Re: Pismos fry lid-down!
I ran my 2000 powerbook for about month with external monitor and USB Keyboard and mouse adn it workd fine actually ran cooler! I did notice that the fan would kick in only with the cover closed it was a little humming sound but you get used to it but is not as loud as my Dual G4 which has three fans that is a bit more noisey as there is one for processors the central fan on one on the ATI 8500 so the little fan noise on the powerbook is hardly noticable to me = Israeli politics, as such, was and remains a busy street. Re: thin protective cover for Wallstreet?
Jeff Lentz at 8/9/02 wrote something like: Think wetsuit. I got myself a PowerBook 2000 wetsuit-like bag from macimports.com, maybe 2 years ago. Mine's just black wetsuit material with a thin plastic window on the top to match the curves of my Pismo (and you can see the white Apple logo). The entire thing is zippered on 3 edges, and has elastic straps that hook onto the corners of a laptop such that you can open and use a laptop without taking off the bag. I have to vouch for this setup. I carry my Pismo in backpacks, in motorcycle hardbags, and in the handlebar-mounted basket of my bicycle. The cover is just thick enough that it's more like a sleeve. I can stuff one or two small items (like a power supply) inbetween the laptop and the sleeve if I need to. Probably the best thing about the wetsuit containers is that they become part of your laptop. If I'm on the road, in a coffee shop, or at a friend's house, I just zip open the sleeve and go to work. When I'm done, the entire ensemble is barely bigger than just the laptop, so I *can* stuff it into a backpack, under a car seat, or on a book shelf. Finally, I don't have to worry about all the crap that accumulates in the bottom of my backpack/car floor/living-room somehow seeping into my pismo. Stay tuned for future product endorsements! thin protective cover for Wallstreet?
I've been real happy with Eagle Creek's computer vault. http://www.eaglecreek.com/travel_accessories/40126.html Padded. My Pismo fits with room to spare. Can fit in a few extra files, disks, magazines, cables, batteries, etc which is useful when I don't want to tote the briefcase/backpack along. I stitched on a shoulder strap from another bag. (One could even make a backpack strap rig) Just slit the seams, insert the webbing (heat seal the end of the webbing), and stitch away for professional results. Really like the top load configuration. Makes it impossible for the computer to drop out of the bag due to zipper failure/zipper operator error. Found this rig real useful at airport security. Keeps one from extracting the puter from more complicated luggage, and yet will fit in large briefcases, travel bags and backpacks... Their computer safe also looks interesting. Is a little smaller than the vault, and has attachment rings for a shoulder strap. Side and top access. http://www.eaglecreek.com/travel_accessories/40125.html F. From: Matthew D. MacStumbler: Need some lobbying for warwalking software
I've been emailing korben, author of open source MacStumbler, and offering him money and he has so far resisted me. What follows is his reply that I apologize for cross-posting. I think the need for a good 8.x and 9.x MacStumbler is worthy of a moon shot effort. How do we do this? None of the MacStumbler code is portable over to OS 9, it's all cocoa (objective-c) and the airport API under OS 9 is probably completely different. Since I know almost nothing about programming under OS 9 and since I never use it myself, I'm not planning on ever making an OS 9 version of MacStumbler. There is another app you can try called AP Scanner, you can find it at http://homepage.mac.com/typexi/Personal1.html . I don't mind if you put the idea of a port out there, but keep in mind none of the code will translate over, writing a port means starting from scratch. Also, the MacStumbler code is released under the GNU Public License (GPL) which basically means any project based on it's code must also publish it's code pubically, and may not charge a fee for distributing it. So if someone writes a program based on some of MacStumbler's code, they can't charge for it. I may end up fooling around with stuff in OS 9 and maybe create something halfway functional, but I don't like to give any guarantees. That's mainly the reason I decided not to ask for any money for MacStumbler, I'm just a student and I don't have a lot of time to support people who feel they're entitled to updates, etc because they payed money. -korben Is there some one who can do a MacStumbler for us? dh -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Solutions to Applications reinstall on Tibook ...
Original Post ... Hi: In an attempt to get OS X to see my Laserwriter Select 360, I zero'd out my HD, partitioned it into 5 gig for OS9 25 for OS X and have reloaded the OS's. Unfortunately, when I go to the print center it still tells me Appletalk isn't active and won't find my printer. However, another problem has come up. Since I reloaded the OS's directly and didn't use the software reinstall CD's, now I've lost Snapz Pro and Faxstf that was included with the factory install on the HD. Does anybody know how I can dig in and access these items to install from the reinstall CD's? Thanks Solutions: #1 - I had an Applications CD enclosed with the set of CD's I rec'd with the Tibook. I didn't even notice it until later on ... yes, I'm a dunce. #2 - Had some ongoing conversation with Tony Jayms (thanks Tony) and we compared notes on what we had both rec'd with our Tibooks (he indicated he didn't get an Apps CD). #3 - Had some suggestions about using (Tomeviewer on sys OS 9, and Pacifist for view .pkg files on OS X). The author of Pacifist Charles Srstka gave me a considerable amount of help in answering questions about what I was attempting to do ... I can't really vouch for his software package, but as far as him responding to questions ... he was great. I would assume that his software is equally as good as his email skills. It is a $20.00 shareware cost for a package that may really help save the day if you want to do a specific install. What I did was install Snapz Pro from the Apps CD and upgraded to the full version from Ambrosia software for $19.00 through their special Apple bundled upgrade price. Even though I reinstalled OS 9 and OS X on separate partitions and have run all updaters, I still am back to my original problem of not being able to print wirelessly through an OS X 10.1.5/Asante Aerolan setup to a LaserWriter Select 360. It tells me Appletalk is enable in my network prefs, but when I go to find the printer in print center, it tells me Appletalk isn't active. Hopefully, Jaguar will take care of this ... Re: Pismos fry lid-down!
I wouldn't do it with my TiBook. I have run it using Photoshop and other apps that take make the box hot, and when I was done put it to sleep and closed the lid. I can see the keyboard and trackpad on my screen now (and not the same marks from your finger oils that come). Todd The Lombard/Pismo were specifically redesigned to circumvent this requirement. I've run the Lombard for days on end connected to an external with the lid closed. The much hotter TiBooks do this as well. Cheers, RD -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Stickies in OS X
Hi all, How can I get Stickies to launch at startup in OS X in the same way it does in OS 9? I don't see any preference to set that'll do it. I've just been re-opening Stickies each time I log in, and my saved notes are there, but I'd like it to automatically open instead.
