If you are interested in an external, I just read about a new external drive
from OtherWorld computing that is a essentially a Superdrive. Here is a
quote from the source:

"(OWC) has introduced the Mercury Pro DVD-R/RW, CD-R/RW FireWire solutions.
They're the first external FireWire solutions that let you author and burn
DVDs using Apple's DVD authoring tool, iDVD, according to Larry O'Connor,
president of OWC. "

There is a problem with older G3 computers, the Lombard and the Wallstreet,
among others, where if OS X is not installed on the first 8 GB of the hard

BIG HEADS UP RE 10.2 UPDATE

2002-07-29 Thread MikkiWokk

The Mac OS X up-to-date program, whereby you can get 10.2 for $19.95 plus tax
HAS NOW BEEN EXPANDED. Initially this applied only to those purchasing a
computer on or after July 17. The program now also includes purchases of a
10.1.3 retail box (you must provide proof of purchase) on or after July 17. A
separate form is provided on Apple's website. If the site is an indication,
this may apply only to those in the U.S.

The link is http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

I suggest you reinstall 10.1, enter account name as "root" or
"administrator" when your Mac restarts automatically, then do the

else. Any slight deviation from what OSX expects is a fault (think of

OSX upgrade install problem

2002-07-29 Thread richard.lowrey

Hello All, I am new to Mac and OSX and having a problem when trying to
upgrade from 10.1 to 10.1.3

Whenever I try to install the 10.1.3 upgrade it states I need the installer
upgrade, however, when I try to
install upgrade installer, it states installer upgrade already installed.

It may be something simple that I am not doing, however, I installed the
upgrade to airport and Appleworks without any problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Richard

MS Office thesaurus problem

2002-07-29 Thread pat murray

I have Office both for system 9 and OSX but on neither does the thesaurus
work. I checked and have what seems to be all that is required as far as
installed thesaurus and dictionary but it keeps returning a message saying
couldn't find English dictionary. I have both the UK dictionary and the US
dictionary installed. Any ideas what is wrong?

Atta guys, & thanks

2002-07-29 Thread James Rohde

Sure I'd like it if Ryan, Dan et al. didn't have to put the notices about
LEMLists e-mail in a couple or three times a month. But it's not a major
annoyance by any means, and well worth it for the planned improvements
(not bouncing, minimizing those "did you want to unsubscribe?" spammer
things, etc.). I expect that once they get implemented and LEMLists get
switched over, it will be even better being on these lists!

For me, there are advantages of both .mac (still weighing my decision on
renewing there) and LEMLists e-mail boxes. I may even end up getting one
of each, depending on the final factors which sway me at last!

But thanks to Dan, Ryan, Laurent and everyone else who helps keep this
list going for the Rest of Us...

Thanks,

Jim Rohde

This wouldn't be that big of an issue for me (if I used programs
expecting that second button), as there are lots of mice available with
single or two buttons. I almost bought a small (single-button) mouse at
Staples recently just for having a mouse, and I don't think it cost that
much. There are several USB mice which work great out of the box on my
Pismo, whether mechanical or optical tracking.

Personally, I don't use PCs that much (for two programs at work only),
and find it more bother to recall the uses for that second button. For
me, it's "simpler is better" (less to keep track of - like simpler
interfaces and program design, as well).

I agree with you on the features Apple should exploit (wakeup, sleep,
etc.) in their commercials. Hadn't realized Wintel laptops took that long
to wake up (more like resurrect, perhaps)... ;-)

Re: iTunes and burning Q

2002-07-29 Thread James

IN OS X no there is nothing other than itoons that is
free there are other commercial MP3 Players that can
but cost money. You can use the Toast audio extractor
to extract the tracks to you hard drive and write
them. Disk burner is so limited that is why i do not
use it. If u do alot of CD Writing or coping Toast is
the best way to go. I write everything in toast do not
use disk burner since i find it too slow and itoons
too choppy in writing CD and it does not sound as
nice. I wrote mp3 CD via itoons and it was not as good
sound quility as toast and itoons version had problems
reading on my home DVD MP3 CD player, Toast version
did not. Toast i have or feel i have control over
makin a CD. Up to you but if you want professional
sounding CDs itoons is not the choice i would rather
SoundJam MP in OS 9.2.2 to write CD than itoons
Maybe newer updates will come to par with the quaility
of SoundJam MP who knows Itoons 3 is better but not
perfect

That would be a true G4, but remember that your system bus, where most
information has to go between the memory and processor, would still run at
66MHz, so that would clearly be a bottleneck. You still stay with the same
video card, which has only 4 MB of VRAM. So, a true G4 yes, but certainly
not the performance you would expect from a G4 Titanium...

Sorry that this is a bit 'after the fact' - but I would like to
eulogise about a product introduced to me by a puppet maker - Zip
Kicker is a superglue catalyst. It's available under different brands
but that's the one I know. You can get the same result as epoxy in
seconds! Spot of glue in the head, drip of catalyst on the driver,
bring them together and an exothermic 3 seconds pause gives a solid
fusion. You get multiple chances with fresh applications.

Brilliant get out of trouble stuff!
