If this is an IDE drive it's easy.

You'll need an 2.5" -> 3.5"adapter.
In actual fact you need a laptop to standard IDE adapter. the 2.5" to
3.5" adapter only applies to hard disks. The CD-ROM end of a CD-ROM
adapter is totally different.

Anyhoo just take the drive with you, you should be ok.

Most electronics stores (note, Radio Shack is not an electronics store

will carry them, they cost on the order of $5 or so.

Well, doing a search online, 57 is the country code for Columbia, South

Re: Anyone (esp. in the UK) purchased goods from WegenerMedia??

2003-06-20 Thread Gérard Mittaux-Biron
I reported some problems I had with Wegenermedia some weeks ago.
As I explained later, the main reason came from David's ealth problems
combined with postal problems here in France, I guess. Anyway, after
some mutual explanations, things were quickly solved.
Although it's difficult to have a precise judgement on people
across ocean, the final impression I have is that David is honest, even
if he sometimes has some difficulties. Furthermore, the products I
bought from him were in really good condition at a very interresting
price (compared to what I can get here in France). Last, I believe that
it is a chance we have to have small business companies like
Wegenermedia, even if you sometimes have to face human problems.
 Cordialement.
Gérard.

Sounds like some sort of configuration problem (but you probably already
guessed that, right? :)).

First off, make sure the Airport is configured the same way you configure
your Pismo.

If that looks correct, then check if Yahoo/SBC uses PPPoe. If so, then
you'll need to update your base station firmware to 1.3 for starters.
If that doesn't fix it, then search the Apple support site with both the
"Airport" and "PPPoe" keywords and you'll find lots of articles; but
start here:

for OS 9: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106872>
for OS X: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106747>

Hope this helps,

Re: OT: question regarding DSL modem, Graphite Base station, and pismo

2003-06-20 Thread Tom Roth
Typically you want to power up the cable or DSL modem, wait a minute, then power up
the router (Airport in this case) and wait another minute and then boot up the
computer. Usually the router will get the IP number from the cable/DSL modem and then
in turn act as a mini DHCP server for all connecting computers.

Update on Wegner Media.

2003-06-20 Thread Andrew McCall
Hi People,

Once again I apologise for keeping a thread open on this company, but I
feel I need to keep the list updated so I am not being seen as slurring
the company.

I have finally managed to speak to Dave at Wegner Media, as Bruce
Johnson pointed out, I had been given the international dialing code for
Columbia the country, not Columbia the city in SC. Once I got through
to Dave, he even rang me back so that I wasn't paying for the call -
which I thought was very nice of him!

Dave informed me that the reason for the delay was due to the way the
DVD/CDRW Combo drives are assembled. They order the drives from one
company, the interface to the Pismo from another, and the drive bezel
from another. They are currently waiting for an order of the drive
bezels so hey can complete, then ship my order.

He offered to ship the items they had in stock, and said he would send
out the drive bezel when it does come in stock, however I would prefer
to have a no unit, rather than a half complete unit, so instead he
agreed to ship out to me the Pismo 1Gb RAM kit and replacement rubber
feet (hopefully before the end of today), and then he will ship the
DVD/CDRW drive when its finally complete.

He also stated that they should have an automated emailing system that
informs me of any delays in my order, and that it looks like its not
working.

Basically, I feel a better about dealing with the company now that I
have spoken to them, and I will wait for the deliveries and chase the
DVD/CDRW drive up towards the end of the month.

I have the impression that if I had purchased goods in stock, my
experience of Wegner Media would have been quick and without troubles,
however a combination of goods being out of stock, and a broken mail
system gave me reason for concern.

I would like to thank people on this list for the help and advice given
to bring this closer to a conclusion.

Thanks,

Andrew McCall.

I connect the modem directly into my Pismo, internet access works
fine. When I connect my modem to the graphite Base station, I don't

A while back, several months at least, I recall a thread about a young guy
who sold Macs on eBay and how he got ripped off with a fraudulent money
order for a system. Turned out there was a ring of thieves, buying Macs with
phoney money orders and then reselling them to others. He managed to track
the guy down and got him nailed, maybe this guy slipped through the cracks.

How are you configuring your ABS? Did you look at the Apple website for help
they have several articles on how to set up and configure your network. Try

Did you reset the modem before plugging it into the Base station? Many
cable and DSL modelms 'learn' the hardware ethernet address of the
first device they're plugged into after a reset, and then only work
with that device until reset again.

You may also have to contact SBC about it, especially if you had to
tell them the HW address of your powerbook when the account was set up.

Wegener & PayPal

2003-06-20 Thread Gary
My 20 Cents worth . .

To both concerns I am pleased to report that I have had NO trouble at
all.
PayPal in my view is your friend! Keep the cautions as outlined here
on the list as you wish, or not . . . they've played A-Okay with me
thus far.

I ordered several products from Wegener, and received my orders in
less time and less hassle than from some of the BIG boys out there.
Shipping charges were reasonable, and the products I ordered was as
advertised, and at very reasonable prices.

Have a great day!

Sorry for your loss, I know it's locking the barn after the thieves have
gotten away but as a suggestion to others who may use eBay or one of the
other auction services; for any transaction over a $100 I recommend people
use one of eBay's recommended escrow services and if the seller refuses it
should immediately raise a red flag.

Re: question regarding DSL modem, Graphite Base station, andpismo

2003-06-20 Thread Tom Roth
You probably need to configure the Airport with the correct user id and password.
Most DSL accounts require that. Once you do it the information will be stored in the
Airport and you'll always be "on" according to the DSL modem.

Evidence on the web can be fabricated. I don't believe a word of it. If
anyone got screwed by Paypal I would guess it was because of their own
stupidity. Now let me get back to work. I have to write a long web page
about how ATI screwed me over and verify it with a bunch of lies that I am
making up right now.

Yeah, I work here! I am in the middle of moving home right now (thats
not the reason for the missing delivery though, as family members still
live at the old address), so I have to sort this out using my works
address while ADSL gets installed (in addition to waiting for my
PowerLogix BlueChip G3 900MHz upgrade!) :(

So I should be dialing 0018038084362 ?

That would explain why I can't get through if so.

Andrew.

I got them from the Int. Operator, I said it was Columbia SC, and they
said its 00 57. The 00 is the int. access code, the 57 s the country
code I think.

Wegner Media (was Anyone (esp. in the UK) purchased goods from Wegener Media??)

2003-06-20 Thread Andrew McCall
On Thu, 2003-06-19 at 20:01, Harbourmaster wrote:

> As others here have suggested you should try to ring him up and inquire
> as to the date that your package was shipped.

OK, sorry to keep the thread going, but I have a little update, and I
wanted to get something down in the archives so people just don't read
the bad stuff and just so there is no confusion over my original thread
- I wasn't slurring Wegner Media, I was just asking for opinions on them
due to the lengthy delay of my order, and the emails I have sent but not
had a reply to.

I still haven't had my order, but Wegner Media seems to be an OK company
from most of the responses on this list - albeit a little slow with
deliveries, mainly due to only a small number of staff that work there.

In addition to this since 9/11 overseas deliveries have been
particularly slow.

There is only one more thing I ask - I have tried to phone the company,
and the number on their web site doesn't work for me (or the
international operator) - the number I have been trying to dial from the
UK is:

00 57 803 808 4362

I was just getting a dead tone from my mobile (which now allows overseas
calls), and a pay phone. The int. operator also said that the number
either didn't exist or their was a fault on the line/network.

Can anyone verify that I am dialing the correct number from the UK?

If possible, can anyone nearer, or in Columbia SC actually test the
number for me?

Thanks for all the advice so far - this is one thing that I love about
the Mac community (and in fairness the Open Source Community too) - they
are always willing to help!

Andrew McCall.

UK List members: Did you buy from 'Samsud'?

2003-06-20 Thread Tom Burke
Last autumn there was a chap selling Powermacs on ebay.co.uk, with
(IIRC) the ebay id 'samsud'. It could also have been 'umardegreat', and
that was certainly his email address at that time -
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I bought a 400 Mhz AGP graphics G4 Tower off him
(one of several he was selling). I know he's been very active on
eBay.co.uk, selling Powermacs, Powerbooks and iMacs.

The point of this story is that yesterday I had a visit from Derbyshire
Constabulary, who are investigating the activities of this individual.
They interviewed me to learn about my contacts with him, and also took
details of the Powermac. At the moment I've got still got possession of
it, but I've been told that I mustn't sell it or otherwise dispose of
it.

So if you were a buyer from this person, expect a phone call.

pay-pal

2003-06-20 Thread Kurt Appling
RE;I think that is good advice if you have to use pay-pal for anything
,however they are not covered by the same laws that protect if you use
a bank or credit card.in my opinion just plan on loosing your money
with no real recourse, because you probably will eventually.

As for PayPal, I've had problems with them as well, which resulted in
my account being "frozen" for a year, as I wasn't going to knuckle
under to their extortion. In any controversy, they interpret the
evidence in their favor, i.e. to confiscate and keep your money. (Why
does a dog lick itself? Because it can.) I'd suggest: (1) DON'T ever
keep more than a minimal account balance with them, cause you could
lose it anytime; immediately transfer funds from your PayPal account
to your bank account if you make a big sale. (2) But DON'T give PayPal
access to your bank account; you can link the PayPal account to the
bank account one-way, to transfer funds from the former to the latter,
without allowing PayPal to tap the bank account.

Lowlevel format

2003-06-20 Thread Marc
Is there a utility to lowlevel-format a disk in OSX? I have a
Microdrive I can read (not write or format) on my Pocketpc but not in
my camera or in my Powerbook. it is being recognized by OSX (not
mounted) but not seen by Disk utility. Diskwarrior does see it but
can't test it or anything. I suppose there is maybe a problem I could
fix by formatting it.
