Well after all it's not going to happen very soon, but as soon as 4NT is
far enough ahead of 4DOS and 4NT specific code is removed there may be a
possibility.

Here's what Rex Conn says at the end:
Once the new versions are released, I'm willing to discuss somebody
taking over maintaining possibly upgrading 4DOS. (There'd have to be a
non-disclosure agreement for the source, the executables would remain
freeware.)
NDA and Open Source are mutually exclusive... :-(
What license has 4OS2 source been released under?

My experience is that 4DOS works with FreeDOS kernal except for the command
line history.

Sometimes, quite often, the command on the line when using the history is
not the one that gets excuted, rather the one prior to it. I've only had
this happen with the FreeDOS kernel. And it can can make a real mess of
things when the wrong command gets excecuted.

I'm curious if anyone has had the same experience??

FreeCOM is still preferred, due to size and license. Just as I prefer
the FreeDOS kernel over the Win9x kernel (io.sys).
Silly Microsoft for including a bitmap into a 220KB kernel which was
also intended to be put on bootdisks with only 1.44MB capacity.
With WinME they corrected this, but the WinME's IO.SYS file does not
allow many operations (SYS C: for example).
WinME 's IO.SYS is 44KB, if I remember correctly.

Anyway, 4DOS is *VERY* powerfull, but the shell is about 200KB. Very
interesting as a 3rd-party freeware application.
No way they would release it as open source, as JPsoft has other
products based on the 4DOS code.

when no XMS memory is available (a clean boot process), both 4DOS and
FreeCOM use enormous amounts of memory.
This can be demonstrated by using FreeDOS HIMEM.EXE options as
implemented by Michael Devore to limit the available XMS-memory to just
the amount needed for DOS=HIGH (put kernel parts in High Memory Area).

Never seen this, and I've worked with it under FreeDOS for about an year.
Which kernel and 4DOS builds do you mean? Do you have UMBHistory=YES? I
do. Do you log the history into a file? I don't.

Yes, it's a very liberal license. Also FreeDOS does have precedent in
distributing binary only software, see arrow-asm in lang, but not in
base. Even then FreeCOM has some advantages, being a lot smaller, while
still having nice features such as command line editing and tab completion.

The license is very similar to
www.w3.org/Consortium/Legal/copyright-software

The two sections that are added can be found (in slightly edited form) in
the GPL. If this were a source license it would be a BSD-ish subset
(possibly even GPL-compatible but IANAL so can't be sure).

Yes, the license does permit redistribution of 4DOS in the FreeDOS
distribution, as mentioned in the license:

Permission to use, copy, modify, and distribute this software and its
documentation, with or without modification, for any purpose and without fee
or royalty is hereby granted, provided that you include the following on ALL
copies of the software and documentation or portions thereof, including
modifications, that you make:
..and the 4 terms are:
1. license is included
2. notify of any changes you made (if any)
3. fee may be charged to make a copy / to distribute
4. 4DOS license may not be changed, or sublicensed.
Since no source code is available, this is not something that should
appear in the FreeDOS Base list, but it can be included in the Util
list. And I think it should!

I'll create an LSM for this on FreeDOS.org.

no-longer commercially viable. Maybe in the future this will not be the

I'd rather not modify the 4dos750.zip archive to eliminate the
CSCLEAN.BAT file from the distribution. If I did that, I feel I'd have
to document this in a separate README file, and I'd rather not do that

I've done the next best thing: I've created a short 4dos750.txt file in
the '4dos' directory on ibiblio, and it warns users not to run the

Hallo Bart,
The license is very similar to
www.w3.org/Consortium/Legal/copyright-software
Indeed! 80% the same thing! No one can really invent a license anymore.
The two sections that are added can be found (in slightly edited form)
in the GPL. If this were a source license it would be a BSD-ish subset
(possibly even GPL-compatible but IANAL so can't be sure).
It'd be like the original BSD license which is GPL-incompatibe because of
the advertising clause.

But it's interesting to see under which license will be released what we
hope to see released ;-)

Re: [Freedos-user] 4DOS free now!

2004-08-26 Thread Luchezar Georgiev
Hi Jim,
I'd rather not modify the 4dos750.zip archive to eliminate the
CSCLEAN.BAT file from the distribution. If I did that, I feel I'd have
to document this in a separate README file, and I'd rather not do that
right now.
You're right - I didn't notice that this file was included by JPSoft
themselves.

I've done the next best thing: I've created a short 4dos750.txt file in
the '4dos' directory on ibiblio, and it warns users not to run the
CSCLEAN.BAT batch file.
Great. Although, as long as the user doesn't have a CONFIG.JPS file,
CSCLEAN.BAT won't do any harm.

Lucho

Hi Lucho, you're multilangual by now, even learning Dutch (groet)?
it creates a MSDOS with long filename support.
I think msdos.sys requires bootgui=0
then
C:
CD \
CD 32BD
WIN
and you boot into the protected-mode/32bit DOS.
it was a PCWELT (German magazine) article back in 1999.
I tested it once, but it had no practical use.
Best use is from a clean win98 installation.
You might need to copy additional VXD files to the 32BD directory (or a
subdirectory) to satisfy the registry requirements
(netware drivers, for example).

Just a little courtesy to the many Dutches here ;-) I don't actually know
more than hallo, groet and dank je (but I'm always willing to learn
more ;-)

CD 32BD

Can be used to backup long named files under DOS with 4DOS, as the last
part of the following PC-Welt article suggests:
http://www.pcwelt.de/know-how/tipps_tricks/betriebssysteme/windows/4064/

Best use is from a clean win98 installation. You might need to copy
additional VXD files to the 32BD directory (or a subdirectory) to

So this in fact is a mini-Windows... without windows ;-)
What a pity that DOSLFN 0.33 isn't 100% compatible with FreeDOS :( This
morning I thrashed a FAT16 filesystem trying to copy long named files
under it but there wasn't enough space for all of them. After I
re-formatted it, I did the same under MS-DOS. No problems! It gracefully
stopped after the disk was full. OK, our kernel is surely still buggy. But
Bart is also right that the DOSLFN author Jason Hood is not interested in
FreeDOS. Why we're still ignored sometimes? Aren't we a force yet?

Dank,
Lucho

Well, a question of point of view. For me, this all is DOS, the DOS
extender of Microsoft, and Windows is what comes behind KRNL386.EXE.
After all, the same Windows application (KERNEL, USER, GDI) could be
written over DOS (32-bit DOS, true), or over the WinNT kernel.
