Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-15 Thread Robert Lauriston
I wouldn't bother looking at WebWorks if RoboHelp's output is acceptable.

At my last job we switched because RoboHelp output looked lousy and there
was browser-specific bugs Adobe didn't fix, but that was RH9 ten years ago.

WebWorks' HTML output looked much better and seemed bug-free. It was also
much easier to manage the source in Subversion.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-13 Thread Orly Zimmerman
HI Robert,
This is also what I've found - linking FM source files to generate the online
help.
My team started me off using FM because they wanted PDF deliverables - silicon
documentation are hefty books and FM keeps them all wrapped up very nicely and
very stable - publishes fine PDFs that can be jointly reviewed easily, so all
that is good, and very important for us.
On the other hand, now marketing is thinking about moving to online help.
Since I have the Tech Suite, I have RH included within my tools.
Do you think Webworks would justify its expense, or what advantage would it
have, if any over RH 2020?
To be fair, I understand that Adobe revamped RH from scratch, so I'm hoping it
can do a fine job (haven't tested it yet, but on the other hand, I haven't used
any online tools yet either).
Just checking to see what added advantages you, or if anyone else would like to
chime in)  think Webworks has.
Thanks,
Orly Zimmerman

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
WebWorks ePublisher Pro supports source in Word, DITA, and FrameMaker.

RoboHelp, Flare, and WebWorks can all produce professional-quality
PDFs. Pushing a client to FrameMaker when they've never used it
doesn't seem to me like a good move in 2022 unless maybe PDF and/or
print are the only deliverables.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-11 Thread John Posada
Thanks, Robert. At this gig, RH is an established priority tool, Their
content authoring starts in Word.

Should this go through, after I've proven my worth, my intent is to try to
switch them to FM as they need printed documentation/PDFs in addition to
online help.

I've done Online Helps using FM/WebWorks ePublisher Pro and I agree it is a
better solution. However, it might be too much of a lift to revamp the
WHOLE process than to upgrade in stages.

Proposing RH/FM as an integrated authoring environment might be attractive.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker to Robohelp Integration

2022-03-11 Thread Robert Lauriston
FrameMaker's multichannel publishing is a subset of RoboHelp features.
If that subset meets your needs, you don't need RoboHelp.

I don't think the integration options have changed since I was using
them at my last job. Adobe documents importing FrameMaker into
RoboHelp, but I don't see that they have ever documented what seemed
to me the best practice, which is keeping the source in FrameMaker and
linking it to RoboHelp. I created sample projects and some
documentation:

http://lauriston.com/fm10_link_to_rh9.zip

At my last job we switched from RoboHelp to WebWorks ePublisher Pro,
which I thought was a far superior tool for generating online help and
web pages from FrameMaker source.

[Framers] FrameMaker 12 - RoboHelp 11 - Graphics Conversion shows bad results

2016-02-08 Thread thomas . zeisig
We are using TCS 5 and encounter blurry graphics when we convert a
FrameMaker book to HTML Help.
All graphics are referenced in the FrameMaker files and are mainly Tiffs
with 632x475 px at 200 dpi.
Due to our layout we want to become the graphics in the on-line help
enlarged to 200 %.
It seems that RoboHelp converts the graphics in two stages, in the first
stage the graphics will be resized to 96 dpi, 303x228 px.
In the second stage this 96 dpi graphic is then scaled to 200% which
results in bad image quality.
Is there any way to change this conversion behaviour?
If I resize such a tiff in Photoshop I get perfect quality, but it is a
one stage conversion.
BTW: We tested RoboHelp 2015 too, with the same result.

Best Regards  - Thomas Zeisig

Update: I found ExtendScript unreliable. Scripts that worked fine for
months would stop working for no apparent reason, and it was too
inadequately documented and supported for me resolve the problems. So,
I've switched to FrameScript.

I uploaded a script to the FrameScript Users group on Yahoo that opens
a book, sets conditions for PDF, updates the book, saves as PDF, sets
conditions for online help, saves the book, runs a batch file to
generate online help (with RoboHelp), sets conditions for normal
editing, and closes the book.

single ExtendScript for FrameMaker 10 RoboHelp 9 (TCS 3.5)?

2012-04-16 Thread Robert Lauriston
I posted this on the Adobe FrameMaker Scripting forum but got no
response so far.

I'm trying to automate generation of PDF and WebHelp from the same
FrameMaker source

I have a FrameMaker ExtendScript that sets conditional text for PDF,
updates the book, generates PDF, sets conditional text for online
help, and updates the book. It's a minor variation on
FM10_INSTALL_DIR\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional
Text\FM_Outputs_CondText.jsx.

I have a RoboHelp ExtendScript that updates the FrameMaker source
(thanks Willam van Weelden):

var projectPath = C:\\path\\filename.xpj;

main();

function main()
{
if(projectPath == )
{
   //Error!. Quit RoboHelp
   alert(Project path is not defined. \nPlease update the
'projectPath' variable in the script.);
   RoboHelp.quit();
}
RoboHelp.openProject(projectPath); //Open the project
RoboHelp.project.updateAll(true); //Update all linked
documents (pass true for Force update)
}

Is there some way to combine these into a single script, or to launch
the RoboHelp script at the end of the FrameMaker script? More
generally, has anyone seen a sample ExtendScript performing operations
in multiple applications?

updates the book, generates PDF, sets conditional text for online
help, and updates the book. It's a minor variation on
\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional
Text\FM_Outputs_CondText.jsx.

I have a RoboHelp ExtendScript that updates the FrameMaker source
(thanks Willam van Weelden):

var projectPath = "C:.xpj";

main();

function main()
{
if(projectPath == "")
{
   //Error!. Quit RoboHelp
   alert("Project path is not defined. \nPlease update the
'projectPath' variable in the script.");
   RoboHelp.quit();
}
RoboHelp.openProject(projectPath); //Open the project
RoboHelp.project.updateAll(true); //Update all linked
documents (pass true for Force update)
}

Is there some way to combine these into a single script, or to launch
the RoboHelp script at the end of the FrameMaker script? More
generally, has anyone seen a sample ExtendScript performing operations
in multiple applications?

For future reference, with minor changes,
FM_INSTALL_DIR\Samples\ScriptsAndUtilities\Conditional
Text\FM_Outputs_CondText.jsx that comes with FM10 handles step 2. The
rest isn't really relevant to this list.

RE: FrameMaker and RoboHelp Combination for Single Sourcing

2011-06-09 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Yes, it's possible - I do the same thing (only generating WebHelp instead of
CHM). If you want both types of output to look the same, you'll have to do some
CSS tweaking to bring the appearance of the CHM help into line with the
formatting present within your FM PDFs. First place to start is with the
Conversion Settings within RH when you import - that's the first chance you
have at mapping your FM paragraph character formatting to RH's styles. You
can save that off in an .isf file for future use. Also, you can apply (I
believe) a single CSS file to all topics when you create your CHM. I created
one called apply2all.css that contained all my tweaks that gets applied to all
topics and overrides the individual css files that each topic gets created when
a FM doc is imported.

Yes, and if the structure of the information is different, you can
always maintain two book files. Use one for PDF, and the other for
import into RH. Note that you will need to design your content
accordingly, perhaps using many fm files for one chapter in PDF in
order to satisfy two very different content models. But if it's just
look and feel, you can certainly do this with import via css.

Hi Steve,

To follow on Jeff's excellent suggestion, right-click on the imported FM book
in RH and choose Properties.

From there, you can select the option to convert the FM toc. After specifying a
toc name, you can set your webhelp ssl to use the FM toc.

Why not try creating the ToC in FM and then have it brought over into your RH

I am trying to link a FrameMaker book into RoboHelp to create an online help
system. When I have RoboHelp auto-create a Table of Contents, the section
headings (created from the bookmarks) are named like:
XREF_56898_About_Application
I need to eliminate the XREF_56898 from the section headings when RoboHelp
creates the TOC. Instead, I need to have the TOC section headings named in a
pretty format to match the heading names when viewing the book.
RoboHelp seems to get a low-level bookmark name from the FrameMaker book when
naming the section headings. Has anyone seen behavior like this before?
I am using FrameMaker 10 and RoboHelp 9. My output format is WebHelp.

The steps I follow are:

1. Create a new blank project in RoboHelp.

2. Right-click on Project Files, choose Link, choose FrameMaker Document.

3. Choose the FrameMaker .book file

4. Right-click on WebHelp and choose Generate, to generate the WebHelp
HTML output.

5. In the RoboHelp TOC pod, click the AutoCreate TOC button.

Any help or advice is much appreciated.
Thank you,
-Steve K

FrameMaker to RoboHelp XREF in WebHelp TOC output

2011-04-30 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Why not try creating the ToC in FM and then have it brought over into your RH
project? Or you could hand-edit all the ToC entries to make them look nice.

Hi Martha

Kevin Stiegel's book "Essentials of Adobe RoboHelp 8 HTML" goes some of the
way, though it does not talk much about integration with FrameMaker. ISBN

There's a TCS2 group on Google groups:

Subject: FrameMaker and RoboHelp

Hi All,

I'm looking for some resources to learn how to use RoboHelp with FrameMaker.
I have Technical Communication Suite 2.0, and I can't find any tutorials
about how to use these two programs together. The online help for Robohelp
doesn't include any kind of tutorial, and even more disappointing, the
online help for RoboHelp is not context sensitive. I have been trying to
link a FrameMaker book, but I only get one file out of 8 to show up when I
try to generate WebHelp.

I found a link on the Web for a demo by RJ Jacquez
(http://rjacquez.com/linking_framemaker_9_books_in/), but every time I try
to play it, a second instance starts a few seconds after the first one, so I
get two presentations playing at once, but out of sync.

Don't know if it's relevant, but I'm running Win XP64 with 8 GB of RAM, dual
processors, 3.2 GHz each.

I'd be very grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks.

Porting FrameMaker To RoboHelp

2008-08-22 Thread Tony Marek

Re: Template question, FrameMaker to RoboHelp HTML

2008-06-18 Thread Matt Sullivan
Hi Steve,

Have you considered applying a unique tag to the anchor para, mapping it to a
css style?

I'm not a css code jockey, but you should then be able to override the
placement inherited from FM

I'm out of the office right now, so email cell phone (714 585 2335) are the
best ways to get in touch with me today.

I'm new. This is my first post. I've cross posted. Please excuse my
directness, I'm under the gun...

FrameMaker 8.0 and RoboHelp 7 HTML as part of the Technical
Communication Suite.

I have a FrameMaker book that uses a template designed for publishing
to PDF. I am trying to create a new template to reformat the content
for importing the entire book (.book file) into a RoboHelp HTML
WebHelp project.

My only problem is with anchored frames and the graphics.

In the template designed for Publish as PDF, all of the anchored
frames are aligned as Center and extend to both margins. The Inside
and Outside margins are set to 48. Some of the graphics are Offset
 From Left = 114.0 pt (This makes them flush with the Body paragraph
tag). Others are Offset From Left = 130.0 pt (this makes them flush
with the indented body paragraph tag).

I've created a new template where the Body paragraph tag is set to 0.0
pt. And the indented body paragraph tag is set to 16.0 pt.

When I import the FrameMaker book into RoboHelp (after applying the
new template), everything else looks fine, but all graphics are hard
set (Offset From Left) to 114pt and 130pt. (And this looks bad.)

I want to format the anchored frames and graphics in each template so
that when the Publish to PDF template is applied, the graphics are
flush with the 114pt Body paragraphAnd when the Import to
RoboHelp WebHelp template is applied, the graphics are flush with the
0.0 pt Body paragraph.

Paragraphs are easy to manipulate in a template. But I can find no
way to manipulate anchored frames or graphics. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Training Videos - Adobe Technical Communication Suite, FrameMaker and RoboHelp

2008-04-07 Thread Vivek Jain
Adobe Senior Product Evangelist, RJ Jácquez, has created three On Demand
training videos to help customers get started with Adobe Technical
Communication Suite. A large number of customers have been asking us for
training material on the Suite. I hope you will find this useful. Please see
the details below-

NEW Training Video! http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p29205929/ Getting Started
with the Technical Communication Suite: Part 1
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p29205929/
(http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p29205929/
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p29205929/ )

In Part 1, you will learn about leveraging live and interactive 3D models from
virtual any CAD/CAM/CAE software in your technical and instructional documents
using the Adobe Technical Communication Suite. This training video includes
all exercise files needed for you to follow along with the presenter, and
experience first-hand how to convert a 3D CAD file into a highly compressed 3D
PDF document and how the included 3D Toolkit software allows you to reuse this
model in FrameMaker and then generate an interactive and rich PDF document,
that you can distribute to anyone using the free Adobe Reader. The video also
guides you through the steps on how to further polish your 3D models using 3D
materials and by adding animation that shows your end-users how to disassemble
the model.

NEW Training Video! http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p25426010/ Getting Started
with the Technical Communication Suite: Part 2
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p25426010/
(http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p25426010/
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p25426010/ )

In Part 2, you will learn how to supplement your technical and instructional
design documents with engaging Adobe Captivate demonstrations, simulations and
quizzes in the Flash format using the Adobe Technical Communication Suite.
This training video includes all exercise files needed for you to follow along
with the presenter and experience first-hand how to create engaging Captivate
demonstrations, simulations and quizzes that can be imported into FrameMaker
documents and saved as PDF files, that end-users can playback using the free
Adobe Reader. The video also guides you through the steps needed to add a
printing poster in FrameMaker and how to generate a single .SWF file from
Captivate, which includes the playback bar in the PDF file, as well as other
best practices.

NEW Training Video! http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p13101233/ Getting Started
with the Technical Communication Suite: Part 3
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p13101233/
(http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p13101233/
http://my.adobe.acrobat.com/p13101233/ )

In Part 2, you will learn about adding FrameMaker books and documents in
RoboHelp as live links and reusing FrameMaker content for creating Online Help
systems, Searchable Knowledge bases, Performance Support systems and even
Policies and Procedures. Just like the first two, the exercise files are also
included in case you want to go over the integration features yourself.

Besides Adobe Technical Communication Suite, there are training videos for
Adobe FrameMaker 8
http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/framemaker/#tutorials  and
Adobe RoboHelp 7
http://www.adobe.com/support/documentation/en/robohelp/#tutorials  available
