Table jumps to next page

2011-08-30 Thread Tim J. Slager
Frame 10
Windows 7

I have a multi-page table that skips to the next page to start, leaving most of
the previous page blank. The table is preceded by a heading. Both the heading
and the table start on the next page.

-Table is set to Start: Anywhere

-Heading is set to Start: Anywhere

-When I change the heading to body text, the table starts on previous
page as it should.

-All pertinent settings in the heading seem to be identical to those
for body text...

-Hold on... If I clear the Keep With: Next Pgf for the heading, the
heading and table don't jump to the next page. This doesn't make sense to me
but, hey, it works.

-I'm downgrading this inquiry from Help! to Why?

I'm using FM 10, Unstructured.

I can't find in the help where to change the color of the rule under a
paragraph, and I don't have my copy of Unstructured FrameMaker 8, which I
always turn to first when I have questions like this.

How do I change the color of a rule that I apply to a paragraph in the

The defined color indicator is red with underline. I checked, and it is still
defined this way. I tried it combined with another condition, which has a color

What color is defined as the condition indication for the condition that is
disappearing? If its color is set to white (or any *very* light color) you will

make this condition be invisible via the condition indication rather than the
Show/Hide rule.

Hi,
IT recently upgraded my FM version to FM 10 and now it seems I'm running into a
resource issue (either processor speed or RAM--they think). As part of the
solution, they're advocating that I change my computer from Win XP to Win 7.

I know there's been some discussion in the past about Win 7 not "playing nice"
with FrameMaker.  Is this still the case and if so, can someone please describe
what's the issue?  I just want to be aware of any "gotchas" prior to them
changing over my machine. I'd appreciate any insight anyone has into this
issue. (Note that I'm also running FM
7.2 and 9 on the same machine that has FM 10.)

Thanks,
Melissa

RE: So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

2011-03-03 Thread Tim J. Slager
I had lock-up problems with 7.2 on Win 7. I could take care of the lock-ups by
running it in administrator mode, but then updating books and generating PDFs
was extremely slow, so I would switch back and forth between modes. I'm
enjoying 10 now.

I think it's too bad Adobe doesn't allow an upgrade from 7, and FM is pricey.
But I also don't understand companies balking at buying software that, in the
scheme of things, is reasonable. How many upgrades would a CEO's bonus buy?
Which does more for a company's health and productivity?

I'm looking at buying the latest version because our company is moving everyone
to Windows 7, and FrameMaker 7.2 isn't supported on that OS. It doesn't mean it
won't work, but our management prefers to play it safe.

I do not know if it is altogether a bad thing to be using Frame 7. I sort of
just wanted to know that other people are also using Frame of that vintage.

So how many of us are stuck with Frame 7.2?

Conditional table rows

2011-01-28 Thread Tim J. Slager
I'm experimenting with conditional text in Unstructured FM 10.

I started to write an email to this list to ask if it was normal that FM 10
could not find conditional table rows, since I couldn't seem to find
conditional table rows, and I couldn't find this in the help files. But I did a
Google search before sending the email. I found this help file
(http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS25F3553F-C76C-4f49-9C16-E251912A7D42.html#WS95B8918A-2D69-4647-B532-9FC7B2FDF7D0)
which explains, "FrameMaker cannot find conditional table rows."

Too bad, I thought, but now I know. Then I practiced the steps found in the
same help file for searching for conditional text. Lo and behold, I could
indeed find conditional table rows. How nice, I thought. But now I'm confused.

Can someone explain why the help says you can't find conditional table rows,
and what expected behavior is?

Thanks. tims

RE: FrameMaker and Version Control Software

Alison,

We recently switched to Subversion from Rational ClearCase for some of the same
reasons. I use Tortoise SVN (http://tortoisesvn.net/), which integrates with
Windows Explorer. And yes, you can lock files, which is a good idea with binary
files since you can't merge changes with those anyhow.

SVN has been a huge improvement over ClearCase. Very easy to set up and use.
Jump at the opportunity. You will probably have to get used to some different
terminology (for example you commit files not check them in) but that doesn't
take long.

I started asking question last week about backups on my version control
database and it turns out that no backups are done (as the sole writer, I am
the only user of the Documentation database).

The Lead Software engineer has been trying to get me to change from Microsoft's
Visual Source Safe to the open source product that the R&D department has
switched to: Subversion. The problem is, he's never given me any compelling
reasons to change and his description of how Subversion works hasn't made me
want to make the switch.

After talking with one of the hardware engineers today, I can now see reasons:

- Microsoft's has very strict "use" recommendations
(http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Bb509342) which really mean I
shouldn't be using VSS anymore as I fall outside the 3-5 Gb guideline (after
4-1/2 years, my db is now 17 Gb). Database corruption is a real threat
- contrary to what I was led to believe, you *can* actually lock files
on checkout. Apparently the programmers don't use this functionality but as I
foresee a second writer at some point, locking files seems pretty important to
me

What do other people use for version control of documentation files? Does
anyone have any experience (good or bad) with either of these specific programs?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

FYI: Not only do I keep FM files in VSS, I also keep all my image files and my
older Word-based docs.

Does anyone remember Microsoft Photo Editor. Trying to get photos,
screen captures, any graphic out of Word using everything I have learned
over 16 years being a technical writer never worked. One day I happened
to be on one of the old computers at my home and Microsoft Photo Editor
was installed, so I put the Word file on the old computer, opened it,
copied a graphic from it into Photo Editor by selecting Edit then Past
as New Image in Photo Editor and VOILA, I could save as .BMP, .JPG, etc
with NO QUALITY LOSS. I use the method to this day. Hope everyone finds
this helpful.

Extracting embedded graphics from Word

2010-07-01 Thread Tim J. Slager
The newer MSO Picture Manager also saves files with no quality loss. It is also
handy for batch exporting to other formats or sizes.

Hi all -

I just found out that client is going to make the writers recapture all
the screens so I'm off the hook. Thanks for all the helpful info!

ARE: Framemaker 9 vs Microsoft Word

2010-06-08 Thread Tim J. Slager
I was saying that Word can function reliably with large documents on a regular
basis, provided one uses styles and templates, as recommended. (Just expect
some exasperation with numbered lists.)

The programming option makes it possible to do things that go beyond any other
word processing program I have encountered. It was something I would not have
been aware of if a tech-writer-turned-VBA-programmer had not demonstrated it. I
thought others might not be aware of this, either. Minor but thoughtful
programming that was added to the template led to enthusiastic acceptance of
the template by virtually the entire international company because it was so
easy to use--and reliable. For example, a single button click reformatted
tables to the standard and a dialog box converted documents from an old format
to the new international standard.

Sorry for running the two concepts together. Not saying Word is better than
Frame, just different with some positive aspects. (I still despise Word's
numbering.)

I rather find the apology that Word can be made to function reliably
ONLY IF one reprograms it to be begging the question. It is usually
thought that one buys software that functions without the user having to
fix the program they just spent a few hundred dollars on.

Frame is clunky; Word is quirky.

I have to agree numbered lists are Word's Achilles heal, although I can
(usually) get them to work.

I worked for 10 years at a company where we used Word to create professional
documentation with page counts reaching into the thousands with very consistent
template styles and rare file corruption. We had the advantage of a developer
who could make Word do almost anything and had custom tool bars and automated
documentation generation built into Word. The flexibility allowed by VBA
programming is a great strength of Word.

folder structure

2010-05-18 Thread Tim J. Slager
I inherited a book with chapters and files in a complex directory structure. We
are changing from one version-control software to another, so now would be a
good time to change the folder structure.

The complex structure makes it difficult to check out all the files in a book
at once. It seems to me that it would be easier to have files that are common
across products in a common files folder, and to have all the rest of the .FM
files for each product/FM book in a single folder, with images in an adjacent
folder.

I am wondering if there are recommendations for file structure, and what are
the gotchas I'm likely to encounter if I move things around.

Thanks. tims

RE: Running Headers

Steve,

I'm new to FM and inherited the set of files. I'm not sure why some of the
chapters are broken up into smaller pieces, but if I can't figure out a good
reason for it, I'll probably combine the chunks into full chapters for the sake
of consistency. That should take care of my problem. In the mean time I can try
some of the suggestions offered from this list.

Thanks, everyone. tims

I'm not aware of having a variable pull a value from a different
physical file. Have you ever done that before? I expect the solution
is to use text insets rather than have one chapter split into multiple
files. One chapter should be one physical file for sanity's sake.

Alternatively, you might have to go with different variables but I
probably wouldn't go that route. (IOW, in Chapter 1, file 2, have a
variable that gets the value of ChapterTitleInvisible that is in the
file but doesn't display because it's in white text or is tagged with
conditional text.) That would be too hard to maintain.

Running Headers

2010-04-27 Thread Tim J. Slager
FM 7.2
---
I have running headers that reference Chapter Title on left pages and Heading 1
on right pages. Some chapters have multiple files, so they don't include a
Chapter Title and sometimes not even a Heading 1.

I expected that within a book the variable would pick up the referenced
paragraph from an earlier file. This doesn't seem to be the case, and I now
have blank headers on some pages of the final document.

How do I fix this? I couldn't find an answer in my Unstructured FrameMaker 8
book, so if you know it's in there, just point me in the right direction.

Thanks. tims

Thanks. tims

Pagination problem

2010-04-14 Thread Tim J. Slager
Thanks, everyone, for being so helpful! This list is going to make my life
easier.

I sort of accidentally managed to get an acceptable solution for the time
being. I was poking in the right areas, at least. Right now, one of the pages
that I would rather have start on a right page starts on a left page.

I will go through all your suggestions until I feel confident that I know what
causes the problem and how to fix it (when I have the time).

Thanks again. tims

I assume that the pagination is set to double-sided (ie, left/right). If the
preface has several individual FM documents in it, my guess is that each
document is set to start on the right page, and the text of the troublesome
document ends on a right page. Therefore, FM adds a blank left page so the next
document can start on a right page.
