Re: [Frameworks] Kodak analyst II won't stop

2016-03-19 Thread Stefan Grabowski
Hey Nic,

The plunger on the on the Analyst II is designed to reverse the direction of
the film, not stop it. All the ones I've used function this way. I imagine the
lamp on that specific projector runs too hot for it pause on a frame without
burning it, so the best you can do is slow it down and throttle the reverse
plunger if you want to review a shot. More advanced analytic projectors can
freeze on a single frame and advance one frame at a time. (We've got a "Pony"
at the AgX space which can do this if you need to borrow it).

Best,

Stefan

[Frameworks] Only 24 hours left – help a new artist-run film lab get off the ground!

2015-12-07 Thread Stefan Grabowski
Dearest Frameworkers,

AgX, Boston's new film collective with a focus on photochemical filmmaking
practice, is in the final hours of a $10,000 fundraising campaign that aims
primarily to cover the costs of building out our darkroom and moving several
prized pieces of equipment that are being donated to us (including an Oxberry
optical printer, Bell & Howell Model C contact printer, and Oxberry animation
stand). Please consider helping us meet our goal!

Once we've acquired this equipment, we'll have all the means to make full,
married sound prints in-house (minus the actual printing of the optical track,
until a sound camera comes out way) which will be a major evolutionary step for
the Boston-area film community, and eventually the broader film community as we
hope to open up to visiting artists and offer residencies in the future.

We're about three quarters of the way there and we've got some great incentives
for donating, including actual 16mm film prints of works by Robert Todd,
Richard Tuohy, and Stephen Broomer!

Check it out: http://igg.me/at/agx/x/11500530

Many thanks,

Re: [Frameworks] KOKDAK Ektachrome Super 8 G

2014-04-05 Thread Stefan Grabowski
I have a few rolls of Type-G kicking around that I've been meaning to process
as well. As far as I understand, it can be processed in E-6 chemicals, but
you'll have to remove the remjet backing (I think someone posted a formula for
a way to do that with borax not too long ago).

I've heard it was basically balanced for light in between Tungsten and
Daylight, giving everything sort of a greenish cast in the end. That leads me
to thinking it might look okay shooting under fluorescent lighting, but I still
haven't processed mine so I can't say for sure.

I think Kodak discontinued making the T-max kit a few years back, which is one
of the reasons why I process as a negative and then make my prints using kodak
7203 print stock. But you can still process as a reversal and there are recipes
out there to make your own bleach for reversal processing. Here is a link to my

Dear friends -- We hope you will join us for this
week's Balagan Film Series screenings! New details below...

Consuming Spirits (2012) by Chris Sullivan

Tuesday, September 17, 7:30pm, Brattle Theatre

Director in person!

This achingly sad, occasionally grotesque story of family secrets, sexual
longings and small-town malaise, told through drawings, paper cutouts and
miniature models, has more in common with intimate graphic novels like David
Small’s Stitches or Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home than with any live-action indie
melodrama I can think of. The wintry, northern, class-divided setting might
resonate with readers of Joyce Carol Oates. But the blend of narrative
quasi-realism and wild, somber visual invention in Consuming Spirits is
entirely original. — A. O. Scott, NY Times

Hi Sophie,

If you'll be in New York , you can buy 100' rolls of 16mm film from BH. Hunt's
Photo in Boston also stocks 16mm. Or you could purchase directly from Kodak if
you can wait for them to ship it.

For prints - FotoKem supposedly does good work though I haven't had much
experience with them. If you have time to send it to the East Coast, I highly
recommend sending to Colorlab in Maryland.

I've considered this myself but never tried it. Does anyone have any experience

I had this problem. Robert Schaller taught me that it will work much better if
you can find some print stock, and then put that in fixer without exposing it.
You'll remove the silver-halide, but leave the gelatin, and Liquid Light will
stick to this much better.

You can also dry it (in complete darkness) with a hair dryer for 10-15 min. I
found that this created a tighter bond that was sufficient for photograms and
contact prints on 4-6 ft strips of 16mm film. Regardless, be very gentle in the
processing and drying.

Howdy,

Trying to paint Liquid Light photo emulsion onto clear 16mm leader. exposing
photograms etc, then hand processing. But the emulsion is falling off by the
time we get to fixer. Works slightly better with clear film that has some
emulsion already on it, but not much. Anybody have any better experiences /
tips to share? Maybe spraying a clear varnish onto the leader first, or
roughing up with fine sandpaper? or . . .

Thanks Big!

Ah, Liberty! Ben Rivers

Note: unlike our past events, this show is on a Thursday and at 7:30pm.

With the natural world teetering on the brink of multilateral
catastrophe, a group of analog filmmakers have taken matters into their own
hands. Through direct contact with the medium – lifting and reassembling images
on the film strip – adhering waste matter to celluloid – leaving emulsion to
languish in the landfill – the artists interpret physical processes that ravage
our land. Their grave methods yield results of unexpected poetry, vibrancy and
beauty.

The evening will feature a live performance by the experimental music
group Duck That and a special, collaborative, locally-made project by the
Papercut Zine Library.

[Frameworks] Balagan 2013: next show + kickstarter

2013-02-14 Thread Stefan Grabowski

Balagan '13: next show + kickstarter

Dear film friends!

We are happy to return to regular programming in 2013 -- see the upcoming
program below -- but, to keep going, we are asking for your help. We need to
raise $5,000 by March 16th: check out the Kickstarter campaign here. (We've got
some nice prizes!)

A few things to remember when you consider helping us out --

- we, the curators, work for free

- we pay the filmmakers we screen

[Frameworks] Balagan Films presents: In Captivity - December 4th (Cambridge, MA)

2012-11-27 Thread Stefan Grabowski

IN CAPTIVITY · four films · Tuesday, December 4, 8pm · Brattle Theatre

In this time of extreme industrialization, wilderness is all but forgotten. In
cities, the trees are kept in corrals, with clearly posted visiting hours, if
not caged up in solitary confinement.

While we had originally intended to put together a program of works celebrating
the wild, both around us and within, we quickly realized that captivity was
inescapable. Wild and tame – free and enslaved – are fundamentally entwined
concepts. The very notion of liberty exists only to contrast the many
constraints that humans have built.

Come and be our captive (or captivated?) audience for the Boston premieres of
new films by Daniel Sousa and Robert Todd, as well as classics by Malcolm Le
Grice and Jonas Mekas (presented in 16mm). We promise not to lock the doors.

PROGRAM

Feral, Daniel Sousa, 2012, 13m, video

Construct, Robert Todd, 2012, 12m, 16mm

Berlin Horse, Malcolm Le Grice, 1970, 7m, 16mm

- intermission -

[Frameworks] Tonight! Nov 6: Balagan presents Spectral Evidence

2012-11-06 Thread Stefan Grabowski

We are very proud and excited to present premieres of three new films by
artists with Boston and NY ties, accompanied by a deliciously crisp 35mm print
of a piece by Martha Colburn.

 Featuring -

Hay Algo y Se Va by Kim Arnias

2012, 2:53, 16mm - world premiere!

(There is something. Now it's gone.) A perpetual sea of bodies, gestures and
gazes collide to create a familiar yet estranging family reunion.

 Heritage by Cate Giordano

 2012, 30:23, video - Boston premiere!

Shot by Patrick Guerrero. With Julianna Schley.

It is 1888 and all the buffalo are gone, leaving one of the largest cities in
South Dakota empty. Now there are only two residents left. Shot 'on location'
in the streets of New York City, Heritage is a melodrama about a man, played by
a woman, who learns to deal with the reality of change and the freedom of being
alone.

 Gold by Nellie Kluz

 2012, 20 min, video - world premiere!

 A vérité-style meditation on modern-day alchemy.

 and

 Cosmetic Emergency by Martha Colburn

 2005, 8 min, 35mm

Cosmetic Emergency explores the idea of beauty through a collage of live
action and lyrical animations. A free-form take on the current trend of
cosmetic obsession and the immortal quality of painting, the film searches for
what’s on the inside.

Followed by an election-results afterparty at The First Printer.

[Frameworks] Sep 4: St. Petersburg (RUS) Doc. Film Studio at Brattle Theatre

2012-08-31 Thread Stefan Grabowski

80th ANNIVERSARY OF ST. PETERSBURG DOC. FILM STUDIO · 9/4 at 8pm · Brattle
Theatre

Established in 1932 (and tracing its history to as early as 1914), the St.
Petersburg Documentary Film Studio continues to support a group of world-class
filmmakers who regularly present 35mm and digital films at international
festivals.

Among the most acclaimed members of this collective are three filmmakers
featured on September 4th: Pavel Medvedev, a legendary figure who appeared at
the 2009 Flaherty Seminar; Sergei Loznitsa, who has recently received
international attention for his Cannes entries
My Joy and
In the Fog; and Alina Rudnitskaya, an investigator of female roles in Russian
society, whose most recent film
I Will Forget This Day made an impact at a host of international festivals.

ALL FILMS PRESENTED ON 35MM WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES. Program:

On the Third Planet from the Sun (Na tret'ei ot solntsa planete), Pavel
Medvedev, 2006, 35mm, 32 mins

The Russian North. People who live here pick up “space garbage” in the bog,
sell the scrap metal or use it in housekeeping and farming. In the Arkhangelsk
region, forty-five years since nuclear bomb experiments, life is going its
ordinary way.

Bitch Academy (Kak stat' stervoi), Alina Rudnitskaya, 2007, 35mm, 31 mins

There was a time when the word “bitch” was perceived as negative. But today it
has become a bestseller. A bitch has become a kind of ideal to a modern woman,
a real hero of our day. Most women older than fifteen seek to be a bitch. Who
is a vixen, a modern bitch? Vixen is a woman that follows her own desires, she
relies only on herself, clearly understands what she wants to get from life and
men, doesn’t follow the stereotypes, knows men’s “weak” points, is
self-supporting and has inner freedom. The main shooting technique is a method
of observation. This film can be called “the best documentary comedy” about
women.

Factory (Fabrika), Sergei Loznitsa, 2004, 35mm, 30 mins

Masculine and feminine, hard and soft, continued and interrupted, whole and
fragmented. All that is encompassed by just one day at the factory.

And... coming up on October 2nd: Boston-based filmmaker and curator Dagmar
Kamlah will curate an evening of films by the Oberhausen Manifesto group -- a
1960s' collective of radical German filmmakers who strove to break away from
Papa's Kino. As the collective celebrates its 50th anniversary, film
institutions around the world look back at these innovative and ambitious works.

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm Camera In The Fridge

2012-08-07 Thread Stefan Grabowski

Film is not so unstable that it should hurt by being at room temperature (even
a warm room) for a couple weeks. I've shot rolls of film that have sat in warm
closets for years and still come out fine in developing. While I don't imagine
the temperature of a fridge would do a lot of harm to the camera, I would worry
about moisture getting into it.

Subject: [Frameworks] 16mm Camera In The Fridge

 Hey Guys,

So I'm looking for a way to keep film in a camera for awhile in an apartment
that sometimes gets pretty warm. I'm wondering how bad of an idea it'd be to
keep the camera in the fridge.

I'm working on a project that mostly involves stills but also some motion,
I'd like to able to keep exposed film in my Scoopic possibly over the course
of a week or two if not longer. Any ideas?

 Thanks,
 Alex McCarron

[Frameworks] July 3 in Cambridge, MA: Balagan presents Reflection/Refraction

2012-07-01 Thread Stefan Grabowski

Reflection/Refraction

Tuesday, July 3, 2012

Screening begins at 8pm. $10 regular / $8 student and senior. Brattle Theatre.
balaganfilms.com
A look into any mirror presents an image familiar yet curious -- a backwards
world and an unblinking face staring back at you. The physical imperfections of
its surface reflect distorted truths, often unnoticed but always present. You
can never truly see yourself. Even the mind's eye sees a warped self-image,
refracted by subjective perception and experience.
This program features films that explore the ideas of reflection and
refraction, through content, composition and structure. The final piece will be
a unique performance of 16mm manipulation and live sound by Architecture of the
Sun. A few of the pieces in this program will also be featured as part of a
traveling program on the theme of personal space, within the home or within the
mind. More information on that program, Private Territory, can be viewed at
privateterritoryfilmtour.com.

[Frameworks] March 13th in Boston: the amazing Bruce Bickford at Balagan

2012-03-08 Thread Stefan Grabowski

Prometheus Unhinged: The Films of Bruce Bickford

March 13th, 8pm, Brattle Theatre, Cambridge, MA

We are incredibly excited to present, in person, the legendary animator Bruce
Bickford and a program of his films next Tuesday night. His work has to be seen
to be believed, so we will give you a little preview here. By the way, we'll be
projecting the films in their intended formats, including 35mm!

Born in Seattle, WA in 1947, Bruce Bickford first began animating clay at the
age of 17. Upon graduating from high school, he spent three years in the
military, before moving to Los Angeles to find work. In LA, he met Frank Zappa
and formed a six-year long business relationship creating visuals to accompany
Zappa's music live and on video releases. At the end of that partnership,
Bickford returned to his home in Seattle and continues to obsessively make
work, much of it as of yet released. In 2004, a documentary about Bruce's life
and work, entitled Monster Road, was released to much acclaim.

More info on our site.

RSVP on Facebook and invite your friends!

PS. And if you are curious about what we have planned next, we will soon post
info about screenings of Bruce McClure, Nancy Andrews, and the Italian
documentary The Castle. Stay tuned!
