Modem keeps redialing in Jaguar

2004-03-08 Thread chueewowee
Hi there,

With a new imac I find the modem keeps redialling after disconnection.
Even if I have switched all applications off. I have to put the computer to
sleep to stop it! I am on a dial up connection.

IN the network preferences I have selected 'automatically connct..' but
this shouldn't cause the problem.

Any suggestions ?

I ran OS X jaguar before, of problems of this kind.

regards, John

As a coincidence, in another list that I'm subscribed, someone
mentioned that his computer was having serious problems, and after
several trips to the shop (authorized Mac) he finally found by himself
that it was a bad modem . If you can, try using a different one and see
if it cures the symptoms.

Don't know if it has been mentioned already, but there is also a setting
maybe in the PPP section of network or in the modem settings where
applications that need Internet access can initiate the connection.

dead Tibook == dead backup battery?

2004-03-08 Thread Dan Bongert
I have a Tibook 400 that I broke the power socket on, so the pbook wasn't
getting power (battery wasn't charging, etc). I bought a new logic board on
Ebay (it's a 500MHz board, so I got a speed boost out of the deal as well).
The logic board swap was tricky, but seems to have worked ok--the main
batteries are charging now, but the machine is otherwise dead--no response
when I try to power it on.

It sat for several months with no power whatsoever (no AC, no battery). Is it
possible the PRAM backup battery has died? Is that something that would
produce the symptoms I'm seeing?

Thanks!

Pivot lcd and osx

2004-03-08 Thread Peter Johnsen
Hi

My employer just bought a Lcd screen (Samsung SyncMaster 173T) for my
12 PowerBook (1Ghz, 256, Panther).

It is a Pivot screen and its macintosh compatible (or so they say). But
the Pivot function does not seem to work.

A quick Google search gives me the impression that the pivot function
does not work for osx.

Are there anyone who knows anything about this problem?

You might try calling HP support again. I got a very helpful guy who

I've used my HP PSC 2510 networked all-in-one from my Wallstreet -
9.2.2 - and my PB G4 17 - 10.3.2 - and the 2500 driver is definitely
happier with OS X than OS 9.

Though it did work with OS 9, for both printing and scanning, I had a
vague feeling it made the machine less stable (hard to tell with my
flaky Wallstreet) and every time I shut down it would quit
unexpectedly as part of the shutdown process. Plus it would NEVER
print from MS Word 5.1, though it would from pretty much everything
else I tried it with.

It's a different driver than the 2400 one - at least the networking
part has to be - but sounds like there are similarities (after all, the
printers are, if I'm thinking of the right ones, the same except for
the networking ability).

Re: Wallstreet and Brother HL-1240 Printer

Hi Listers,

My USB issue has been solved.

My brother ( a SuSe Linux user ) pointed me in the direction of this
site with a log of discussions regarding a USB problem

The info on: http://www.macintouch.com/mos9usb.html was very useful.
When time permitted me to read it in detail I found out that I was
not alone in the problem I was trying to solve.

The extensions on:
http://eshop.macsales.com/tech/ftp/usb/usbextensions.sit were the
answer.

I created a folder on two floppies. One to hold the new extensions,
the other to copy the old ones into in case of a problem. When
this was done the old ones trashes from the computer not the
floppies. All I did then was to shutdown and then reboot. When I
checked the chooser and the ASP the printer was identified and
selected in the chooser. A small email was selected to print and
this was done with ease.

Hope this helps other listers with the same problem.

Hello Listers,

I have resolved the br_background running problem that prevented me
from loading any new software. So I have reinstall Apple 1.4.1 USB
card driver and the new Brother printer driver version 1.7.2. I
downloaded from the Brother site. Unfortunately I still have the
same problem APS sees the card bus card but not the location of the
printer. Chooser has the printer icon in the left box but when
clicked on, no connecting port appears in the left box.
Could this be and issue where the printer will only work with a
computer with a built in USB port.
Any feed back will be greatly appreciated.

I have a Wallstreet 233 MHz (II) that I am trying to link to a

I downloaded the Apple 1.4.1 card support application and loaded
plus the printer driver that came with the printer. No Mac software
driver came with the Belkin card as the Apple card support
application should take care of this. Other listers have had
success with this make of card so compatibility should be OK.
The card is seen by APS but with the printer switched on no printer

on nothing is seen on the right. I have looked on the Brother Web

so I downloaded this.

Dan,

I don't know if this will help or not, but I can send a report of
what GestLab has selected for my Pismo and for my Wallstreet.
Unfortunately, I don't have a Lombard (anyone wanna give me one? ;-),
so I can't compare Apples to ... er... yeah.

Would that be helpful to you? The Pismo and Wallstreet should have
significant differences. But I can't think of too many that would be
different between the Pismo and Lombard. bclk should be one (Pismo
@ 100MHz bus clock, Lombard @ 66MHz, right?), pclk might also be
one (though that might be the same for the 400MHz models). Other
than that, have you considered that mabye BR also probes the hardware?

Does anyone know for certain that the charging circuit/PMU are
identical in the Pismo and Lombard? It could be that the PMU uses a
different ASIC that doesn't understand the BR reset code -
essentially the battery power connector has a simple serial port
implementation that is probably pretty dependent on specific
hardware... I don't know about any of the G3s, but a 5300 has what
boils down to a Motorola 6502 (!!) as it's PMU controller.

Sorry that I can't help you with MacsBug - I know next to nothing
about the debugger.

Peace,
Drew

Pismo boot up problem

2004-03-08 Thread simon goslin
G'day,

Ocassionally my Pismo refuses to boot up, or do anything for that matter.

Any ideas on how to prevent this, or recify it?

I've tried ejecting the battery and restarting but to no avail.

Then after unplugging and replugging in all the leads it works, sometimes...

This has only happened 2 or 3 times but it's really annoying to say the
least.

I'm running 10.2.8 on a 400 mhz powerbook pismo g3.

Cheers,

Simon

Re: Battery Reset for Pismo

2004-03-08 Thread Ned1
I hate to ask what must be a stupid question, but with as much interest and desire as
there is on the subject of Battery Reset, isn't it odd that Apple hasn't written a
version for the Pismo? Might there be a reason? Has anyone asked Apple about an
update that will work on a Pismo?

Wallstreet II distorted screen

2004-03-08 Thread Clyde Kahrl
	I have a 13 Wallstreet II with a 500mhz powerlogix running
OS9.2.I think somebody may have knocked it and now the screen is
all jiggly and jagged running horizontal. The distortion is so bad
the screen is virtually unusable. The monitor runs fine though the
S-video port.

I took it apart reseated the ribbon cables in the body of the
computer (to no effect) and found the inverter card is in the screen
module. So if I take apart the screen, will I find I can fix the
ribbon cables or will I need new ribbon cables or a new inverter
board?

Re: HP printer doesn't print through Classic

Chooser.

I've used my HP PSC 2510 networked all-in-one from my Wallstreet -
9.2.2 - and my PB G4 17 - 10.3.2 - and the 2500 driver is
definitely happier with OS X than OS 9.

Though it did work with OS 9, for both printing and scanning, I had
a vague feeling it made the machine less stable (hard to tell with
my flaky Wallstreet) and every time I shut down it would quit
unexpectedly as part of the shutdown process. Plus it would NEVER
print from MS Word 5.1, though it would from pretty much everything
else I tried it with.

It's a different driver than the 2400 one - at least the networking
part has to be - but sounds like there are similarities (after all,
the printers are, if I'm thinking of the right ones, the same except
for the networking ability).

Thanks to all who have offered suggestions. I really appreciate them.

One unintentional misperception that I left people reading my
original post was that I was having trouble printing from 9.2.2. I
can print just fine from 9.2.2, and the HP supports 9.2 printing. I
just don't like to re-boot, especially since I partitioned this disk
without installing the OS 9 drivers on the OSX volume (doh!), and so
when I boot from 9, the OSX volume is unreadable and I cannot
choose it in the Startup Disk control panel since it doesn't mount at
all (stranded ... in 9.2.2!).

The only problem I'm having with that HP is that it will not print
from CLASSIC (when the machine is booted in OSX and I run an OS 9 ap
and try to print from it), something HP does NOT support. Booting
9.2.2 and running Classic in OSX are two different animals.

The workarounds I'm toying with are

1.) since I rediscovered how extraordinarily much faster stuff runs
when I boot from 9.2.2 (instead of OS 10.2.8) on this old Lombard (PB
333), I may migrate back ... but it will probably turn out to be
unbearably painful since I cannot mount the OSX volume, and will have
to perform some stupid transfers of large amounts of data (from the
25GB OSX partition) to an external volume I don't actually possess,
and then back to the re-initialized OSX partition in order to see it
from an OS 9 boot, OR

2.) buy a copy of Photoshop Elements off half.com (or somewhere) for
$60 or so -- less than 1/10 the price of Photoshop 7 -- to run on the
OSX partition, and leave Classic behind forever (it's the only thing
I use Classic for).

Option 2 sounds easiest and do-able-est, but I am SOO SICK of
bloody Safari's spinning rainbow at every click that I'm thinking of
getting a second mortgage to put myself into a G5. YAAG!

Thanks again!

-jra

Maybe the PRAM is starting to wear out? Have you noticed any change in the

brute force adj.: Describes a primitive programming style, one in which the
programmer relies on the computer's processing power instead of using his or
her own intelligence to simplify the problem, often ignoring problems of
scale and applying naive methods suited to small problems directly to large
ones. The term can also be used in reference to programming style:
brute-force programs are written in a heavyhanded, tedious way, full of
repetition and devoid of any elegance or useful abstraction (see also brute
force and ignorance).

Just a thought: you shouldn't have any problem seeing your OS X partition
from OS 9. If you do, then it means you probably initialized your partition
as an UFS instead of an HFS+. Your problems might be cause by this Unix
partition format as not all applications on OS X can work fine off that
partition...

Simon,
This problem occured on my PB Pismo twice in one week, which made me
think it was a software problem, but after trying everything I gave up
and took it to a Tech. Of course, he couldn't get it to do anything
wrong. . .but he replaced the PRAM battery thinking that might help. .
