Re: Keyboard shortcut for closing pods

2014-05-07 Thread Lin Sims
The problem with the suggestion of using two or three Escapes in a row is
that it could well break all the OTHER keyboard shortcuts that use the Esc
key. Also, if you are mis-entering a keyboard shortcut, pressing Esc a
couple of times resets the sequence so you can start over again. I think
Esc Pc is unused, though, at least as of FM 11.

pressing the Escape key three times without pause would close the pod. This
is for all the pods, Cross-Reference, Find/Change, etc. The other option
would be just to make pressing the Escape key twice close the pod, which to
me would be second best, but far better than the current situation which
requires clicking on a small icon to minimize or close a pod.*

Acrobat X: Possible to transfer comments between PDFs?

2014-04-25 Thread Lin Sims
Hi all,

We use Acrobat's shared reviews as part of our documentation process.
Sometimes not all the comments get addressed before a document gets
released, which means that I need that information for the next review
session. Is there ANY way to transfer comments from a closed Shared Review
PDF to the next/newer Shared Review PDF? I do NOT want to have to retype
190 comments!

Regards,

Re: Acrobat X: Possible to transfer comments between PDFs?

2014-04-25 Thread Lin Sims
Thank you all.

We're still using FM10 and Acrobat Pro X. Both Art's and Craig's
information was useful--I can import the comments from the old PDF into the
new one, and it's a lot easier than I expected.

As Monica notes, however, they're not necessarily in the right spots on the
page, as things have changed between versions. Still, they're at least
usually on the same page, so that's a good start. Maybe it'll be good
enough. I'm going to experiment with trying to move some, although I
suspect if it's not my comment the program won't let me. We'll see.

Look into how FM 12 handles importing PDF comments. I haven't used this
yet, but my understanding is you can import the PDF comments into FM as
conditional text. (The PDF must be a tagged PDF.) You could then change the
condition on the item you want to save and then mass delete the rest via
deleting the original condition and choosing Delete the text rather than
 Make the Text Unconditional.

The devil is in the details, and the FM 11 version was flawed, but if you
have FM 12 this might work for you.

Re: Having problems with importing an EPS file into FrameMaker ...

2014-03-06 Thread Lin Sims
As I recall, Frame doesn't display EPS natively. Instead, it uses a TIF
image which, as you noticed, is pretty horrible. When you print to PDF,
however, it'll look just fine. Unless there's some overriding reason you
need it to be lovely in Frame, I wouldn't worry about it. If there is, try
converting to SVG, which Frame handles just fine and is also a vector
format.

 Hi, all.

I am trying to import a graphic - with only four colors in it - (it is in
EPS format) and am having some bizarre difficulties. When I view the EPS
file on my Windows system using PS_view, it looks perfectly fine - even
 when zoomed in.

However, for some reason, the file comes into FrameMaker in a tiny 103 x
50 resolution (I didn't see any option to rasterize it at a larger
resolution or dpi?) and the result when zoomed up a bit, is *horrible*.
The rasterized resampling of the few colors in the graphic results in an
 unusably bad quality image.

If I externally rasterize the EPS into TIF using Photoshop set to NO
anti-alias and with a resolution of 1800 dpi (I know this is a bit
overkill, but I am trying to minimize jaggies along the curves of the
graphic), it works! But the resulting TIF file is over 25 Megabytes and I
would like to avoid that - should I try LZW compression when saving perhaps?

Also, I am using an older version of Photoshop (CS3) for this work, and
after I rasterize into Photoshop at 1800, I cannot seem to find the option
to save the file in PNG format. So, am using TIF.

Is there something about/in the EPS file to begin with, such that
FrameMaker seems to want to rasterize it into a 103 x 50 image? Is there a
 way to change that option?

Re: Can't get to either the Paragraph Designer or Character Designer

2014-01-29 Thread Lin Sims
Hey, Max, do the Esc shortcuts still work? Sometime around FM9, some of
them (some of the table cursor movement ones) stopped working. I wish that
could be fixed, too, and expanded to add the new features and commands.
They're VERY useful for fast access to a lot of the submenus.

Those commands should work. You might also try the shortcuts Control-M for

Make sure that you did not use Edit-Preferences and change your user

I was humming along very nicely with one of those tutorials until I hit a
major snag. I was supposd to do something with the paragraph designer, and
neither the tutorial nor the FM 12 User Guide was very clear on how to get
to it. I searched on my own, and found the menu option Format - Paragraph
 - Designer, which looked like what I should select. So I selected it and
-- nothing happened. At least, nothing appeared that I could recognize as
the Paragraph Designer. The same thing happened with the character
designer. So either I'm making some kind of error or something's wrong with
my copy of FM. I hope it's my error and you can tell me how to correct it.

Thanks for the links, Winfried.

Does anyone know if FM12 (and also FM11) come in 32-bit AND 64-bit
versions, or are they both strictly 32 bits? I've only been able to find
that FM9 was 32-bit only.

Thanks,

Note that I am interested in details regarding *unstructured* Frame. I

You can lock it down. We've done something similar where I work--created a
Word template with the styles named the same way as in our Frame template,
and then locked the Word template to prevent on-the-fly formatting. The
engineers vacillate between loving it (everything's already set up! yay!)
and hating it (why can't I use Bold anymore? Wah!), but it surely makes
life easier for US.

Re: Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-10 Thread Lin Sims
If someone has a copy of Bruce Fosters ImpGraph plugin that they're willing
to give you, that may do what you need. Unfortunately, Bruce has died and
as far as I am aware, this plugin is no longer publicly available. I'm also
unsure if it will work with anything past FM8.

You can also try Felix Ritter's fmGraphicTools. I'm less sure if it can do
what you need, and I have no information on its version compatibility. You
can find them at:
http://www.mevis-research.de/~ritter/awakeideas/fmtools.html

Hope that helps,

Lin

Inserting inline graphics

2013-09-10 Thread Lin Sims
If someone has a copy of Bruce Fosters ImpGraph plugin that they're willing
to give you, that may do what you need. Unfortunately, Bruce has died and
as far as I am aware, this plugin is no longer publicly available. I'm also
unsure if it will work with anything past FM8.

You can also try Felix Ritter's fmGraphicTools. I'm less sure if it can do
what you need, and I have no information on its version compatibility. You
can find them at:
http://www.mevis-research.de/~ritter/awakeideas/fmtools.html

Hope that helps,

Lin

Re: Updating TOC Wipes Formatting

2013-08-27 Thread Lin Sims
Hi Karen,

You need to set up how you want your TOC to look on its reference page. If
you already have a TOC set up correctly, use File Import Formats,
deselect All, then select Reference Pages and Paragraph Tags, and import.
The next time you update the book, the TOC will be in the correct
formatting.

If you don't have one set up correctly, you'll have to do it.

Click View Reference Pages
Find the reference page labeled TOC. It'll probably have something there
already with paragraph tag labels such as Heading1TOC.
Use the paragraph designer to format your heading_styleTOC tags on this
page.
When you're done, click View Body Pages and then regenerate the book

HTH,

Lin

 Hi Framers,

Why does updating a book strip all formatting from existing TOC entries?
I've already imported paragraph formats to the TOC file. I haven't altered
the text of the entries or their page numbers, just applied formatting from
the paragraph designer. Clicking default font doesn't restore applied
 formats.

I would understand if new entries picked up during the update had no
formatting, but I can't see why entries that match what's already there and
don't change would have their formatting stripped out.

This makes updating the TOC take two, three, four times as long as it
 should!

 Thanks,

Hi Nancy,

If you look closely at the table, you'll see that the alpha symbol appears
in the Symbol font column. In other words, Adobe/Frame is advising that you
enter ANSI 097 (for a) and apply the Symbol font. So you understood just
fine, you just missed the last step. At the end of the week, that's

Do you mean that you want to create a list of terms in a file and have
something automatically mark those terms in your documents to be added to

And as of Frame 10, you can also search for Character Format Override and

If you do search for a specific tag, remember that the first time you find

Shouldn't those names appear in the scrollable entry field of the
Find/Change palette, the same way paragraph styles do? (Not even default

to get the properties to complete this dialog?

If I close this dialog and try again, a Specify the character format to

My documents have only an A flow. I doubt the character format I'm looking
for would be on a master page. Even if a style or two were in an unanchored
box, for example, that doesn't explain all styles not being available or
 found.

I'm sure this is a case of user error. What am I doing wrong?

Now a new question: I thought there was a way to insert a space that’s the
width of punctuation, such as a period or comma (similar to Esc spacebar m
for em space, Esc spacebar t for thin space, etc.). I found the Unicode
for it is x2008. I’ve tried (and had other people) try this, holding down
Alt and typing 2008 on the numeric keypad. We get a character that looks
like a long equal sign with a vertical line through it.

Re: Special character: punctuation space

Hi Pat,

I don't think there's a keyboard shortcut that will do that, or at least
none I've ever found, and I've been creating a quick reference for myself
lately on all the keyboard shortcuts I want to use, so I've looked at this
a bit.

I think the only way to insert a Unicode character like that is to use the
Character Palette. I've never been able to type those high Unicode
characters in with the number keypad; as far as I can tell, it only lets
you input ASCII codes, not Unicode. You'll also need a font that supports
full Unicode, such as Arial Unicode MS.

Why not just use the variable, if it works? Or write an ExtendScript
that'll insert the character without the variable? I've never used
ExtendScript, so I'm not sure how that would be done; however, there are
lots of people on this list who could probably help with that.

First, if you haven't already, you need to turn on the unicode keypad.
It's turned off in Windows by default. Use regedit to find the key
 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Input Method. Right-click on it, choose
New and then String to create a new string called EnableHexNumpad with a
value of 1. (Don't type the quotes.) REBOOT. Don't forget to reboot!

Now, you will be able to type unicode characters by holding down the
left-alt key and simultaneously pressing the plus sign on the keypad, and
then (while still holding down the left-alt key) enter the unicode
character. Then release the left-alt key. (Note that the right-alt key
 does not work for this.)

So, for your example you would hold down your Left-Alt key, and then
 (simultaneously) on the numeric pad:
 press +
 press 2
 press 0
 press 0
 press 8
and then release the Alt key. Some Unicode characters have the hex
letters a to f in them. Simply enter them from the main keyboard (while
still holding down the Left-Alt key).

PLEASE NOTE that the punctuation space that you want to enter will ONLY
appear if the font you are using contains it as a defined character. (Most
 fonts do not.)

Re: The Problem with Long Titles in Generated Lists

2013-06-03 Thread Lin Sims
Chris Despoupolis's (sp?) TocBreaker might be of use. You'd have to insert
your soft returns once and run TocBreaker to save the information. After
that, you run TocBreaker after regenerating. (http://cudspan.net/) It works
with all generated lists.

You can use Google to search the archives by specifying site:

2013-06-03 Thread Lin Sims
Chris Despoupolis's (sp?) TocBreaker might be of use. You'd have to insert
your soft returns once and run TocBreaker to save the information. After
that, you run TocBreaker after regenerating. (http://cudspan.net/) It works
with all generated lists.

You can use Google to search the archives by specifying "site:
www.framerusers.org"

My company upgraded to FM11; I did download the new FM11 versions of

I believe the .dlls must be installed in the plugins directory.
However, it looks like FM11 has more than one of these.

 On my system:
 Program Files\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11\fminit\Plugins
 Program Files\AdobeFrameMaker11\plugins

 The error message I see:
Cannot initialize API client c:\program

Check for errors in the APIClients section of
 C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Framemaker11\maker.ini,
verify that the client program exists and make sure you
has enough to swap space to run the desk.

Thanks in advance for you help.

If the MIF snippet or some other approach works, you could do all files at
once by creating a scratch book, using Windows' search to find all your
 .fm
files, and dragging and dropping the found files into the book. Then, in
FrameMaker, select all the files in the book and import the snippet.

Re: mass update of system variable

2013-04-19 Thread Lin Sims
Really? I've used a MIF snippet in the last month to update all the
variables in a book file, and that was in Frame10.

(ETudsbury, I forgot to say that you have to reopen the MIF file in
FrameMaker, but I figured you'd know that since the file you're importing
from has to be open.)

 MIF snippet.

 1. Open a blank document and edit the variables you want to update.

 2. Save as a MIF file.

 3. Open the MIF file in a TEXT editor.

 4. Delete everything but the code for the variables you want to update.

 5. Save and close the file.

 6. Open the files you want to update and import variables from the MIF
 snippet.

Let me know if you have questions. :)

 Modify MoveIPToCellAbove KeySequence /Up
 Modify MoveIPToCellBelow KeySequence /Down

In FM 8, I had a modification installed (Shlomo Perets' toolbar). I added
these 4 lines to the existing custumui.cfg = table navigation via key
 arrows is now ON!

In FM 9 there was no customui.cfg, so I created this file with these 4
lines as the only content = table navigation is now ON!

So everything's fine and working in these older FM-versions. Thank you!

 Best regards -

 Tino H. Haida, Berlin

 Hi Fred,

I specifically tested the four I modified with FrameMaker 10 and they
worked. I don't have 9 anymore so I can't test it with 9. Send me the modify
sequences you tried and I will test them. It could be a problem specific to
9, but maybe the syntax isn't exactly right. Thanks.

 Thanks Rick and Syed.

In my poking around earlier today, I did find these commands in cmds.cfg and
tried to reassign the MoveIPToCellAbove and ...CellBelow commands to more
convenient shortcut keys. But whether I left them alone, changed the
KeySequence definition, or added a Modify command, those two MoveIP
commands refuse to do anything. ...CellAtLeft and ...CellAtRight both work,
as do MoveIPUpAndSelectText and MoveIPDownAndSelectText, but not the two
commands I specifically want to use. I suppose I'll just have to use the
move and select commands, because at least it's better than having to reach
for the mouse every damn time.

What's frustrating is that I *know* these commands worked in FM5.5.6, 6.0,
7.x and 8.0. Chalk up one mlore feature that got broken and never fixed when
Adobe saw fit to impose their stupid and inconvenient (and buggy...) UI on
 us with version 9.0. Sigh...

I suppose I *should* report this bug to Adobe, but every time I have done it
in the past has been an exercise in ultimate frustration. Every time it has
taken me between one and two hours to accomplish something that should have
taken 10-15 minutes. And ever since software development and maintenance was
moved to Bangalore, the only response I have ever gotten to a reported bug
was that we fixed the software to make it work the way it was supposed to
work. Never mind that the new behavior was illogical and inconsistent with
how other similar features worked, the mere fact that FrameMaker now behaved
differently meant that a whole flock of my carefully designed procedures and
processes no longer worked. I might have chalked it up to job security, but
my employer (by acquisition...) chose to shut down their operation here in
New Jersey. But that's a story for another day...

 Thanks for your efforts, guys.

Re: Cursor key navigation in tables - and another thing (graphic frame placement)

2013-03-18 Thread Lin Sims
I created a customui.cfg file and put it in the fminit\configui folder
and it works perfectly. The only caveat, as I noted in a different
email, is that cursor navigation apparently no longer works in regular
text.

Bruce Foster's ImpGraph plugin did what you wanted, but with his death
it is, as far as I know, no longer available. Maybe someone has a copy
they'd be willing to give you.

Cmds.cfg (which I see someone has already mentioned...)
 Mathcmds.cfg
 Sample.cfg
 Wincmds.cfg

Or do I need to create a config folder and a file called customui.cfg?

Oh, and while I'm emailing the list:
Whenever I put a new graphic frame in (eg when doing Esc fif to place a

it is a pain to have to reset this each time.
I hunted through the maker.ini file but found nothing. Is there some way of
setting FM to always left-align new graphic frames?

 Thanks,

Been a while since I looked at them, but have you checked out the

Re: FM 10 list of pods becomes detached

Grab the pod and start moving it SLOWLY toward the edge of the frame

Took me FOREVER to pick up that one, and it's hard because that line

Searchable Text in PDF Graphics

2013-01-08 Thread Lin Sims
Used to be (at least as of FM8), if you distilled a document that had
an SVG in it, text in the graphic would be searchable in the PDF. This
doesn't seem to be the case in FM10. Is there a distiller setting I'm
missing? I really, REALLY need that text to be searchable in the PDF.

Never mind ... it looks as if the issue is not with Frame, but with
the SVG export from Visio. We're not sure what's causing the problem,
but we have confirmed that some SVG graphics distill with searchable

Can you send your numbering properties for all the numbered tags? I'm
not sure without looking at them, but I have a feeling that you're

The hang of it is returning, but I have a strange auto numbering issue. Hope
 you can help.

The figure numbering for the chapter breaks when I add auto numbered figures
 and tables.

Several files in the book. Each file is actually its own manual, and I want
the book to see each as a volume (Vol 1, 2, 3, etc.). That's working OK. I
want each file to start with chapter t after the preliminary pages (Title
page and TOC). The Book is set up as follows:
 1st file :
 Volume: #1
Chapter: #1 (If I make this Read from File it doesn't change anything)

 All other files:
Volume: Continue numbering from previous file in book.
 Chapter: Read from File

 Headings are H:Heading1, H:Heading2, etc.

If figure format is H:Figuresectionnum\tn+, I get:

 2 Heading
 2.1 Heading
 Figure 1-5
 Figure 1-6
 1.6 Heading
 Figure 1-7
 really messed up

If figure format is F:Figuren\tn+, I get:
It does not recognize Heading 1 as n but Heading numbers are not
influenced by inserting numbers, but the figures do not adopt the section
 number:

 2.3 heading
 Figure 1-3
 Figure 1-4
 2.3.1 Heading
 Figure 1-6

If figure format is H:Figuren\tn+.\t (as suggested by a post from some
 sight), I get:

 1 Heading
 Figure 0-1
 Figure 0-2
 2 Heading
 Figure 0-3
 2.3 Heading
 Figure 0-4
 2.3.1 Heading
 Figure 0-5

What should I do to get:

 1 Heading
 Figure 1-1
 1.1 Heading
 Figure 1-2
 2 Heading
 Figure 2-1
 Figure 2-2
 2.1 Heading
 Figure 2-3
 2.1.1 Heading
 Figure 2-4
 and so forth

 Thank you!

Re: Cross-reference to a previous file

2012-12-12 Thread Lin Sims
It does, actually, but since we make sure that the text is black, it
doesn't LOOK like it's clickable. People are so accustomed to links
being blue and/or underlined that they never think to hover over text
that looks like all the other text. Social engineering at its finest.

Lin, wouldn't that make it into a link, after PDFing? I'm assuming that
one wants other xrefs to be live links and so one leaves that option
checked in PDF Settings. If xrefs aren't automatically being made into
 links, that would work fine.

Roger, can't you use the Volume value at the book level on the files(s)
and then use that building block in the H/F? Or have you already used
that building block for other purposes?

As a final, hacky solution, you could make a super-stripped file (I use
MIF editing to kill, like, EVERY catalog I can) and then have one of
those files for each part, in which you define a Variable to carry the
H/F text? That way, you could still use book-wide variables (in another
blank file or in your main template) to apply major Variables and the
part-level blank file to apply minor variables afterwards. Kind of
manual, but not nearly so much as other methods.

[I don't have/use FM9+, but it seems like setting the parts up as
books-in-a-book would let you access other Numbering properties
(Section, Sub-Section). So your 'part' text would be the Chapter
values--with their para styles handling numbering via autonumbering--and
then Section would handle your 'chapter' numbering in the
 book-in-book.]

to my surprise, it seems that it is not possible to make columns conditional,
only rows. Is this correct? it's stymied a Cunning Plan I had. Partially.

Conditional columns in tables

2012-12-06 Thread Lin Sims
Yep. Ran into this a couple of days ago. I've since made two tables,
one with the column and one without, and conditionaled the appearance.
A nuisance, but workable.

Acrobat X Pro Crashing

2012-12-04 Thread Lin Sims
Has anyone else had issues with Acrobat X Pro crashing? Mine seems to
crash under two conditions, if I'm working extensively with comments
or if I've been making a lot of searches. My warning sign is that
things start to disappear from the GUI, usually icons but sometimes
text. We're not talking about huge files here, either, maybe a few
hundred pages with maybe a few hundred comments.

Win 7, Service Pack 1, 64-bit
Adobe Acrobat X Pro, 10.0.0
Intel i5, 2.60 GHz
6G RAM

One of my coworkers says he's been having the same kind of issues, but
he's often working in PDFs of a couple thousand pages with a few
thousand comments.

Like all writers and office workers, we usually have multiple programs
open at the same time, and I'm wondering if this is the problem. Hints
or advice welcome!

Thanks.

ANN: List of FrameMaker Utilities and Plugins, v4.0, now available

2012-11-18 Thread Lin Sims
For those interested, the list update has been completed.

Jeremy Griffith is kindly hosting it on his site, and you can find it here:

http://mif2go.com/framemaker-resources

If you can't get to the web site, contact me off-list and I'll email
you directly.

Don't forget Scott Prentice's Tool Search, which will also give you
information on FrameScripts.

http://leximation.com/toolsearch/

There are two lists this time through; one sorted by the name of the
utility/plugin and one sorted by the supplier. I've also added a table
for plugins that are, as far as I can determine, no longer publicly
available.

Corrections, additions, deletions, etc., are welcome.

Frame always assumes it's xrefing within the same document.

When I know I'm going to be inserting multiple xrefs to other

location in the other document.

Table Navigation shortcut keys, Frame 10

2012-10-05 Thread Lin Sims
I'm having an interesting issue with using shortcut navigation keys in
tables. All of them work EXCEPT for moving to the cell in the row
above or below the current row. Naturally, right now those are the
ones I want to use!

Anyone have an idea what might cause this? It's installed on my hard
drive and has all of the updates. There are no plugins (sob!). The
interface is Unstructured.

(And happy weekend.)

So it's not just me. Rats. (If it were just me, that would imply
something that could be fixed.)

Thanks, Rob.

I've encountered a wide variety of keyboard navigation bugs in FM10.
One thing I found that helped was sticking with the default workspace.
But Esc tmd/u don't work for me.
