The rules are straightforward but a revision of terminology might help.

Scope and topic are distinct concepts.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/scope#Noun sense 1.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/topic#Noun senses 1 and 2.

Better to state,
"Keep posts on-scope. We set up this mailing list to discuss FreeDOS
topics."

Ie. FreeDOS topics are within the scope of the list. "Bug 194564 in
Debian Linux" is a genuine topic but certainly off-scope.

2022-08-01 Thread John Price

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. NO HATE SPEECH OR BULLYING

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed,
and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture,
sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

Don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what Usenet
   turned into.

2. NO PROMOTIONS OR SPAM

Remember, this group is about FreeDOS. General DOS topics are okay,
but try to keep it related to FreeDOS. Self-promotion, spam and
irrelevant links aren't allowed. Spammers will be banned.

Keep posts on-topic. We set up this mailing list to discuss FreeDOS
   issues.

3. BE KIND AND COURTEOUS

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's
treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but
   kindness is required.

No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has
   said, send a reply off-list.

2021-04-01 Thread John Price

--

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. NO HATE SPEECH OR BULLYING

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed,
and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture,
sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

Don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what Usenet
   turned into.

2. NO PROMOTIONS OR SPAM

Remember, this group is about FreeDOS. General DOS topics are okay,
but try to keep it related to FreeDOS. Self-promotion, spam and
irrelevant links aren't allowed. Spammers will be banned.

Keep posts on-topic. We set up this mailing list to discuss FreeDOS
   issues.

3. BE KIND AND COURTEOUS

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's
treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but
   kindness is required.

No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has
   said, send a reply off-list.

Re: [Freedos-user] New FreeDOSers Monthly Reminder

2020-05-01 Thread A BM
Hello, I am still having problems. I burn the image to the bootable usb. I
start the computer and install on the hard drive. Just then the computer
restarts but it returns to Windows 10, it doesn't seem to have installed
anything. If I tell the BIOS to start from USB, the Freedos installer no longer
appears, but Freedos loads. But if I remove the USB, as I said before, start
Windows, no trace of Freedos. I have tried the Freedos Standard image and the
USB image, using rufus, it remains the same. Thank you.

2019-11-01 Thread John Price

--

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. NO HATE SPEECH OR BULLYING

Make sure everyone feels safe. Bullying of any kind isn't allowed,
and degrading comments about things like race, religion, culture,
sexual orientation, gender or identity will not be tolerated.

Don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what Usenet
   turned into.

2. NO PROMOTIONS OR SPAM

Remember, this group is about FreeDOS. General DOS topics are okay,
but try to keep it related to FreeDOS. Self-promotion, spam and
irrelevant links aren't allowed. Spammers will be banned.

Keep posts on-topic. We set up this mailing list to discuss FreeDOS
   issues.

3. BE KIND AND COURTEOUS

We're all in this together to create a welcoming environment. Let's
treat everyone with respect. Healthy debates are natural, but
   kindness is required.

No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has
   said, send a reply off-list.

not really your fault as https://www.freedos.org/lists/
has text that looks like a link (: Mail-archive
http://www.mail-archive.com/freedos-user@lists.sourceforge.net/)
und other fields that don't look like a link, but are.

click the innocent looking Freedos-user

OOPS! The remind file could not be downloaded!

Here I am, brain the size of the universe, trying to send you a simple
email, but wouldn't you know it, the file doesn't even exist! Where
does that leave me?!

I'm sure it would say something about FreeDOS, or Jim Hall, or some
mailing list or other, but what do I care.

*sigh* Humans.

In case you think you can fix this, here is the log:

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. Don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what Usenet

2. Keep posts on-topic. Remember, we set up this mailing list to
   discuss FreeDOS issues.

3. No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has

MONTHLY REMINDER FOR THE FREEDOS MAILING LISTS

Hello, and welcome to the FreeDOS mailing list!

If you have been a list member for some time, then you can skip this
as you should be familiar with the rules by now.

The FreeDOS Project aims to create a free, complete implementation of
classic DOS. DOS is still a popular system, and plenty of people use
FreeDOS to play classic DOS games, run legacy software, and support
embedded systems. For more information about FreeDOS, visit:

Some suggestions:

** Please send only plain text email messages, rather than messages

Re: [Freedos-user] New FreeDOSers Monthly Reminder

2017-11-01 Thread Jim Hall
I recognize we don't have as much traffic on this list as we used to.
When we set up the monthly reminder, we had a lot of email traffic -
and many new people joining the email lists. The monthly reminder
helped set certain ground rules to help our discussion remain
productive and avoid going off-topic.

We still have new members join the email list, so I think an
occasional reminder is helpful - even if we also link to the reminder
text on the website.

I'll at least make the reminder shorter. It doesn't need to be so
wordy. For example, we don't need the description about FreeDOS or the
link to the website.

If the monthly reminder continues to be bothersome into 2018, we can reconsider.

Jim

I, on the other hand, LIKE getting the monthly reminder! For one thing it
lets me know the list is still active. This list doesn't get all that much
activity, and could easily go a whole month with nothing.

If it were truly bothersome, I would just make a filter to shunt the monthly
reminder off to a folder.

[Freedos-user] New FreeDOSers Monthly Reminder

2017-07-01 Thread John Price

MONTHLY REMINDER FOR THE FREEDOS MAILING LISTS

Hello, and welcome to the FreeDOS mailing list!

If you have been a list member for some time, then you can skip this
as you should be familiar with the rules by now.

--

The FreeDOS Project aims to create a free, complete implementation of
classic DOS. DOS is still a popular system, and plenty of people use
FreeDOS to play classic DOS games, run legacy software, and support
embedded systems. For more information about FreeDOS, visit:

  http://www.freedos.org/

We have only a few rules for posting to the FreeDOS mailing lists:

1. Don't swear. We don't want this mailing list to become what Usenet
   turned into.

2. Keep posts on-topic. Remember, we set up this mailing list to
   discuss FreeDOS issues.

3. No flame wars. If you feel really strongly against what someone has
   said, send a reply off-list.

Some suggestions:

** Please send only plain text email messages, rather than messages
formatted in HTML. Plain text makes it easier for everyone to read
your posts. Above all, HTML email is particularly difficult for
   some screen readers.

** When replying to messages, please quote just the bit of email you
are replying to. Don't copy the whole conversation if you don't
   need to.

--

/* This is an automated message sent out to the mailing list at the
first of each month. It is automagically downloaded from
http://freedos.sourceforge.net/freedos/lists/remind.txt

Feel free to contact John Price if necessary by replying to this
message. */

I swear, Jim Hall can't do anything right.

It sure is a shame about Kevin Durant's MCL.

Jim, why are you trying to "remind" us of anything? What are you, a

Don't copy the whole conversation if you don't
   need to.

I have a small number of 1 GB and 2 GB USB 2.0 sticks, but they are already
occupied, so the smallest I could use for FreeDOS installer is 4 GB.

Favorite copying program to write to USB stick in NetBSD and FreeBSD is dd,
just as with Linux and Mac OS X.

Writing to the USB stick should not require software, such as Rufus, that only
runs on MS-Windows; should be doable with dd. In DOS there is also RAWRITE?

But I would want to be able to use the rest of the USB stick instead of keeping
it locked out.

Tom
