iMac memory install

2004-02-06 Thread Eric Morrison

I need to install additional memory in an original iMac. It's already
up to 384MB (added an additional 256MB when I first bought it) but I
want to take it all the way up to 512MB as I'm running OS X on it. I've
not replaced the upper (not sure that's what it's called) memory
stick and would love some guidance on what I need to take apart to do
so. I have the service manuals for other models (Pismo) which I've
followed to completely disassemble these machines... so it's not the
doing it that's the trouble... it's knowing what to do. If anyone has
some guidance on how to do this successfully I'd sure appreciate it!

Hi:

There has been a lot of info. lately about bad Kingston memory. Check

After running for about a week, I decided to re-install the top DIMM.
Since then, I've been experiencing random crashes where the screen

I have read in various places that 384MB is now the limit for Lombards
running Panther. It appears now that I'm going to have to buy a 128MB
DIMM and give my wife the 256 for her Lombard so she can run 512MB in
Jaguar (after all my fun with Panther, she has no desire to try XPF
and Panther). And then there is the video driver support...

Lombards appear to be the bastard child for Panther. Be careful!

Hi:

Speaking of Pismo screens, anyone know of a reasonable source for a new
replacement LCD for a Pismo? I have looked on eBay but would prefer to
buy from a reputable company on this one rather than someone on eBay. I
know that the following models will work in a Pismo and I also know
that I can get them for about $250 shipped, looking for something in
the $150 price range:

Chi-Mei N141X201
Phillips / LG LP141XA, LP141XB, LP141X5
Samsung LTN141XF, LT141X7
By the way, this screen info. is from

offered but we couldn't find a teacher...They are rarer than hen's teeth

Re: GPS Software (again)

2004-02-06 Thread Bruce Mitchell
I don't think it was anything you did. It comes through as a split link,
where the bit on the second line is not underlined so is not actually read
as part of the link when you click on it.

However, I found that cutting and pasting did not do the trick either. What
worked was to click the link, let it go to the 404 error in the browser,
then cut and paste adding the second line on the browser, click again...
only then did it work for me.

Thanks for the posting... great idea! I have sent it along to the Mac_X list
and every Mac user I know.

BTW, another reason is to have the GPS tracking software available on the
Mac. I had to get a PC laptop to have that capability.

Re: deleted data recovery: urgent help needed

2004-02-06 Thread Dan K

so as it happens, I've accidentally trashed the entire content of a
partition holding an ongoing project on my TiBook under X.3.2.

I've trashed it and emptied the trash by accident. One or two files
contained data I have no backup of since a about a week, meaning that a
lot of work is lost. I know I'm the culprit, I'm just trying to recover as
much as I can, if there's any chance.

I have done very little after that on the machine concerned, basically
only realising that norton file saver was not enabled, oh great. The
erased partition was a data only partition, no system on it, so I'm
positive I've not overwritten anything in there.

Any suggestion as how to recover the erased data?
Obviously you are aware of the need to avoid writing _anything_ to the
partition where were the files to be recovered, especially the need to
recover files to another volume. One thing you can do to protect the
lost-data volume from being written to accidentally is to write-protect
it using Drive Setup. Launch DS, select the drive containing the volume
and go menu-Volume SettingsŠ-List of Volumes then select the volume
from the list and check the Write protected box.

Data Rescue has a good reputation for file recovery, though I've never
been able to use much of what it recovered from HFS+ partitions (files
mostly mixed up/scrambled.) Disk Warrior can also recover files, hold
down the option key while at its main pane and the rebuild button turns
into a scavange button. I've not used DW for this since I learned of
this ability but I've seen several very positive reports. I'd avoid using
Norton unless all other approaches fail and you are desperate. In any
case, write-protecting the volume should keep Norton from making things
worse.

[OT] Monitor sudden death

2004-02-06 Thread Laurent Daudelin
A little off-topic but since I didn't know where to start, I thought I would
give it a try here.

I bought a used Apple Studio Display 21 about a year ago. It was working
fine although there has always been a slight problems with some areas on the
monitor that were slightly darker. Geometry adjustments could make the
problem less apparent but I was unable to make it go away completely.

Anyway, over the course of the last few weeks, I would have problems with
the monitor, like it would lose its image, or there would be a bad case for
degaussing, accompanied by some kind of strange noises, but I was always
able to bring it back.

Yesterday evening, all of a sudden, the picture shrank toward the middle of
the screen and was very fuzzy. I could barely see what was on the screen,
much less move the mouse pointer. I tried to switch the resolution by
guessing the location of the display menu in OS X.

At some point, the picture disappeared completely. I forced the computer to
restart but the picture never came back. I put back my Studio Display 17 and
all was fine. So, the problem is definitely with the Studio Display 21.

So, what are my options? Could I have it repaired for a reasonable fee? I
don't want to spend a lot of money on it because I'm afraid it could break
again. I've read that those problems where the monitor seems dead are the
easier to solve.

In the event I want to dispose of it, what can I do?

Thanks in advance!

-Laurent.

1. Don't write anything to that partition until you've given up.

Re: Buying Replacement Pismo Batteries: Experiences?

2004-02-06 Thread Eric Morrison
Folks:

I just bought a battery (6600mAh) for one of our Pismo's from
Otherworld. They have 5400mAh and 6600mAh replacement batteries for the
Pismo/Lombard which they list as 12.5 and 37.5% higher in capacity than
the original Apple battery (doing the math calculates the standard OEM
Apple battery at 4800mAh). These sell for $146 and $160 respectively.

Otherworld does list a 4500mAh battery but that is for the Wallstreet
and is listed as 25% higher in capacity than the original OEM Apple
battery (doing the math gives the original as 4000mAh).

I checked NewerTech.com and they list the same batteries with the same
stats... not sure where on their site Laurent got his 3750mAh figure
from.

We haven't had the 6600mAh long enough to see if it is worth the price
but I'll get back to the list once we've had a chance to try it. As far
as I'm concerned, if it really does pack 37.5% more power into the same
size package, it is well worth the additional cost (although no one
listed the price of the batteries from laptops-batteries.com and I
can't even find a Pismo compatible battery there (Apple's orginal part#
for Lombard and Pimo batteries are M7385G/A and M7318 respectively) so
if they are really cheap I guess they could possibly be a better
value).

For what it's worth, I too recently purchased a NewerTech 6600mAh
battery for my Pismo from Other World Computing. I haven't had it long
enough to check the actual working time on a charge, but the Battery
Status Indicator shows 4:06 at 99% capacity (it showed 4:57 at 100%

Re: Buying Replacement Pismo Batteries: Experiences?

My Mac guru advises that it is wise not to keep a PB plugged in all the time
but instead let the battery run down fully at least every few weeks, that
doing so will actually enhance the life span of the battery. He seems to be
correct, as with every PB I have owned I have had spare batteries for the
other bay which get little use and they always die long before the main
battery which I let wear down periodically.

read of the time sooner, I'll post with the current subject.

Does anybody know how to cure spinning wheel of death on Mail startup?

I used to be able to cure it by closing windows as fast as possible as
Mail opened, but it seems that this cure has been 'cured'.

Is there some way to start Mail without opening those messages which
might have been open when it was last closed?

Thanks,
Stuart.

You could try to remove Mail pref file from your preferences folder and see
what happens.

 Hi,

I just bought (not paid yet) for testing a used G3/400 Pismo which is known
to have a faulty battery (usetime max 30min) for about 250USD.

Anyways, even without battery connected, if PB is shaked a bit back and
forth, screen may go black and does not seem to recover no matter what,
system seems to stay up anyways though.. Any ideas where this glitch might
be, as this PB is such cheap that if i figure out the bad connection its
going to be worth the work.

If it still seems to stay up when the screen is going black, that could be a
punctured or torn video cable. Could maybe be the processor daughterboard.
Try to reseat it if you can. if not, then it might be the video cable but
without opening it, it will be hard to diagnose...
