I'm in the same boat as you. I just finished installing video4bsd + webcamd + skype, and skype isn't able to detect the webcam, while pwcview works fine. MAC and JAILS
Hey all, I'm trying to implement MAC within jails. however any attempt to do this from directly within the jail results in "Operation not Permitted" messages. With that, I assume root within the jail doesn't have any capabliities of defining his own policies. Can anyone confirm (or deny) this? With that said, access to dev entries within jail are/can be controlled by devfs rules. The configuration for your rules is "administrator dependant". More specifically, you should find a line in your rc.conf that looks similar to the following: jail_devfs_ruleset="devfsrules_jail" This defines the ruleset used for your jails. (i.e. updating vtund configs) The disk-on-module is spot on and that's what I'll probably use: $14 bucks for 128 Megs w/ NanoBSD I believe is goingn to suffice nicely. NanoBSD :: smallest image size
Hello list, I have an old machine I just acquired that I was thinking of replacing my current FreeBSD firewall/router with. It's a Celeron 500+ Mhz machine with 32 Megs of ram, and a 10G hard drive. I am(was) initially thinking about taking out the 10G, and using the flobby disk drive to boot off of. I was familiar with PicoBSD years ago and know I could use that, but it seems that project has been discontinued. After looking through archives to determine what to do, I can across nanoBSD as that seems to be included in the FreeBSD system by default, henceforth this question. I couldn't find any information regarding the smallest image size possible using NanoBSD. So the question is: can nanoBSD fw/ the proper configurations fit onto a floppy disk...and if not, is such an old computer bootable off of a usb stick? How can I tell without buying one? I get a total system freeze when I start the X server. Here are the details of what I have done: 1) install x11/nvidia-driver 2) add nvidia_load="YES" to /boot/loader.conf 3) modify /etc/X11/xorg.conf by substituting "nvidia" to "nv" in the Driver line. At this point (after rebooting), if I start the X server with startx, I get a black screen and the system *completely* hangs (neither ctrl-alt-backspace, nor even ctrl-alt-delete work). The only way to get back the system is to power it off and on (which corrupts the filesystem because it has not been properly dismounted). I also looked at the xorg log file in: /var/log/Xorg.0.log Interestingly it seems to detect the card as a GeForce 9500 GT rather than a 8500 GT (which makes me wonder whether I got the right info from the vendor receipt): (--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device (--) Chipset GeForce 9500 GT found But this should not be an issue because in the same log file it says that both GeForce 8500 GT and GeForce 9500 GT are supported by the "nv" driver. Having been an administrator now for mail servers in general for nearly 15 years, with experience with most notable mailers, Qmail by far lends itself to be the most highly configurable mailer assuming you know what you want ahead of time. Most experienced sysadmins, once they know what they want, can apply those patches to qmail with ease and roll out additional Qmail installations with a single package. Very easy indeed. However, in an attempt to remain as unbiased as possible (too late I realize) and just to reiterate, Qmail even though I believe it is a wonderful piece of software, you definately need to know what you are doing. Postfix, exim, etc., take a lot of guess work away from the administrator by making assumptions that qmail doesn't make. Some claim that this makes these packages better. For this reason, especially if you aren't familiar with any mailer, I would suggest something other than Qmail. Note the items listed within *'s are custom programs and explained later in this document: tcpserver->qmail-smtpd->qmail-qfilter->spamc->*reject_spam*->qmail-queue->qmail-remote **Note :: reject_spam is included because that is needed for denying emails. (You could rewrite it in perl or sh if you needed to) Installation The installation for any new and existing proxy boxes is extremely straightforward. For all but qmail listed above, use the ports tree. Setup spamd to create the /tmp/.spamd.sock socket. That's what I call mine, yours can/will vary. Once all this is installed, create /etc/tcp.smtp with the following entry and build the cdb file: :+RELAYCLIENT=+QMAILQUEUE=/var/qmail/bin/qmail-queue-spam Ensure tcpserver uses that file(i.e. -x) While in /usr/ports/qmail. a) upload the attached files (patch-qmail.c and patch-Makefile) into ./files/ b) edit patch-qmail.c to reflect a message you would like to give. Problem with Nat (port forwarding)
Hey all, I've been spending hours trying to figure out why my machine at the office (Linux), cannot connect to my FreeBSD (6.1) machine behind my nat'ed gateway. This was working fine previously before my linksys router decided to take a nose dive, so I am sure the Linux box that is attempting to establish the connection is configured fine. When the router crapped out, I decided to put all that old hardware I wasn't using for anything to good use. What I ended up with is a Pentium 3 200mhz machine with several network interfaces conncted to my internet provider (BellSouth). In order to continue working from home, it's necessary that I get this tunnel up and running, and for the life of me, I can't seem to figure out what exactly I'm doing wrong. In addition rule number 00301 triggers appropriately when a packet destined for port 5000 is inbound. /var/log/security makes no mention of anything being denied by this firewall ruleset destined for or originating from port 5000 by any host. This is certainly the case, as the host where vtund is running is recieving packets from the gateway on port 5000 (info showing this follows). I also see the vtund box responding to the inbound packets, but it never creates the tunnel device as it should, and nothing gets logged. mfs_root booting problems
Hey all, I've been having a problem that hopefully someone would be able to help me with. I've been trying to boot FreeBSD via PXE for at least a couple of days now with no luck. I've read several online guides none of which explain using a root mfs to accomplish this task. Most of the manuals I've read go over mounting / as NFS which isn't ideal for me. I've got mostly everything working *up to* the point where the system begins bootstrapping. It loads the kernel, loads the mfs root and then the machine immediately reboots. For the life of me, I can't figure out why. I was hoping that someone has a documented method for initializing a FreeBSD system via PXE and without the use of NFS for the root filesystem. I believe it's also worth mentioning, that if I use the mfsroot that comes with the installer, it loads/run fine. Not sure if this helps any or not. What could I possibly be missing?
