Moving from 9 to X

2003-09-30 Thread Tony Coult
I'm currently running 9.2.2 on a Pismo and a CRT iMac. I'm thinking of
jumping up to X Panther when it comes out. Should I worry about being an
early adopter (aka mug or guineapig)? And will I be able to use the same
system on both machines? Thanks for your collective wisdom

You should be able to run Panther on both Macs. The supposed cutoff for
official Panther support are Macs with built-in USB ports. Your Macs
should be fine. But if the cutoff is true, then older Macs like the
Beige G3 PowerMacs and the Wallstreet PowerBooks will be among the Macs
no longer supported by Panther.

There is no need to wait. As we just saw last week ANY update can have
a problem. OS X is very good as is. I have been running X on my
wallstreet since the first week it was out--a true early adopter. It
takes about a week to break your old habits. My only question is why
now?

You will be able to use the same system on both machines, but, if I was you,
I would maybe wait a little bit before getting Panther right when it comes
out, unless having a little problem here and there doesn't bother you too
much. I'm currently running Panther on my Pismo and although the last
pre-release build is a lot better now, I still think it's not ready for
prime time. So, if Apple works on it a little more, it might be good when it
comes out. If they try to rush out, then expect some disagreements...

On a related note about 10.3 builds being ready, without knowing which

Lombard batteries

2003-09-30 Thread w miller
Now that I'm wireless, I have to address the battery problem. I have
three batteries for my Lombard 400, only one of which works. I even bought a

Is there anyway to bring them back to life? Or where do I get reasonably
priced Li-on batteries?
The whole wireless joy loses something when I have to plug in out in the

Just lift up the keyboard and take a look. If present, it will be staring
you in the face, just under the left half of the keyboard.

Or, more simply, fire up System Profiler and check under Network Overview
in the first tab.

Well, that would require a boot (couple of minutes) clicking open a

It takes just a few seconds to lift the keyboard.

Waiting for authentication services

2003-09-30 Thread Michel Treisman

When I try to start up, (TiBook G4, Mac OS X 10.2.6), my laptop seizes
up during startup at waiting for authentication services or else it
freezes waiting for activation services.

the first time I saw this I thought the permissions needed repair. But
I can't repair permissions because I have to boot up first on that
disk. And I can't complete startup. Catch 22.

Running fsck, DiskUtility, DiskWarrior make no difference. All this
happened two weeks ago. So in the end I reinstalled the software from
the CD.

Today it's happening again - waiting for authentication services when
I try to start up. Does any one know what is going on, and what to do
about it?

Since I reinstalled Mac OS X 10.2 last time this happened, I suppose
the problem must be some non-Apple application I installed. The extra
apps I have run recently are Cocktail and Windowshade. Can one of them
 cause this sort of problem?

I think the easiest thing to do would be answer the original question. No,
the 466MHz iBook SE with FireWire is not equipped with an AirPort card, just
the capacity to have one installed.

For that matter, NO iBook (clamshell or white) has an AirPort card installed
as standard equipment. It was an option that you would have had to order
(custom built or Built-To-Order), or an upgrade installed sometime after you
purchased the iBook.

I have the 900Mhz snow iBook.

I would say 1.5 hours is pretty good for upgrading that much. Without
looking up the specs, I'm sure your upgraded processor pulls more
wattage than the old one. Your battery was designed with the old
processor in mind. Even running it at slower cycles, your probably
still going to pull out more wattage than before.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that the PPC750FX chip that PowerLogix uses for
their Bluechip upgrades draws *less* power than the original PPC750--all
else being equal.

For the original poster:

Is it possible that some power saving options got changed or reset
during the upgrade? Resetting them and/or zapping the PRAM might help.
Also, is this your original battery? If so, it's probably nearing the
end of its usable life. Powerbook batteries usually degrade over time,
but I've heard of a few cases where they seemed to go south rather
abruptly--so it could just be a coincidence. If you know someone with a
known good battery, it might be worth trying it out. Finally, have you
contacted PowerLogix?

OT: 9.2.2 freeze

2003-09-30 Thread Roger Shufflebottom
This is slightly OT but I've seen it on my Powerbook so I'll ask:

I've just brought home a G4 Powermac (AGP Graphite 500 MHz) from my
office. It was running 9.2.2 flawlessly at work (but I didn't do any
printing). I installed OS X over the top of the 9.2 and it runs fine
in OS X. If I try to boot into 9.2.2, the mouse and keyboard don't
function. In fact if I unplug the mouse (either an Apple optical
mouse or Microsoft optical mouse, and plug them back in, there is no
light emitted at all. The only way to get mouse and KB to function is
to start with extensions off! I wish to run in OS 9 to use an old
Epson printer which I've connected to a Keyspan PCI serial card.

I've just erased the boot partition and done a clean install of 9.2.2
and it is still bad. It worked 2 weeks ago but since then I've
swapped the original DVD-RAM optical drive for a Superdrive and
swapped the original ATI video card for a Radeon 9000. Could these be
connected with this frustrating problem?

As I said, I saw a similar issue on my TiBook 800 when switching to
Classic to use an HP scanner that didn't have an OS X driver.

Any ideas folks?

TIA

Roger Shufflebottom

Go into Utilities and run Directory Access. Turn off all the services
you don't use for authentication. In most cases, you can turn off all
but AppleTalk (if you connect to AppleTalk devices) BSD and Rendezvous,
perhaps SMB if you're connecting to a windows system.

In authentication make sure only /netinfo/root shows and it's set to
automatic.

I'll bet it's trying to reach nonexistent authentication servers and
hanging until they time out.

If the wireless LAN you end up getting is 802.11b or 802.11g, then just go
ahead and plug an airport card in (airport standard, not the newer 'extreme'
version). That will equip your iBook to run on any 802.11b/g wireless
network.
In the more and more unlikely event it is an 802.11a system, you have a
little less luck. There may be a USB solution, but I don't know of one. Your
iBook (like all others) has no PC card slot, so there is no way of adding
any kind of card to it other than apple's own Airport card.

FWIW, I run an iBook that uses an airport card to connect to a Netgear
access point, then through a generic switch of some sort to a windows box,
where it is routed out to the net using the built in internet connection
sharing of Win XP. No 2 brands are alike, but it all works well.

If you have any influence on which wireless network you get, try to aim for
either the 802.11b or 802.11g systems. 'b' runs at 11Mbps, 'g' runs at
55Mbps. 'g' is backwards compatible with the 'b' that your iBook uses (with
help from the airport card)

Hope this helps,

Wiebe.
