For that kind of outlay I think I'd get myself a newer PowerBook.
There's a screen on ebay UK, one can't help pondering the
possibilities. Oh well.

Cheers.

Re: Firewire2Go ??

2002-10-30 Thread Luis Sequeira
I use a Firewire2Go with my Wallstreet and it works with both OS 9.1
and 10.2.1.
In OS 9.1, I have used it intensely with a digital camcorder and it
never failed; but I could not use it to burn CDs with a Firewire CDRW
drive (Toast kept saying that it could not write to the drive fast
enough - even at 1x).
In 10.2.1, I have not tried the camcorder yet, but just for the hack
of it, I tried burning a CD at 24x and it worked like a charm.

Hi, All.

Undergoing a frantic effort to get my Cardbus Firewire2Go card to
work with my Lombard Powerbook. In both OS 9.2 and X.2 my card is
'seen' by Apple System Profiler, but I can't mount my LaCie
pocketdrive through it, even though it's independently powered. The
same drive works fine hooked up to my G4's built-in firewire port.
I've applied Newer's special 'enabler' patch (v1.01) for OS 9 (and
removed Apple's cardbus enabler extension, as indicated by NewerTech
faq), but it still doesn't want to mount in 9.2 Likewise, wondering
if anyone's gotten the card to work in OS X Jaguar. Any help would be
greatly appreciated. TIA.

Re: upgrading expansion VST bay drives

2002-10-30 Thread Andrew Main
Hal [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Has anyone had any experience opening up the VST expansion bay hard
drives (pismo/lombard version in particular) and installing a larger
hard drive?

Yes, but I cheated: I got a VST case from a guy who had already
opened it up, very tidily, and provided full instructions. A year or
so ago when a VST Exp Bay HD went thru my hands (with a PowerBook I
was working on) I noted that it didn't seem to be easily openable; I
emailed VST/SmartDisk about it, and was told that they didn't
support user upgrades.

Then a few months ago SmartDisk had a big closeout sale on their VST
Exp Bay stuff; I was too late to get anything useful, but soon
noticed a lot of them appearing on eBay, in particular from one
dankephoto, who'd apparently bought up a lot of VST Exp Bay HDs,
taken them apart, and was selling the cases and HDs separately for a
tidy profit.

Well, I can't argue with such an entrepreneurial spirit, and the guy
was very up-front with description/explanation and offered plenty of
clear photos. After being outbid on one or two, I went ahead and
Bought It Now, figuring I was willing to pay a premium for having the
job made easy for me. Which it was; I now have a 20GB Travelstar in
it.

I thought he'd have sold all his stock by now, but recently noticed
he has another for sale:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=2064939681
Check out his excellent assembly instruction page at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/dankephoto/ebay/sdbay/
(Go to this page in iCab and you can save it to disk complete to open
any time you need it.)

If you have your own case and want to open it up, this should supply
all the info you need. Note in particular that the four screws that
attach the drive to the case are hidden by the vinyl cover on the
bottom of the case; dankephoto did a nice job of uncovering the screw
heads with little circular cutouts. My only caveat: some of the case
screws screw into plastic, so can easily be stripped; be careful with
them, and don't plan on opening the case too many times, it's
obviously not designed for it.

Re: Lombard battery

2002-10-30 Thread Greg Gilmore
The battery on my wife's Lombard will not charge. I assume the adapter's OK
because the computer will run on it. Is this assumption wrong? Might there
be some way to solve the problem short of replacing the battery?

The problem is likely either the battery or the charging circuitry in the
computer. I suggest that you see if the battery will charge in the other
battery bay. Also, try the battery in another computer and try a known good
battery in your computer. This should help you isolate the fault.

 Paul

Thanks for the advice, Paul. Seeing if the battery would charge in the other
bay was something that hadn't occurred to me. It didn't help, however, and
I'm assuming the battery's shot. Do not have access to other Lombards or
their batteries where I am. Guess I just need to buy a new battery.

Titanium IrDA

2002-10-30 Thread Matthew B. Dwyer
Listers,

I¹ve been using my PB G4 550 for several months, no problems. I upgraded to
Jaguar a month or so ago, still good. A week ago I sync my new Handspring
Treo to my Titanium via IrDA, all good. Problem is that ever since that
sync, my IrDA won't turn off. The icon in the menu bar flashes constantly,
as if looking for another IrDA device. When I go to the IrDA menu to shut it
off, it won¹t.

Any ideas? This problem does not affect the PB¹s functionality, but I figure
it¹s bad for battery life.

Thanks!

Hi Hal,
It's a fairly simple procedure to do. There are a handful of screws that
yo'll ned to remove to open the case, once it's open you have easy access
to the drive to swap out as you wish. I had documented the procedure when
I sold a case, let me know if you need them and I can send the pictures

Slightly OT: Scanning Software Question

2002-10-30 Thread Sam Strong
Hi All -

Got a software question for you. My wife wants to use an Epson 1200photo
scanner with her Pismo running 9.1. She already has it set up with Omnipage
pro to do text and really likes it. She needs to scan photo's, tables,
images now and we are looking for a nice and simple scanning program to use
with the scanner and 9.1. She will mostly be scanning
pictures/charts/graphs from documents and pasting them in other Appleworks
documents (she's a teacher). We think that even PhotoDeluxe is overkill for
this and puts too many extentions, etc on the PB. Before you suggest
upgrading to OS X and using the very nice and simple to use image capture
program that comes with it, please be assured that I have suggested this and
it is not an option for her at this point.

So does anyone know of a simple scanning program for saving images that's
compatible with 9.1, simple to use, and twain compliant for the Epson 1200
Perfection Photo scanner? Any help would be much appreciated and would help
immensely in making me look good in this situation!

Not quite sure of what you mean by sharing, but in OS X.2 if you open the
Sharing panel in system preferences you can set up just about any
combination you want, as long as the volume (external hard drive) is mounted
on the desktop, you should be able to connect to the machine over the

This might depends on what privileges you have from the server, the Mac

that's why I think there might be some permissions issues here...

The Epson should have come with twain drivers, or Photoshop plug-ins:
she could use Graphic Converter http://www.lemkesoft.com which should
acquire images fine using either.

If the Epson softwre isn't working for some reason (there should have

If you work out of PhotoShop LE (should have come with the scanner) you will
be set up to do everything you asked about.
I use PhotoShop 7 with my Epson Perfection Scanner and I works great!

Re: S key being difficult, help, also on s key

You should check that the keyboard is down and the tabs are locked, as this
can make keys work in a strange way if it isn't locked firmly in place.

Tom

*Every* *day* a different key is sticky on my Pismo and it drives me
nuts! By far the worst case was when the space bar was sticking. I'm
sure you can imagine how that would destroy one's typing speed. I find
that if I just press the key a little harder than usual, it will make a
 click, then stop sticking. Sometimes.

You can't use a Finder copy to do it because there are some hidden files
that are owned by root. Your only recourse is CarbonCopy Cloner.

you cannot merely copy an OS X System; there's too much stuff that's
linked to other stuff, and hidden files that wouldn't get copied.

however, CarbonCopyCloner will do the job.

Rage Pro fix for Lombard

What is the status of video acceleration of the Bronze (Lombard)
powerbook under Jaguar. I applied the fix program to the machine when I

built into Jag? Does the program RagePro Fix for Lombard work with 10.2
or do I have to do it manually? If so, how?

thanks for any replies!

Thanks to all who answered. Judging from the reports of those who
responded, it looks like my particular drive/card combo is the
culprit. Unfortunately, I don't have another firewire device to test
with the card at this point in time. I'll soon have a firewire burner
to check the operation of the card, hopefully this will verify the
card's operation. Either way, it sounds like I might benefit from a
visit to eBay or the lem swap list, and pick up one of the
recommended cards for OS X. I'll drop a line here again once I've
confirmed whether the card is operational or not. Thanks again.

Should Wallstreet wake when lid is opened?

2002-10-30 Thread Mark
I've been having a number of problems with the PowerBook G3 Wallstreet I
recently aquired. Mostly having to do with sleep issues. However I realized
another peculiar thing.

When I close the lid it goes to sleep as it should. However when I lift the
lid it doesn't wake up. The sleep light continues to blink. I have to hit a
key to wake it up.

Shouldn't it wake up when you lift the lid?

I tried once again to install Jaguar but got the same results. To be honest
I'm using copies of my original Jaguar but as I said, they work fine on my
other machines. Perhaps it doesn't like the CDR media but if that were the
case, it wouldn't even mount to the desktop. Plus it's the same CDR media I
use to make copies of my OS9.2.1 and OSX.1.3 install CDs.

Also, when I hold down the option key at startup to get a selection of
drives/OSs to choose from (ie. OS9 or OSX or install CD etc.), it doesn't
 work.

Is there maybe a firmware update I should look for, for the Wallstreet?

Not sure about what is wrong. There might be something wrong with the CD-ROM
drive itself. Did you try booting with your original Jaguar CD?

BTW, the option key at startup won't work because there is no firmware in
 the Wallstreet.

Well, I got Jaguar installed from my original CDs. Guess the Wallstreet's
CD-ROM drive didn't like the media I copied to (even though the copy worked
in my iBook just fine).

But it still won't wake from sleep properly. Adjusting brightness (via the
control under the screen) doesn't work nor does zapping PRAM, resting power
manager, trading out the memory (twice), switching settings while in OS9.2.2
etc. etc. blah, blah, blah.

Guess I'll wipe the whole thing and install OS9.1. This will at least let me
know if it's a hardware or OS issue.
