giving a list of which fonts can be found in which CPX or CPI file?



There are four TXT files in the CPIDOS package with plenty of

Hi Paul,

CP437 is very weak. It only covers german, swedish and finnish. It is 
only a "copy" of the table of characters available on those old CGA 
cards.All the rest on that codepage covers linedraw, block, shade, 
logical/mathematical, currency characters and a few greek letters (for 
mathematical purposes). Yes, it does provide "Ç/ç", "Ñ/ñ", "É/é" and 
"Æ/æ"... which are letters used on languages that require other 
upper-/lowercase accented letters and a few other lowercase-only 
accented letters, but you won't be able to perfectly type any language 
that way.

On those days, there were alternate versions of cp437 for other 
languages --- perhaps they were also "copies" of tables of characters 
hardcoded into CGA cards sold on particular markets: cp860 for 
portuguese, cp854 for spanish (which I know to exist but I didn't find 
an image of it yet), and many others.

Then, we had the multilingual codepages: cp850 for western Europe, cp852 
for central Europe, cp855 for eastern Europe and a few others.

There's a catch here: MS-DOS only provided cp850 for western Europe; 
IBM-DOS also provided cp858, which is "cp850+Euro sign", that's why it 
is the official codepage for western european languages on FreeDOS.

Ideally, cp859 would be the official codepage for western european 
languages because it is "cp850+Euro sign+Šš/Žž", used in estonian and 
few proper names (country names, etc.) and loanwords in finnish and 
"Œ/œ/Ÿ" to finally and perfectly handle french but it happens that many 
keyboard layouts have labeled characters on them which were dismissed on 
cp859 to make room for those extra letters.

(On FreeDOS, cp859 is available and can be used with many keyboard layouts.)

Sorry for typing too much. I always get carried away when talking about 
it. :)

Yes, DOSBOX handles codepages perfectly.

Hi Steve,

cp437 does not cover spanish because it needs uppercase-acute-accented 
vowels (other than "É/é"), as does portuguese and many other romance 
languages, such as catalan, which you mentioned. Providing "Ñ/ñ", "¡/¿", 
"«/»" and "ª/º" is not enough.


Dutch is not properly handled by any MS-DOS/IBM-DOS codepage, ISO 8859-x 
or any other 8-bit encoding I've seen so far because they all lack the 
"IJ/ij" ligature (apart from that, there's no problem). It is encoded on 
Unicode for compatibility with old character tables, therefore I assume 
that there's some platform out there where a dutch keyboard layout can 
type it.

Should cover Spanish and Dutch too.  I think it also covers Catalan.


There's a catch here: MS-DOS only provided cp850 for western Europe;

is the official codepage for western european languages on FreeDOS.

Only starting in 1998, though.

Hello Mr. Wong,

According to Wikipedia on Proto-Slavic, “As with most other 
proto-languages, no attested writings have been found”. Furthermore, 
both cyrillic letters you mentioned are available on any cyrillic codepage.

I have also found an extensive article on the Proto-Indo-European 
language; this time, there wasn't even a mention to some sort of writing.

If you found another source on both languages, please provide me with 
their character repertoire. I would also like to know which keyboard 
layouts would you like to see benefitted from the creation of such 
codepages.

 are perfectly understood). On FreeDOS 1.1, option 19 during the
 installation simply states Turkey and has the issue we've talked
 about. If you think it makes sense, you may want to forward that

Ok, thank you for the tip. I had actually assumed that Turkish F was 
the most used keyboard layout, therefore I had not provided further 
information at the time, but I'll correct that.
 ISO Latin codepages for FreeDOS are ready to go, for a long time
 already, by the way. Ruĝulo, if you and/or anyone out there reading this
 message feels that keyboard layouts based on ISO Latin codepages would
 be welcome, please let me know.
 I don't know if it's the right place but I'd suggest two additional
 layouts. Colemak would be the first one: same goals compared to Dvorak
 (which is already supported), but closer to QWERTY so it's intended to
 be easier to learn. More information on http://colemak.com/, public
 domain stuff.

 For French, there's BÉPO, the kind of keyboard that makes you regret you
 learnt AZERTY. It may need to be simplified a bit to fit DOS though.
 Everything is under free licenses, and there's more information on
 http://bepo.fr/.
Thank you for the tip on the Bépo layout; actually, I had already 
learned about it. I just didn't work on that yet. It's a very impressive 
layout, covering many languages written with the latin script. It seems 
that there's even support for vietnamese. There's no support for african 
languages on it, but I have already provided layouts for those languages 
anyway.

 The four lines above prepare and select 3 codepages, all available on 
 EGA.CPX. You'll trade xxx in the third line for:

 • 853, if you need to type turkish — and/or esperanto. It is important to 
 mention, though, that codepage 853 seems to be considered obsolete on what 
 concerns the turkish language. (Codepage 853 is the only one which handles 
 esperanto.)

 • 857, if you don't need esperanto. A good thing about codepage 857 is that 
 it not only seems to be the preferred codepage for turkish; you'll have the 
 Euro sign.

 • 858, highly recommended to type in western european languages. I say 
 recommended instead of needed because you could perfectly use cp857 to 
 type in, say, portuguese, spanish, italian, etc., however I don't advise you 
 to do that. If you'd like to know why, just let me know.
 Heh, now I'm curious. If you have time to explain I'd happily read your
 explanation.

a new version of the codepage pack has been released. Version 3.0 
provides codepages for arabic (CP-864E), hebrew (cp856/862), 
turkish-cp437 and brazilian ABIComp, as well as ukrainian codepages 
developed for FreeDOS containing the hryvnia sign and enhancements on 
cp853 -- DOS Multilingual Latin-3, particularly aimed at esperanto and 
maltese: formerly empty codepoints (6) are now filled with the 
plus/minus sign and 5 currency signs: Euro, Cent, Yen, Maltese Lira and 
Spesmilo.

The ZIP file (CPIDOS30.ZIP) can be downloaded from the software list

[Freedos-devel] New keyboard layout pack - KPDOS 3.0

Hi all,

a new version of the keyboard layout pack has been released. Version 3.0 
goes bidi -- french/arabic, US/arabic and US/hebrew layouts are now 
available (to be used under Thomas Wolff's Mined). Brazilian keyboards 
are now able to use cp860 as well as ABIComp; the US-Colemak layout is 
available; ukrainian keyboards can now type the hryvnia sign; 
corrections were made to czech (mainly, CapsLock now affects the czech 
accented letters in the first row) and brazilian ABNT keyboards (so that 
users can now type /, ? and ° on notebook keyboards which don't 
provide the / key).

Last but not least, all keyboards are now able to type esperanto.

The ZIP file can be downloaded from the software list (Base) or 
directly from here:

Hi all,

would anyone out there happen to know how did arabic DOS, on the old 
days, deal with:

1) The control characters needed to handle the script - ZWJ (Zero-width 
joiner), ZWNJ (zero-width non-joiner), RLM (right-to-left mark), LRM 
(left-to-right mark) and control characters needed to handle bilingual 
text (LTR and RTL) in a same sentence: RLE/LRE (right-to-left and 
left-to-right embedding), RLO/LRO (right-to-left and left-to-right 
override) and PDF (POP directional Formatting).

2) Codepage 720 and many others which only present the isolated shapes 
of the characters. DOS, seemingly, had somehow to rely on subfonts or 
any feature which would cause DOS to trade the characters' isolated 
shapes for their initial, medial or final shapes on-the-fly as the text 
was typed.

3) Combining chars. All arabic codepages, including cp864, include at 
least two codepoints which present them.

use the regular US-101 keyboard instead of the dutch one)...
CHCP 858 (I didn't even know that there was CHCP for FreeDOS)
I just don't know about that /NOHI parameter. :(

Yes, it is - I just don't know about /NOHI. :(

If you feel you'll need room for more than a codepage, I suggest you 
just run DISPLAY CON=(EGA,codepage,6) so that have room for 6 (maximum 
number). If you underestimated your needs and just created room for 1 
codepage, you can always rerun DISPLAY.
 8) How do I get an euro sign from keyboard? Thought using 858 instead of
 850 would allow this, keyboard has a sign above the 5.
RightAlt + 5 and RightAlt + E both do the trick.

 No offense to anybody, but even I know MS i18n codepage support is a
 joke. They never even bothered supporting Latins 1-4.

 I did make a bootdisk a while back (year ago?) intending to demo the
 codepage stuff with FreeDOS, but I never finished it (and nobody else
 seemed interested). I could (hopefully) dig it up if you're
 interested.
How did that demo work?

[Freedos-devel] New keyboard layout and codepage packs

Hi all,

this is to announce that there's a new codepage pack available, v2.3, 
which provides codepage for the cherokee syllabary and the bulgarian MIK 
codepage, both requested. There's, respectively, a new keyboard layout 
pack, v2.6, with the necessary enhancements on the US and the bulgarian 
keyboards; always important to emphasize is that both of them continue 
to work as usual under their default codepages.

There's also an important modification on the brazilian ABNT2 keyboard 
layout so that it gets around a failure on DOSEMU on what concerns its 
default handling of key 56h, also known as the 102nd key on the 
brazilian and most european keyboards.

Explanation: DOSEMU provides   (space / greater-than) for that key. 
Computer motherboards, so to speak, provide \| for both 2Bh and 56h 
keys (the latter one happening to be \| on the brazilian keyboard) as 
default, which is why the brazilian 56h key was left uncoded on the 
brazilian keyboard layout on previous keyboard layout packs. Therefore, 
if you are a brazilian DOSEMU user and use an ABNT keyboard, you should 
download this new keyboard layout pack.

Thanks to Alain Mouette for the report of the problem on DOSEMU. He 
provided a patch for the brazilian keyboard under DOSEMU here:

Hi Ladislav,

yes, I could test Blocek with the brazilian layout. I must tell you 
though that brazilian keyboards are not meant to work with cp860. 
According to MS-DOS standards, our keyboard is meant to work with cp850 
(i.e. cp858 here on FreeDOS) and cp437 (God knows why, because it's 
impossible to type portuguese with that CP). That CP is for portuguese 
keyboards only, which by the way also work with cp850 but not with cp437 
(MS and IBM were coherent in relation to portuguese keyboards).

Regardless of the adequacy of cp860 to brazilian keyboards, I could 
prepare the cp860uni.tbl (or any other) redirector; I'm glad I can help.

There's just a problem though. How do I create those files? They aren't 
plain text files.

I'm also brazilian and I also have a brazilian ABNT2 keyboard. The 
BR.KEY layouts works fine here. There's no need for adjustments, unless 
your keyboard hardware works with different scancodes (you said you have 
a notebook with a brazilian ABNT2 keyboard). Mine is a regular desktop 
mini-DIN (PS/2) keyboard.

Most intriguing is that not even KEYCODE is able to read the scancodes 
of that extra key in your notebook; in a normal condition, it would read 
115.

If you want to continue this conversation in portuguese, you can contact

One thing occured to me: if possible, please send me a close picture of 
your keyboard. I've already seen many oddities on the market which do 
not follow ABNT, portuguese or american standards. I've already seen, 
for instance, a regular US keyboard with a Ç key to the right of L. 
All the rest follows a standard US keyboard layout (i.e. the dead keys 
with the diacritics are missing). There's no official layout like that, 
anywhere. You can't set it up on Windows or any other operating system.

It seems you have one of those mini-keyboards with ABNT2 layout which 
we find here in Brazil; it probably uses proprietary scancodes. If 
that's the case, please send me the brand and model and I'll contact the 
manufacturer for the scancodes. (Anyway, if possible, I still want that 
close picture of your keyboard).

I don't know if you remember me but I helped Mateusz Viste with his 
Foxtype program, particularly on the creation of the characters. 
(There's been a long time a I don't speak with him; I guess his 
character database is much more comprehensive by now.)

Multilanguage printing, in your case, refers to unicode characters; that 
would also be great! :-)

Eric Auer is also interested on that; perhaps you two could coordinate a 
joint effort, what do you say?

Meanwhile, I'm curious about one thing: it seems that you provide 
keyboard layouts internally on your Blocek program, is it? How does it work?

We could continue on Blocek in private because it's off-topic in what 
concerns the original subject of this message. In case you want to, 
naturally.

Hi Bruce,

today, on FreeDOS, we rely on codepages already encoded into printer's 
firmware.

For instance, if I happen to be russian and type a text in russian then 
there's no problem since I most likely have a russian printer which is 
able to select russian codepages.

However, what happens if I'm brazilian and I want to print a russian 
text in my brazilian printer? There's no cp866 on its firmware.

There are programs which are able to somehow upload a codepage into a 
printer's RAM. There are ESC/P commands for that. I've tested a 
shareware program (for Windows) called DOSPRN which does exactly that. 
It has several codepages in its library. All I have to do is to type a 
russian text under DOS, run DOSprn, select codepage 866 on it and send 
the text to the printer. It works perfectly.

A solution like this under FreeDOS would be perfect because it would 
override printer firmware limitations which are generally based on 
geography. My Epson Stylus Color 740 inkjet printer certainly does not 
have eastern european codepages in its firmware; on the other hand, most 
likely the very same printer sold on the russian market does not have, 
let's say, maltese codepage 853 or baltic codepage 775.

Another important point for this need is that I devised several 
codepages for FreeDOS to assist several languages never previously 
assisted by any DOS-like OS which, being my creation, are therefore 
available on no printer's firmware. The idea is to be able to send 
these codepages to a printer as well.

I've read a lot about ESC/P and ESC/P2 commands to know that this could 
be accomplished on several printers; I know that there are some printers 
who doesn't apply to that but many FreeDOS users would already be assisted.

It would be interesting if there was some program which could somehow 
read the 8x16 font files encoded into FreeDOS CPI files so that it could 
build printer codepages out of the display codepages; if this happens to 
be too difficult or a big-time-consuming effort, I could provide the 
shape of all characters of all codepages on a TXT file with, let's say, 
matrixes of 0s and 1s representing the dots the compose them. As a 
matter of fact, I already prepared such file a long time ago. It has 
many latin, cyrillic, greek, georgian, armenian and many other 
characters which would already help us very much for a start.

However, FoxType is not about a Text Editor - it's just about a way to  
read UTF-8 files.
That's why the Type in FoxType, implying that it's an enhancement over  
the regular DOS command Type.

Hi John,

I have just tested the US keyboard(under 
MS-DOS EDIT) and the Left_Alt works just like 
Right_Alt.

If you haven'tprepared and selected any cp 
(codepage), then you'llbe using the character table implemented in the 
BIOS of your VGA adapter which, on 99.999% of the cases, is identical (in 
encoding) to FreeDOS (and MS-DOS, IBM-DOS and probably any other DOS) cp437 and 
that's why if you run KEYB under these conditions, it will work as if you had 
prepared and selected that codepage. In that case, "KEYB US" should work just 
like the US implementation of the keyboard BIOS extension.

If you haveactually prepared and selectedcp437 (or 
cp850),"KEYB US" should still work just like the US implementation of the 
keyboard BIOS extension.


The Right_Alt key only works differently 
(i.e. like the AltGr key on international keyboards) if there's a 
character associated to a given combination.If you're using cp858 
(which is FreeDOS default), the Right_Alt key works as AltGr 
only to AltGr+ 5 and AltGr + E, 
whichdisplay the Euro sign.
For all the other combinations, Right_Alt 
remains the same as Left_Alt.

Therefore, as far as I can see it, KEYB not only 
sticks to the commitment of being 100% MS-DOS compatible as well as it enhances 
MS-DOS KEYB functionality, since it allows you to encode your own layouts and 
even extra layers, such as, for example, combining keys with Shift + 
AltGr.

All my KEY encodings and testings are under a Win98 
DOS Box. Perhaps KEYB behaves slightly different when working under FreeCOM 
(and/or under FreeDOS EDIT).
(Definition of "KEY encodings": All the keyboard 
layouts are encoded into *.KEY files.)

By the way, the issue of being a multimedia 
keyboard won't probably have anything to do with that. All that happens is, your 
multimedia keyboard has extra scancodes for its multimedia keys - which aren't 
dealt withon standard KEY files so they'll remain "dead" unless you run 
someprogram which handles them.

In what regards codepages 772, 808, 848, 849, 866, 1119, 1125, 1131, 30002, 
30008, 30010-30019, 58152, 58210, 59234, 60258, 61282, 62306:


1) The characters in the range A0h-AFh are small letters; their capitalized 
shapes are in the range 80h-8Fh.
2) The characters in the range E0h-EFh are also small letters and their 
capitalized shapes are in the range 90h-9Fh.


I would like to know who should I talk to regarding capitalization of 
letters in the upper-half of codepages.
I would prepair a capitalization table and send it to you. Please contact

I'm glad you typed in russian, because my knowledge on ukrainian is just about 
the alphabet and a few expressions)

I understood that you're ukrainian and you're used 
to KEYUKR.COM, which I just found on the web and I'll try it here to see the 
differences between the support that I provided - which was based on Windows XP 
and IBM OS/2, since I didn't have access to a localized version of MS-DOS which 
assisted the ukrainian language - and the support provided by that third-party 
solution, KEYUKR. I'll also compare the character table used with KEYUKR with 
the official IBM-DOS codepage 1125.

I also understood that KEYUKR uses Left_Alt 
+ Right_Shift to switch to the latin layout - sowe're not talking 
about ukrainian MS-DOS KEYB. Anyway, ifKEYUKR is (or was) much more used 
on Ukraine than ukrainian MS-DOS (or ifthere was never an ukrainian MS-DOS 
at all), please let me know.

Arkady, this is a matter of layout, so this is for me to solve. :-)

UR is how Microsoft operating systems address the ukrainian keyboards.
UA is how the IBM operating systems do that.
So, I prepared the ukrainian layouts to accept both UA and UR.

Freewolle, I have posted here some messages regarding your problem but it 
seems you didn't receive or read them yet.
Once again I suggest you to try switching to the latin layout through 
Left_Alt + Left_Shift.
In relation to your keyboard: you used to run KEYUKR and, even though I 
found it on the web, I tried it here and I wasn't able to use it 
accordingly. I couldn't switch to the cyrillic layout.
I prepared the ukrainian layouts according to the mappings that I found on 
Microsoft and IBM websites, so I based myself on the major industry and not 
on KEYUKR (which I didn't even know to exist until now).
Please provide me a TXT file or an image file of your keyboard (since it 
seems there are two distinct ukrainian kyeboards) and I will be able to help 
you.
One thing I can tell for sure: I tested the ukrainian layouts that I 
prepared and they both displayed those 4 extra ukrainian letters.

Thanks for the explanation on KEYUKR. Now I was 
able to test that.
I just compared KEYUKR layout with the major 
industry (MS and IBM) layouts.
The solution I implemented at the time which is 
closer to KEYUKR is UR.KEY which, when compiled, generates UR.KL - which is 
probably the one that you're using there.

The only difference is that UR.KL is based on a 
102-key keyboard while KEYUKR is based on a regular 101-key US keyboard. 
Unfortunately, it's precisely on the 102nd key that you would find the ukrainian 
GHE. Even then, because of the US keyboard, Microsoft provided the ukrainian 
GHEalso to befound on Right_Alt + russian GHE. All 
the rest is the same between KEYUKR and UR.KL; ukrainian YE, I and YI are found 
on the same keys, both under KEYUKR and UR.KL.

I understand the inconvenience of having to type 
AltGr + russian GHE every time you need the ukrainian GHE; I 
could prepare a 101-key version of the official Microsoft version, which would 
provide the replace the russian YO for the ukrainian GHE, then we would have 
identical solutions on KEYUKR and UR.KL.

Nevertheless,I would need this information 
from you in the first place: in order to avoid ambiguity, I would need the /id: 
xxx identifier code for the 102-key ukrainian keyboard.

On the other hand, there is this real 101-key 
ukrainian keyboard layout which is quite different from the KEYUKR solution. I 
found it on IBM website and I also prepared it for FreeDOS at the time. The 
filename is UR465.KEY. When compiled, you have UR465.KL. To use it, you would 
need to type "KEYB UR,,UR465.KL /ID:465". It does provide some letters on 
different positions from the ones they're found on KEYUKR and 
UR.KL.
* The ukrainian GHE is found at the right side of 
ukrainian/russian KHA;
* The russian I/ukrainian Yisfound 
between EF and VE;
* The ukrainian I is found between EM and 
TE;
* The ukrainian YI is found at the right side of 
YU.
Just by chance - is this the keyboard that you 
have?
If so, this is it: you have the 101-key, /ID:465 
ukrainian keyboard.

Furthermore, the character set devised for KEYUKR 
provides a capital dotted I and, on all ukrainian sites that I found and all 
orthography sites that explained the ukrainian letters, the ukrainian capital I 
is undotted, just like the latin one. In order 
not to expand the character sets for FreeDOS because of a single character (the 
middle dot, which you requested), could I ask you to use "*" 
instead?

to start contributing with FreeDOS): we still don't have how to print text 
on different languages, meaning that we don't have codepage support for 
printers.

What I provided so far is codepage support for screen as well as keyboard 
layouts.

FreeDOS and a new package of DOS-oriented codepages.
The details are as follows.

KEYBOARD.SYS, KEYBRD2.SYS new release: KPDOS package v2.1

 This is an important update to US keyboard users: the US Dvorak keyboard 
was
 being loaded instead. Furthermore, the documentation was greatly improved;
 the US and UK (standard) keyboards have been enhanced to type esperanto,
 maltese and afrikaans (the US keyboard was also enhanced to type maori); 
the
 norwegian and swedish/finnish keyboards were enhanced to type saami and
 karelian languages, as well as ingrian and livonian. Important: nothing has

 for the maltese keyboard (as released in Malta in Feb/2005) was added. For
 users who haven't downloaded any former KPDOS package, this is mandatory in

[Freedos-devel] MHCOMD.VBX module

Hello all.

First of all, please accept my apologies for posting an off-topic message.

Second, I don't know whether the request that I'll be doing is considered
piracy or not.
If it is, please accept my apologies for that as well and just disregard
this message.

The point is: while assisting a client, a program stopped working because it
lacks this MHCOMD.VBX module.

If is there anyone out there who has this module and could send it to me, I
would be very grateful.

There is this BIBLIO program which, after the HDD being reformatted, it
stopped working.
As soon as I double-clicked that, it called for a GRID.VBX module which I
was able to find within the (very old) floppies of my client.
I copied it into the HDD and the program then called for a CRYSTAL.VBX
module which luckily I was able to find as well.
Then, the program called for this MHCOMD.VBX module... Which I didn't find
anywhere (within the floppies that were still readable).
I tried the web as well. No deal.

Furthermore, if any of you could point me to some other mailing list where
perhaps I could find help, I would also be very grateful.

[Freedos-devel] Announce: Keyboard Layouts for KEYB v2.0

Hi all,

this is to announce the first keyboard layout pack for KEYB v2.0.

It is called KPDOS, because all keyboard layouts were encoded based on the
DOS codepages available at CPIDOS.
(I'll start working on KPWIN).
