EsperNET IRC
Greetings! I've noticed that a group has initiated an IRC support channel on freenode for FreeBSD. I would like to extend the courtesy of starting one on irc.esper.net, which is growing on a rather nice incline. I currently have it registered, but would like to extend the invitation to expand your support energy to a growing IRC server that already has quite a few FreeBSD guru's looking for a place to meet, most of which I come in contact with daily. My nickname on irc.esper.net (6667) is azuplink, and I am usually in #FreeBSD and #hackermind channels on the server. Please stop in sometime! Nicknames and rooms should able to be registered. You can use EFNet/dalnet's ircd, check in /usr/ports/irc or packages/irc. if you dont need nick-registrations ircu will probaly work better, you can install GNUWorld with web-interface and get "Undernet's X". If you host the domain yourself(DNS) and using BIND you can add to zone-file: irc IN A your.ip.address or irc IN CNAME your.hostname. It's what I run on my network currently, and it's been great stability wise. It has some extra features such as spamfilters, halfop status, and other bells and whistles. There are a few features when dealing with multiple servers that I personally wish it had, but I don't know of any other one that has 100% of everything I need so it's probably the best choice for me now. Another nice one is FreeNode's Hyperion. It has a vary different config file syntax than Unreal (maybe a bit more difficult) but it's also a nice IRCD. It's not in ports, but the site is here: http://freenode.net/hyperion.shtml I'd say try a few and see which ones you like best. Another one to try might be IRCu, although I have not played with that one in a couple years. If you need services, I like Anope (it's in ports). -Mark -- GnuPG Public Key: http://www.mkproductions.org/mk_pubkey.asc Internet Radio: Party107 (Trance/Electronic) - http://www.party107.com Rock 101.9 The Edge (Rock) - http://www.rock1019.net IRC: MIXXnet IRC Network - irc.mixxnet.net (Nick: MIXX941) signature.asc Description: PGP signature signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

If you are into Emacs, there are a few clients that run inside Emacs, both in GUI/X11 frames and console sessions. One of the major features of ERC (one of these clients) is that small customizations and extensions are *very* easy to hack when you know a bit of Emacs Lisp already. Here are for example some of the local customizations I made to my local setup: http://bitbucket.org/keramida/dot-emacs/src/tip/elisp/keramida-erc.el#cl-116 A small function that autojoins channels after Freenode's NickServ has had a chance to cloak user information. http://bitbucket.org/keramida/dot-emacs/src/tip/elisp/keramida-erc.el#cl-177 http://bitbucket.org/keramida/dot-emacs/src/tip/elisp/keramida-erc.el#cl-183 http://bitbucket.org/keramida/dot-emacs/src/tip/elisp/keramida-erc.el#cl-189 Shorthand aliases for /cs -> /chanserv, /ns -> /nickserv and /ms -> /memoserv. My setup is a bit `unusual' for those who like holistic approaches to the desktop, like GNOME and KDE, but I use GNU Emacs for email, news and IRC (sometimes for web browsing too). Gnus, running inside a separate Emacs instance, is a very good email & news reader. It supports MIME, PGP encryption, email filtering and archival; it can connect through POP or IMAP; it supports authentication methods like POP+SSL; it can read email from Unix mailboxes, MH-folders, or Maildirs; it can fetch & cache email from multiple sources; it can score Usenet messages with customizable rules, so you only have to read what you prefer instead of everything, and so on... The feature list is just too huge to include here. The ERC module (included in the latest Emacs 22.X releases) is a quite flexible and nice IRC client. It integrates well with the rest of Emacs, so you get the full power of a magnificent editor in all your IRC windows; it can connect to multiple servers; it can use Bitlbee as a back-end for instant messaging; but most importantly it can be tuned, customized and extended right there from within Emacs, like any other Emacs Lisp application. If you have used GNU Emacs and you feel comfortable working with it, these two (Gnus and ERC) can probably be a very useful and powerful combo. More information about them (and many other Emacs modules) is available online at the Emacs Wiki: http://www.emacswiki.org/CategoryGnus http://www.emacswiki.org/ERC These two aren't exactly XFCE-specific, but I consider this a huge advantage, instead of a short-coming :-) ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

Becuase i did not find it ? By default, screen translates terminal bells into messages which are displayed at the bottom of the screen. The bad thing about this is that it dismisses such messages as soon as you hit a key. What this means is that if you're typing away at a document of some sort and someone mentions your nick on IRC, you may not notice. Using ^A-G (default keybindings) will make the bell audible, so that you'll be able to hear it. Whether your terminal emulation program that you use to log into the system translates it into something visual is another matter. If you want to always use this setting but you don't want to have to hit ^A-G every time you start screen, put this in a file named ~/.screenrc: vbell off And you'll never see that annoying visual bell ever again. Does anyone know if the irc/inspircd port for FreeBSD works?I have tried it on an FBSD 9 server, as well as an older version of the FreeBSD with the same results. If I try and run make the build the port, I get the following error: # make ===> Building for inspircd-2.0.5 make: cannot open BSDmakefile. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/irc/inspircd. *** Error code 1 Stop in /usr/ports/irc/inspircd. # I figure maybe someone has gotten this to build, so figured I would toss it out here as using my googlefu I found years ago someone posting the same problem, but never found any resolution. RE: Can't get irc/inspircd to build, any clues?
I just took a look and granted I was on version 2.0.5 (I am also on amd64, so not x86) and there is no /usr/ports/irc/inspircd/work/InspIRCd-2.0.2/BSDmakefile present at that path. So I then went to the inspircd.org site and downloaded both the 2.0.5 and 2.0.2 archives, and again I see no BSDmakefile. Is there some command that is called, or something performed that creates this BSDmakefile?? I don't see any FreeBSD sources on their download page, https://github.com/inspircd/inspircd/downloads. I think it's the usual Linux source packages (haven't looked in detail, I admit). > Is there some command that is called, or something performed that creates > this BSDmakefile?? If so, maybe on amd64 this isn't working. Erm... just to get that right: You are _not_ using the sources obtained via ports collection, instead you try to compile Linux source code? That won't work. FreeBSD != Linux. Linux sources typically don't compile. That's why applications need to be ported, that's what is in the ports collection. You should _never_ need to download stuff from the web. First check your /usr/ports/irc/inspircd/Makefile. It should indicate version 2.0.5. Then do # make clean to make sure there's nothing "unusual" left. Then go step by step. First check if the sources will be obtained correctly: # make fetch Then extract the sources: # make extract The sources will also be checked for a checksum match, this makes sure the obtained sources are good. The file /usr/ports/irc/inspircd/work/InspIRCd-2.0.5/BSDmakefile should now be present. As a next step, set your options: # make config And if this has worked, you can actually start to build from that sources: # make If done, install it: # make install By the way, using a port management tool would have the same effect, it's just more comfortable, but offers less "step by step diagnostics". A command like # portmaster irc/inspircd would install from source. Note that the port management tool would call all the required steps automatically. I suggested the "step by step" method only to see where the problem occurs (because there are more than one point that can go wrong). If everything fails, just try to install from a precompiled binary package: # pkg_add -r inspircd Maybe such a package is present (haven't checked). I hope I didn't misunderstand you, but allow me to repeat: You cannot use Linux sources with the ports collection. The ports collection has automated fetching, extracting, configuring and building mechanisms. You should use them. -- Polytropon Magdeburg, Germany Happy FreeBSD user since 4.0 Andra moi ennepe, Mousa, ... ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
Re: Can't get irc/inspircd to build, any clues?
I'm currently the maintainer and it works on the machines I run it on. I also pushed it through redports to prove it can compile on 7.4, 8.x, 9, CLANG, etc. It looks like BSDMakefile is generated during the build process. I'm guessing something on your system is screwed up if it can't generate it. Things to try: -delete /usr/src -delete /var/db/sub/ports-all -re-fetch ports via csup -install sysutils/bsdadminscripts, run pkg_libchk and fix any issues there -try building again -perhaps its an issue with your shell? have any strange aliases or configuration? ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"

[off-topic] Server-side IRC channel logging? (not statistics)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I recently set up an IRC server (irc/ircd-hybrid), which I don't see obvious settings for finely tuned channel logging. What I would like to do is log individual channels without depending on a connected client. In all my searching I found software that either: 1.) depends on a 100% connected client, but provides concise logging of channel activity; 2.) logs statistics, rather than the useful information I am trying to obtain such as, who pastes the most links, who 'smiley's the most, etc. My interest is in the useful information in the channel, not statistics; ultimately, I want to have the channel conversations archived. I'd like to do this on the server itself. For example, in the event I have to reboot my machine or the disk dies, or whatever bad event, I don't want to concern myself with missed data, corrupt logs, or a disconnected client, so I would like this to run unprivileged and without an interactive shell. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd be happy to hear them before I go reinventing the wheel. Othr than using GAIM and ymessenger, the last time I did live chat was circa 1991 with the write utility. So beyond that, I'm clueless. I use hybrid (http://ircd-hybrid.com/) for the ircd - I chose that for its reputed stability. Hybrid's not the most featureful ircd out there, but it's been great to me. I added on hybserv (http://www.hybserv.net/) for services. For the web front-end part, I've tried several, from java clients to a cgi gateway. pjirc (http://www.pjirc.com/about.php) is a very sweet java applet. It's free, slick looking, very configurable (on the back/admin end) and very featureful as java clients go. Some limitations of java clients is that your clients need network access to the irc server (some sites/networks/companies/etc. block irc access) and you need java (which not all browsers/OSes support). That's why I also offer a cgi-to-irc (http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/) gateway. It's a bit clunky, but it allows people who can't use the java client (for one of the above reasons) to still connect to irc via the web. /-/ Who made the world I cannot tell; 'Tis made, and here am I in hell. If you put a client on the server, then if the server goes down, the client goes down anyway, but if the server goes up and you make a file in /etc/rc.d/ then the client also goes up. You can have "near" continual monitoring, assuming you have a stable client and you're not concerned about those seconds when the server comes up. If you want it done on the irc server you'll have to find a irc server that can handle it. But there's plenty of irc bots out there that can probably do everything you want it too and if it's installed on the server hardware you'll have as good a reliability as the server itself, as long as the logging is good. If the disk dies, data dies, that's just the way of life. You could mitigate that, but it's always a possibility. ___ freebsd-questions@freebsd.org mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "freebsd-questions-unsubscr...@freebsd.org"
