Re: OS X or OS 9
From: Jen Loewen [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: OS X or OS 9 [snip] Is it worth her while (and mine as I have to help her set everything up and show her how it works) to run in OS X or should she just stick to OS 9? This is always a matter of personal opinion. It would be my opinion to go with OS X. Perhaps the biggest reason I say this is because OS X is the future, and the Ti Book is very capable of running OS X very well. The bulk of Classic Applications will run well in the Classic environment of OS X, so even settling into OS X does not mean one looses old favorites. It does appear that many commercial applications are taking the opportunity to charge for upgrades, but a great deal of the shareware applications that have always been a good deal are providing OS X updates for free. OS X also provides an excellent opportunity to reexamine ones software needs and usage. I found with OS X, that many things I was just sure I had to have I really do not. Many utility programs I kept and maybe even used from time to time, are either provided as part of OS X (telnet) or just found I no longer really needed (SpellTools). One gentleman posted that he decided to see if he could use his FileMaker databases in AppleWorks, was surprised that they moved over just fine, and was delighted that he did not even need to upgrade to an OS X version of FileMaker. I purchased PhotoShop many years ago. The output from imaging devices was poor, and most image editors were not that powerful. My current digital camera produces excellent images, and the shareware tools (Graphic's Converter) easily have enough features to meet all my needs. So in those examples one maintains useability without a huge expense. So unless there is some commercial need or hardware restriction that prevents one from using OS X, I would suggest that one move to OS X. -- \/\/i||i@^^ ()\/e -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... As far as video editing, iMovie is great for non-professionals and Final Cut Pro 3 gets raves for pros. If it's truly a new TiBook, i.e. capable of utilizing the new rendering features of FCP 3, the ability to run FCP 3 in OS X is a reason to use X instead of 9 (PS6 be damned!). As far as writing goes, Word 2001 works fine in Classic (although is this the one with a cut-paste problem?), while AppleWorks 6 is Carbon, so it runs equivalently in X and 9. E-mail is more of a joy to use in X, imo. Web browsing is satisfactory in X, but RealPlayer (which I detest, but must use occasionally) doesn't play nice with OS X browsers (and no news about an OS X port/plug-in). However, if you don't have much experience in X, she's probably going to come to you with any problems, so that should also have some influence on your decision. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Replacing the backup battery is about as hard as installing additional RAM; the backup battery is under the keyboard, right next to the hard drive. There's no real procedure to it; you unplug it and pull it out. It's the black and amber pack right between the hard drive and the right-hand palm rest, it's connector is next to the right side screw for the shield that goes over the processor card. I've yet to encounter a battery that RadShack didn't have in stock, or at least could get for me within a reasonable amount of time. I've never asked about powerbook lithium batteries though. That being said, the backup battery is fairly easy to replace. You basically pop up the keyboard and it's on the right side, easy to remove. I would suggest you check with PowerBook Parts for a replacement battery http://www.pbparts.com/. BTW, what makes you think that your backup battery has to be replaced? When completely discharged, I've read somewhere in Apple documentation that the PowerBook has to be plugged in the AC for at least 24 hours before the backup battery will be fully recharged (yes, that's a rechargeable battery). The best guide to walk you through the steps required to service your Pismo is the PowerBook (FireWire) Service Manual from Apple. Re: Wallstreet keyboard problem
From: John Featherstone [EMAIL PROTECTED] I'm having problems getting my Mac PowerBook G-3 (Wallstreet) 300... Also on my key board, the pg down key is loosing its spring back or recoil. It slips down, and when I slip something under it and lift it up it stays in the up position for awhile, and then drops back down after hard use. Is there an easy fix, outside of a new keyboard? John Have you had the key off recently? I had a niece remove the Fn key and lost the little spring, then the key wouldn't return. The spring that returns the key is actually made of resilient plastic. Someone (from this list I think) sent me a few spare springs, I might be able to find one and send it to you if that is your problem. If you haven't had the key off have you removed/replaced the keyboard? My PB 520 is quite particular about having the keyboard seated correctly or the keys in the corner would a stick. Last possibility is gunk under the key, gently pry the key up, first left side then right. See if there's anything obvious under there and if the little spring is missing (it's pink on my wallstreet). Re: How to change/choose printers in 'classic' under OS X?
I've only done this twice, but if I remember correctly you just have to go to the Chooser while you're in Classic and choose the printer you want to use. So, while in the Classic application you're using, go to the Apple menu, and the chooser should be available to use there. I'm pretty sure that worked for me. Good luck, Philip I'm now using a new iBook at work. While its a bit of a hassle to find/capture/choose printers at each new location (four different buildings on a regular basis), this does not seem to affect the printer that 'classic' applications want to use. They are still looking for the first printer I set up, on the first day of use...even if its in a different building and not available on the building net in the other four buildings. I don't find any way to choose a new printer for the 'classic' applications. Has anyone figured out how to make this work? Re: [OT] OS X privileges help
Marty Lindower wrote: Hi all- I realize that this is totally OT, but my problem is huge and my time is short. As proof that a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, I have somehow locked myself out of my Applications folder on OS 10.1.3. It started last night, when I noticed that even though I'm set up as admin on my computer, I couldn't install or move any files into my Applications folder (this was new - no problems prior to yesterday). Today, I launched SuperGetInfo, and found that admin group was not set to have write privileges for the folder. I tried to change the privileges and apply the changes to all the folders inside, but came back with an error. I then tried to change the owner of the folder to marty (my login), hoping that I'd then be able to regain privileges. That caused me to be denied all access to Applications entirely. I called Apple, and after a bit of work, they said that since I can't access my utilities like Terminal (since they're in Applications), I'd have to back up, reformat and reinstall. I can't reinstall X, since the CD has 10.1.1 and the Mac has 10.1.3. Other than: 1) finding someone with a Firewire HD w/OS X to plug in, boot up and fix from there, or 2) buying a new HD, installing X on it and fixing my old drive from there, does anyone have any ideas? TIA (and vowing NEVER to mess with Unix again), Well, it'll require messing with Unix again...but this might work, and save you loads of time. Boot into single user mode by holding the 's' key during startup. This brings you to an interface like that in Terminal, without any GUI. You should be able to get into your user directory and set the permissions properly. You may need to type 'sudo' at the command prompt without any command after (that puts you into superuser mode until you exit) and enter your administrators password at the prompt before you can do that, if you changed the ownership of the files. This does illustrate something VERY important, and imo, something very problematic about OSX. 1) Unix is a power tool, and like any power tool, without proper care and attention to detail, you can have some amazingly gruesome accidents. 2) Apple's tech support DESPERATELY needs Unix training. This is fixable if you get into the single user mode AND know the unix commands to use. We do NOT need to get into the Windows crap of 'Oh something is broken, just re-install the system.' (if it's just that you need read/write/execute rights to your applications directory its: chmod -R u+rwx directory name CHange MODe changes the permissions on a file. -R (recursively, ie all the files and directories under the target) u (the user who owns them now...if you do ls -l, you will see which user owns the files. The other options for this part are 'o' for Others, and 'w' for World) +rwx (Add Read, Write, eXecute priveleges) There are other ways of setting the priveleges using a numeric code, but that's unecessarily 'olde tymie Geek' for me. Another command you may need to know is 'chown' for CHange OWNer, if you made your applications folder owned by another user...you DEFINITELY need to be in superuser mode (the sudo comand) If you want to be careful you can just do the commands in single line sudo mode sudo chmod u+rwx etc. You'll be asked for your administrator password each time. Thanks Bruce- Actually, tech support DID try to help this way, but for some reason, holding down S during boot didn't get me into single user mode - just got to my usual login screen. And, it was sudo chmod and chown that I tried in the first place, and I strongly suspect that's what messed me up so badly. I'll try again, but may resort to adding a new HD - first for fixing this problem, then to hold backups and mp3's. At 3:06 PM -0500 3/19/02, Laurent Daudelin wrote: I don't understand. Re: QueFire, CDRW not recognized on my Wallstreet using
I'm a little late on responding to this as I've been out of town. But in case you're still having the problem here's my 2ยข. I have the Que 4/8/32 (I think) and have also had problems with the computer seeing the drive. I use it with a Beige G3 desktop with an Orange Micro firewire pci card and with a pismo. Both computers will sometimes not recognize the drive. It doesn't work more than half the time with the beige, and I would say 25% of the time with the pismo. I haven't been able to figure it out, but I suspect the problem is with Que. Re: Pismo internal backup battery
Where's the best place to get the internal (PRAM) battery for a Pismo? Does Radio Shack carry an equivalent? Secondly, has anyone ever replaced one? Is it difficult? Anybody have any web links to the documented procedure? I highly doubt that you would find that battery at Radio Shack. These are pretty much custom made. These batteries are 'dual' (i.e. two in one). But they're simply 2 5300/190/1400 batteries in a single casing. I successfully used a 5300 PRAM battery in my Lombard (same PRAM as Pismo/Wallstreet). The lower power of the 5300 battery means it won't last as a PRAM battery alone for long [i.e. _without_ the AC or main battery installed, while in sleep mode], but works fine as a normal PRAM battery. The issue is also cost - $30-$40 for a Lomb/Piz PRAM v. $3 for a 5300 PRAM (that's what I paid for mine). Nevertheless, the OP should look at recharging their PRAM - takes 24-48 hours of the 'Book plugged in. You can use the Airport software to setup a machine as a Software Base Station, as opposed to purchasing a Hardware Base Station.
