My bad - read it quickly this morning before I was fully awake. You'd
want to start a new thread though.

My new in-construction box is an Asus S-Presso box. It has gentoo and xfce on
so far, the tv card has just been solved, but is inferior quality to the
other card saa7134 I own, so I will swap this over later, when the old freevo
box is relieved of duties.

The S-Presso is not MCE compatible, so they won't make any more, and finding
the right CPU wasn't easy as they aren't made either. However, the box is
really cute.

It came with a Linux based mini distro to run it without windows but trying to
boot the CD caused a kernel panic. I was hoping either to hack the
mini-distro or borrow drivers from it for various bits.

Don't be too hard on them, they say this somewhere in their support
pages. ;-)

How do I get my Linux driver for my XPC?

Currently, Shuttle provides Linux supports for some XPCs by packaging
Linux driver CD along with the systems. However, not all XPCs and
motherboards come with a Linux driver CD. Since Linux is an "open
source" operating system; most drivers are written/provided by 3rd
parties. We strongly encourage our users to search the Internet or visit
the chipset vendors' web sites for any new available drivers.

As we continue our efforts to have every latest models tested for Linux
compatibility; please keep in mind that not all
features/functions/drivers are supported at this time. Thank you for
your understanding as we continue to push for better Linux
implementation and support in the future.

The only read problem that is outstanding is to get the zd1211 WLAN
driver to work with WPA and I think that this will come with kernel
2.6.18. They have made some funny design decisions, fancy *not* building
in a TV-out connector when the graphics chips supports TV-out and it a
media center pc, I think they are really gaming machines with a pretty
front panel.

Actually, I had no problems building this Linux box, everything worked
first time, takes the fun out of it really (except the WPA-PSK)

2006-09-17 Thread Justin Wetherell
I have built a bunch of standalone Freevo boxes. I have found that the Dell Optiplex small form factor computers are the best starting point. They are about as big as a VCR and very quite. Just pop in a video card with TV out, a tv tuner, and a IR receiver and you are done. You can buy refurb Optiplex's from Dell for about 250 bucks.

Hi.

I have a standalone freevo box too. The hardware is an asus pundit-r.
I think more people have it. It's small and nice-looking. Several usb
ports, 2 pci slots, and graphic chipset (ati radeon igp9100) and
ethernet in the motherboard. I have only one hard disk, with no remote
storing. The main problem is noise. Any solution for this? It is
bigger when it is working. I've been thinking about looking for
quieter fans, but I don't know if I can change the one in the voltage
supplier (how do you say this in English??).
For the software, it runs debian sarge and the ati drivers for tv-out.
The problem is that it lacks 3d support, so I'm missing some games.
I've also built a LFS system in another partition. I'll use it when
x.org provides tv-out. Right now, the Gatos driver isn't good enough
and the image is fuzzy, but 3d works (checked with vnc) and I'll get
rid of propietary drivers. I hope I can have this with Freevo2.

That's all. And again: any ideas against noise?

2006-09-14 Thread Chris Thomas
I did some digging and I think I'm going to use Pebble Linux as the
base for my stand-alone epia/freevo machine.

http://www.nycwireless.net/pebble

If I can put it all together by complining a new kernel, installing
the necessary packages, etc... it should be an imporvement. I also
need to make sure that freevo's cache is saved on the nfs share.

I played with iMedia MythTV Linux yesterday:

http://www.mini-box.com/s.nl/it.A/id.421/.f?sc=8&category=17

It's slick, but isn't exactly what I want to use due to the limited
packages and hardware support.

I'll post my results.

Re: [Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-09-11 Thread Ashley Dawkins
Chris, I had been thinking along those lines regarding the micro drive /
flash solution, but I was unsure of repeated read/writes to CF for logs etc,
hence the micro-drive. I also have a file server for my media; this will
soon be updated to a 1TB NAS solution (just got to work out how to get it
thru the door and installed without the missus noticing ;¬) )so storage not
really an issue, although I am curious as to the 'best' way to access
network shares. I currently mount the shares using NFS and amend the Freevo
configuration; does Freevo support direct access to them or must they be
mounted?

I have a micro atx board in a very nice Silverstone Lascala LC11 case and
have had no issues with playback of DVD (discs or files) or TV so I am
pretty happy with the hardware side and I have a Blueyonder TV Drive PVR so
don't intend to utilize any TV recording.

I might be a bit biased regarding distro, as I am used to Slackware I didn't
really look at any others, but I'm sure there would be a huge discussion on
the best distro for the job, so I'm not going to go there !!

Hadn't heard of Freepia, so I'll be checking that out later.

Ashley.

The key ingredient in my stand-alone freevo box is an EPIA ME6000
mini-itx motherboard. This board has mpeg2 decoding built-in, so dvd
playback will be smooth without any additional hardware.

The next step is storage. Where will you save the system and where
will you save your media. I chose to save my media on a seperate file
server, thus eliminating the amount of noise coming from my freevo
box.

I then installed Gentoo along with Xorg, Freevo, Lirc, etc... on it
using a standard hard drive. I configured everything just the way I
wanted it (including booting straight into Freevo).

http://freevo.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/doc/BootFreevo

I then copied the image of the hard drive to a compact flash card.
Using a CF-IDE adapter I was able to boot directly from the card and
mount my media over the network.

My setup isn't perfect, but I'm waiting for Freevo 2.0 until I make
any big changes. Using Debian and mounting the system read-only would
be 2 improvements.

You can follow Karl's advice and use a fancy bootsplash to get add
some eye candy.

Also, check out Freepia:

Hope this helps.

I think the BIOS does initialize the TV out and LILO is shown on the TV
out. As soon as the kernel boots the kernel takes care about all this
and just initializes the VGA output :-(. Don't know if there is a kernel
parameter to initialize the TV out.

Re: [Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-09-11 Thread Chris Thomas

Also, check out Freepia:

http://freepia.shaibn.com

Hope this helps.

Re: [Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-09-11 Thread Ashley Dawkins
Hi Karl, had a look at the bootsplash option, which sort of started my
problems, as I can only seem to get output to the monitor, not the TV,
during the boot process. There is a nice bootsplash download in the themes
section of the Freevo site, which I was hoping to use. My current setup has
the TV out initialized in my rc.local, which is well past the point of the
bootsplash. I am currently hunting around the Matox forums; there is a
fairly recent BIOS update for the card, so I might pop it into an old
Windoze box I have, and update it to see if that makes a difference. The
thing that I find confusing, is that the LILO boot screen displays to the TV
when connected (at this point obviously I have not run any of the commands
to move frame buffers etc, as per the How-To), but as the kernel boot
messages appear, they only display on the monitor. This is possibly my lack
of understanding about how the Matrox FB drivers work/should be configured,
but don't really know

As far as hardware/configuration goes, I have a workable Freevo install on
Slackware 10.1, with which I am quite familiar, so not a problem at the
moment, but I would be keen to look at getting to an almost 'embedded' type
install, hopefully on a micro-drive or flash card, but not researched that
fully; that was to be the next stage once the actual 'proof was in the
pudding'.

As for location, I am in the South West, about 9 miles East of Bath.

Cheers for now,

Ashley.

Hi Ashley,

You mentioned pretty boot process;

http://www.bootsplash.org/

Try that, suse have been using it for a while, you can do things like
animations (fbmngplay) and progress bars using it, and its not as bulky
as RHGB.

as far as hardware is concerned a good UK provider is

https://linitx.com/

I could probably help out with building a distribution especially for
freevo... Are you going to linux from scratch it? I personally would
prefer to build it out of a seriously trimmed down redhat/fedora or
ubuntu. I don't have a great deal of time however with the projects I'm
currently involved in.

The advantage of fedora is anaconda which can be used to build a
bootable install disc from whatever packages are on an installed system.
The advantage of ubuntu is the live CD aspect.

I also have some SVGs of the freevo logo and a device I did a while back
which unfortunately I've still not managed to complete a website with.

Re: [Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-08-18 Thread Chris Thomas
I've setup a freevo media pc that runs locally off of a 512MB CF card
using a mini-itx Via Epia board. It boots, logs in, mounts a nfs
network share and starts freevo automatically. I've been running it
for over a year now, and so far no problems.

When Freevo 2.0 comes out I'm planning to make some additional
improvements like mounting the system read-only and making updates
easier.

I'm not using a Matrox card, so I can't help you with that.

[Freevo-users] Best standalone Freevo solution.

2006-08-18 Thread Ashley Dawkins

Hi, one thing about Freevo is that there are many ways to
achieve the same result. Based on the articles in the Wiki and a good price on
the card, I purchased a Matrox G400. I have a good Freevo setup for a
standalone Media Centre style box, but moving it to a completely monitor/keyboard/mouse
free set-up is giving me some grief. I have followed the articles in the Wiki
to get TV out, I use the mga drivers from the Mplayer source with good results,
but I find I am unable to tweak the configuration to my satisfaction. Some of
this is outside the scope of the Freevo project, but hopefully someone who has
a nice standalone solution can offer some most welcome words of wisdom.

I will step through my ‘niggles’

I use lilo to boot the system,
which initially outputs to the TV when it is connected to the composite
connection on the second head of the G400. As the kernel output starts,
this only appears on the monitor. I was looking at the nice bootspalsh
solution in the skins section, but if I only had the TV connected, my
current configuration would not show this.

I have the commands to enable
TV out in my rc.local as per the Wiki. When executed, I have the TV output
back with no output on the monitor.

When I start Freevo, I get
output to both the monitor and the TV. Okay, I could disconnect the
monitor and achieve what I am after, but I still don’t get what is
going on and I would like to understand it.

I would love to be able to contribute to the Wiki, but the
bits are not quite gelling together for me to feel confident about doing this.
Any help or suggestions to overcome the above issues would be very much
appreciated, as would any other suggestions or comments regarding a standalone
project. Has anyone used a microdrive in a project, and if so, how does it
perform?

My box is based on Slackware 10.2 with Freevo 1.5.4.

Thanks in advance.
