KBC-2 works even better for my test PC, the beep sound gone and the

>(the archive in your site don't have version info, a bit confuse)

Most of my work is test versions of a particular feature which changes frequently. As
a consequence they don't tick up the version counter for official releases which go
out on the FreeDOS full distribution -- I specify dates for the files as it seems to
work as well for identifying them in testing for what to grab and what one is using.

The one counterexample would be the VCPI support on EMM386. Many people have been
requesting VCPI support from of me or others before/besides -- even posting on the
official FreeDOS buglist -- as a major requested feature. So, with the later VCPI
releases I did a more general "world-wide" release announcement on freedos-users
besides here, plus it was posted to FreeDOS announcements. That release I probably
should have incremented and newly identified the version in some fashion, but I was
used to running test versions and didn't.

This has reminded me to check in and see whether to bump version on EMM386+VCPI final
release since it will be a full announcement including on users. I'll do that.

[Freedos-devel] New test HIMEM64

2004-04-06 Thread Michael Devore
Uploaded to ftp://ftp.devoresoftware.com/downloads/ are the files HIMEM64.ZIP and
HIMEM64S.ZIP holding, respectively, an uncompressed test version HIMEM64.EXE and the
modified ASM source from last release HIMEM64, dated April 6, 2004.

The version of HIMEM64 modifies the order of the A20 method (printed at startup) from
BIOS ->  fast -> KBC -> KBC2 -> PS/2 -> Always -> Fail/None, reversing the KBC methods
so that KBC2 is tried before KBC. This is because some early 386's will pass the KBC
test, only to fail it later on and lock the keyboard. The KBC2 routine itself has
been modified slightly to work with these early 386 machines.

If your version of HIMEM64 uses the KBC or KBC-2 method, please test this version. I
need to ensure that (1) reversing the KBC/KBC-2 test order doesn't mess up existing
machines using KBC and (2) the KBC-2 changes work for those who use KBC-2. If your
HIMEM uses BIOS, fast, or PS/2 method, you need not test this change as it does not
affect you.

Please let me know of any problems you may encounter or questions you may have.
Thanks.

[Freedos-devel] Announce: Keyboard Layouts for KEYB v2.0

2004-04-06 Thread Henrique Peron
Hi all,

this is to announce the first keyboard layout pack for KEYB v2.0.

It is called KPDOS, because all keyboard layouts were encoded based on the
DOS codepages available at CPIDOS.
(I'll start working on KPWIN).

The source and the executable files can be found at
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/keyb/kblayout/

Have a nice day,
Henrique

[Freedos-devel] Announce: new CPI-file (codepage) packs

2004-04-06 Thread Henrique Peron
Hi all,

this is to announce a new version of the CPI-file pack for FreeDOS - which
was called simply "CPI" and is now called CPIDOS - and still contains
DOS-based codepages only, such as cp437, cp850 and cp858 (= cp850 with Euro
sign).

The enhancements affect parcularly EGA5, EGA6 and EGA7.CPI files, as well as
the respective updates on documentation.

EGA5 contains, as before, greek codepages as well as cp850 and cp858 for the
primary (latin) layouts of greek keyboards.
cp111 has been removed; cp737 provides all the greek letters available on
that CP (and precisely on the same positions) and includes capital accented
letters. Therefore, EGA5 is now a little smaller, saving space for other
greek codepages which I might need to include in the future.

EGA6 contains, as before, armenian and georgian codepages and an old
yugoslavian codepage (cp113); now it includes cp858 for the primary layouts
of armenian and georgian keyboards. It makes it easier for owners of those
keyboards, so that they find all CPs they need into a single CPI file.

EGA7 contains, as before, non-slavic cyrillic codepages; now it includes
cp858 for the same reason it was included on EGA6.

I also introduce CPI-file packs based on other platforms: Windows (CPIWIN),
ISO (CPIISO), KOI (CPIKOI), Mac (CPIMAC) and a pack called "CPIMSC", which
contains codepages from HP, DEC and NextSTEP platforms.

The packs can be found at
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/cpi/

Have a nice day,
Henrique

[Freedos-devel] OT: Virus collection

2004-04-06 Thread Eric Auer

Hi, excuse the OT, but maybe you find some interesting pattern in my
collected virus logs (mails trapped by the campus virus filter -> an
informational mail is sent to me instead of the virus -> I used some
Linux textutils and the joe editor to improve the layout...):

http://www.coli.uni-sb.de/~eric/stuff/virus/ virus-collection.txt

All at signs are removed from the list. If you still think that it is
too spam-dangerous, let me know and I take it offline again as soon as
possible. As you can see, NetSky T is very much in trend today X-).
List is sorted chronologically. The really stupid thing about the AntiVir
gateway is that I cannot tell what the sender IP is. SOME FreeDOS fan is
obviously infected, but which? Happy scanning. http://www.ClamAV.net/ can
always use more testers, hint hint...!

Eric.

PS: Important - the mentioned mail addresses are NOT the actual sender
addresses. They are only addresses which are stored somewhere on the PCs
of the actually infected persons, randomly selected as fake sender addresses
by the mentioned worms / viruses.

I haven't uploaded the modified HIMEM64 source and EXE yet, since I wanted to clean it
up and re-test with original user. Basically what happens is that the KBC2 test will
now occur before the KBC test, and the KBC2 test code has been regressed and slightly
modified to match known working code for old 386 machines.

Since KBC2 test will now occur before KBC, and since KBC2 code changed, people who use
either or both KBC2 and KBC are needed to make sure it all still works for them. I'll
try to get a revised HIMEM64 upload on the site sometime in next 12-24 hours for

I also have to put up the EMM386 with VCPI support final release in the next day or
