Forgot to include that small piece of info...

My Pismo has a 20GB HDD right now. It's an over glorified type writer,
music player, and web browser. Occasionally I have used Photoshop.
I've started using a digital camera and the music is piling up. I need
the space. Part of me is telling me to go for the ext HDD since i can
get more space for the money. I dunno.

Go with the internal 80GB. Why keeping around a FireWire drive when you can
have 80GB in your laptop? If the drive you replace has a decent size, then
you could get a FireWire enclosure to keep it as a backup or for some extra
work. But you won't have to take it with you all the time.

2004-01-11 Thread Jason Long
The first question is what do you have now? If you've got the original 6 or
10 Gig HD then I'd definitely upgrade the internal to at least 40 Gig.
Exactly what you upgrade to depends on your budget and needs.

You should consider putting your old internal drive in an external case if
it's of decent size. If it's worth keeping. Personally I'd get rid of a
drive of less than 20 Gig as it's not worth the expense of an external case,
IMO.
I'm pretty sure that you can make folders on an external FW HD that only you
can access.

Hard Drive Advice for Pismo

2004-01-11 Thread markemmanuel
I'm sitting here at home debating whether or not I should I should
upgrade to a 80GB Hitachi Drive or buy an external firewire drive. My
past experience with ext drives are that they die pretty quickly. How
is the reliablity of these drives now? Also, how do these drive behave
in a multiuser environment, will my brother be able to see the contents
of my folder on the hard disk drive or can we have our own space? If I
build my own, is there a good bridge and power supply to buy?

Thanks in advance.

That just means it's a standard PCI card as far as interface goes and is
just small enough to fit into a laptop. But yeah, that does throw my idea
out the window.

On your Dell, make sure that the checkbox __Automatically detect settings__
is NOT checked. It always screws with network/internet use.

Find this in Control Panel:Internet Options:Connections:LAN Settings -or-
from inside internet explorer:tools:internet options:connections:LAN
Settings

If you are setting IP, and DNS properties - then you are already deep in the
TCP/IP properties - if the above doesn't help I would roll back to DHCP and
give it a try.

WEP is turned off on my ABS. I turned it off when I wanted my Newton eMate

The first thing I do with PCs is make sure the card is 802.11b and not
802.11a but that obviously isn't the problem here. But I mention it in case
others check the archive for similar problems.

With Win98SE and higher putting a PC on the network isn't too difficult
except for the fact that prior to Win2K and XP at least 1 restart was
necessary. The one problem I do see fairly often with Windows and WiFi is
security. To see if this is the problem you are experiencing, change your
ABS's config to turn off WEP and see if the PC can connect. If it can you'll
need to play around with the various security options to see if one can be
made compatible with the card. You should also make sure you have the most
up to date drivers/config software for your PCs card.

AFAICR there isn't an Apple driver compatible for the LS with any Mac OS
later than 9.1. Didn't you read the docs that came with the driver? I'm
sure it's in there as well as on google.

You might be able to use the printer under OS X if you have an Ethernet
interface in the printer and use open source software, but I don't recall
how common Ethernet was in that model.

I have a similar problem with a LaserWriter NTX that lacks Ethernet and
so won't work under OS X AFAIK. Any ideas where I can pick up an Ethernet
card this printer for close to nothing?

I guess I'll give it away otherwise.

programs, you can get a free spyware checkup?
To my knowlwdge no spyware exists for this platform. Look elsewhere for a
solution to your problem.

Gary, you might check the settings on your e mail sw, since some can
be set to attempt a connection when the schedule for checking for new
mail calls for it. In Eudora, look in the special/settings menu.
[I think a prior post made this point, HTH further]

Though I agree it is not likely the cause of your instant problem If
anyone knows of spyware that could afflict our macs, I hope they will
post. Is there not something platform independent that could be used
or perish the thought something that could somehow hook into IE or
Outlook and perform its mission?

If too OT, how an about an expert referral to some reading material.

Thanks,

Jim

Sharing OS9 printer with OSX powerbook

2004-01-11 Thread Rex Simonsen
I have a 3 mac network at home that consists of:

1)Mac 7600 desktop with USB Canon i860 printer attached using OS9
2) Pismo powerbook using OSX 10.3.2
3) iBook G4 using OSX 10.3.2
The whole thing is connected via Airport Base Station (snow model) and
sharing a cable modem connection.

I would like to be able to access the printer wirelessly from the
laptops. I understand that USB printer sharing does not work between
OS9 and OSX. Is there any way to do this?
Would a wireless printer server be an option? Or should I buy a new
Airport Extreme Base Station with the USB port?

Re: CD-RW

2004-01-11 Thread Krevnik
Hmm, does this iBook really have Firewire? If so, you can get a LaCie
Firewire CD-RW drive, and those currently burn at about 52x for a CD-R,
and 24x for an RW or faster. If you don't actually have Firewire, then
you are pretty much SOL.
