Re: Keyboard shortcut for closing pods
The problem with the suggestion of using two or three Escapes in a row is that it could well break all the OTHER keyboard shortcuts that use the Esc key. Also, if you are mis-entering a keyboard shortcut, pressing Esc a couple of times resets the sequence so you can start over again. I think Esc Pc is unused, though, at least as of FM 11. This is for all the pods, Cross-Reference, Find/Change, etc. The other option would be just to make pressing the Escape key twice close the pod, which to me would be second best, but far better than the current situation which requires clicking on a small icon to minimize or close a pod.* -- Shmuel Wolfson Technical Writer 052-763-7133 ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as ljsims...@gmail.com. Acrobat X: Possible to transfer comments between PDFs?
Hi all, We use Acrobat's shared reviews as part of our documentation process. Sometimes not all the comments get addressed before a document gets released, which means that I need that information for the next review session. Is there ANY way to transfer comments from a closed Shared Review PDF to the next/newer Shared Review PDF? I do NOT want to have to retype 190 comments! Re: Acrobat X: Possible to transfer comments between PDFs?
Thank you all. We're still using FM10 and Acrobat Pro X. Both Art's and Craig's information was useful--I can import the comments from the old PDF into the new one, and it's a lot easier than I expected. As Monica notes, however, they're not necessarily in the right spots on the page, as things have changed between versions. Still, they're at least usually on the same page, so that's a good start. Maybe it'll be good enough. I'm going to experiment with trying to move some, although I suspect if it's not my comment the program won't let me. We'll see. Lin On Fri, Apr 25, 2014 at 11:28 AM, Craig Ede craig...@hotmail.com wrote: Look into how FM 12 handles importing PDF comments. I haven't used this yet, but my understanding is you can import the PDF comments into FM as conditional text. (The PDF must be a tagged PDF.) You could then change the condition on the item you want to save and then mass delete the rest via deleting the original condition and choosing Delete the text rather than Make the Text Unconditional. The devil is in the details, and the FM 11 version was flawed, but if you have FM 12 this might work for you. Re: Having problems with importing an EPS file into FrameMaker ...
As I recall, Frame doesn't display EPS natively. Instead, it uses a TIF image which, as you noticed, is pretty horrible. When you print to PDF, however, it'll look just fine. Unless there's some overriding reason you need it to be lovely in Frame, I wouldn't worry about it. If there is, try converting to SVG, which Frame handles just fine and is also a vector format. On Thu, Mar 6, 2014 at 3:36 PM, Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net) syed.hos...@aeris.net wrote: Hi, all. I am trying to import a graphic - with only four colors in it - (it is in EPS format) and am having some bizarre difficulties. When I view the EPS file on my Windows system using PS_view, it looks perfectly fine - even when zoomed in. However, for some reason, the file comes into FrameMaker in a tiny 103 x 50 resolution (I didn't see any option to rasterize it at a larger resolution or dpi?) and the result when zoomed up a bit, is *horrible*. The rasterized resampling of the few colors in the graphic results in an unusably bad quality image. If I externally rasterize the EPS into TIF using Photoshop set to NO anti-alias and with a resolution of 1800 dpi (I know this is a bit overkill, but I am trying to minimize jaggies along the curves of the graphic), it works! But the resulting TIF file is over 25 Megabytes and I would like to avoid that - should I try LZW compression when saving perhaps? Also, I am using an older version of Photoshop (CS3) for this work, and after I rasterize into Photoshop at 1800, I cannot seem to find the option to save the file in PNG format. So, am using TIF. Is there something about/in the EPS file to begin with, such that FrameMaker seems to want to rasterize it into a 103 x 50 image? Is there a way to change that option? Hey, Max, do the Esc shortcuts still work? Sometime around FM9, some of them (some of the table cursor movement ones) stopped working. FrameMaker 12 released
Thanks for the links, Winfried. Does anyone know if FM12 (and also FM11) come in 32-bit AND 64-bit versions, or are they both strictly 32 bits? I've only been able to find that FM9 was 32-bit only. Re: Updating TOC Wipes Formatting
Hi Karen, You need to set up how you want your TOC to look on its reference page. If you already have a TOC set up correctly, use File Import Formats, deselect All, then select Reference Pages and Paragraph Tags, and import. The next time you update the book, the TOC will be in the correct formatting. If you don't have one set up correctly, you'll have to do it. Click View Reference Pages Find the reference page labeled TOC. It'll probably have something there already with paragraph tag labels such as Heading1TOC. Use the paragraph designer to format your heading_styleTOC tags on this page. I would understand if new entries picked up during the update had no formatting, but I can't see why entries that match what's already there and don't change would have their formatting stripped out. Re: Special character: punctuation space
And if I'd read more closely, I'd have seen you knew how to do thin space. I believe those are the only special spaces available, though, so if thin space isn't what you want, you might try numeric. I don't recall ever seeing one that was the width of punctuation, and I doubt if there is one, since how much space a mark of punctuation takes up depends on the mark in proportional spacing. For example, a ? will take up more room than a !. If thin space isn't what you want, try the numeric. Re: Special character: punctuation space
Hi Pat, I don't think there's a keyboard shortcut that will do that, or at least none I've ever found, and I've been creating a quick reference for myself lately on all the keyboard shortcuts I want to use, so I've looked at this a bit. I think the only way to insert a Unicode character like that is to use the Character Palette. I've never been able to type those high Unicode characters in with the number keypad; as far as I can tell, it only lets you input ASCII codes, not Unicode. You'll also need a font that supports full Unicode, such as Arial Unicode MS. Why not just use the variable, if it works? Or write an ExtendScript that'll insert the character without the variable? I've never used ExtendScript, so I'm not sure how that would be done; however, there are lots of people on this list who could probably help with that. It's turned off in Windows by default. Use regedit to find the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method. Right-click on it, choose New and then String to create a new string called EnableHexNumpad with a value of 1. (Don't type the quotes.) REBOOT. Don't forget to reboot! Now, you will be able to type unicode characters by holding down the left-alt key and simultaneously pressing the plus sign on the keypad, and then (while still holding down the left-alt key) enter the unicode character. Then release the left-alt key. (Note that the right-alt key does not work for this.) So, for your example you would hold down your Left-Alt key, and then (simultaneously) on the numeric pad: press + press 2 press 0 press 0 press 8 and then release the Alt key. Some Unicode characters have the hex letters a to f in them. Simply enter them from the main keyboard (while still holding down the Left-Alt key). PLEASE NOTE that the punctuation space that you want to enter will ONLY appear if the font you are using contains it as a defined character. (Most fonts do not.) Special character: punctuation space
And if I'd read more closely, I'd have seen you knew how to do thin space. I believe those are the only "special" spaces available, though, so if thin space isn't what you want, you might try numeric. I don't recall ever seeing one that was "the width of punctuation", and I doubt if there is one, since how much space a mark of punctuation takes up depends on the mark in proportional spacing. For example, a "?" will take up more room than a "!". If thin space isn't what you want, try the numeric. Beyond that, I got nothing. :) On Mon, Jul 1, 2013 at 1:55 PM, Lin Sims wrote: > Number space: Esc++1 > Em space: Esc++m > En space: Esc++n > Thin space: Esc++t > > You probably want thin space. > > On Mon, Jul 1, 2013 at 1:25 PM, Christenson, Pat < > PChristenson at ftportfolios.com> wrote: > >> Thanks for pointing me to bookvars. >> >> ** ** >> >> Now a new question: I thought there was a way to insert a space that?s >> the width of punctuation, such as a period or comma (similar to Esc >> spacebar m for em space, Esc spacebar t for thin space, etc.). Special character: punctuation space
Shmuel, Yes, you understood correctly. That's how Shlomo showed me how to do it. I took his two FrameMaker template courses a few years ago. If you import the MIF snippet as a file, then you can import it only into a single file. Of course you can then import variables into all other files of the book. I knew you could put books inside of books, but I haven't tried importing variables into a book file that contains other book files. I wasn't sure if Frame would open the document files as well as the book files. My concern with doing that sort of thing was that Edwin said there were hundreds of files to be updated. Opening that many either all at once or one by one, as Frame does when the files aren't already open, could tie up even the most robust system for a long time. Re: Cursor key navigation in tables
The caveat here (as I just discovered) is that using those four Modify lines apparently turns cursor key navigation in the regular text OFF. I added these 4 lines to the existing custumui.cfg = table navigation via key arrows is now ON! In my poking around earlier today, I did find these commands in cmds.cfg and tried to reassign the MoveIPToCellAbove and ...CellBelow commands to more convenient shortcut keys. But whether I left them alone, changed the KeySequence definition, or added a Modify command, those two MoveIP commands refuse to do anything. ...CellAtLeft and ...CellAtRight both work, as do MoveIPUpAndSelectText and MoveIPDownAndSelectText, but not the two commands I specifically want to use. I suppose I'll just have to use the move and select commands, because at least it's better than having to reach for the mouse every damn time. What's frustrating is that I *know* these commands worked in FM5.5.6, 6.0, 7.x and 8.0. Chalk up one mlore feature that got broken and never fixed when Adobe saw fit to impose their stupid and inconvenient (and buggy...) UI on us with version 9.0. Sigh... I suppose I *should* report this bug to Adobe, but every time I have done it in the past has been an exercise in ultimate frustration. Every time it has taken me between one and two hours to accomplish something that should have taken 10-15 minutes. And ever since software development and maintenance was moved to Bangalore, the only response I have ever gotten to a reported bug was that we fixed the software to make it work the way it was supposed to work. Never mind that the new behavior was illogical and inconsistent with how other similar features worked, the mere fact that FrameMaker now behaved differently meant that a whole flock of my carefully designed procedures and processes no longer worked. I might have chalked it up to job security, but my employer (by acquisition...) chose to shut down their operation here in New Jersey. But that's a story for another day... Searchable Text in PDF Graphics
Used to be (at least as of FM8), if you distilled a document that had an SVG in it, text in the graphic would be searchable in the PDF. This doesn't seem to be the case in FM10. Can you send your numbering properties for all the numbered tags? I'm not sure without looking at them, but I have a feeling that you're using the same counter position/building block for both the figures and some of your section numbers. If you look at this page, Adobe has a nice table about halfway down the page showing how to set the building blocks up. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WSF176D8C8-8133-4860-88E3-AF69262623F0.html On Thu, Dec 27, 2012 at 4:22 PM, ani...@comcast.net wrote: Framers, Back on Frame after several years of being forced to use inferior products. Typicla auto numbering problem, Frame10 Unstructured
Can you send your numbering properties for all the numbered tags? I'm not sure without looking at them, but I have a feeling that you're using the same counter position/building block for both the figures and some of your section numbers. If you look at this page, Adobe has a nice table about halfway down the page showing how to set the building blocks up. http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WSF176D8C8-8133-4860-88E3-AF69262623F0.html On Thu, Dec 27, 2012 at 4:22 PM, wrote: > Framers, > > Back on Frame after several years of being forced to use inferior products. > The hang of it is returning, but I have a strange auto numbering issue. It does, actually, but since we make sure that the text is black, it doesn't LOOK like it's clickable. Acrobat X Pro Crashing
Has anyone else had issues with Acrobat X Pro crashing? Mine seems to crash under two conditions, if I'm working extensively with comments or if I've been making a lot of searches. My warning sign is that things start to disappear from the GUI, usually icons but sometimes text. We're not talking about huge files here, either, maybe a few hundred pages with maybe a few hundred comments. Win 7, Service Pack 1, 64-bit Adobe Acrobat X Pro, 10.0.0 Intel i5, 2.60 GHz 6G RAM One of my coworkers says he's been having the same kind of issues, but he's often working in PDFs of a couple thousand pages with a few thousand comments. Like all writers and office workers, we usually have multiple programs open at the same time, and I'm wondering if this is the problem. Hints or advice welcome! What Syed said. I've got the Frame 8 book, and it's still incredibly useful, but the company I'm now working at is using Frame 10 and is making noises about moving all of us into structured, so I want both! ANN: List of FrameMaker Utilities and Plugins, v4.0, now available
For those interested, the list update has been completed. Jeremy Griffith is kindly hosting it on his site, and you can find it here: http://mif2go.com/framemaker-resources If you can't get to the web site, contact me off-list and I'll email you directly. Don't forget Scott Prentice's Tool Search, which will also give you information on FrameScripts. http://leximation.com/toolsearch/ There are two lists this time through; one sorted by the name of the utility/plugin and one sorted by the supplier. I've also added a table for plugins that are, as far as I can determine, no longer publicly available. Corrections, additions, deletions, etc., are welcome. -- Lin Sims

Re: cross-reference dialog history question
Frame always assumes it's xrefing within the same document. When I know I'm going to be inserting multiple xrefs to other documents, what I do is copy the first xref and paste it in the new location(s). Table Navigation shortcut keys, Frame 10
I'm having an interesting issue with using shortcut navigation keys in tables. All of them work EXCEPT for moving to the cell in the row above or below the current row. Naturally, right now those are the ones I want to use! Anyone have an idea what might cause this? It's installed on my hard drive and has all of the updates. There are no plugins (sob!).
