Problem with PB networking
Hello the list! I've recently treated myself to a 12 PB (just a couple of weeks ago) and I'm having some unexpected problems with networking. I have a small home network with static IP addresses for all machines in the 192.168.0.n range. When using wires, all machines connect to a 3Com hub, which in turn is connected to a D-Link ADSDL router. There's a PC laptop, the new PB, an old (gigabit ethernet) PowerMac, and there used to be my old Lombard. In addition there's a Belkin wireless basestation, and the new PB, my old Lombard my wife's Pismo can all connect wirelessly. Wireless connectivity is absolutely fine. The problem arises when I've got the new PB connected by ethernet. This morning was typical. At first everything works fine - I can pick up mail, browse, etc. After a while (during which time the machine was actually not being used) I went back to it and was unable to connect. No networking tasks of any kind are successful. Doing a bit of diagnostics, I opened a terminal window and ran the command 'ipconfig getifaddr en0'. This produced this result:- get if addr en0 failed, (os/kern) failure which is pretty clear - the OS kernal has decided to stop running some portion of the network stack. I can restore connectivity by a number of means - rebooting, obviously, but also just removing the cable replacing it. There's nothing else on the network with that IP address. The Airport Extreme port is turned off in the Location I use when I'm connected by ethernet. I'm running OS X 10.2.6. The cable hub are fine - I've tried different cables with the same result, the old cable works fine in other machines. The hub is fine. I'm beginning to think that there's an intermittent hardware problem with the ethernet socket on the PB. Mostly it's fine but occasionally it produces some weird transmissions which the OS can't understand so it switches it off. My dealer has been pretty unhelpful so far - said that they've never had a 12 PB returned, and maybe I should re-install the OS. I really don't want to do this. I'd like to bottom this out a bit more before I contact them again. Anyone got any ideas or experience about this? Any further diags I can do? Wireless Encryption
I just bought a SMC7004VWBR at CrapUSA for $30 and I am having trouble getting encryption to work. Can someone give me a step by step instrution on what to do? My router will do 64bit WEP or 128bit. My airport card does 40 or 128 (Pismo). I know I'm supposed to try putting a $ in somewhere before the password, but is this on the key generation in the router? or when I enter the key into my airport card? I generate a Key in the router (13 EC DD 7D 26 characters) then i try using this key to connect, but I put a $ in the front? That makes 27 characters IT DOESN'T FIT. Here are the instructions on the SMC site: http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action=support_tools_show_FAQnote_id=367 Entering the 128bit hex has only 26 characters 40bit hex has only 10 characters Thanks G-Books list, Ryan Stewart -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Hi, Tom! Thank you for your input. I'll check with this companies before making my decision. Best regards. Hugo Diaz [EMAIL PROTECTED] ==0 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Greetings.. I saw your posting about the Wallstreet repair. I had a similar issue with my Pismo (dropped it and cracked that board). At the time (not knowing this group), I found three companies on the web to do repairs: Powerbookguy.com (in SF, CA), wegenermedia.com (in SC), and the guys at pbparts.com (in AZ). After comparing prices and service, I sent my machine to Wegener, and they did the job for me, quite well. I also dropped the same machine a few months ago and cracked the LCD, which they also replaced for me. The LCD alone was $200 or 300 less than anyone else I could find... My thought is that you might check with them.. I think they charge a flat rate on powerbook repairs (I paid $50 per visit for all labor on my Pismo, which I thought was better than any car mechanic!). You're right--the savings on labor more than covered my shipping costs, and I was pleasantly surprised to get my own machine back within a couple of days on both occasions. Here in Dallas I couldn't seem to find a single company that was reliable or even knew what the issue was when I mentioned my Powerbook--so I'd DEFINITELY recommend sending it to someone who knows what they're doing. I took it to 2 different stores here and both said it would be a 'new logic board' ($699 $900), and when I pressed, neither store knew anything specifically about the powerbook--I think they were just going to find someone online to do it. Both stores said they'd need the machine for at least 2 weeks to get it repaired.. Hope that helps! Water based is fine too, but it's not as easy to find. I wouldn't get flux remover on the case, but it should be safe for the components. The main thing is don't use acid core (plumbing) flux. Methanol will dissolve rosin flux, not too well, but it works. It's also pretty safe for plastics. Acetone works well, but it attacks a lot of plastics. The epoxies used for IC and capacitor cases are safe with acetone, but be careful with your connector body and computer case. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Need recommendation for WS repair.
Water based is fine too, but it's not as easy to find. I guess you won't find it in a supermarket, but any electronics hobbist store... I wouldn't get flux remover on the case, but it should be safe for the components. The main thing is don't use acid core (plumbing) flux. The reason I said what I did is that the layers of the PCB, vias, and voids under components will absorb the flux remover and it will gradually outgass as the machine is used (=warmed). Typical composition of rosin flux remover: 57% 1,1,1 trichloroethane, 40% isopropanol, 3% acetone and this cocktail is evil for many plastics. The connector itself will usually be made of glass-filled polyphenylene sulfide which (AFAIK) will resist attack very well, but the case plastics, particularly thin pieces like the mouse-clicker actuator, are fair game. After having some nasty experiences with a product I was involved in manufacturing, I have sworn a solemn oath to keep chemicals of unknown properties away from my plastics ;) -- Lewin A.R.W. Re: OT..Sorry..Help w/ 10.2.6 Mail
This is a baffling post and I will assume its not a gratuitous flame. OSX is a little different--but if you want OS9 all you have to do is use OS9 in classic mode. I use classic mode ALL THE TIME. My secretary and I both prefer classic mode to OS9 because of its wonderful stability, and it is not that much slower (except on one or two exotic type things). I think it helps to have classic load automatically on startup and stay on all the time. Classic then allows you to use your old mail software or anything else in OS9. My daughter put OSX on my Lombard and it surprised me by working just fine. She has a 20gig drive and 320M Ram. Read the help file on how to start up without the password. I cannot imagine that anyone would not prefer Safari to MSExplorer. Explorer has an ebay thing that is nice--but ebay gives you the same thing on your ebay account. The scrapbook is nice--but not that nice. Go ahead and use Explorer if you like. -- -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: OT..Sorry..Help w/ 10.2.6 Mail
Alex, OS X is a great OS. Bear with it, you have to climb the learning curve which fortunately is neither steep nor long. It is so much better than 9, Windows or Linux! As for Safari, it is fast and generally works well. Sometimes it has troubles with certain sites, but every web browser does. So I keep Camino and IE around for those few that don't work with Safari. Safari and Camino are both much faster than IE. fsck (file systems check) is a traditional UNIX tool for checking the file system. I've never needed a third party utility for disk repair in OS X. If the system was shut down improperly it runs fsck on reboot to fix the file system. Let it work. As for requiring a password, you can enable automatic login in the Users panel in the System Preferences App. Paul At 1:22 PM -0400 8/1/03, Kochkodin wrote: What a P.O.S. this is!!! Ken wrote: From you description of the problem, I would guess that the soldered connection between the power socket and the Sound Card has come loose. If you aren't up to doing a bit of soldering, I have and extra Sound Card. If you want to do a swap out (one of the easier parts to get at in the Wallstreet), let me know. Ken I've got exactly the same problem with my WallStreet, though slightly worse in that the sound doesn't work properly now. I can live with the lack of sound, and I wouldn't mind so much that the battery doesn't charge, as the battery doesn't have much life in it anymore; but constantly losing its PRAM settings such as date and time every time it is unplugged is annoying. I have sourced the correct part from someone breaking a WallStreet, but am I correct in thinking one needs to take apart a lot of the PowerBook to gain access to this bit. The only take-apart instructions I can find are here... http://homepage.mac.com/sysop/PhotoAlbum3.html ... and step 18 is quite a long way down. The only thing that looks particularly difficult/fiddly to me is removing the LCD, but as I haven't yet done that... Perhaps someone who has done this can advise on the difficulty level or whether there are better take-apart instructions elsewhere. I have gone so far as to upgrade the SO-DIMM in the lower slot, which wasn't difficult. Regards, Mark -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
