Hi all, Taken my wallstreet on the road for the first time since I installed OSX. Wonderful of course. Only problem is I cant seem to get the infrared port to work to dial up tot he internet using a nokia mobile phone. It used to work fine with OS9.2. Is it the wallstreet, or a config problem? Re: Unreal Tournament on Pismo?
Yes you'll be fine, UT is very CPU dependent, and you have no problems there. Your 8MB will render an excellent 640x480 game and a very good 800x600 game, you'll find you can set the detail levels quite high as-well. For internet play, you might want to knock down the number of players by a couple. That is, if you are talking about the original Unreal Tournament. If you are talking about UT2003, forget it. People with dual 1.25GHz are getting crap frame-rates out of it, hopefully patches will bring it up to speed. Re: Wallstreet OX 10.2.6 Wireless Won't Connect to Internet
- Original Message - From: Robert Benjamin Johnston [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: G-Books [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 22, 2003 6:58 AM Subject: Wallstreet OX 10.2.6 Wireless Won't Connect to Internet To the list: I have sure you have had this question before so please forgive me. I am trying to resurrect an old Wallstreet and it¹s almost ³alive.² I am running OS X 10.2.6 on a Wallstreet with a Newer 466 processor upgrade with 512 of RAM with a Lucent Orinoco Gold Card. My ISP provider is Comcast. I am using a Linksys Router which connects to the cable modem. I have an regular Airport base station connected to the router for my wireless net. My wife¹s G4 is connected directly through the router and accesses the internet just fine. My main laptop is a Pismo with an running OS X 10.2.6 which connects to the internet just fine. Or at least did until I had a head crash on the hard drive, but that¹s another story. I have tried several drivers for the Wallstreet without success. I can connect to the internet with the above setup without any difficulty in OS 9.2.2 with Airport with a great signal using either iCab or Explorer. I installed IOExpert¹s wireless driver and much to my delight it worked. Much to my despair it only worked for a couple of minutes. I had previously uninstalled drivers from SourceForge and MacWireless. The SourceForge driver had a simmilar problem to the one listed below. The MacWireless Driver wouldn't work at all. I uninstalled both the SourceForge and MacWireless drivers.I checked for their files and they¹re all gone. Here is some information that you may find relevant. The IOExperts drivers have installed without a difficulty. When I go to System Preferences and check the information for the driver, the card recognizes the network, with a great signal strength. I cannot connect to the internet via the WiFi card but can connect using the built in ethernet port without problems. I have checked the network preferences and the Wallstreet is getting a dynamic IP address wirelessly. I have removed the router and tried to connect wirelessly directly to the base station which again works fine in OS 9 but not in OS X. I have reset the cable modem without success. I have repaired the permissions on the disk using Apple¹s disk utility repeatedly until their is nothing to repair and again I cannot get it to connect to the internet in Jaguar. In both Camino and Explorer the computer cannot find the site. I have used the Network utility to ping. Again, it works great from my wife¹s computer with is hard wired to the router by an ethernet cable but absolutely will not ping anything wirelessly from the wallstreet. I cannot ping anything on the internet nor can I ping my wife¹s computer wirelessly. If there is some easy fix for all of this please let me know. It¹s particularly frustrating since I¹m getting a strong signal and it managed to connect wirelessly for about ten minutes. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ben How do you have your Airport Base Station configured? Considering your description above; it should only be set up as a bridge to your ethernet network, make sure it is not trying to assign IP addresses. I have a Blue and White G3 with a stock Rage128 video card and it plays fine. However, as far as UT2003 goes, it's not gonna cut it. However, UT2003 has been a total disappointment for me, and I don't think I'm going to spend my money on it. The weapons don't behave as I have gotten used to them, and there is no single-player practice mode that allows you to practice the various types of game play that my buds and I in B0rg Clan play. Namely Capture The Flag. You basically have a ladder story mode thing going on but that's it. Unfortunately UT1999 is not available anymore for Mac. Stupid idiots. You'll have to go on eBay or Yahoo Auctions or somewhere else like that to find your disk. Oh yeah, make sure you update your copy before you try to play online. But once you do, you will be a happy guy. The original is still just fine, thank you. -.\\-H- BubbleVicious[B0rg] or CombatArisa[B0rg] depending on whether I'm playing at home or on a machine other than BubbleVicious, my Athlon XP 1800+ flagship box. -- Michelle Klein-Hass Box 2273, Van Nuys, CA 91404-2273 Spam me and you pay! Re: OT - Sticky' Page elements on eBay?
Tom Burke [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: This is OT as strictly it has nothing to do with Macs per se at all, but I can't think of anywhere else to ask the question. So my apologies, and I ask for your indulgence. I frequent eBay.co.uk. In recent months I;ve noticed a strange phenomenom, in that it can take a very long time for a page to load. I mean minutes. I have an ADSL cinnection, so it's not line speed, and indeed looking at my router during most of the delay there won't be any traffic. I get messages on the status line like this completed 1 of 4 items : 2 errors. The bizarre thing is that this beaviour varies from week to week. Last week, for example, the site was very responsive. Since their weekly Friday morning maintenance shut-down, it's been like treacle. I've tried raising the issue with eBay but with no success at all - they won't even acknowledge it. Furthermore I'm pretty certain it's an external issue - it's the same using both Safari IE on my PowerMac, Safari on the Lombard, and even IE5.5 on a PC laptop. Does anyone else see such behaviour? Anyone got any suggestions as to why it happens? Reply off-list of you'd prefer not to take up list bandwidth. I've seen a similar phenomena on some sites. What I believe is happening is that one or more of the banner ads aren't loading. A number of sites sell space on their web pages to banner ad companies. These are the ads you see for X10 minicams and assorted junque (the ginzu knives of the internet, as it were). Some banner ad companies either oversubscribe their service and/or their server crashes, so the ad never loads or loads so slowly that it times out. Some browsers will display each sublink they're loading along the bottom of the window so you can see what in particular it's trying to load (this is the information you should report to the site's webmaster--if you can get it). Sometimes, if you hit the browser 'stop' button it will display the parts of the page that have loaded (which are often the only parts you're interested in anyway) with a generic icon over the parts that didn't load. This is the one--and probably only--case where popup ads are better: if the 'ad' site is down it won't take the whole referencing page with it. This can be a difficult problem to resolve because sometimes the ad sites work fine from one area but are horribly slow (or unreachable) from another. I think some of the ad sites change domains frequently to outwit software that blocks known ad sites (actually, it doesn't block them; it intercepts them and returns a blank page--so the browser thinks the link has been resolved and displays a blank banner ad), and there can be delays in propagating domain names around the internet. Also, some sites are reluctant to address this problem because they get revenue from banner ads and don't want to bite the hand that feeds them (not fully realizing that that same hand is choking their site to death and rendering it all but unusable). -Jeff[EMAIL PROTECTED] -- You can't brew a premium lager with a kool-aid mentality. --Harold Green in _The_Red_Green_Show_ -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Ram upgrade crashing in OSX Lombard
I tried to post to G-books (for the first time) and it bounced back my message, ill havta figure that one out later. As many as 10% of all of the first 1999 powerbook lombards had (have) a daughtercard that has a faulty chipset. The problems manifest themselves in the RAM upgrades. It has been said that they can only run the original 64 MB ram that shipped with it without trouble. I have one and have been running 192 MB without much trouble, i bought it used from Half.com and only ran into trouble when i tried to add a 256 Mb module. I immediately got severe glitches and program crashes, slow startups etc. etc. It absolutely would not allow me to re-install OSX without failing, untill i put the original ram chips (that came with mine) back in... Its said that the problems get uglier with processor intensive applications, or running more than one application. I am only using mine to get online and dont suffer many problems other than AOL quiting unexpectadly... There is a program that you can download from either the lowendmac websight or xlr8yourmac.com. It runs in OS 9 and will tell you if you have the faulty processor. I originally did a Google search for 'Lombard problems OSX' which led me to the articles about the faulty daughtercards... I can only hope you got bad RAM cause its a cheaper fix than replacing the daughtercard. Battery dead
Well, it looks like one of my Pismo battery is dead, or almost dead. I noticed a few weeks ago that if it would sit on the shelf for a few days, the next time I would put it in my Pismo, I would get the last LED blinking, usually indicating that the battery is depleted. Usually, it would recharge and I would get many 45 min. of juice out of it. Now, I just put it back in and, sure enough, the last LED is blinking. However, Mac OS X 10.2.6 says the battery is charged, although the LED is still blinking. So, it seems it won't recharge anymore. I rebooted in 9 and try Battery Reset 2.0 from Apple, but it said that I didn't need it on my PowerBook model. Any idea on how to reset the battery? If not, I've seen a few places that are selling BatteryTech replacement for my Pismo around $120. Any gotcha or recommendation before I take the plunge? The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Battery Reset got the same response, too. I ended up buying two BTI batteries from MacConnection (with overnight shipping) for a little less than $300. Make sure the batteries at $120 aren't reburbed... but carry the full one-year warranty--that's the only caveat I'd offer. Re: Battery dead
My Pismo Battery is slowly dying, I'm lucky if I get 20 minutes out of it. I bought a new battery from Madsonline for 150$, now I get 4 hours on my Pismo 500/1Gig/40Gig Nick on 6/23/03 5:53 PM, Gary D. Adams at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Battery Reset got the same response, too. I ended up buying two BTI batteries from MacConnection (with overnight shipping) for a little less than $300. Make sure the batteries at $120 aren't reburbed... but carry the full one-year warranty--that's the only caveat I'd offer. Gary Laurent Daudelin wrote: Any idea on how to reset the battery? If not, I've seen a few places that are selling BatteryTech replacement for my Pismo around $120. Any gotcha or recommendation before I take the plunge?
