You can use an Elmo TRV-16, which has video out. Also a Tobin
TVT-16 which has video out. Both are standard definition and give a
nice image.
Some have S-VHS out, and some models just have composite out,
depending on the model.
As long as your video projector has Video in, or S-VHS in, these
would work for your application.

[Frameworks] DSLR for shooting video of 16mm?

2017-05-12 Thread k. a.r.
Hello all.

I want to transfer some 16mm films to video the inexpensive way; projecting on
the wall, and shooting with a camera.

Obviously, I need a slightly professional camera that will let me adjust the
shutter speed, and frame rate.

I was looking at the Canon EOS Rebel T6.

Has anyone used this camera for video? what do you think?

I want to spend under $500.

if no one said it yet, there is a program called "Play Back Pro" that runs on
mac
you can loop forever on it..
it's a professional level program that we use here in San Francisco for very
high profile corporate events.
It's pretty easy to use, but it is a little expensive.

You can also do loops with Quick Time and Windows media player, also.

hahaha oh wow.
I've been on this list since 96 or 97; in fact I got my first personal email
specifically to join it.

Jona, if you think this is bad, you have NO. IDEA. lol

Frameworks is quite tame these days, there have been some MASSIVE
disagreements, that went on and on for ever.
And many written by some quite verbose people. Lots and lots and LOTS of words
to make their point.

It's too bad that your whole experience lasted 2 hours, because it makes me
wonder about the attention span of youth.
Is it really that much of an instant gratification generation that you get in,
judge, and get out so quickly?
That is really interesting to me. Some things take more time. A lot more time.
I wonder what this world is changing into, and what the future will be like,
with such an impatient generation.
Curious.

Also, if you choose to focus on only the negative, that is what you get.
There are lots of posts, and honestly, I don't even notice that much negativity
these days.

Soyou get what you look for, I guess.
I truly appreciate this list as a place to go to for giving and taking of

Honestly, it's my fault. I was warned. I've heard from many sources, i.e. young
experimental filmmakers, that this listserv was a space of negativity, where
people were shamed and attacked over the most innocuous things.

Still, as a new filmmaker who draws inspiration from the traditions of
experimental and independent film, I figured I'd sign up. I figured it couldn't
be that bad, that I could surely draw inspiration from artists with a lifetime
of experience, and that it could enrich my practice and inspire me.

But, well, no. They were right, I was wrong.

And I'm not trying to clog my inbox with old grudges and hostility.

The writer Ben Marcus said: "Anyone who believes that you can make art from
language is part of a
small, nearly-vanishing community, and we should all form a wedge and
march on the enemy."

I think the basic sentiment applies to experimental film as well.

You should all maybe give this some thought.

[Frameworks] film storage/archival question

2015-07-24 Thread k. a.r.
hey there Frameworkers.
A while ago I put up the question about storage shelves for films.
I ended up building my own (super ugly) one, and planned to store the films on
the edge, standing up.
Someone had said to make sure they are all wound tightly and secured with tape
so they don't get loose on the reel and warp.
QUESTION: What kind of tape or other device can I use to keep the ends secure?
I've used paper tape, but after a few years it dries up and stops sticking.
Aside from every 5 years or so, retaping the entire collection, what else can I
do/use?
Any advice is helpful, thanks.

because you are going from one format to another, and they need a machine in

you are not changing the scan rate, correct, but you would be converting one
resolution to another, lower resolution.

You would go in 1080i (example) from the computer, and export it NTSC to your
VHS deck.

Scan converter is the simplified name of the device you would would use.

There is a professional piece of video production gear known as a scan
converter.
The correct scan converter for your needs will have analog outs to go into a
VHS deck.
This will give you a purer image than burn your video
onto DVD and then dub to a VHS cassette. DVDplayer - VCR

Scan converters come in a range of qualities and prices.
They can take different resolutions in, and modify them as they go out.
Some are simple with only presets, and some are very complex, with the ability
to manipulate the ingoing and outgoing signals.
They can be rented from A/V rental houses.
Buying would be pretty expensive.

Here's an example a good one that you could use.

It's relatively easy to get digital video onto VHS - you just need a
VCR and a composite or (S-Video) output on whatever digital player
you are using. The most straighforward setup (though not offering
the best quality before the video gets to VHS) is to burn your video
onto DVD and then dub to a VHS cassette. DVDplayer - VCR

Re: [Frameworks] Multi-channel video tech requirements

2015-07-11 Thread k. a.r.
Do you want the same image on all the monitors, or do you want a piece of the
image on each monitor to make all the monitors
show one whole image?

The 2 are different processes.

If you want the same image on multiple monitors, what you need depends on the
number of monitors.
There is a device called a D.A. which means Distribution Amplifier.
It is basically one input, and multiple outputs of the same image.
You can plug a computer into this, and then come out to your monitors.
You can get a D.A. in many flavors; DVI, VGA, HDMI.
Also they come in different number of monitors they can support 1x2, 1x4,
1x6 etc.

If you want one image to go to multiple monitors, to make all the monitors be a
part of one big image, then you need a splitter.
I've used a bunch of them, the only brand name I can remember off the top of my
head is Matrox.

Using both the DA and the Matrox, one computer will most definitely work.

There is a lot more I could say, but it would help if I knew if you wanted the
same on all the monitors, or different making one whole..

I do image splitting like this all the time in my corporate A/V job, if you
have any more questions, feel free to ask..

[Frameworks] San Francisco: Free Xenon 16mm projector....needs to go ASAP!

2015-06-03 Thread k. a.r.
Hi fellow frameworkers...
So my landlord is a jerk. Welcome to San Francisco...
I've had this giant Xenon 16mm projector stored in the basement for 10 years,
but all of a sudden its a problem he wants to throw in the garbage.

Come get it! Someone should be using it anyway, instead of it sitting down
there

Details: It's a JAN projector body, with a Cinemechanica ? (Italian) Xenon
bulb housing built into the projector.
It sits on it's own metal pedastal, which is like a storage cabinet.
It has a Christie power supply.
It plugs in with a regular plug, no special outlet needed.
I was told it works, I have never tried it out. (No outlets in the basement)
It also comes with miscellaneous accessories and very detailed maintainance
records from when it was at Berkely.
I can email a pic if you want to see it.

It's history: It came out of a building in UC Berkely, and after it retired
from academia, it went on tour with George Clinton
and Parliment/Funkadelic for a while. How disappointing for it to have been
locked in my basement for all this time! ;)

Come and get it!
Free to the first person who can make it over.
You will need a vehicle.
I need it gone ASAP, by Friday would be ideal!

So come get a FREE projector! let me know if you are interested.

thanks in advance.

Re: [Frameworks] screen paint?

2015-05-05 Thread k. a.r.
I've found all the 'screen paints' sold are extremely expensive, and
unnecessary? maybe.

I project video in my house, and the wall is just painted a flat matte white;
regular indoor wall paint.
I didn't want to use any paint w gloss, because I didn't want it to be
reflective.

If you can paint the non projection walls a dark color to absorb light, that
makes it better.
Honestly, for just having flat white matte paint the projection in my house
looks awesome.
Do a google search for installing home theaters, there are all sorts of things
written about using fancy paint, and using regular paint.
Have fun!

 Dear,
to project 16mm film and slides on the wall, what paint should I use?
There's a bunch of special paints for home cinema's with digital beamers,
 with all kinds of reviews.
Where to start? Anything I should know before?

They offer a free 30-day trial, no ads, full screen. It’s very simple to set up
and use.
But read over their TOS to make sure you’re OK with it.

[Frameworks] Any ideas for 16mm film can storage that's not just piles around the house?

2015-02-16 Thread k. a.r.
Hi there list!

If anybody wants to PM me pictures of their film storage solutions I would love
to see it!
What is your preference for storing the cans, flat in stacks, or on their edge?
Does it make a difference?

I have about 500 16mm films, and I want to build a free standing rolling shelf
for my living room.
I want it to be long and low; it will go below my projection screen.
Any ideas on if there is something like this out there?
I can make it myself, but not sure about how to make it really strong, due to
the weight of films.
And since it will be in my living room, it should look kind of nice.

Any input you guys have I would appreciate.

thanks
Kristie

[Frameworks] SF Opera selling off stage projectors!!!!!!!

2014-08-19 Thread k. a.r.
Hey fellow listservers
I'm passing this info on to you, with permission, to all because I think some
people here might be interested in the
artistic possibilities here these are giant slide projectors. Google
them, they're pretty cool
and most definitely very high end. Probably cost a lot new
Anyway, here is the original copy, contact the seller at the email below.
Thanks!

'Hello folks, I have an interesting, possibly humorous inquiry for you all.

The SF Opera, due to decreasing storage options, is liquidating a large
portion of it's Pani projection equipment. The list includes projectors
(BP-2s, BP-4s, BP-5s), effects of all types, accessories of all types,
lenses, power supplies, cables, etc.
If you or anyone you know or
have dealt with in our biz is interested in picking up some still very
useable, old-school projection equipment at VERY LOW prices, please forward
them my email so we can work something out.

We also have a nice Strand 550 console, SN100 node, and two SN102 nodes
that are gathering dust but still operable. Stop laughing, I'm serious.
Might be good for a small house or school. I don't know, seems a shame
to just dispose of it. Who knows.

Re: [Frameworks] Projector recommendations for large scale installations?

2014-03-03 Thread k. a.r.
I was asked off list why you don't want to put a video projector on a power
strip, here's why.

you should never put a projector on a power strip for a few reasons:

The main reason being that projectors tend to draw a lot of power and power
strips have a breaker.
So say you're live and your shows going along nicely, then BAM! the projector
unexpectedly goes dark because
it tripped the breaker.
(Even
if your using a little projector that doesn't draw much juice, you
don't know that the power strip is functioning properly.
It could blow easily.) Power strips are unpredictable.

When
a projector slams off like that,(with out going through its normal cool
down process) it takes a while to be able to power up again.
If you have your projector hung, or in the rafters or something, and the power
strip blows, now you have to climb
up to where ever the projector is to reset it.

All things that you do not want to happen while you are live.

Plus, in this day and age where everybody needs to plug in their phone all the
time, you have a power strip
out there (depending where it is) just tempting people to use it.
These people will draw more juice, helping to maybe blow the fuse, plus they
giggle cords and I've even seen people unplug
cables to plug their own stuff in.

Also
when you plug in your projector, make sure you use a good industrial
strength extension cord, not one of those thin gauge home extension
cords.
Projectors will make those melt.

It's all a bunch of maybes, but these are all things that I have seen happen in
live...

if you're buying, don't forget there will be additional costs.
...Cables to connect your source to the projector, maybe long ones depending on
where you have mission control in relation to the projectors.
Do you want three different images from three different sources?
Or are you doing an extended desktop on your computer, or using some image
mapping software?
You might need a D.A. (distribution amplifier) Protip: The DA will also provide
a signal boost if you have 100' cables..
...Extension cords for every thing, because you can't (well you can but really
shouldnt) put a projector on a power strip.
for example.
Let us know what you end up doing!

 Nik:

IMHO, you do NOT want a single-chip DLP projector. The color will be washed
out, and, worse, you'll get annoying momentary moire patterns at points where
there are sharp changes in luminance (due to the rotating color wheel). For
your budget, you'll probably want to go with a 3-chip LCD model. I made an
inquiry to the list not too long ago about projectors in this price range,
and received several recommendations for Epson (and none for competing
models). Investigating online, I discovered that Epson has two separate
product lines: one defined as 'home cinema' the other as 'presentation.' The
later were somewhat less expensive, and, on paper anyway, had similar specs
and technology to the pricier 'home cinema' models. So I bought one of these:

 http://www.visualapex.com/Epson/Projector-Specifications.asp?For-The=VS335W

Especially for the price, I'm quite content with it so far. Color is good.
You don't get very deep blacks, but that's par for the course with affordable
video projection AFAIK. The 'presentation' models are 1280x768 native, so
when you screen 720P HD there are thin little 24 pixel letterbox bars on the
top and bottom. The 'home' models are 1280x720, so an HD image fills the
frame to the edges. You're not going to make 1080P on your budget, but I
wouldn't worry about it. The 720P looks good enough.

VisualApex had the cheapest price I could find, but they apparently don't
keep these things in stock, instead taking your payment and having Epson ship
directly. I received the projector exactly a week after I ordered it. Email
communication from the vendor was very good, and they even sent out a nice
follow-up email to see if everything was AOK with the transaction.

One thing that may or may not be an issue for your installation: all of these
projectors have pretty wide lenses and thus a relatively short throw...

Re: [Frameworks] Travel Tripods

2013-07-18 Thread k. a.r.
Hi there. When I go on my documentary shoots to Mexico, I always just use a
cheapo tripod.
(I use a video camera that is slightly lighter than a bolex, but about the same
size)
I get the tripods on ebay for 25-30$.
The cons:
- they are not good for much more than a static shot, the panning and tilted
are not acceptable
for when you are recording/live.
- they are pretty cheaply made, and usually bits start falling off of them
before the trip is over, although they still function
- buy it well in advance that you have time to check it out, and make sure it
will do what you need. I had one that was impossible to get level and that was
a lot of fun.. not

The pros:
- it's a 25$ tripod.
-it's lightweight and small, easily fits in the the suitcase.
- for me, shooting in a third world country, I dont want to be going around
showing off that I have good quality, expensive gear.
It looks like garbage, and that's fine with me!
 - If it gets stolen, it's a 25$ tripod...

Good luck!

Re: [Frameworks] 16mm graflex / singer / telex projectors

2013-05-06 Thread k. a.r.
I have easily owned 50+ projectors over the years, and have had a coupleathree
of these go through my collection.
(I think I have one sitting unused in my basement right now, actually.)

I never used them for very long.
The threading is complicated, and hard to get out mid-reel, ( i.e. if the film
breaks or jams.)
The ones I've had have never been able to run film backwards, (making them
unusable to me.)

If you're going to use them, here's a tip:
If you take off the back cover, there is a fuse inside there that sometimes
needs to be reset.
If it stops working for no reason, check this fuse.
(it's just a few screws, nothing complicated).

my 2¢ worth :)

[Frameworks] what to do with all my old film stuff??????

2013-02-11 Thread k. a.r.

Hello, List.
I saved every single frame of outtakes and everything I ever shot.
Now it's 20+ years after I started in film, and I still have all of it.
It takes up a lot of space, and I'm pretty sure that I'm done working in 16mm.
So what do I do with all the 16mm film stuff I have? There is both my personal
stuff, but also a lot of peripherals, like editing supplies.
I don't know what to do with it, but I'm ready to clean house.
Ideas?
thanks in advance.

Re: [Frameworks] what to do with all my old film stuff??????

2013-02-11 Thread k. a.r.

I'm not going to be giving my personal footage to anyone.
I posted
this topic because I don't know what to do with it, and I'm curious what
other filmmakers have done with their old footage and miscellanae.
Thanks.

Ship it all to me:

I'm only interested in the out-takes. But I'll take the rest, too, after you
transfer it all. It doesn't matter what it looks like. Don't think about it,
just ship it.

[Frameworks] homemade video copies of 16mm

2012-06-22 Thread k. a.r.

I've been using a Sony A1U
shooting in 1080i.

I have a transfer box that is pretty good, (it's just a mirror and a lens
basically)

The thing that sucks is that I can't get it to be strobe free without using the
video camera at the '15' shutter speed.
This looks weird when there is a lot of action in the 16mm film.

I am using a basic bell and howell blue school projector.

Any ideas on how to record a better image with this gear?
thanks in advance.

Re: [Frameworks] homemade video copies of 16mm

2012-06-22 Thread k. a.r.

haha Thanks, but the reason I bought the Sony was because I am working on a
documentary, and that is the same camera
that my documentary partner has, sooo.until we finish shooting that I can't
get rid of this Sony.

What would be a make and model of a five blade projector I could maybe look for?

thanks for your advice...

You need a 5 blade projector if you're shooting 29.97.

You can use a standard projector if your camera will shoot 24fps.

Sell the Sony, and buy a used Canon XG-A1.

Re: [Frameworks] Hand-cranking 16mm projector?

2012-06-13 Thread k. a.r.

I have an ancient film projector that is hand cranked.
It's a Bell Howell Filmo, and the thing has to be 90-100 years old.
The only thing electric on it is the bulb

So, they're out there

Crazy how disposable it is now, when it used to be so precious and hard to

Re: [Frameworks] Robert Nelson

2012-01-10 Thread k. a.r.

Bob was one of the most inspiring and influential people I have ever known.
I was in the last classes he taught at UWMilwaukee before retiring, and I saw
him
over the years here and there in the bay area.
I programmed his films, and enjoyed hanging out with him.
He was truly one of a kind.
A great artist, and a great person.
Always kind, and always willing to talk and give advice, about film or life.
RIP Bob, you are missed.
Godspeed.

That is sad. I am so sad to hear of this. What a loss. He was certainly an
inspiration and an enormous presence in the scene back when I first got into
film mid 60s in the Bay Area. I was there when these films came out, he would
be at the screeningsoh the memories.Myron Ort

very sad I am to report that Robert Nelson has died. He was 81. He had been
diagnosed with terminal cancer about a year ago, and had decided to not receive
treatment, to go out in his own way, as he could only do, as Chick Strand had
decided to do before him. All things considered, Bob was doing pretty well
all year, actually. He had moments, sometimes days, of fatigue and feeling
kind of lousy, but had plenty of good days too. I last spoke to him about a
week ago and we talked about meeting up soon. He sounded great, and was as
sharp as ever. So when I got the call from Wiley today, the news was a bit of
a shock to me, as Bob had still seemed so vital and alive a week before. He
hadn’t been taking any medication or treatment beyond the herbal kind, and had
continued to live on his own in the mountains in the small house he built in
gorgeous Mendocino County. An inimitably homespun and offhand philosopher, he
would say things to me like, “what the hell, I’ve had a good run.” I made him
some CDs to check out a few months ago, and after he’d listened to and enjoyed
them a few times he unexpectedly sent them back, saying “they were really good,
I just don’t want to accumulate any more shit.” Bob has easily been one of
the most important people in my life, a massive source of influence,
inspiration, support, friendship, and good company for the past ten years. His
films are still huge for me. and will be til I die. I sought him out in
2001 when I worked at Canyon Cinema. I had seen Bleu Shut and Hot Leatherette,
and they had both knocked me out, especially Bleu Shut. At the time, my friend
Martha was a preservationist at the Academy Film Archive in L.A., and she and I
concocted a proposal for Bob and the Academy to start getting his filmography
preserved, film by film. After he answered my initial letter, Bob and I had
exchanged a few more letters (he was a great letter-writer) without yet
meeting. One day without warning, he just strolled into the Canyon office on
Third. Dominic hadn’t seen him in a few years at least, and said, almost in
shock, “…Well hi, Bob!” Bob and I met, had lunch and talked about the
archiving thing, and a deal was hatched. He was still very skeptical about the
value of his work and his own desire for people to even see the films, but a
project at the Academy was worked out, and Martha preserved The Off-Handed Jape
and Deep Westurn right away, with Bob still not really wanting the films to see
the light of day. I took over when I was hired to replace her in ’03, when she
left to work in Tanzania, and have worked on a bunch of ‘em since then.
Over the years, a certain visceral block about his films, a desire to destroy
many of them or at least keep them withdrawn from view, loosened and relented,
in some cases title by title. I worked on him to do screenings, and though he
wouldn’t initially appear in person, he approved the occasional showing of
individual films starting in late 2003. In 2004, with Craig Baldwin’s help, we
were able to do a 3-day retrospective at Other Cinema, with Bob in person,
which marked a big change in his attitude about the work. The voluminous
positive feedback from audiences I was able to pass on encouraged him more and
more to lighten up about it all. He started making appearances, including some
brilliant ones at Oberhausen, Vienna, and elsewhere. He even started working
on several new films (left uncompleted) in 2007 or so, one of which was a
collaboration we discussed at length, and which I hope I can actually complete
now. I was always thrilled to pass word along to him about how much one or
more of his films had influenced someone I’d met, because by the 1990s, he had
gotten

[Frameworks] traveling with a light kit on an international flight?

2011-11-02 Thread k. a.r.

Hi everyone.
So in about 3 weeks I am flying to Mexico to shoot on two documentary projects.

I will be bringing a light kit, one that has some high intensity compact
florescent bulbs.
(you know, the curly looking ones that everyone thinks are so green)

Anyway, I'll be flying on a commercial airline, and i was wondering if the
unpressurized luggage compartment
is good or bad for bulbs.

Any advice or experience with this?

Should I remove the bulbs and take them in my hand luggage, or will they be
fine?

Any advice about traveling with gear greatly appreciated.

thanks in advance...

sincerely,
Kristie

I live across the street form George's place here in SF, and there was a small

Frameworkers,
I was in daily contact with George by phone, working with him on my book
about his diaries until two days before he went into a coma. It will not
surprise you to know that his amazing spirit remained strong to the end, joking
with the hospice staff and sharing poignant reflections on his life and
work. This is an enormous loss. He was a true original. We'll miss him
dearly, and the laughter and joy he brought into our lives for so many years.
His love of life was an inspiration to everyone around him. My heart goes
out to Mike.

And we've lost Jordan Belson too. The clock of our generation ticks
inexorably on...
