I guess it'd have to be USB based so that is a drawback alright, I've no

Apologies for the brainfart - I actually knew this, but somehow it
didn't come to mind at the moment. fwiw, the biostar board i referenced
was used with a digital-out dongle that had both coax and optical in a
molded connector.

But yes, spdif is 0.5v, and the motherboard is probably transmitting
at TTL levels, closer to 5v. You should stick a hex inverter between the
motherboard header and the coax port.

For best results, you'd also want to isolate the computer's ground
rail from the signal ground with a good pulse transformer. This
will prevent the s/pdif link from creating a ground loop between the
computer's earth-ground and the receiver's signal-ground, if it turns
out that the s/pdif input on the receiver is not isolated itself. This
is basically the reason why home a/v gear isn't grounded - that's the
easiest way to avoid a nasty ground loop that might insert a 120hz
overlay into every signal.

Hobbyists can pull good pulse transformers off of old ethernet cards.

From an audio perspective, the only advantage of the optical
connection is that it's really, really easy. Optical heads with
integrated-everything are available for a few bucks from mouser,
digikey, etc.

   Anyhow. Good info here:

Apparantly there are two types of spidf. One inside the PC runs on 5v
whereas the one outside the PC aka between amps etc runs at much lower
voltage. You "should" use converters when plugging between that
inside spidf and like a coaxial digital input on a amp.

But I agree with the comments about the ps3. I pre-ordered mine in
australie before they pushed the date back.. Hopefully I will be one
the first people in perth to try the ps3 as a freevo box yay!!

Sold wireless router with LInuxOS and netfilter/iptables and no source code.
Subsequently forced to pay gpl-violations.org costs.

Sold Spresso with LInux software and no source code and won't supply on
request. I reported them to gpl-violations.org and was told that this matter
would be added onto another matter they are 'discussing' with ASUS.

I know Gigabyte never did release the source for their
ext2-with-gz-compression driver from "gentus linux". Not that it was at
all reliable, from what i hear.

For whatever reason it's not mentioned on the msicomputer.com site,
but on the msi.com.tw site, the specs say it has an spdif header on the
board.

Usually an spdif-out header is 3 pins - one signal, one ground, one
+5v. You can hook up an RCA connector directly to the signal and ground.
If you want optical, the +5v is to power the optical head.

Might be good to contact MSI and ask them whether or not it's really
there on the current version of the board before jumping, in any case.

fwiw, I used to have a biostar board that had a completely
undocumented spdif header, which worked just fine.

Well going forward what you'd really want is hdmi output. Most decent
new amps and tvs have this and it'll carry your digital video and audio
signal for you in one cable. So the PS3 might be a good candidate for a
next gen platform for freevo v2. It's got hdmi and apparently you'll be
able to install linux on it. At €640 this doesn't look like a bad option
given you're getting at gaming console too but it remains to be seen how
well it works in real life.
Asus and MSI have some good candidates - boards with onboard Geforce
 6150 w/ tv and hdtv-out.

 http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=2&model=1138&l1=3&l2=101&l3=0

 http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K9NGM2-FID&class=mb

The asus comes with the tv-out bracket, the msi site says theirs is
 'optional'.

the geforce6150 has enough xvmc oomph for mpeg2 ad HD resolutions. no
mpeg4 support in hardware, but that probably shouldn't be an issue. On
the other hand, I have no idea what it takes to decode h.264 at HD
resolutions - but at SD resolutions, my athlon-xp 1600 does just fine.

both support spdif out at 44.1 and 48khz, the msi board also does 96 and
 192khz and at 20 and 24 bits.

Asus warns that their DVI connector does not support the common dongles
that convert DVI to RGB for analog monitors, and that you cannot use the
VGA port and TV-Out ports simultaneously. This is odd, but probably not
an issue for htpc use. The MSI board probably has the same restrictions
 - I'm guessing it's a chipset thing.

athlon64 processors are as quiet as you make 'em. My 2-year-old 3500+
runs quite cool, so it should be possible to make a very quiet,
feature-rich system with either of these boards.

They both retail for about $90. The cheapest AM2 sempron is about $40
and may or may not be enough for HDTV. the cheapest full athlon64 is
about $85, and is certainly enough for HDTV. The cheapest dual-core
athlon64 is about $150 and probably massive overkill.

Other motherboard makers may have similar boards. Looks like good
 hardware to me.

Asus is a recurrent offender with GPL licence issues - convicted once and
under investigation for at least two more.

Should you support them with your money?

All decent amp's have spidf or optical sound inputs. This also
reduces the need for wiring and makes wiring longer distances *heaps*
easier.

The Asus board bellow is the only one of the two have that..

It's actually not too bad and there's always ways to slow the fan
down. I'm currently twiddling with the BIOS settings to try to make
the fan slower. And I'm trying to get info from ASUS to add support
for hwmon...

The only issue I've run into so far is with the PCI slots. My
PVR-150MCE didn't fit, it was too tall. I had to shave 2mm off to make
it fit :-)

hmm, not familiar with that one. I'll have to give it a look some
day. Maybe next summer. I have got the powernow-k7 code working, but
it's kinda unnecessary.

Like i said several posts back, I have a swiftech mcx462-v heatsink
on top of a mobile 1600. The heatsink weighs over 23 ounces - if i clock
down to 1ghz i can run it fanless. But i can't hear the sanyo-denki fan,
so i run it at 1.4ghz.

I admit i went to extreme measures, but i kinda like how it turned
out.

In the case of AMD cpu's there are some *cool (vcool, fvcool) tools
around that will force the cpu in sleep mode and fire it up if needed.
I use it on my old athlon 1333 cpu with an Zahlmann cooler with big very
slow turning fan.
case temp is around 30 celcius and I can't hear it over 1m. distance.

Unfortunately, if you want it to be fully integrated, that gets
tricky.

The microatx board i was referring to is the Biostar GeForce 6100-M7.
The audio codec is the exact same VIA chip as you get on an EPIA, so it
doesn't meet my own requirements there. The integrated video is VGA
only. If you have an HD display, it might have a VGA input. If you need
TV-out, it isn't there.

It's surprisingly hard to find a non-EPIA motherboard with tv-out.

I'm using an Asus A7V-880 with an athlon xp mobile, matrox g400, and
quiet fans and drives. a little later today I'm receiving a (free)
shuttle m2000 settop, but i have no idea how ideal it is for linux.
