Wallstreet G3 Sleeping/ Power Up Issue

2003-02-05 Thread Matthew Grant
Hello. I purchased a Powerbook G3/233 second hand and I am having a
small problem. When the mac goes to sleep and I hit the esc key to wake
it up,the fan comes on very loudly and will not wake up unless I unplug
it and reset the PMU key. Sometimes I plug in the power cord and the
fan comes on and will not boot. I have reset the PMU also several times
for it to boot normally. The seller replaced the PMU before he sold it.
I dont have a battery to test it. Could the backup battery be acting up?
I would appreciate any help to remedy this before I just pack it up and
throw it on ebay.

Re: Odd TiBook question

2003-02-05 Thread Hal
That was my thought. I opened it up and installed an Airport card and
swapped in a new hard drive already. I'm just wondering how much
tougher the optical drive swap is. I just got the tech doc, but it's
written as if you are installing a new service part, so there are some
adjustments to be made. I'll post a follow-up note if I end up doing
the surgery...

Having just read over the Service Manual entry for the TiBook (GE)'s
DVD-ROM, it looks like the optical drive in the TiBook is a very
fragile creature. I would only attempt this surgery if you both a) have
experience inside the TiBook (my experience ends at tearing down a
13.3" Wallstreet) and b) have the illustrated tear-down guide so you
know exactly what to do in what order.

I personally hope I never have to take my baby (a TiBook 667 DVI) apart.

I second the recommendation on the Travelstar. i put in a 40GNX in
about 10 minutes. All you need is a Torx T-8 and a phillips head

Any slim form factor 2.5" drive should work fine. I put a 20gig in my
Pismo last year. Personally, I recommend Travelstars, I have found
them to be very quiet and highly reliable.

As for the installation, it's not too difficult, and when I did it,
there were numerous sites with how-to instructions. Doing this does
invalidate your Applecare, if it is still covered.

You'll need a torx screwdriver set, I don't remember which size. Sorry.

a corresponding one with an earlier date. That was a turn-off as I'd always
modified data, or feared that I had, on each Mac.
But I tried it on on Palm. To test, I put a unique character in each of two
matching
records, and synched, expecting to lose at least one of them. But Voila!
Now each volume sported two new records - created especially to preserve
its correspondent with the added character - as well as backups of the
"un-charactered"
record on each volume. Now it's left up to me to delete what I determine to be
superfluous.
That's the way it works on Palm - better than "back-up."
But I have no idea about Mac. What's the deal?

I thought it was relatively simple. The only trick is you need a torx
screwdriver. Over in the USA the IBM Travelstar GNX (5400 rpm) is just $130,
so why go any smaller than 40 MB?

I am currently upgrading my Pismo right now. I had previously added
additional Ram and a larger (40 GB) hard drive and installed Jagaur. (In my
case I installed everything on the hard drive without partitioning; I saw no
need for them and felt they added a complication I could live without.) As
for the upgrade I am using these guys <
http://www.powerlogix.com/products2/bcg4pismo/index.html > to do mine. I
didn't have to send them the whole deal, just the processor daughter card.
I'm an old Navy Electronics Technician so I'm comfortable working inside my
Pismo. If you don't feel comfortable doing this sort of thing yourself;
there are a couple of places you can send the whole unit to and they will do
it for you, just do a Google search for Pismo upgrades. I went with the
change to 500 MHZ G4 instead of the 800 MHZ G3 because I have a G4 Desktop
now that is rock solid.I'll post my comments on what I think about it when I
get it back up and running, about a week from now.

Re: upgrade path for Pismo

2003-02-05 Thread Larrie Easterly
Jeff,

I recently upgraded my Lombard to run Jag. Did a memory upgrade first,
192 -->512. Then loaded Jag. This is a great combination. The memory
upgrade was easy, just make sure you buy the memory from a dealer
company that specializes in memory not a general hardware software
supplier. The only place I have noticed a little slowness is in window
resizing.

I am not sure what processor upgrades are available for the Pismo but I
would suggest doing the memory first yourself and then going for the
processor later if you think it is to slow.

Drive partitioning is painless.

I don't think it matters whether you're adding more RAM or a new processor
upgrade before or after. I guess the sooner, the better!

You can go in Mac Help Center, type "partition a disk" and you should get at
least one item that briefly describes what is partitioning a drive. You
basically split your internal hard disk in smaller parts that are seen as
separate disks by the system. I did create 3 partitions on my internal 20 GB
drive: 1 for OS X system, 1 for OS 9 system and the remaining for various
applications. So, if I need to reinstall OS X from scratch, I can easily
initialize its partition and reinstall without messing up with the other 2
partitions.

Something like that. It is when you have a set of documents on one computer
and you want to maintain an exact set of copies of those same documents on
another computer, or another disk. The brute force is to copy all the
documents over. The smart way is to use some kind of synchronization tool
that will be easily able to determine which files have been modified and
will copy only those.

Hackers never use flowcharts, consider them extremely silly, and associate
them with COBOL programmers, card wallopers, and other lower forms of life.
This attitude follows from the observations that flowcharts (at least from a
hacker's point of view) are no easier to read than code, are less precise,
and tend to fall out of sync with the code (so that they either obfuscate it
rather than explaining it, or require extra maintenance effort that doesn't
improve the code). See also PDL, sense 1.

upgrade path for Pismo

2003-02-05 Thread Jeff Abbott
Going through the archive and the recent discussion on putting OS X
on Pismos, I feel fairly confident in installing OS X Jaguar on my
400 Mhz, 320 MB RAM Pismo, that the system can handle it fine.

But if, after adding OS X, I want to add on additional RAM or upgrade
the processor, should one action come before the other? I apologize
if this is a dumb question, but I've never bothered to upgrade a
machine before with more than adding a memory chip and that was years
ago. Or is it best when you send in your system for a processor
upgrade (at MCE or one of the other vendors) to simply have them add
the additional memory at the same time?

Also--I assume the OS X Jaguar box includes instructions on how to
partition a drive, if you've never done it before?

I want the route of least effort and maximum gain. :-)

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: security for Pismo?

Targus offers security devices:

Another possible option is the hotel safe.

security for Pismo?

2003-02-05 Thread Jeff Abbott
Can someone recommend a good security cable for when you're traveling
for a Pismo? Kensington's site lists products suitable for the
Lombard, but not for the Pismo (same case, I guess). I'm looking for
something that would allow me to leave my Pismo in a hotel room with
a bit more confidence.

Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Synchronizing Macs

2003-02-05 Thread Bruce Mitchell
What is meant by "synchronizing Macs"?

Is this a method of automatic back up from each computer to the other?
