helpful to companies
like mine who are about to convert their docsets, including many large
manuals (up to 800 pages, believe it or not) from Word to FM. It
would have made the job of convincing management a lot easier to
switch to Frame if we didn't have to pay an outside vendor to do this
 for us.

Seems like it would be a profitable thing to do, considering that more
companies would be likely to by Frame if they had an easy way to get
 there from Word.

RE: Any way of applying a custom master page to final even page i n component file

2006-11-22 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
One caveat concerning the procedure below. If you happen to have a
multi-page table the default LH master will get applied. It appears the
Apply Master Page function does not recognize paragraph tags present in
tables.
Anyone find out differently? It would solve a problem I've been having.

Uh oh, we're getting perilously close to an intentionally left blank

Hedley, someone once suggested a bass-ackwards way to do it with master page
mapping. Specify a custom left master page invoked by the presence of any
pgf format. Set up the default Left page the way you want the final left
page to look. If there is no pgf on the page to trigger the custom master
page, FM will use the default.

I haven't used master page mapping at all, so I can't vouch for the process,
but it sounds like it should work. Whether it's more or less fussy than
using MasterPage Tools or a FrameScript, I can't say. They all sound too
fussy for my tastes, so my empty left pages use the same master page as the
non-empty ones. :-)

Hi Michael,

WGL Assistant works great but it also creates font instances labelled as
FONTNAME CYR, FONTNAME Greek, etc. Windows XP created the ones for Arial and
Times New Roman to help non-Unicode compliant apps, like Framemaker, display
and print documents using the non-Latin based glyphs in the font sets.

Unicode fonts like arial, times new roman and courier do not display
any other map than Latin. Meaning Arial is one font on a system. In
FrameMaker it appears as Arial CYR, Arial Baltic, Arial Greek, Arial
TUR, etc. Same for the rest of the mentioned fonts. In theory when one
changes it to the needed version the font picks up the needed map and
displays say Greek or Baltic characters. When I was on Win2000 this
was not an issue - in XP I can't get a stable result. I have about 16
different machines and half of them have this problem - others don't.
All have installations of the same XP system and SP2. Problem seems to
stem from Windows itself as I tried practically everything to fix it
and be able to use unicode fonts without creating a whole bunch of
fonts to replace them. But where it Windows it is I don't know.
 Any thoughts?

P.S. I'm fighting this one for over a year and couldn't come up with
anything sensible. Help me out of this misery please

RE: Translation questions

2006-10-05 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)

Hi Alexandra,
Considering the amount of time you've just spent tagging your Frame files
with the changed text, not to mention the amount of correcting you did to
the Spanish files once they were returned by your translator, do you still
think the lowest bidder saved your company any money?
Before my company wised up, we used to send our translators a Frame file
containing only the changes made in our manuals. This was time consuming in
two ways: creating the file and reintegrating the translated text into the
translated manuals. With 18 supported languages it was a full time job for
me.
The idea of having a translation database, or translation memory, is to
identify text that already exists in translated form and separating it from
text requiring localization. In a proper work flow you should never have to
go through what you just did. Did you communicate the corrections to your
translators after the first round of localization? No translator is perfect,
that's why we have our translations proofread by our technicians at our
regional offices. Any corrections they suggest go back to the translators,
and eventually get added to the translation database. There should never be
an issue of an out-of-date translation database unless you flip between two
different translators with different databases. Any changes made to your
manuals have to go back to the translator.
We finally sourced a translation company that makes very efficient use of
translation memory. We send them the complete manuals in native Frame
format, along with all the graphics for the manual. We get back translated
Frame and PDF files ready to print and send along to our customers.
As an aside, if you've made extensive use of generated files (TOC, Index),
autonumbering, cross-references, conditional text, etc. in Frame, I wouldn't
even contemplate migrating all of that to Word. You'll want to slit your
wrists trying to get that piece of ordure to do what Frame does. Just my
two-cents.
Best of luck.

Hello,

FM 6.0 unstructured
ePro WWH 5.0

We recently translated our documentation set (two manuals, about 1,600
pages) into Spanish. This wasn't a very smooth process, but it was
accomplished by sending our .mif files to the translator, who uses TRADOS.
The translator was selected based on the lowest bid.
The translator did create the database files that are used for facilitating
future translation; however, once we got the files back from them, there
were so many errors and changes required that we question the usefulness of
the database files. Our Spanish FrameMaker files are now significantly
different from the files that they gave to us.

Now we are moving on to the next version of our software, and facing
difficulties understanding how to mark what has changed since the last
version, and translate only the new/changed text. What we ended up doing is
comparing our English files in FrameMaker, and, using the CMP files, added
the new/changed text into the Spanish files, marked with a Translation
condition. This was a huge chore. I just KNOW that others do not do it this
way. The managers are not happy with the amount of time this took, and we
aren't happy because it was very tedious.

I have read the white paper about translation that is often mentioned, but
the process is still not clear to me. I don't really know what TRADOS can do
and how the translators use it with .mif files. (The PTBs claim that TRADOS
works *much better* with Word, and why do use FrameMaker anyway?) I also
know that many of you have switched to structured FrameMaker to solve some
translation issues (like these?) but at the moment, switching to structured
with our small, very busy dept.
is cost- and time-prohibitive.

If you are still using unstructured FrameMaker and translating your text
through several versions, I would like to know:

* What your companies do to mark text that has changed? How do you move the
translation up to the next version?
* Can't translators take the latest mif files from you and use TRADOS to
identify what has changed?
* What if the database from the translator is out-of-date? Can't they build
a new one based on new files?
* Is there really a difference in this process (re:TRADOS) if we used Word?

I think we're making this way harder than it needs to be and would
appreciate your input.

Pagination is probably being controlled by the book file... so you checked
the settings for both the Index and the file that follow it?

If you're using Delete Pages to remove the two pages, when are they
reappearing? When you regenerate the Index, Update the book, or some other
time?

If you add a new Index to the book and update, does it also have extra
pages?

Importing images from a CAD system

2006-09-07 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
I am in the process of educating the engineers I work with over this issue.
They are in the habit of giving me a JPEG image when I request a line
drawing. JPEG was never intended for anything other than continuous tone
images. When a line drawing gets exported to a JPEG, the line quality
suffers horribly.
I ask them to export to CGM, which I import into Adobe Illustrator and
convert to either EPS or leave as a native AI file. The resulting file can
then be imported into Frame just fine and I don't lose on the line quality
or scalability.

Bill,

The hardware tech writers at my company use Solidworks creations in their
Frame docs. They told me that they don't use the DXF file because they are
so large. Our engineers create them for 11 x 17 paper. They always convert
the DXF file to a high-res JPEG and then import to Frame and scale it down.
So yes, they lose the vector.

Thanks,

I have a project where I may need to import wireframe images (basically,
perspective line drawings) from a Solidworks CAD system into a Frame 7.0
document. Assuming that vector format will produce the best resolution, has
anyone had any problems importing DXF images directly into Frame? Or is it
better to convert to another format first?

Thanks,

More info on this issue.

After much frustration, I tried a few things and have learned that this
issue only happens when I am accessing the files from our network server. I
tested this by creating a new test book on the server and adding a few
chapters to it. Same problem. I then copied the test book directory to my
local hard drive and had no problem. I was immediately able to save each
chapter.

At this point, bottom line is I cannot save any files when i am accessing
them from the network server. I continuously get the below error message.

Also I tried using both FM 6.0 and 7.2. I have the same problem with both,
so it's not an FM version issue.

I have not worked on these files in about 6 months, but the path to them has
not changed as they have many text insets.

I cannot imagine what would have changed on our network to cause this.
Anyone have any idea?

My concern is moving the files because of the high number of text insets
with x-ref's!

FM is creating suffixes like: .2A8, 3D7 etc.

Anyone know what's going on? This is a pain in butt!

Hi, Klaus:

Do you see any messages when you try to open the file?

FrameMaker 7.x can read FrameMaker files as far back as 4.x, I believe.
Your file may be corrupted. One technique that might help is called
OpenHeroic. This bypasses FrameMaker's validation checks that are usually
performed when opening a file. You perform it with these keystrokes:

* Tap and release Escape
* Tap and release lowercase o
* Tap and release uppercase H
* Locate the file in the openFile dialog box.

How to get really old FM versions (set of diskettes)?

With a virtual environment or an old Windows 3.1 machine some
bootstrapping
process should be possible.

Do you know of other means to read an old FM file?

Well there still is the problem of reading it physically (a diskette
format
no more in use, MO disks etc.). I guess that things must be
reconstructed
from printed matter (scan, ocr, ...)

BTW does anyone know the details of the header information? What does
the
letter J in MakerFile 6.0J denote? FM 7.2 puts MakerFile 7.0H into
the
file.

Thanks for your ideas

Hi Scott,
You need to edit the ruling styles from the Custom Ruling and Shading menu

Choose the rule you wish to modify and click the Edit Ruling Style button.
You can edit all the line parameters, including color, from there. You can

Hi,

http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3332

Adobe FrameMaker 7.2p158 update for Windows - English, French, German, and
Japanese

This download updates the English, French, German, and Japanese language
versions of Adobe® FrameMaker® 7.2b144 software (released in December
2005) to version 7.2p158.

The FrameMaker 7.2p158 patch for Windows® includes the following
corrections:

* Code point correction providing added support for missing characters on
Cyrillic, Central European, and Baltic code pages for Windows.

* Fixed capability to drag and drop files from Windows Explorer onto the
FrameMaker Book window.

* Various fixes related to Undo, WMF/EMF filter, PDF conversion, DITA, and
XML schema.

* Added limited support for URL paths (e.g., http://...) in import and
export XML workflows for schema. The schema URL will need to map to a local
path (on disk) using the entity catalog file. The syntax for mapping is the
following: SYSTEM http://url...; local path of schema.
Whenever you have an HTTP path for the schema file, FrameMaker will refer to
the local mapped file on the disk and will use this schema file for
processing. This support is not extended to schema in include, import, and
redefine elements. The URL path mapping support should not be used in
import XML fragment workflows.

I was demonstrating how to get help, and showed how she could type in a

So, to demonstrate how to properly shut down the computer, I entered the

Click Start, click Shut Down, and then in the drop-down list click Shut

The only part of that instruction which is correct is Click Start.

o There is no Shut Down option under Start. It's called Turn Off Computer.

o There is no drop-down list under the Turn Off Computer dialog.
Instead, there are 3 buttons.

o There is no button option under Turn Off Computer called Shut Down
Instead there are three button
options: Stand By, Turn Off, and Restart.

Unbelievable On-Line Help Stupidity

2006-03-10 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Personally, I find the whole idea of clicking "Start" to shutdown somewhat
counter-intuitive, and could somebody tell me why I have to use the
"three-finger salute" to get my login screen in XP Pro? Once I power up,
what else could I possibly want to do with my computer? It should
automatically default to the login screen.
Just my two-cents' (Canadian) worth.

I was helping a friend who'd just acquired her first computer, an E-Machine
with Windows XP.

I was demonstrating how to get help, and showed how she could type in a
search phrase and get a list of all the help topics containing that phrase.
So, to demonstrate how to properly shut down the computer, I entered the
search phrase "Turn Off." Sure enough, all the help topics containing that
phrase appeared, and I selected the"Turn Off The Computer" topic. Here are
the instructions which appeared under that
topic:

"Click Start, click Shut Down, and then in the drop-down list click Shut
Down"

The only part of that instruction which is correct is "Click Start."

o There is no Shut Down option under Start. It's called "Turn Off Computer."

Kerning of space in FrameMaker

2006-01-11 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi Greg,
This is just a stab in the dark but is FrameMaker capable of recognizing the
modified kerning? FrameMaker is Unicode blind and as such cannot see
anything beyond the standard ANSI 256 characters.
After the registry song and dance I had to do to get it to recognize
Cyrillic and Baltic glyphs in my Myriad Pro fonts, I'm not so sure it's
capable of reading the kerning changes, so it defaults to the standard for
that font.
InDesign and Word, on the other hand, are Unicode savvy, so I'm not
surprised they sees the changes. Is this an OpenType font by any chance?

Fred,

Thanks, but I am not talking about the on-screen appearance. I did not know
about this ini file setting, however, what I am referring to is the actual
PDF and hardcopy appearance.

And it only concerns the space character. Like I add 30 units of kerning
between the f and the space (inside the font with FontLab) and this added
kerning does not show up even if I turn on the kerning pairs in FrameMaker.

However, this kerning does show up in InDesign or Microsoft Word.

Best, Greg

Are you talking about on-sreeen appearance? In hard copy? In PDF?
If the kerning is OK in print and/or PDF, you need to look at the
DisplayUsingPrinterMetrics item in your maker.ini file to see whether it's
equated to Off or On.

Phantom Images-Frame 7.2

2006-01-10 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
I have seen that happen occasionally as well. I discovered that switching to
the reference pages and back to the body pages clears it up.
Don't ask me why...

After deleting, for example, a text box and callout arrow, from an anchored
frame, a phantom image of the object is sometimes left behind.
It is as visually clear as the deleted object. I know the actual object is
gone, but the phantom image remains. I've tried "refresh"
(control-L) and saving the document, but can't clear the image(s) until I
close and then reopen the document. Is there an easier way to clear the
phantom image?

I can not open a nine-chapter book.

I respond to the unavailable fonts warning by clicking the OK button.

I respond to the Looking for [missing screen shot] by updating the Document
to Use New Path.

When I click Continue, I see an INTERNAL ERROR message.

Similarly, when I choose Skip This File, and when I choose Ignore All
Missing Files, I also see the same INTERNAL ERROR message.

I am using FrameMaker SGML Version 6.0p357, XP Pro 2002 SP 2.

The problem is unique to this book
